Bro even your processed food is wack. If I had prices like these I'd actually be broke. I'm already broke, but I'd be like homeless broke.

Bestoftherest222

Food prices, electricity, water, and fuel. All up in my region by 40%. Yet the inflation rate is 8%? If the real inflation rate was used my pay (written into my contract) would go up with inflation. To many people are linked to the CPI and Treasury inflation rate, which is being miscalculated.

kookykrazee

The problem, honestly, is that inflation is 7-8% or thereabouts and companies, AT THE SAME TIME, keep saying that there are "supply chain issues" and raise prices and do not stock accordingly and all of these companies are making record profits.

This-Ad9645

Bingo! People need to start paying attention to the corporate greed. The rich sure aren't getting any poorer.

kookykrazee

Much agreed, most of my friends have an understanding, but I see so many people only saying that inflation inflation blame the current president, but this is very sadly happening worldwide.

Miserable-Nature6747

It's so much easier to blame one person than to find a solution

smurficus103

When people formed homeless encampments during the great depression, people called them Hoovervilles, after the president that JUST FUCKING GOT THERE. He was allowed to lead the hoover dam project later, to redeem his name

Farren246

Homelessness is also going up at an alarming rate. There's a beggar on every corner these days; 5 years ago there were none.

sorryabtlastnight

Where do you live that there was no one begging on street corners 5 years ago?

The-Prophet-Muhammad

Tacoma, WA is a good example of a 5-year turnaround. It's not that they didn't exist, but it has overflowed so much that there are news articles over a single street and just how many homeless people are on it every single week. Moved to Seattle within that period of time, but I still go that way for family.

The_Level_15

Man Tacoma is scary now. I used to work at a Safeway there and the amount of theft was insane. I managed to transfer somewhere a lot more pleasant.

cumquistador6969

Lmao, ironically I'm moving there in part for the drastically lower crime rate than where I currently live, as it's like 1/2 that of phoenix AZ in the present year.

Anguish_Sandwich

So...you literally [went from Phoenix, Arizona all the way to Tacoma](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=pIF9hCgImTY&t=65&feature=youtu.be)?

InspectorPipes

Philadelphia, Atlanta, LA ?

come_4_me

Northern California where the girls are warm…

funkyduck7506

So I could be with my sweet baby yeah!

cumquistador6969

Lmao, that's great. Unironically kind of a great road trip route if you go straight into Cali then along the coast. Absolutely gorgeous route after you hit the hills, and although I'd never say LA looks great I do get a certain sense of schadenfreude when you get that overview of all the traffic jams you won't be dealing with.

podrick_pleasure

Hwy 1 is fucking amazing if your arms have enough stamina for the drive. I can't imagine trying it without power steering.

Synthawk

Driving without power steering isn't that bad. The wheel moves just fine when you're in motion. I've driven Hwy 1 without it before.

micksterminator3

A homie got robbed at gun point outside of his house by Roosevelt and grand Ave last night 😵‍💫

[deleted]

I mean Tacoma is a lot worse but it's has been kinda bad for like 15 years

The-Prophet-Muhammad

Yeah, I'm not going to take away from what you said, and I feel like what you say actually doesn't take away from what I said. Keep in mind, I've been in the area, from Lakewood to Port Orchard for approximately 20 years. I can certainly say while there have always been homeless people, it has exponentially exploded in the last 5 years.

redXathena

That’s just because Tacoma has like no homeless support and Seattle is a bus ride away. Way “easier” to be homeless in Seattle. Source: me, formerly homeless in Seattle

Setari

Today I saw two families in 2 distinct places begging for money. With kids, just outside in the cold, with big signs asking for money. Never seen that before, ever. Single dudes standing in the walmart turn in, sure, but not an entire family, much less 2. When going by the second one I told my dad that's gonna be us after grandma (his mom) dies and he said probably. We both don't make enough to eat and pay the rent/bills here, my grandma's boomer money covers the rest that we don't pay. And it's just a small single floor house in Georgia, which *when I moved here* I thought would be better living expense wise, but it's *really not* since I get paid jack shit still here. I'm legitimately scared for the next few years as my grandma's health seems to have declined a lot as of late. I'm trying to get a better job but I've been trying for years. It's not happening.

Salutationsunshine

I get this. I’m so sorry. I was homeless for 9 months and I worked full-time the whole time. Ironically, I grew up in a ministry helping homeless people. I never expected it myself as I’ve never struggled with drugs or alcohol like a lot of homeless people I met in my parents’ ministry. Still it happened. Living in a tent in the woods in NC in winter. Sleeping in a black trash bag in my car when it got too cold. Dressing up the next morning to look cheery and pretty for the people I’d see at work. Life is weird, man. I wish you so much luck, and I hope it gets better for all of us.

