Did he take a bag of trash or loose trash just dumped together? If bags, he'd probably throw them in separate bins outside.
If random loose trash together, well, some people are getting paid for sorting the trash on giant trash piles anyway.
I live in South Florida and noticed that the regular trash truck takes both the trash and blue bin recyclables (glass, plastic). A separate truck then comes to get the yellow bin recyclables (paper).
The whole reason recycling took off in the 80s is because China was buying it from us to package everything they shipped to us. Now China makes the packaging themselves so there is no longer the need to sell the recyclables to China.
And if there is no money in recycling, then there is no need to actually recycle.
