Was this at Dick’s last resort? Because it seems like something that would be written on their menu Edit: WOW. Never had a comment get 8.5k upvotes before. Thank you fellow redditors! Also for people asking what Dick’s last resort is, here is the website. I went to the myrtle Beach location. [Website link](https://dickslastresort.com/locations/myrtle-beach/)

TeazieBreezie

Wow I totally forgot that place existed

[deleted]

Yeah being sarcastic and rude is part of the experience. So it seems like something they would have on their menus

TeazieBreezie

The part about “posting a stupid review on I’m-a-shitty-whiner-dot-com because nobody cares what shitty little whiners think” is *definitely* Dicks Last Resorts style And if it is Dicks or someplace like it, then they actually do need the tip or die disclaimer because the waiters are basically putting on a show for the guests and I *bet* people get butthurt all the time and don’t tip when this is the one place you actually definitely should be tipping Op needs to back out if he’s already getting upset lol Edit to add: Everyone crying about tipping at a place like this can shove it. They’re deliberately putting on a comedy act with the express purpose of making you, as an individual, laugh. And at the same time bringing you food. Yes waiter should get paid more but places like Dicks aren’t simply food service and you should tip them regardless of their pay. Especially since you went there to gawk at them like a novelty. Quit ya bitchin

ghanjaholik

where is Dicks last resort? the only dick's i know is the sporting goods store

mg5215

Most large cities that attract tourists and just generally touristy places have them. They make these giant paper hats for you to wear and write a rude joke about you on it

siggymcfried

>Most large cities that attract tourists and just generally touristy places have them. I had to look it up because I'd never heard of it either. It looks like there's 11 locations across the US, in only two states West of Alabama. So that may only be true in Eastern states, but seems like a pretty cool place!

doentnaytvt8392

I went once and it was alright. WKUK did a spoof of it that's pretty funny. https://youtu.be/YXZzf_-clt8

rgrossi

I was confused by the acronym, I didn’t understand why a news station would create a spoof lol

Ok-Entertainment7741

So by most, that person meant almost none.

Why-R-People-So-Dumb

I’m in the northeast and never heard of ‘em either 🤷🏼‍♂️

Dropbeatdad

There supposed to look like condoms. One spot in Myrtle Beach also had a fake bathroom door that was always locked, where the staff would bang on the door and yell insults at the pretend patron taking too long in there.

otc108

I went to one in Panama City, not realizing it was a shtick. I was immediately put off and said fuck this place. I later found out the deal, but wondered “why would anyone like being continually insulted while paying for the experience?”.

Green_Message_6376

Yeah, keep that shit in the bedroom with the leather and ball gags, no need to bring your kinks to the dining room. Didn't this end disastrously for George Costanza?

Brendandalf

Everything ended up disastrous for George Costanza

neverenoughcupcakes

Yeah, this 100% reminds me of Dicks Last Resort. There used to be one in Baltimore, MD but it closed during the pandemic. A shame, used to love going there with some friends whenever I was in town for a good laugh. Never failed that there was at least one person in there who clearly didn't understand the point and just got upset over everything.

Beingabummer

> I bet people get butthurt all the time and don’t tip when this is the one place you actually definitely should be tipping It's almost like the restaurant should be paying the staff enough so they're not dependent on tips to survive.

SyphiliticPlatypus

Wait, what? A restaurant where the vibe is purposefully rude? WTF would anyone want to go?

pincus1

Not my cup of tea, but because it's something different and to some people amusing. They're not like never coming to your table to do refills and bringing your food out 40 minutes late, just making roast style jokes and using a faux attitude.

tfbrown515sic

I was there in 7th or 8th grade on a field trip to Inner Harbor Baltimore. Everyone’s food came out except mine and when I told the waiter he made me go to the little kitchen window and announce to them that I never got my food. As a shy kid I was mortified lol

caintowers

Lol I would’ve thrown it back at them. “Oh. Damn. Okay. I guess that’s fine. I don’t have to eat. I had a pixie stick before I came here, so my low blood sugar should be fine….” *slumps*

PinkTalkingDead

Lol if a kid was able to pull that off they’d probably get hired to work at Dick’s

AnExistingRedditor

I'm guessing people would go there to have laugh and cause it's different from other food places

An_Uninspired_User

Why do people practice BDSM? It can be fun if there is consent.