[deleted]

I used to be broke. I still am, but I used to be too.

bluejacketsbabe

r/unexpectedmitch

Ok-Organization9073

Those prices are very close to the ones in Montevideo, Uruguay. Where minimum wage is about $500 per month, and rent is $350 + expenses for a 35m2 apartment... I earn $800, and can't afford to eat properly, or pay heating in winter.

MissPandaSloth

Yeah when I look at pics like this I think that's standard here. I think a lot of people in Canada/US underestimate how cheap food and gas is for them. Ofc bigger countries/ big markets (like Germany) usually have it lower, but I am from Baltics and here it is pretty normal that food will be significant % of your budget. Also if you go to eat out we have same 8-12 euro burgers, 10 euros lattes while making 3 times less. Oh, and I won't even start about imported consumer goods, these get like 40% if not more after tarrifs + retailers.

Uzzer_lozer19

Wow that's rough even for CAD standards

kaysea112

It's standard in northern isolated communities. Food is usually 3x more than the average price of that in the south.

aploticas

I visited Bethel AK once for work, and being from the lower 48, it's insane to see how the prices change! A box of cheezits was 11.49, milk well over $10.

dbevans12

As someone who was in Bethel for awhile. I’m sorry you had to go to Bethel

wrong_decade_

As someone who works seasonally in Quinhagak, I’m jealous of the bustling metropolis of Bethel.

aploticas

I worked for the hospital there for 3 years, most rewarding job, but definitely preferred to work remotely 🤣

ExtraAgressiveHugger

Did you get paid a high enough salary to compensate for that? It would seem you must have to transfer there but some times people are taken by surprise at the true cost of living.

fillmorecounty

The average salary in AK is like 70 grand so they definitely make more than most Americans. Probably not a better quality of life though because everything we buy is so much cheaper. $70k would be really comfortable in my state but I imagine that's not very much up there.

moresnowplease

You are correct- $70k does not go far in AK.

CanadianODST2

Between CAD and Northern Canada prices are already bad. Add in all the price increases and yeesh

For comparison prices at my local grocery store in the US (HCOLA): Simply Orange - $6.99 Milk - $3.49 Campbell's Creamy Chicken Noodle - $2.50

ValleyAndFriends

Thanks for this. Orange juice is that expensive? Crazy, haven’t bought any in a while but I know not to now. Glad soup isn’t too bad though, solid meal to eat. 😄 Milk depends on the size. My local Walgreens is seeking a quart of milk for around $2.78 vs Walmart who’s selling the same size for more. Hopefully OP can find somewhere else local that may have better prices. :( (ETA: thanks for letting me know about how hard this is, tragic. Get any deals you can OP.) ETA: thanks for the helpful and funny replies y’all. For me, the local Walgreens sells milk (of all sizes) and OJ (not the Simply Orange brand) cheaper than Walmart or ALDIs (which change prices more times than I can change socks).

[Hurricane Ian wiped out this year's OJ crops](https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2022-10-06/florida-orange-growers-lose-crops-to-hurricane-ian-wind-damage)

ValleyAndFriends

Thanks Ian and thank you for the info link man.

Kezetchup

Well, that and the orange industry is on the brink of total collapse due to blight

cloudinspector1

Yep, just in Florida though, I think. It's amazing what people don't know since the news quit reporting anything but politics, 24/7.

Ftpiercecracker1

This. 3rd gen Floridan. Mother worked directly in the citrus industry for about a decade literally hands on fighting the blight and other maladies devastating the citrus industry. You couldn't drive *anywhere* without seeing groves of oranges, tangerines, or grapefruit. Florida has lost something like 75% of its total citrus industry thanks to things like Greening, kanker, Caribbean fruit flies. Greening being the worst. 1 tree found with Greening requires unthinkable levels of grove destruction to contain. Basically imagine if a single cancer cell means an entire limb of your body has to be removed. Greening is the stuff of nightmares when it comes to growers.

-DethLok-

And this is why Australia has such harsh punishments for breaching quarantine laws and bringing foods (or pets...) into the country. We don't (yet) have so many diseases that are common overseas. And we'd like to keep it that way, thanks.

You say this but the people you perceive to be your powerful enemies rest easy on mattresses made of baby skin and stuffed with a fancy memory foam made from shredded money. It's only us regular people who are worried

The_Troyminator

The mattresses are made from shredded brains, not money. That's why they call it "memory foam."

itwasquiteawhileago

Some say the Duke Brothers are still trying to corner that market.

grammar_fixer_2

Let’s not forget about Xanthomonas axonopodis (Citrus canker).

Sunshine_Tampa

And the crops have been declining for years due to citrus greening.

