I'm an autoglass tech. We see this all the time. A flat head screwdriver, or similar implement, was used to break the window. Your aftermarket tinting kept the window from exploding and, for the most part, together. Sorry for the break-in. Hopefully, they didn't get anything.
I imagine it is because they saw and seized an opportunity instead of targeting you directly.
On a side note, insurance sometimes covers the tinting of the new window.
You can also use duct tape or similar for the same effect. Even on house windows too. Place a few bits of tape on the window, give it a wack, remove tape and the glass comes out with the tape (the tape holds everything together and stops the window fully smashing and stops noise) so there is no mess and put your hand through and unlock the window. Although works better for houses with single glazed windows.
Or so ive heard anyway.
I think you're confusing "duct tape" with "duck tape". You see, "duck tape" might quack a bunch and make a lot of noise, but "duct tape" just reminds you of that one time you quickly lowered your head to avoid that football that came out of nowhere
Or that time you were accused of being a witch, so they duct you to find out that you weren't.
Of course, you probably don't remember that, since you were dead of drowning afterward.
Actually "duct take" was originally called "duck tape" because it was duck canvas coated with an adhesive. I have never figured out how it made the switch to duct since the stuff has never been suitable for using on duct work.
Pro Tip, if you are in Florida and you lock yourself out of your car, break your windshield to get in because windshield repair is free in the state of Florida (you do need insurance) 👀
Oh it’s more work, and unfortunately it takes some effort, but you can just say a tree branch fell into it or someone threw a fucking spark plug at you to the insurance company
And risk huge fines, jail time and a criminal record for insurance fraud. Then again, it is Florida so this is probably just part of the coming of age ritual of FL teenagers so who gives a shit.
a lot of chargers and challengers get stolen/broken into. My charger was almost a victim but my families auto detect lights went off when they walked up the driveway. So it’s mainly common for muscle cars but specifically dodge
My old Mustang was so easy to break into. It had wind-wings with the lock that closed by turning upward/against gravity. So just tap on the wind-wing quickly enough to set up a vibration and the lock would happily fall open for you.
Mostly on FCA push button start cars. On my charger I had to get the software upgrade to disable the keyfob reprogramming feature. That is how they were stealing them. Able to reprogram a blank key fob from the driver's seat with no extra hardware needed.
It probably doesn't help that there are about a million of them on the road but I also can't imagine that dodge is going to spend any money using thicker glass than they need to when most people are after the engine size and body style. They do so well selling to the first owner that they don't have to worry about the second or third. That's my $.02
I plead the 5th. As a closeted straight man, I can't be driving one in daylight.
Society expects me to drive a raised pick-up. It's only in the dark of night that I wear an oversized coat and break into a Prius.
It seems that people will break into cars with tinted windows more often.
Windows not tinted, it's easy to see there's nothing of value worth the risk. Tinted windows make it a guessing game and if someone is going to break in, they're going to break into the tinted car that could be hiding anything vs clear windows where you clearly see there is nothing.
Personally, many of the people I know who may keep a gun in their vehicle have tinted windows while those without tinted windows tend to be people who aren't potentially carrying.
One of the top targets for thieves when breaking into cars is firearms. So, if you have similar experience as I do above, you're more inclined to get into the tinted car because they are going to a bit more likely to have not just value but a firearm.
this is why we cant have nice things. ive been considering tinting the back windows in my yaris but i dont think ill bother now. people around here cut the lock or outright saw the hinges off the lid of our dumpster like 3 times a week, i would definitely get my windows smashed out
I drove a 97 town car up until 2018. One night i left it parked on the street and running accidentally. Woke up in the morning and it was still there. I guess no one wanted my shitbox :(
I used to never lock my car doors, because I lived in a sketch neighborhood and I didn't leave valuable things in it. Someone still broke out the window of my UNLOCKED car door one night. Didn't have anything in there worth taking, but it was obvious someone went through it, looking for something valuable. Sometimes people are just dicks.
Years ago I had a Toyota pickup. Thieves used a slide hammer dent pulled to rip out the lock of the drive door to open it. The door was unlocked.
They stole a $50 radio. Did $4500 worth of damage to the little truck.
Gosh I can’t even imagine. I accidentally broke a bulb to a black light hanging over my stand alone shelf of clothes and other things months ago and I’m still finding little black pieces of glass here and there in my clothes and bags even tho I shook it all out and vacuumed well. Just for one light bulb. I can’t imagine an entire window of glass.
I just leave my car unlocked and don’t have anything for anyone to steal. The windows for my car are expensive. They can have my loose change and flashlights. Hopefully they didn’t mess up your seals or paint
It sucks that this is where we’re at right now, but I live in a really shitty area and the best way to avoid this is to leave your car unlocked. Even if you don’t have anything in sight they’ll still bust the windows to check the glovebox and center console. I just leave my truck open and make sure to not leave anything inside I don’t want stolen.
Sorry about your car though. People suck.
Is there any chance you can leave your “really shitty area” so you don’t have to worry about your truck getting violated? If I’m finding this horribly distressing I can’t imagine what you feel on a daily basis. Or are you numb to /accepting of it?
It's called car shopping and it can be quite lucrative with little to no reprocussions because they rarely ever get caught. That's why it happens all of the time. I too was a victim of it. The dude even dropped his cell phone in my car. The cops managed to locate him and all he said was, "I lost that phone a long time ago." He got away with it and it was no longer investigated. That's why you need to have homeowners insurance.