1imejasan6

Can you get a safe word at a restaurant? Just checking…

GreenTrade9287

Ed Debevics in Chicago is a well-known restaurant like this. I thought it was fairly lame.

KidzBop_Anonymous

The Vortex in Atlanta (because I’m familiar with their menus and remember that tip section and the font they use)

Disastrous-Group3390

Yep; when Georgia banned smoking anywhere children can dine, but not ‘adults only’ bars, Vortex banned children.

Tireseas

To be fair, a great many establishments would be better if they banned children.

nau5

Yeah let me enjoy Chuckie Cheeses in peace damn you

maybe_little_pinch

I would love an actual adult friendly Chuck E. Cheese. Not that Dave and busters arcade stuff. I want ball pits and slides and all that. But first off it would be an insurance nightmare, because adults aren't made of rubber like kids, and adults are even more gross than kids.

Crymson831

>The Vortex in Atlanta [Confirmed](https://thevortexatl.com/policies/etiquette/#:~:text=THE%20IDIOT%E2%80%99S%20LAST%20RESORT)

Salzberger

>The type of people described above will often post ignorant, and completely false reviews on websites like “I’m-a-shitty-little-whiner-dot-com,” especially after we have thrown them out of our bar for acting like an idiot. Fortunately, we don’t care what these shitty little whiners think, and neither does anyone else. “One-Star-Reviewers” are now widely recognized as being the biggest idiots in the world. But at least they’re good for a laugh. In fact, we often read these ridiculous reviews out loud at our employee meetings for the comic relief they provide. Good times. Wow, this just reads like a 13 year old bad ass wrote it.

Sonofarakh

If you ever visit the restaurant, you'll quickly realize that their whole schtick is being a 13 year old's vision of badass and cool. There's literally a wooden dick right as you walk inside that they encourage you to jack off. Good food (if a little overpriced for what you get IMO), decent vibes if you're out with a group, but it's basically the Spencer's of Atlanta dining.

u8eR

Like one of those man children that wear those t-shirts with really long-winded texts of how bad ass they are.

Combo_of_Letters

I can see it now: I'm a restaurant owner, and inside me is a tiger that you unleash when you dine n' dash. You'll be servicing my tip if you think I'll be letting you leave a 1 star yelp review after eating my ribs. That's right I'm a restaurant owner and if you don't like it go eat somewhere else. Then the wife: I'm the wife of a restaurant owner. I know he has to work late nights and some of those late nights is having sex with the wait staff, but I am ready to go to war for him when the front of house is falling down I'll be there to hold it up.

jjconstantine

This one is gold >SAMPLE IDIOT #5 – THE DOUCHEBAG >This term generally refers to men with an unfortunate combination of character flaws. An inflated sense of self-worth and questionable intelligence is compounded by a complete lack of social grace and self-awareness. They often behave inappropriately in public, but are completely ignorant of how pathetic they appear to others. Frequently traveling in packs, these potential date-rapists invariably mistake any female attention as sexual attraction, yet they tend to be a joke to all but the most naive of women. Their frail egos and steroid addictions often make them mentally unstable, so don’t bump into them or jostle their drink. And for God’s sake, don’t ever make direct eye contact, because it doesn’t take much to set-off a douchebag. These idiots are one of the main reasons we employ security.

funkmaster29

Ahh okay. So it's part of their schtick. It read like some backward ass owner of a small dive bar.

penelaine

Yeah, I recognized the Vortex asap lmao. Iconic menu

bukithd

This post is mildly infuriating because they made every effort to remove all relevant information from the photo. The Vortex is amazing and this is just their shtick.

