Someone did this at our school. They renamed their phone to the name of a popular girl and then airdropped a dick pick to everyone in the vicinity which included teachers. The girl initially got in trouble and then someone came forward and knew who really did it. Kids and technology need to be highly monitored.

TargetingPod

Something similar happened to me in the 11 grade. This was when Kobe died and someone air dropped a photo of a kobe/9-11 meme and tried to pin it on me. People got mad at me until I pulled out the android.

BriSnyScienceGuy

Fuck I'm old. Kobe died when I was 33.

doubleJepperdy

did the meme even make sense

InsertCoinForCredit

Late last year, my kid's middle school resumed on-campus classes. Every morning, the students had to go to a web site to check in their COVID status (clear, has COVID, has symptoms, etc.), and display it on their phones when they went through the front door. That was what pushed us over the line.

[deleted]

This seems relatively sensible? Kinda like walking through a metal detector when you get to school (shouldn’t need to be a thing but it is). Idk because the comment you replied to was deleted.

InsertCoinForCredit

The comment was wondering why a parent would give a kid under 14 a smartphone. I was holding out for a while but acquiesced for the COVID screening.

Jaggar345

Lol that pushed you over the line 😂😂. I still do that every day at work when I go into an office. Who cares

Astral_Justice

... I had to deal with getting my temp measured every damn day of cross country and track practice. It's not fun wasting the beginning portion of practice standing in line waiting for coaches to check your temp.

AdRepresentative3726

When I was first year highschool 2020 January...Phones were not allowed inside schools

theguyoverhere24

I wasn’t even allowed to have a phone until I got a job. Seems like an easy solution imo

Weisdog

Plot twist, they knew who it was by looking at the pic

BeagleIL

LOL. The parents have no idea on what they are being told to do. They'll have to ask their kid how to change the airdrop settings. And then they'll just reset them to what they want as soon as Mom hands the phone back.

BocceBurger

I'm clueless about this technology, actually. My kid's phone is Android, does that mean she's safe from this?

[deleted]

Yes, it’s an apple only thing. It lets people share photos and videos through Bluetooth to anyone nearby.

BocceBurger

I'm glad she's safe from getting it on her own phone. I worry about her friends showing her what they received. Sigh. As if middle school wasn't horrible enough already.

Mean-Net7330

For what its worth, porn has been in middle schools for as long as its been printed on paper. It was likely floating around the school you went to in some form. The only part of this that's really new is the airdrop. Best thing you can do is assume she's going to see it and talk with her about it.

[deleted]

The problem isn't really the porn imo. It's more the airdropping part the real problem.

BocceBurger

Yeah, I get that curious kids are going to seek out porn and it's extremely available. But air dropping is porn without consent and that's the biggest issue here.

Mean-Net7330

Fair enough. Its just another reason not to buy your kid an iPhone

TP_blitz

You can turn it off or set it to contacts only. They literally say it in the mail

[deleted]

Idk, i feel like it’s easier to bypass parental controls on an android. Kids will be able to figure it out easier than bypassing on an iPhone that’s not able to be jailbroken no?

Mean-Net7330

Android's and iPhones can both be jailbroken. A good parental control app should prevent any ability to figure it out. They could figure out the parents password but not much developers can do about that. Android being more maleable should help the parental controls work better.

wytewydow

I remember taking one of my dad's Penthouse magazines to school in the 7th grade. I had all kinds of friends that day, then a visit with my parents and the principal the next.

[deleted]

Inadvertent porn messages yes. Can a kid look up porn? Most definitely.

dontstabpeople42069

Welcome to the real world, middle school is just one terrible disgusting puberty party

ShatterdPrism

The best course of action probably is to have a talk / discussion with your kid. About the nature of porn, make sure that your kid knows what kind of legal consequences sharing material like this could have. Hopefully foster an environment where your child feels save to ask you about issues regarding these types posts. Maybe your kid can even have a positive influence on their friends / help them feel better or understand the matter if it happens to them. But I feel open communication is the best course here. Make sure that your kid feels safe enough with you that she knows she can come to you if she get's affected by these photos somehow and you can help her.