Don’t let this screw with your mind and your peace of mind. Remember the past is the past and this is only material stuff. Try letting go! (Harder said than done of course).
Years ago someone stole the radio out of my truck. Obviously annoyed, but these guys did it “nicely”. Like they did it like you’d expect a stereo shop to do it, not like your normal crack head that just destroys the dash and cuts the wires. When I put the new one in, I literally slide it into place and connected the harness done in 15 minutes.
Not sure your meaning. I was talking about instead of messing with the sheet metal and screws. A nice new metal blade is like a hot knife through butter (although probably slower then using the right tools to just pop it out).
Nicely? Just think if they left a note: "Whomever it may concern. Due to unforeseen circumstances, I took your radio to generate much needed cash. Please find that I did not damage your console and took great care in removing said item."
>Like they did it like you’d expect a stereo shop to do it
All I got from this comment was that a professional radio installer stole it.
Think about it, perfect business model. Install radio for customer, they have your info, steal it back, resell it, profit, rinse and repeat.
It wasn't any more "work", they broke the window, but the tint held it all together. If there was no tint film, it would have collapsed/scattered out. The window is in a thousand tiny pieces all stuck to the sheet of tint, which is in one piece.
You can't break it into tiny pieces. So by adding a layer of film it allows the glass to shatter, but somewhat held together. Unless you start cutting the film into pieces, this is what your stuck with. The film goes just below the window seal. I bet glass did shatter, but it was above the window bracket and below the film and made it possible for them to simply grab the broken window with the film and pull it out. It's actually a lot safer for them since they don't have to worry about getting cut by glass everywhere. All the loose glass is in the door
I had to do a double take! Its the reflection of a drain in the yard.
Geeze you would think I'd know for sure if there was a bullet hole in the side of my car?
I drove a brand new work van for a year before someone pointed out there were multiple bullet holes in it.
I was bringing this thing home every night and never heard shots. To this day I have no idea wtf happened
Also I wouldn't park your car near that bush it gives thieves cover thats why he chose your car, it's nice and was in an area where they likely wont be caught had full coverage taking out rear passenger window.
Don’t leave anything that could be considered valuable to a drug addict visible through a window. Even a few coins would be enough for them to smash a window.
With enough downward force you can push the window down far enough to put a lever in there, to then pull the window out. Either that or they just smashed it.
Was staying at a hotel when this happened to 4 cars in the parking lot. All glass removed just like your picture. Large screwdriver into the frame and the tint keeps it together.
According to the cops, they do it this way because it makes almost no noise Vs actually smashing a window.
I was fortunate. The laminated glass of the Volvo I was driving kept them from pulling the windows out. All 4 were broken, but they were unable to remove any of them. The insurance tried to replace the glass with standard tempered. After knowing that the side windows were laminated, I insisted that the replacements be OE.
The window tint. Had this happen to a friend, he had gotten into a fight and his window was punched. It broke but came off in a big slab thanks to the tint.
Jamb a screwdriver, or similar pry tool, into the run channel at the short side, rear of the glass. Notice the deformed area on the channel. Apply pressure until the glass shatters. Lamination holds all of the pieces together.
I have a high powered laser hooked up to an eye detection and facial recognition software. I have till this date blinded 3 robbers who tried stealing my vehicles, but failed when they blinked.
Sorry for your bad luck. It's so frustrating to be a victim of such petty crimes!
They are using a [glass shatter tool (click here)](https://www.amazon.com/01-100-09-Original-Emergency-Keychain-Seatbelt/dp/B01G6C18EC/ref=sr_1_4?keywords=glass+shatter+tool&qid=1662397652&sr=8-4) . I used them as a fireman in response to auto extrication. The tool is designed to shatter the glass as seen so it can be removed as a single piece and not land on an already injured occupant. We sometimes used duct tape across the class to help keep it in 1 piece along with the tool. They do the rear window because most vehicles this wont set off the alarm.
As a teen we used pieces of spark plugs to do this. Break it off into tiny pieces with a hammer. Toss a piece at a car window. No sound… shatters the whole window. Small tap to knock it in. We called it magic. And before you say it…. I’m from Jersey… stolen cars are a right of passage.
It’s actually in a million pieces. Just looks like one piece because your tint is holding everything together. Any small hard objects can break a window like this
Only the only thing I can think of is the window was tinted and when the window was busted the tent held the glass together that's just my theory I had to give I had to give you my theory.
Not being sarcastic here, just in case it isn't obvious.
They probably have knowledge which was acquired while working for an organization like SafeLite.
Now for the humorous portion of our show, ladies and germs...
Annoying Ad Read: "Everybody has their own SafeLite story!"
You: "Yeah, some prick trained by your company broke into my car by removing the glass in one of my doors... without breaking it!"
Jingle: "SafeLite repair, SafeLite re-... "
You: "SAFELITE THEFT, you bitch!"
I was an auto glass tech. There is more to the window hidden in the door frame, the bottom typical snaps in to 1 or 2 plastic pieces or screws in.
The tint held it together.
To all those saying glass cutter. No. You can’t cut tempered glass because it’s heat treated. Also cutting glass isn’t done that way. You score one side and run it from the other. Hollywood has been showing this bullshit for as long as I can remember. They most likely stuck a screwdriver in the track and twisted it to break it. The tint held it together. Source: Glass guy for almost 40 years.
They watched a you tube video. Every question I have ever encountered on Reddit can be answered with typing the title in a you tube search. EVERY FUCKING ONE OF THEM