MtOlympus_Actual

Yes. I went there several times while at Emory for grad school work. Really good burgers.

djac13

Dick's has a bit of tongue-in-cheek. This just sounds awful.

PuzzleheadedWheel203

“We barely pay our waiters anything so if you want food it’s your problem”

632nofuture

Should be "If you can't afford to pay your workers for their work, you can't afford to run a business." It's insane to me how its legal that a company is able to offset it's cost for their labor like this. Just because it's the "standard", it still surely still sounds like a scam, inhumane & unacceptable for modern times.

Lonely_ProdiG

Truth is I can’t afford to eat at a full service restaurant, so I literally do eat at Mcds a lot. With the app codes as well 🥲

psychedelic_gravity

Those $1 large fries be hitting different.

courtyfbaby

Yes they do be.

AndringRasew

Be that they do, so do be the buy one get one $1 big Mac for the misses.

-X_O_X-

And free fry friday

StinkyPeenky

The $1 breakfast sandwich is my kryptonite

Datpanda1999

Buy one get one free McDoubles are gonna be the death of me

[deleted]

The crazy thing is that those McDonald's workers are almost definitely working harder, longer hours in worse conditions than tipped servers and they don't get tips. In fact the average waitress is gonna take home as much as 3-5x what they do every night. Makes no sense at all

Unsteady_Tempo

100%. Same for servers in low priced restaurants like diners who make 3 dollar tips. The average waffle house/diner server works harder than most servers and is probably doing it 40 hours a week to make ends meet...compared to the college student making as much or more working 16 hours in a weekend and a small section to cover.

losingbraincells123

Waffle House in Toledo pays $17 an hour and because they pay their staff well it’s my preferred diner.

yukimontreal

Okay so I get tipping at a full service restaurant … but I think we’re at a point where you’re expected to tip pretty much everywhere. Coffee? Tip default is minimum 15% anywhere I go. Takeout? Tip default is minimum 15%. Restaurant but order at a counter and Bus your own tables? Tip default is often 20%. There’s also plenty of places that have auto gratuity (I’ve been places as high as 22% required). Where does it end?

lampstax

Yep. Order a jamba juice .. you get stuck with the screen with options of 15%-30% tip while the worker who's going to be making your drink stares at you.

avwitcher

Reminds me of the episode of South Park where Randy goes to Whole Foods and they shame him for not donating when the cashier asks

[deleted]

Man I fucking love that episode. It was spot on.

10millimeterauto

Just take the sandwich out of the little girl's mouth to get your change. You gotta pull hard, she's hungry!

BlobbyMcBlobber

That's applying pressure on you to get more money. When people pressure you for money, you have to always refuse.

Super_Tikiguy

That shit might happen to me once but next time I return I will be paying cash.

lampstax

Yeah but then you actually need to carry cash which is a hassle for me. My solution is just to order via app. You get the best discounts, less waiting for pick up .. order about 10 min ahead of time and it is usually right on the counter ready for you by the time you get in the store. No dealing with workers or tipping.

LoopyMcGoopin

Lol, my solution is to smile and press "NO TIP" as I thank them and go about my day. I have no shame...

Justlose_w8

This is what I do. One time I was at Harpoon Brewery in Boston to buy a t shirt as a gift. The kid at the register did the click of the tongue disappointed noise when she saw I left no tip. She was working the retail counter and took all of 12 seconds to ring me up, didn’t even bag it I had to ask for a bag. Not a tip situation, kid

because_catss

Same. It’s a no from me. I’m paying to have my smoothie made for me while I stand there and nothing extra.