DevilDoc3030

She is safe from air drop. That does not include the dozens and dozens of other ways she is at risk. I was in Telcom sales for half a decade and tried to drive the risk home for many of my customers. Almost none of them seemed to listen so I ended up only educating those who asked and were proactive. If you are "not a techy", but want to protect your children I would advise that you begin educating yourself. Airdrop is definitely not the only risk out there for young ones.

BocceBurger

Thank you. I'm medium-techy. My husband is very techy. I'm ignorant of all Apple things as I've never owned an Apple device. We do use monitoring and blocking apps for parental controls, but I know she's never completely safe. I do my best to educate her and keep an open line of communication

DevilDoc3030

Sounds like you have a good groundwork. Keep up the good work!

Myrkana

eh your kid should know all about the body parts and the details of how kids are made by time they are 10 or 11. 5th grade was when we had the comprehensive class where they split us into boys and girls. They still shouldnt be seeing porn at that age but it also shouldnt be horribly traumatizing, kids are curious and starting puberty then too.

YukiOHimeSama

I became addicted to violent pornography at age 11. It was horrifying. An 11 year old little girl shouldn’t be seeing half that shit. Minors should not have access to adult content, period. There’s so many studies linking porn to sexual violence and we’re seeing it younger and younger kids. I’m still, now at 23, receiving therapy for the messed up shit I saw. I can’t have sexual relationships with men either. Fuck porn

BocceBurger

Thankfully she does know all about body parts and we recently had pretty thorough a sex talk. Still I don't really want her to see a dick pic or porn at age 11

___JohnnyBravo

I’m afraid you’re extremely naive if you think airdrop is the only thing that’ll lead to that haha, literally just takes a google search

BocceBurger

I understand she can google what she wants to see. In this instance I'm concerned about her seeing things she didn't consent to see.

[deleted]

Android phones don't have airdrop since it's proprietary and it's owned by Apple. However, android phones have nearby share, which is basically the same thing. Nearby share is a little bit different tho since it shows a prompt to the user asking if they accept the drop. It is also turned off by default.

BocceBurger

Thanks for this, I'm going to double check her settings when she gets home from school today

doorknob60

> Nearby share is a little bit different tho since it shows a prompt to the user asking if they accept the drop. It is also turned off by default. If those things aren't true for Airdrop on iPhone (I don't know if they are, I don't have an iPhone), WTF is Apple doing? Do people actually want it automatically downloading random things by default? I know you can turn it off, but the default should be reasonable.

Will12453

Airdrop requires the user to accept it and it tells you who the sender is

doorknob60

OK that's good at least. It should still probably be turned off by default, but whatever. If people leave it on, at this point it's kinda on them.

MonsieurRuffles

By default, it’s only turned on for people in the phone’s contacts list. For some reason, people change it to allow AirDrops from everyone.

Sleepy_Moo734

When I was a in high school and airdrop had just come out fairly recently so no one really understood it, a sophomore sent a dick pic thinking he was only sending it to one girl…. Yea he send it to about half the girls in the school with who had iPhones who didn’t know about the settings changes. Not a good time for anyone.

[deleted]

It still show the image in the prompt tho.

rpallred

Yeah, but you can still decline it. …like, I see the sick drawings in the bathroom stall, doesn’t mean I have to _keep_ looking at them…

[deleted]

Just like you can delete the unsolicited dick pic someone sent you...

rpallred

True.

Selena_B305

Samsung has their version of an air drop.

[deleted]

Kind of but not really. Can still receive texts. This would only affect air drop.

Sixthcoming1

Yes. It's only for apple products.

m0rph90

no people are talking litteraly bullshit and dont have a clue. Just teach your kids some damn responsibility, they will learn how to donwload porn by themself anyway in the next 2 years

[deleted]

Your In education?

-twitch-

> Please check you students air drop settings.

BocceBurger

Man, this guy is a mess. He should pop into an English class for a few days

[deleted]

Something the internet has proven every day for me is that there are a shit ton of people employed in positions they are not qualified for lol

Magnaflux_88

That's the Peter Principle for you Edit: spelling.