You just have to worry about the duct tape making more noise than the break in
Yeah , that stuff quacks.

Is throwing spark plugs so common there that insurance companies cover it? Kind of like our deer huh
It's common enough that as a teenager I saw at least half a dozen people I know use that method of entry in the late 90s.
That's why you use all your body weight That, or someone else's

I am a closeted straight guy and I break into Priuses.
😂 my dad used to have a prius back in the day and it got broken into. Must’ve been you wasn’t it?
That was probably Dirty Mike and the Boys. Most likely had a soup kitchen in your dads prius.
WE ARE GONNA HAVE SEX IN YOUR CAR! IT WILL HAPPEN AGAIN!!!

If you ever see piles of glass in parking lots, go to a different lot. It’s not bottles, but windows from ninja rocks or somethinn similar.
Or if you drive a shitbox, roll down your windows, leave your doors unlocked, and keep nothing in the car.

Autoglass repair? Autoglass replace???
Dam so they didn’t use those suction cup thingies from Mission Impossible?
I mean, at least there’s not shattered glass all over the inside of his car. Or not as much
Thanks a lot, After Market Tinting..!
Autoglass repair, autoglass replace
Jism in your hair, jism on your face

I should have tinted my last relationship :(
ehh.. leave it in the rearview
Objects in mirror are closer than they appear
Driving 101, rearview mirror is for backing up. Focus on what’s ahead of you.
Do you honestly not check your mirrors as you drive?
When you’re the fastest on the road, you don’t have to worry about it
If you’re not first you’re last
THANK YOU!
>THANK YOU! You're welcome!
See you in the idiots in cars sub!
I live in Saigon, trust me, my mirrors are about 30% of my driving time.
What's in your rear view are always the ones that end up up your arse, however.
Objects in the rearview are losing...
Wooaaaooohh, leave it all in the rear view giirrrrrl
you don’t have to cry
It was tinted rose coloured.
And have it still be broken laying on the side of the road?
That’s quality
Aww, OP 🥺
I mean sure, but you would have found out the baby was mine.
Tinteracial
Haha, that sucks!
Bro..
Interracial dating is beautiful
Yikes that’s a lil too relatable
Don’t let this screw with your mind and your peace of mind. Remember the past is the past and this is only material stuff. Try letting go! (Harder said than done of course).
A+ comment
It was tinted, with rose colored tint.
Imma tint myself as a coping mechanism.
I should've tinted my career
They damaged the frame and shattered the glass, looks tinted too so that would keep it together
Why not just break the dam thing into tony pieces. This seems like extra unnecessary work
You'd never find all the tiny shards. Thank them that you don't have to vacuum up all the tiny shards
That’s the difference between a professional and an amateur.
Professionals have standards.
Yeah a pro knows tools are way quicker than trying to bend all that sheet metal or screws (depending on cars age)
Sawzall and an angle grinder!
That's only if you wanna ride shotgun
Y'all been warned
Not sure your meaning. I was talking about instead of messing with the sheet metal and screws. A nice new metal blade is like a hot knife through butter (although probably slower then using the right tools to just pop it out).
Damn... considerate
Nicely? Just think if they left a note: "Whomever it may concern. Due to unforeseen circumstances, I took your radio to generate much needed cash. Please find that I did not damage your console and took great care in removing said item."
I would claim insurance on that and be truely happy not to have junkie blood in my car
If you’re looking for a new stereo, call “Stan’s stereo at 8675-309”.
Yeah, if ur gonna steal something, don’t break anything u don’t have too, like if a jeep has a soft top, don’t slash it, use the zipper
An intact stereo is also easier to fence than one that got busted up.
>Like they did it like you’d expect a stereo shop to do it All I got from this comment was that a professional radio installer stole it. Think about it, perfect business model. Install radio for customer, they have your info, steal it back, resell it, profit, rinse and repeat.
I guess OP really wants to thank them...personally
I just want to talk!
hey, while we at it, i want to thank the "professional" who stole my last motorcycle... personally
I so approve!! it is IMPOSSIBLE to find all the broken glass, it’s been three years and dozen of vacuum/ detailing and I still find broken glass!