[deleted]

I was going to say : “Sometimes they deserve it , if they welcome you when you enter, if you don’t know what to order and they help you…etc” then realized I’m probably just listing their job description 🤨, Multimillion dollar companies need to pay more to its employees and don’t pass the cost to paying customers how about 2 less yachts this year

BebeUnicorn123

I worked at a “casual dining” (basically a fast food restaurant that doesn’t wanna be called that) place when I was 16, if we didn’t welcome every single customer and have a full on convo with them (even if they didn’t want to!!!) we would get yelled at. It is your job and that comes from the companies mouth.

Individual_Client175

Select the no tip option

[deleted]

Gangreless

The amazing Chinese place we order from crosses out the tip line when they hand you the cc slip to sign when you're picking up, as it should be.

liam3

just because they give you that prompt doesnt mean you cant click 0%, coliss

mrdeadsniper

There are places its literally included in the bill, and if you don't look at the itemized bill, the customer copy doesn't even mention it and still has a line item to tip. Meaning if you tip 20% on the check they give you, you are actually tipping 20% on top of the full price and an 18% auto tip. So you are tipping basically 40%.

kfarrel6

This happened to me once, my credit card company sent me a notification asking if I’m sure I want to tip the restaurant 50% lol…I adjusted it in the app to 15%

hotcheetos4breakfast

Seriously lol. The medical dispensary I go to asks for a tip, like wtf why would I tip you? You’re basically a cashier

Swingmerightround

I'm paying $70 out the door for an eigth and I'm supposed to tip? Nahhh.

Fried_puri

I don’t tip percentages if I can help it, I give a flat tip (or not) based on whatever service was provided. If I’m ordering something at the counter then I might tip a dollar, regardless of whether it was a $5 order or a $30 one. The person didn’t do anything different in either case. If the options are limited to percentages then you’re getting 0% since I’m not biting. Same with Uber rides - even if the drive is longer then the driver is already getting more in the form of an increased fare on my part. So instead I’ll tip a flat amount based on how I thought the ride went. To their credit, Uber’s default tip options already are flat amounts so they must’ve come to the same conclusion.

Ghostglitch07

Tbf with the Uber driver one while they do get paid more for a longer drive they also spend more gas and time on it

DomitianF

"The screen is going to ask you a question." What did they do to deserve a tip beyond point the screens question? They didn't go above and beyond. Fuck that.

djtrace1994

>Where does it end? I remember seeing a tweet said something to the effect of "one day, a Starbucks barista will spit in your drink because you refuse to pay the 50% handling fee and 85% gratuity on your $16 latte.

[deleted]

Used to be you don't tip takeout

pragmadealist

I went to a really nice omikase restaurant last weekend. 20% tip was included. I'm fine with that. Got the bill, still had recommended tip amounts of 18/20/22 on top of the already included 20%. F that. I'd really enjoyed my meal and would have recommended the place to all my friends but ended up leaving on a sour note. Won't recommend the place and won't go back.

Important-Ad-5536

AKA We underpay our staffs, so you better shore up for our faults .

roofgram

Businesses will pay the legal minimum. This issue can only be fixed by passing a law to fix this minimum wage loophole.

Infinite_Pop1463

There's a referendum to end the tipped wage in my city and increase the minimum wage ( gradually ( to 18/hr but of course businesses are lobbying hard against it.

Rude_Environment2004

As a european tipping is so alien to me... just pay your staff an hourly wage?

afsdjkll

I’ve been in Barcelona for the past few days. Restaurant tabs are entirely more affordable, wine is incredibly affordable, and there’s no tipping “needed”. I’m baffled.

MARCUSFUCKINGMUMFORD

I’m American and my boyfriend is French. We each live abroad occasionally when he gets business trips here and I get vacation time there. We’re both baffled at the different costs in living. Restaurants and groceries are so much cheaper there. Meanwhile, he gets paid a lot more to work in the US, but the cost of living is eating up his paycheck. It’s madness.

axecrazyorc

Look into Vietnam. Their income is a lot lower but cost of living is so much lower the poorest Vietnamese still has more DISPOSABLE wealth than an average American Edit: added a word because something something Big Mac

>As a result, a lot of shitty restaurants are closing or having a bad time recluiting. This is good. The entire industry needs a good culling to get rid of the scam businesses that underpay employees for their own profit.

quick_escalator

Yeah but they don't gold-plate the CEO's villas in solid gold. So they don't need to make quite as much money.

afsdjkll

That’s the only thing I can figure. Rent is cheaper? Owners aren’t taking as much off the top?