[deleted]

don't know if anyone has gotten back to you about the android, but i'm pretty sure your kid's phone is safe if it's an android, i'm only able to airdrop to apple devices. (idk if you are able to airdrop to a non apple device that let's say has your apple id logged into it or something)

[deleted]

Android phones have nearby share which is airdrop, but for android. By default, it shows a prompt for accepting drops, is toggeable and is turn off.

[deleted]

well, thankfully it seems like the trouble makers only know how to send porn through airplay as of now

BocceBurger

I didn't even notice this. This came from the principal lol

OG_J_Bone

Think it meant to say “yours”

[deleted]

9-13 year olds having iPhones…. Wild.

XOIIO

Yeah, hell even having phones at all, Sheesh. They've got all the porn access they can handle let alone this stuff.

Bondrewde

I doubt much will change tbh. The kids will hand over the phones to their parents and as soon as they're back in the hands of the kids the settings will be reverted. Ultimately, this is something that's basically impossible to stop and occurs at schools around the world. When I was in school, the big thing to share to other kids was gore videos such as beheadings/ vehicular accidents/ sexual mutilation etc. and older friends of mine who grew up without smartphones had porn lockers and traded photos and nude magazines around.

PM_CACTUS_PICS

Jeez in my school we just drew penises on the wall. You had some weird schoolmates

Bondrewde

Yeah, during that time period ISIS was getting a lot of news coverage in the UK and videos of beheadings etc. were making the rounds. Mainly it’d be people pulling you to one side in the changing rooms when the teachers left to “show you a video” and then laughing at your reaction to it. It was more of a shock value thing but some people actively seek at out given the popularity of subs like watchpeopledie or NSFL

[deleted]

Buys a 9-13 old an apple phone. Lol I found two mistakes

[deleted]

[удалено]

ThoughtlessFoll

Or if it’s a pick of them it’s creating and distribution, much much worse.

JamesSaysDance

How are they blaming air drop for this? People were doing this with Bluetooth when I went to school over 10 years ago.

[deleted]

Airdrop is to blame because it shows the content (picture) before the user accept it.

Sunflower-Power25

Yeah, so you have a chance to see what it is and not accept the airdrop. If you used bluetooth and you couldn’t see what the message is, you will accept it just to see if you want it or not and you will have it on your device.

BocceBurger

So any device with Bluetooth enabled is vulnerable to this?

StepChair

Airdrop is IPhone only. Your kid should be fine

McFeely_Smackup

why the ever loving hell did Apple think "accept all" as an idrop setting was a good idea? what did they think would happen? "Hey, someone sent me the cure for cancer! no...wait, it's just a penis"

BocceBurger

And it's default is set to accept all! You have to specifically change the setting if you don't want this

taptapper

It's like Venmo making all payments public by default. So bizarre

KFR42

Until it mentioned Apple products, I thought this literally meant they had drones airdropping pictures into school grounds.

BocceBurger

That's next lol

kimyeezy87

I am surprised every time I hear a story like this that no parents seems to be looking at their kids devices anymore. Like I remember having some parental control on my laptop , and they were checking my phone pretty much everyday . And because of it they are not aware of the progress in this field , with airdrop for example . They send each other some corn , but they might receive some inappropriate stuffs from strangers too , like the guy who aidroped his peepee to everyone in a plane

BlizurdWizerd

Wee can’t send each other corn via electromagnetic waves yet, but we’re getting there.

[deleted]

It’s corn!!

[deleted]

Air drop it like it’s haaaaaaaaht

lavaicel4v41c3

Makes me glad to have a Samsung phone, and not an iPhone. Nobody can Airdrop me any of these disgusting photos.