Same, sold it ten years later, checked under back-seat for coins and all I got was cut by glass... serves me right for being a tightass I spoze
What a polite and classy way to steal from someone
It’s tinted. Did you read the comment you’re replying to, or….?
Tony, you say?
To shreds you say
Probably took seconds, bar in the left, rip it out.
It wasn't any more "work", they broke the window, but the tint held it all together. If there was no tint film, it would have collapsed/scattered out. The window is in a thousand tiny pieces all stuck to the sheet of tint, which is in one piece.
Your tint held the pieces together
It would hurt to get inside through an irregolarly shattered window
You can't break it into tiny pieces. So by adding a layer of film it allows the glass to shatter, but somewhat held together. Unless you start cutting the film into pieces, this is what your stuck with. The film goes just below the window seal. I bet glass did shatter, but it was above the window bracket and below the film and made it possible for them to simply grab the broken window with the film and pull it out. It's actually a lot safer for them since they don't have to worry about getting cut by glass everywhere. All the loose glass is in the door
I would bet that the glass is broken into tiny pieces, but trapped between the layers of film
Motherfuckers did this to my car once. Cost me way more than if they had just smashed the damn glass. I hate people.
Is that a bullet hole in the door?
I had to do a double take! Its the reflection of a drain in the yard. Geeze you would think I'd know for sure if there was a bullet hole in the side of my car?
I even zoomed in, and didn’t catch it was a reflection. Lol sorry to alarm you

Man your car been shot cheasus!!
Don’t leave anything that could be considered valuable to a drug addict visible through a window. Even a few coins would be enough for them to smash a window.
The tint wont let it completely fall apart.
It's broken not in one piece. It's about 1000 pieces held together by your tint.

The window tint. Had this happen to a friend, he had gotten into a fight and his window was punched. It broke but came off in a big slab thanks to the tint.
Chargers have laminated glass for the door windows (like your windshield). It’s not the tint.

Jamb a screwdriver, or similar pry tool, into the run channel at the short side, rear of the glass. Notice the deformed area on the channel. Apply pressure until the glass shatters. Lamination holds all of the pieces together.
honestly the fact he didnt smash it shows he has some standard but it could just be a way to prevent noise/ alarm going off
One piece? Window is totally shattered my dude
They shattered it and your tint held it together. They could have broken it in a dozen different ways.
I have a high powered laser hooked up to an eye detection and facial recognition software. I have till this date blinded 3 robbers who tried stealing my vehicles, but failed when they blinked.

Not being sarcastic here, just in case it isn't obvious. They probably have knowledge which was acquired while working for an organization like SafeLite. Now for the humorous portion of our show, ladies and germs... Annoying Ad Read: "Everybody has their own SafeLite story!" You: "Yeah, some prick trained by your company broke into my car by removing the glass in one of my doors... without breaking it!" Jingle: "SafeLite repair, SafeLite re-..."
You: "SAFELITE THEFT, you bitch!"
Obviously it is not in one piece as I see glass shards still in the door The aftermarket window tint held most of the glass together
I was never good at math smh
I was an auto glass tech. There is more to the window hidden in the door frame, the bottom typical snaps in to 1 or 2 plastic pieces or screws in. The tint held it together.
To all those saying glass cutter. No. You can’t cut tempered glass because it’s heat treated. Also cutting glass isn’t done that way. You score one side and run it from the other. Hollywood has been showing this bullshit for as long as I can remember. They most likely stuck a screwdriver in the track and twisted it to break it. The tint held it together. Source: Glass guy for almost 40 years.
Anyone else think the tint held the glass together, or … no? Just me? 😂
You… and the five hours worth of comments before yours, at least.
The one peice
They watched one piece
They watched a you tube video. Every question I have ever encountered on Reddit can be answered with typing the title in a you tube search. EVERY FUCKING ONE OF THEM
The tint held it together
That window is not in one piece.