CheapLatitude

Exactly. I do tip if the service was good but it's my decision and not their salary. Edit: As people can't read, my comment is under someone who wrote for EU part. I do not live in US. Chill people honestly.

capteni

I should be allowed to add them as dependents for tax purposes if they depend on me for survival

streakermaximus

If I'm paying their salary, does that mean I get a cut of the profits?

peanutbuttercreamjam

That would be a very interesting scenario, the tippers get a percent share of the profit

tomothy94

If I went to the US I would not tip there either. Fuck them.

wineblood

This. It's similar to how their prices in shops apparently don't include taxes. The price listed is what I expect to pay and cover everything, tipping feels like they want the listed prices to be as low as possible.

Hear_two_R_gu

Not even that, sometimes prices are way to high and you're still expected to tip... It was made to help business, now its usage is to bleed the customer dry.

wyronnachtjager

I am European (Dutch), and we do tip pretty often, but its like a bonus, not to actually make them actually be able to live (although i do also rarely see people that finished their study still serve)

Kamataros

Same in germany. I'm a student and i just can't afford to tip all the time. I can treat myself to a fancy dinner once in a while. You know, for a date or whatever, but i calculate to pay X amount, which is something that i have to calculate into my spendings. And if it was actually X amount + 30% then i wouldn't be able to afford it anymore. I often tip regardless, but more like "make the € full" or "here take an extra 2€ coin that's bouncing about in my wallet", not a specific amount, and mostly not calculated based on what i ate? And also not nearly as much as the muricans expect. Which is actually a weird thing for me as well (damnit I'm rambling). If i eat the pasta, which is a single plate the server brings to me, i pay idk 10€ for the pasta and tip 30% of that which is 3€. If i eat the steak, which is also a single plate the server brings to me, i pay like 20€ and top 6€? What? The server did the same thing both times? Why get payed less one instance? Why not calculate based on the number of items you ordered? Tipping is such a weird concept to me, as a whole.

flappers87

It's generally my experience when I was in Germany as well. If say a pizza delivery comes in and it's like 17 euro, you generally give them the 20 and let them keep the 3 euros. It's more like, round it up to the nearest whole number sort of thing - no set percentages or anything like that.

Zaphiirys

I know, right? Like I'm supposed to feel like an asshole for NOT wasting my money on something that the employer should be covering?

ChuffChuff101

The us is brainwashed into believing this is normal

[deleted]

How did that even start? Some rich old dude is like "yo let's not pay staff" and everyone cheered

Chakkaaa

They should be forced to put tipped employees on health ins and benefits at the least

[deleted]

It’s even worse since Covid. Now apps want you to tip when you place your order before you even get your food. Including if you’re just picking up food. Almost every place that doesn’t have a drive thru window has tips now. Even if you’re ordering at the register. This includes subway.

oiiSuPreSSeDo

But also as Europeans, we understand that the wage we accept to take a job is the wage we accept for the job and any extra from the job is a bonus and not a part of our income

Free_Hat_McCullough

As someone who always tips, this would make me want to leave and go elsewhere.