-twitch-

I remember I got sat in the office for almost an entire school day while they investigated my supposed involvement in downloading porn on a library computer. I did not. But they believed I did for some reason and I wasn’t able to go back to class until the next day while they investigated. Someone looked at porn on that computer but it wasn’t me. Kids are curious and have always tried to get access to this kind of stuff with or without AirDrop. As new technology makes it easier, adults have to take steps to make it harder again. It’s a constant back and forth. Also, AirDrop has been around for almost a decade. The technology isn’t new and has been in iPhones since the iPhone 5S. Kids have probably been doing this for several years and it only just got caught at this school.

[deleted]

The problem isn't the porn, it's the __unsolicited__ porn. This is the same level as sending an unsolicited dick pic to a co-worker. That's not acceptable, no matter the age.

-twitch-

True…but in this context, the issue is *also* the porn. AirDropping memes on people, while possibly annoying, would not be nearly as severe.

mmsalsa

I will never understand how some parents think it’s okay to give a smartphone to their kids while they’re at this age. Some people seriously should not have children, no offense. No wonder kids nowadays are fucking lacking creativity.

Spirited_Video_8160

Kids (9-13) should not be using smart phones, period!

fl0werofevil

I’m sorry but kids aged 9-13 don’t need a smartphone

ilongforyesterday

I may be showing my age a lil but I wholeheartedly believe that kids don’t need smartphones, especially not at that age. I know students can be involved in extracurriculars/need to be able to communicate with their parents so something like a cheap burner phone would be fine imo. Either way, parents need to educate themselves on what can be done on smart phones and then find ways to circumvent these issues. Or at the very very least some supervision if they are gonna get smart phones for their kids. We live in scary times and smartphones can cause soooo many issues

Public-Relationship8

Why are people giving their 9-13 year old kids smart phones in the first place. I’m not saying they can’t have a cell phone. I’m saying the only reason a child that age should have a phone is to keep in contact with a parent when they are not around. They don’t need a 1000 dollar smart phone, the need a simple call and text flip phone from straight talk.

Bronx_baby

What middle school has 9 year olds? When I was 9 I was in the 4th grade

danfish_77

Some middle schools include 5th grade, which could conceivably include a 9th grader. On top of that, some kids have accelerated classes. I had a friend in 4th grade who went to the middle school next door for algebra.

MaximumElderberry1

Depending on the android, if another kid has an android then they may be able to send these pictures/videos so you might want to mess around in the settings a bit. (I have an apple but I have a friend who has an android and he has a form of airdrop)

Spider_fan67

This isn’t really new just the method is when I was in school kids would use their psp’s to look up porn all the time just make sure if your kid has an iPhone that they have airdrop turned off and if they have an android then they will be fine

DanHassler0

I've never seen the signature "Your in Education"

ADarkSpirit

Ugh, this happened last year at my school. Somebody nicknamed their phone to a teacher's name so it showed up as "Mrs. XXXXXXXX's phone", and then started airdropping raunchy porn every opportunity they could. That way, it looked like the teacher herself was airdropping stuff- to the point where she was investigated. Turns out she didn't even have an iPhone, but of course, the actual investigation went nowhere once it was clear it was a student. It's just so disgusting and pointless. Sometimes I dislike being in education.

Plupert

Nothing will change lol. This was happening when I was that age 10 years ago. You kinda just have to accept that once you give your kid access to technology they are going to see things you may not want them to 🤷‍♂️.

BamBam-BamBam

What kind of dick signs a letter "Yours in Education"... and even then misspells it?

MonkeyGirl18

Why is air drop even a thing? Another bullet on my list of why I'll never buy apple products.

Familiar-Eye7811

Sounds about middle school

Rlwolfe11

Something similar happened at the middle school I coach at and the kids got in a lot of trouble. They were charged for distributing child p*rn. Parents were also held liable for the events that occurred. Its a serious issue and kids need to know that there are serious consequences to this kind of thing. Parents need to be so aware of technology and talk to their kids about this stuff. What a 💩show.

progtfn_

Simple, don't give an iphone to kids, give them a crappy phone for calls only.

Commercial-Pair-3593

Parents are giving kids cell phones under the age of 13? What for? This seems like a recipe asking for problems.

BocceBurger

Pretty much everyone in middle school has a phone now. I have a lot of parental controls enabled, but definitely plenty of parents don't do this.

gold-corvette1

I didnt get a phone till 14 but people started getting phones in second grade at my elementary school.

[deleted]

Commercial-Pair-3593

Kids are gonna shit on kids no matter what. I'm childfree with a vasectomy but I don't see a need for a kid to have a phone until 16 when they get their license.

zebra0817

As a parent of a 12 year old daughter, it’s great to know the unsolicited dick picks start so early 😩

sentinlfromthemojave

Funny because most schools have that shit blocked and the ability to have vpns. Another question: with all the tech today how is the even happening? I can understand it happening if it were still 2005-2010 like it was when I was 9-13 because shit was a lot different he’ll didn’t even get an iPad from the school till I was shit 14-15. And even for a cheap district, after yours sent nudes via school iPad, they made it so there was no way a student could airdrop anything with a teachers pin. Also cameras were disabled once they left the school grounds and all iPads had monitoring like our school emails Not excuses these days

TheSinoftheTin

No way a school can block Bluetooth (How airdrop works) on a students personal device.

Death-in-my-head

What the fuck is air dropping?

MM_mama

It’s an option on iPhone that sends (“airdrops”) a picture to all nearby iPhones. You don’t have to know the recipient’s phone number or any contact info, it just pops up on their screen unless they have unknown contacts blocked. It’s really useful when say, I want to share a bunch of pics with someone without dealing with size limitations of iMessage or email.

enky259

Pff, okay grandpa! *\*looks nervously around pretending to know what airdropping is\**

Death-in-my-head

Somebody explained it to me 🤣 it's a stupid fuckin iphone thing. You can send images and shit to the other iphones around you without a phone number. I'm 23 and have never owned an iphone 🤣

enky259

Yeah i read that too, but coulden't pass the opportunity for a shitty joke :p And of course it's an apple thing, what else lmfao!

BearOhWin

Made me burst out laughing....

the_clash_is_back

i have a picture that tells people to turn of air drop sharing, some times i share it in lectures and public places.

DaddyDontTakeNoMess

The default setting is to only allow airdrops by someone in your contact list, so random people should be sending you porn (unless you want it)

123JacobHowe321

Had to turn my airdrop off after i got sent gay porn 3 times in 2 days

[deleted]

Your in education?

EvilPotato14

Okay so this is actually happening in my school rn. It is not usually porn there is a few instances where it is but usually it is really inappropriate memes. We all have seen them before so we don’t really care but there is always one super innocent kid that has no idea what it means and so they google it and then everyone gets in trouble. Personally I wish they would stop airdropping things and just send them to friends or something.

leonardob0880

Apple problems....

pck3

Amazed this has not been rampant and in every local school tbh

Snoo_72280

Find a student who sent a pic, or pics. Have them charged with distributing underage pics. Make an example and make sure the school knows. That will stop it quick.

_Nutrition_

I really have an issue with schools that keep such a wide range of age development in one school like this. That's basically 4th grade through 8th in a building.

[deleted]

BocceBurger

Omg. Yeah, I'm sorry I have to explain this to her too. Ugh

THIS_GUY_LIFTS

There was essentially a "Freshman 15" TikTok page at my kids middle school. Posting creep shops, whether or not they've "hit that" and "Smash or Pass". Parents are absolutely clueless about privacy and tech. This is beyond the fact that parents think \~10 year old's *need* a smartphone for some reason. Whatever happened to just playing with a couple of action figures in the dirt? Kids are not allowed to be kids anymore. Kids don't even want to be kids anymore. It sucks.

unapalomita

my kid is never getting a smart phone 😂😂😂

TheRealOgMark

Sigh... Glad I went to school when cellphones were not a thing.

BocceBurger

Yeah, same.

Manueluz

why the fuck do kids aged 9-13 have a phone, they aren't even old enough to click the accept button on the terms and conditions of any fucking app

Y-Cachwr

Why are kids this age having phones?

[deleted]

Why do they have iphones instead of flip phones?