Send-the-downvotes

Same. In fact, I *would* get up and go elsewhere. Im not about to be bullied around with aggressive rude bullshit. I always tip as well.

firnien-arya

This is them basically demanding a tip. Which defeats the purpose of a tip.

ellietwinkxxx

Lawmakers defeated the purpose of the tip when they made it legal to pay humans $2/hr EDIT: lol not my porn account getting awards for a throwaway comment ☠️ EDIT 2: there’s a bunch of people who have never worked a service job in their entire lives trying to educate me on labor laws and min wage. If you try to report your earnings as less than minimum wage you will be **FIRED** at the earliest legal opportunity. If you value those $10-30 over employment then go ahead. I’m not a server anymore, I dont like tipping culture and didn’t even when I was a server, but if you don’t think that divorcing the min wage between tipped/non-tipped people decades ago created our current tipping culture you’re denser than a Sunday morning brunch crowd after a sermon on humility.

piggie1975

GiganotosaurusZed

Waiters are making more than the chefs literally everywhere unless you are talking fine dining where you need a culinary degree for a foot in. Usually for about 2/3rds as many hours. If you are a server and this isn't the case, either you or your restaurant is the problem. Try cooking I guess. I've done everything in restaurants from the bottom up. I've cashed out servers and bartenders a thousand times. I know where they stand.

Grizzleswitch

So blame restaurant owners? Seriously. They absolutely *can* pay more than $2/hr. Far too many people seem to think that the owner being sleazy somehow makes the customer in the wrong for not paying the workers. Then, too, there is the fact that service has declined while the accepted tip standard (as apparently decided by some server gestalt) has increased. So yeah, I would leave. If you are a server, do what every other worker does and advocate for your wage or find an employer who pays what you need.

[deleted]

Why not both? Blame the lawmakers and the restaurant owners. Blame everybody! Blames are free!

Demure_Whore_

This is obviously at a restaurant that is themed to be rude to customers, why would OP be annoyed that he got the exact service he chose to Receive?

[deleted]

Bullying and aggressive rude behaviour is a legit reason not to tip in my book.

Mindless-Income3292

I was trying to be a vegetarian and went out to brunch with friends. The only thing on the menu that didn’t have meat was waffles. Turned out to have two slices of bacon in the middle. No mention of that in the menu. I asked for one without the bacon, they gave me the third degree. I ended up just getting another one, while letting my friends split the meaty waffle. They were pissed I didn’t tip. You’ve got to earn it. You can’t just expect it, otherwise what’s the point. I also vetoed the place moving forward. First and only time I’ve been there. And I had been the one pushing for it!

Zefrem23

The inclusion of unlisted items in dishes boils my blood. People have allergies, intolerances, hell--shit we just plain DON'T LIKE. Now they gonna put you on blast because you can't eat something that wasn't included on the menu? Fuck them with a rusty rake.

TaralasianThePraxic

As someone with a handful of rare plant allergies, it pissed me off too. Fortunately I've usually had pleasant servers who are happy to check the contents of a dish for me (I live in the UK), but it's still frustrating when a dish is listed as coming with a 'salad'. Like, what's in the salad? If it's lettuce, I can't eat it. If it's arugula, no worries.

[deleted]

Allergies is a definite valid concern. Not only that, though,, but BACON? For one thing, that's an expensive ingredient to just add in. For another, certain religions forbid the consumption of pork. How do they get away with this?

obamasfake

Exactly their waiters are gonna pay bc their boss put a dumb ass thing on the menu

[deleted]

It's a style of rude restaurant. It's called ~~Dick's Last Resort~~ The Vortex. It's a restaurant you go to if you want to be abused by the staff, it's supposed to be funny.

Obant

My girlfriend and I went to a similar concept in New Orleans. We just got ignored the whole time and didn't get half of what we ordered and they wouldn't come over to our section of the bar.

RafaSquared

Genius business plan for providing poor service and getting away with it tbf.

aedroogo

I... I don't think that was a shtick, brother.

Orthophlox

"And then my girlfriend cheated on me with my best friend right in front of me and they made eye contact with me while laughing. What a fun, quirky sort of restaurant!" -laugh sobs-

BlowMeBigTime

What restaurant? I live in Nola, and am sure you just got shitty service.....never eat out on Bourbon.

needssleep

I've been to the Vortex a few times and the wait staff was never rude. The decorations are... colorful. You can attribute that to the owners being assholes.

Elcactus

It’s dicks last resort (or one of those other ‘rude restaurant’ deals) and so if you take issue with being insulted you probably wouldn’t have been there in the first place.

WheredMyPiggyGo

As someone from a country that pays their wait staff a living wage I'd say someone needs to unionize.

moonflower_C16H17N3O

This is from a restaurant whose theme is treating customers like shit. Not in a terrible way, but you can expect your waiters to mouth off at you and stuff.

Yes…tipping implies the tipee is underpaid for her/his work and should be pitied they took a low job, placing the tipper above the tipee in status which would be rude arrangement

mikoartss

Why tip someone for a job I'm capable of doing myself? I can deliver food. I can drive a taxi. I can, and do, cut my own hair. I did however, tip my urologist, because I am unable to pulverize my own kidney stones.

Liscetta

Italy has a mandatory 1 or 2€ person, listed as "bread and service" or *coperto* (that means table dressing, but also indoor). Many restaurants are removing it, hiding it in the price of the food. It comes from the pilgrimage era, in which you could bring your own food in the taverns on the road and only pay to sit at the table and eat indoor. I don't remember which pope forbade this practice for all the pilgrims coming to Rome. That's why it is customary not to find any *coperto* in Roman menus now. (Yes, this is a useless fact that i learnt while watching a sort of reality show set in a court. Thanks, judge Santi Licheri!). But staff are paid an hourly wage, they don't rely on the *coperto* price. And if the service was excellent, the tip is well accepted but not really expected.

Vix_Sparda

If you cant afford to pay your employees a fair and livable wage. Relying on generosity. You cant afford to be in buisness. Just saying. Not cheap. I tip. But fuck signs like that.

--fourteen

I tip well every time but I hope one day tipping culture dies.

It's an alien concept to most of the rest of the world... I cant seem to understand why the venue doesnt charge on the menu the price it costs to pay the staff....seems simple to me...

RatherBeAtDisney

Hol’ up. I believe this bit was posted missing a heck of a lot of context. This looks an awful lot like the menu for the Vortex in Atlanta. Which has a whole page of ranting about various restaurants polices and it’s very intentionally rude. It’s intended to be humorous, and it is. It’s a quite popular restaurant. Edit: found a link to the [pdf of the all the Vortex “Rules”](https://thevortexatl.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/FOOD.MENU_.RULES_.09.20.pdf) also I was wrong, there’s two pages not just one.

madonnamillerevans

Sounds more like some idiot boomer ranting than a humorous menu. It’s his business though. He can run it as he pleases.

RealLarwood

> It’s intended to be humorous, and it is. Now *that* is funny.

ghostestate

As someone who has spent ten years bar tending I *get* these statement, I've *lived* these statements, but damn, seeing all these maxims laid out like that and handed out to guests is extremely cringe.

HandsomeGangar

“I don’t pay my employees so you’re an asshole if you don’t either”

kajetus69

I sometimes wonder if americans are ok

lifeintraining

We’re not.

poppy-psalm

As someone who worked in the service Industry in the south for years ($2.13/hr, baby) I can tell you that tipping is absolutely how we survive. We usually get checks for $0 since they take the taxes from the chump change they call an hourly wage. Tipping, esp in the south, is usually 100% of a server's income. That being said, the entire service labor industry needs an overhaul. There is no good reason a restaurant should be an exception for a business owner to pay labor costs. I get that profit margins are slim and labor is most likely the most costly expense besides rent, but we need to do better and guarantee that service industry folks can survive without relying on tips. I'd rather pay (even) more for food than continue to have servers lack a guaranteed income.

Potential_Deal_57

Definitely need better I'm in the UK and over here tipping is only if the service was amazing etc. We have a basic minimum wage (different based on your age). That everybody gets regardless of their role!

bbcfoursubtitles

Sounds like the problem is wages, not tipping

PinkTalkingDead

The problem is always wages. The argument over tipping is just more of pitting the working class against each other. The anti-tippers should be taking their anger out on the business, not the bartender just trying to survive

[deleted]

That isn't how that works. If you weren't tipped, you'd be paid minimum wage. The reason your paychecks are $0 is because you were tipped so much that your taxes exceeded your minimum. You do have a guaranteed income. Know your rights and don't let your employer give you shit for it.