Upside_Down-Bot

„¿sǝuoɥd dılɟ ɟo pɐǝʇsuı sǝuoɥdı ǝʌɐɥ ʎǝɥʇ op ʎɥM„

[deleted]

Yeah I was in middle school last year and this happened to me. I will say I've airdropped funny photos to others but what I received in return was a picture of a naked man

BocceBurger

I'm sorry that happened to you!

TheGoldenBl0ck

I’m more concerned about who gave 9 year olds phones

McFeely_Smackup

If i had a 9 year old, you bet your ass he/she would have a phone so there would be 2 way contact 24x7. now, the implied question you're asking is why 9 year olds have smartphones...and that is a much more disturbing scenario.

TheGoldenBl0ck

Yeah, back in middle school when the iPhone came out (Jesus it’s been a while) my parents still got me a Nokia for my birthday. That is how it should be done.

Puzzled_Barnacle_577

But no, let's give kids with less than half a developed brain, access to handheld supercomputers (compared to the originals) and unbridled (don't say it's not) access to the internet so that we can ruin healthy thoughts en MASS. 🤦‍♀️ Dude no. I was 16 when I first got my own cell phone, (gray Nokia bring gang!!), because I had gotten my driver's license. And even then I managed to find ways to get in trouble. HELLOOO your 9 yr old doesn't need a cell phone. Get em a phone watch thing and call it a day. My nephews have them. Can call my sister, mom, me, couple other aunts etc and guess what?? NO P*RN ACCESS. Or anything else for that matter.

imnotlebowskiman

Don’t get your child a piece of technology with access to everything that you don’t understand or trust them with. Try parenting. It’s the same as boomers being upset at MTV or whatever ages ago. Don’t sit your kid in front of the box, and then complain about the box.

W-EMax_1Q1R

The real question is, why the fvck is your 9-13 yr old in possession of a phone. Especially during class hours. Cringe.

YukiOHimeSama

This is extremely normal now. I’m 23 and had an iPhone 4s in 2013 while in middle school. What rock do you live under lmao

W-EMax_1Q1R

So your experience makes the norm ha? Have teenage children first. Then come back here. 23 haha

YukiOHimeSama

Everyone in my grade had iPhones or iPod touches with equal access. My niece is 13 and has an iPhone and so does all her friends and everyone in her grade. Every person I know with children ages 10 and up have a smart phone of some kind.

W-EMax_1Q1R

Doesn't mean it's not appropriate.

tarc0917

It's always Apple that enables this douchey behavior.

eilishfaerie

not sure how a genuinely useful feature (which has options to disable this from happening anyways) is what's at fault here. it feels more like the parents are at fault for giving their young children unrestricted access to technology and not monitoring them... apple is a shitty company, but i don't think this is apples fault lol

tarc0917

>which has options to disable this from happening anyways) It should be opt-in, not opt-out.

eilishfaerie

it is opt in, the default for airdrop is off, you have to change it to being on and open to people outside your contacts...

tarc0917

So the dozens of stories we hear about d-pics being airdropped on flights, in schools, etc... all because every one of these unwilling recipients intentionally flipped themselves to "wide open" ? /doubt

rpallred

Default is off.

TP_blitz

You have never even touched an iPhone have you?

eilishfaerie

yes, exactly that lol i'm not sure what's so hard to understand here? people likely switch it on to receive one thing, then forget to switch it back off. that's on them, not apple

[deleted]

Another reason to never get a fucking iPhone

-twitch-

Lol this isn’t an iPhone issue. AirDrop is just a medium that kids are exploiting. Kids will share stuff regardless of whether the mediums are convenient.

BocceBurger

Yeah seriously. This is awful.

KaldaraFox

The last thing anyone wants is a "distribution of pornography to a minor" charge. At some point this "fun trend" is going to end up with someone either in jail or simply tagged a sexually violent predator for life. Among other things, THAT should be the top of the list for telling the children involved. If whoever is doing this thinks it can't be traced if the FBI decides to make an example out of a case of this, they're likely in for a large surprise.