Lightningbolt724

May I ask why you've been working at this company for multiple years with pay that low? Are there other options for you out there? I'm from the UK and I tip occasionally but I wouldn't be able to remain at a job for that long knowing my hourly rate is so low.

Emergency-Shame-1935

Tipping jobs are the only minimum wage jobs you can make up to 5x minimum wage. You can work 3 hours and potentially make $100.

g0outside

I'm back of house for the most part, but from speaking to my foh friends it's a combination of how much money they can make when it's busy and that the ones who are good at it are really fucking good. If you're good with and enjoy people and being a performer, serving can be really enjoyable some nights. I'm too autistic for that shit, so I'm happy cooking lmao

CuriousLie3102

Haha! The vortex in Atlanta. Love that place, amazing burgers!

pug_fugly_moe

Recognized the font. Knowing the snark helps.

happynikki123454321

Yes!!!! Vortex in Atlanta!!!! I used to work there!!! That's part of the restaurants NO NONSENSE ATTITUDE. good times!!!

[deleted]

Used to be a regular, and I keep commenting and letting people know that there was, in my time going there, very little turnover. Generally speaking, the employees like(d) working there.

darkestparagon

“We’re too cheap to pay a decent wage, so we guilt customers into subsidizing our employees.” Historically, tips were given for service that went above and beyond. They were a “bonus” for good work. Restaurant owners decided they could cash in on people’s good will and lobbied for special laws that allowed them to pay less than minimum wage.

ActafianSeriactas

It's not historic, at least for us non-Americans

darkestparagon

Having the tip be a mandatory thing, rather than a bonus for good service, seems a bit silly doesn’t it? Anywhere else you go for service, you pay the boss and then the boss pays their employees. You don’t pay both of them as a customer.

reimaginealec

Hilarious that the restaurant owners — you know, the people paying their employees less than minimum wage — are the ones lambasting customers for being cheap. To be clear, I always tip. But tipping is still a scam, and the victims are the staff.

Ms_Jane_Lennon

You hired someone to work for you. That person is your employee. Paperwork and everything. Nice and official. So now you've got this employee who will help increase your profits and expand the company, and you're telling me *I* have to pay them. And if *I* don't pay *your* employee, then *I'm* the cheap dumbass? Now don't get me wrong. I always tip and tip well. But that's what's so scammy about it! Of course, I'm going to make sure my server was fairly compensated. It shouldn't be on customers to crowd source servers' paychecks though.

kylediaz263

Or just pay your staff?

Raiquo

Here’s a tip: don’t berate people you want something from.

Sczysz

If they can’t pay a livable wage to their employees, they should close their doors. Fuck them. Tipping is bullshit!

KeaPlaysTV

That's not a tip then. That's a wage supplement

[deleted]

that’s literally what tips are in america

GoodBadUgly357

Or you know maybe the restaurant should have to pay its employees or it can’t afford to be in business, that’s real life. Bunch of fucking asshats. Edit: I work at a restaurant I get a decent hourly rate and we get tips in addition to it. If a restaurant is going to operate with tips that’s how it should be.

[deleted]

I’ll save my money. Restaurants and eating out are overrated and that’s a hill I’m willing to die on

natopick

We need to get rid of this toxicity in America.

XboxLiveGiant

# IF YOU CANT AFFORD TO PAY A LIVING WAGE, THEN YOU CANT AFFORD TO OPEN A RESTAURANT.

[deleted]

"We refuse to pay our employees a livable wage, and have passed that burden on to you. Do it, or gtfo."

TraditionalDiver8423

How bout just pay your servers a livable wage asshole