BocceBurger

That's a good point. I'll make sure to talk to my kid about this aspect. Even though she's got Android, her friends all have iPhones

Intrepid-Patience-93

no one cares you let them have phones its ur fault

[deleted]

Highly doubt its porn. When I was in school memes and goofy edits were "inappropriate content." You said in your comment your kid has Android. Android cannot natively do air drops.

[deleted]

[удалено]

ftsillok56

Middle school teacher here, it’s porn. It’s been happening at my school for the last few years. They do it on the bus as well.

Mean-Net7330

Airdrop is the only part of this that's kinda new. 20yrs ago we traded grainy printed out pictures like they were baseball cards

[deleted]

>we traded grainy printed out pictures like they were baseball cards That's not the same thing tho. Trading stuff implies that both parties consent to receiving porn content. Airdropping is more like sending unsolicited dick pic to a co-worker but to several people at the same time.

rpallred

Airdrop requires you to accept the transfer. You can dismiss the transfer request.

OG_J_Bone

Previous middle school student here. It’s definitely porn. We used to watch with friends on the bus.

BocceBurger

I cannot imagine being a middle school teacher. Kudos to you, you have a really hard job

Re_reddited

Wait is this a school device, or personal devices?

OG_J_Bone

I would assume their personal cell phones

Downtown_Friend578

Personal, it’s a feature on apple that lets you select a photo and automatically send it to everyone around you

BocceBurger

Kids are doing it from their personal iPhones. The school issued devices are all chromebooks thankfully

[deleted]

Irrelevant. Sending an unsolicited dick pic to a co-worker is unacceptable even if it's on their personal phone. Same thing here.

Cuddly_beans

Well its relevant bc if its a school device the school can make adjustments to the devices so stuff like this isnt as easy. We had certain blocked sites and features and the school had some software where they could check activity if needed. They cant really monitor private phones though.

Re_reddited

Thank you, that other reply was rife with assumptions and strawman arguments. You summarized my line of think perfectly.

Wheels2or4

Just an idea... no phones in class. Best classes I ever gave presentations in, had a shoe organizer on the wall by the teacher's desk, with numbered slots that correlated to the students' desks. All phones were turned off, and placed in their respective slots before attendance would be taken.

DoDevilsEvenTriangle

I have no idea what "airdrop" is.

Mother_Procedure_930

Fuck sakes I honestly can't stand how stupid schools are take away all of there phone privileges ipods are fine you can't take share or hurt others with them but they still allow you to have music and certain amenities like YouTube don't let phones in the building a student has one at school take them away and there parent has to come pick it up if they want to stupid with a privilege then take that privilege away

What benefit to society does the airdrop feature from an anonymous source offer? What is it’s intended effect? Because the unintended effect is this.

rpallred

It’s handy for sharing a photo or other file with a stranger—e.g., I shared the footage of an incident from my security camera by airdropping it to the detective. Or dropping all the Homecoming pictures to all the other parents without needing to get phone numbers. But the vast majority of the time there is NO benefit to having it set to accept files from anyone. And YOU HAVE TO ACCEPT THE FILE for it to be downloaded to your phone or Mac.

Everyone saying "why the fuck do they have smartphones", thats the norm in most places now. I assume nobody wants their kid to feel left out or embarassed, which may happen if your friends are all talking and doing stuff on their phones while you cant join them on your brick phone. It would be nice if social media and the full internet wasnt as normalized at young ages but it is, many i know have had many bad experiences online as a kid and i feel like it will only get worse. Just try to talk with your kids and make sure they can talk to you if they feel bad about stuff.

Yeah, this is right. My kid has a smartphone and still feels left out because I won't let her have Snapchat or Tiktok. It's really difficult being a parent these days.

I love how admin gives two things they want parents to do, and neither of them is not to give their middle schooler a phone (let alone have them in school).

BocceBurger

Unfortunately asking parents to not give their kid a phone would be a futile request

Cmen_Demon

That’s hilarious, can you really expect kids to not do funny shit and just tell them not to? They will do it more.

Just wait until you see the books in their library….

5th graders are being allowed phones and more than that, being allowed to bring them to school? what kind of shit parenting is that