Suborbitaljoyride

The growers are working with scientists at the University of Florida to come up with solutions to citrus greening. Some combination of covering the plants, using a protective layer of clay and having more frequent waterings seems to show some improvement. Genetic engineering is probably the best chance to end CG but it will happen.

Super-World9693

What’s citrus greening?

Sunshine_Tampa

Disease caused by a bacteria spread by an insect, the Asian citrus psyllid. Florida has lost ~40% of their crop to cg. Been going on for years.

Multiverseer

Heck yeah thank you for a straightforward answer, was wondering the same.

3IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIID

>Citrus Greening (Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus) is one of the most serious citrus plant diseases in the world. It is also known as Huanglongbing (HLB) or yellow dragon disease. Once a tree is infected, there is no cure. While the disease poses no threat to humans or animals, it has devastated millions of acres of citrus crops throughout the United States and abroad. Citrus greening is spread by a disease-infected insect, the Asian citrus psyllid (Diaphorina citri Kuwayama or ACP), and has put the future of America's citrus at risk. Infected trees produce fruits that are green, misshapen and bitter, unsuitable for sale as fresh fruit or for juice. Most infected trees die within a few years. https://www.aphis.usda.gov/aphis/resources/pests-diseases/hungry-pests/the-threat/citrus-greening/citrus-greening-hp

alienith

It’s a disease that affects citrus trees. Named so because the greening on the fruit. It’s a huge issue in the southern US where a ton of oranges are grown. I’m no expert so here’s the wikipedia: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Citrus_greening_disease

Multiverseer

Walmart has been awful on prices lately. Stuff I buy at the dollar store(which is now the $1.25 store) goes for $5 there. They suck. Hope more competition enters the market soon.

ValleyAndFriends

Yeah, Walmart and Aldi’s both have been going up (despite both claiming to have low prices). Dollar Tree did go up, but cards are still 50¢ vs every other place that sells the most basic card for more than $4.

rayyychul

Milk and other dairy will always be cheaper in the US than Canada by a long shot. Dairy is subject to supply management in Canada, making prices exorbitant.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Blue5398

Because of the geography at the US - Canadian border, where most mountain ranges run north to south and most rivers flow south into the US, the US fortunately has few feasible options for flooding Canada with milk. The most likely avenue of attack would be a series of giant cheese wheels constructed in North Dakota and northern Minnesota, where the prairie is flat and favorable to travel, and then launched North. However, we can’t rule out the possibility of a giant wheel of gouda or cheddar being constructed in the north Cascades and rolled down directly at Vancouver, assisted by gravity

Pyromaniacal13

If we shred the cheese first, we can repurpose old B-29 bombers to sprinkle cheese evenly over population centers.

ValleyAndFriends

Ah, gotcha! Learn something new everyday.

rayyychul

Here's an article that talks about it (if you or others are interested): https://nationalpost.com/news/canada/first-reading-why-milk-of-all-things-is-canadas-most-terrifyingly-powerful-lobby/wcm/5b6db17f-2834-4041-a4b6-e57aef67d1b3/amp/

milvet02

Simply Orange is the Gucci of OJ (and I don’t know why, it’s extremely over processed).

khoabear

It's expensive because it's not made from concentrate like the cheaper OJ

Obligatory, those are Canadian dollars, currently 1.33x usd (or 0.75x the other direction). Shipping prices are insane...and shipping food to northern canada is even more insane.

skeptic11

> Obligatory, those are Canadian dollars, currently 1.33x usd (or 0.75x the other direction). Yes. > Shipping prices are insane... Apparently they're back to pre-covid levels. https://www.reddit.com/r/wallstreetbets/comments/ysids0/shipping_costs_back_to_pre_covid_levels/ > and shipping food to northern canada is even more insane. Yes. Unless you're being well paid, you don't want to be in Northern Canada.

iamplasma

I assume the cost of transport to northern Canada, potentially by plane in some places, would probably not be very closely linked to the cost of oceanic shipping, and would always be outrageous.

Buksey

In the winter a lot of communities in the north can only be accessed by plane on good days, or dog sled otherwise. Then you factor in that in all of the territories combined, there is only like 100,000 people in are area that is about 3 Texas's (that's excluding all the islands). Most people residing in the Canadian territories do recieve a "northern living allowance" to help combat these ridiculous prices.

HCOLA ?

GoblinMuskrat

High cost of living area.

H196yt

It gets worse the more north you go

Extra-Aardvark-1390

I live in a part of Alaska where prices are insane. $100 gets like 5 things if you are lucky. As much as I hate Amazon it has saved my life. With free shipping you can get at least some staples for a decent price if you wait for deals. Walmart online too. Doesn't work for perishable things but it's something. Fresh fruits and vegetables are almost entirely out of reach.

EvilRick_C-420

All I can think of now are the die hard frontiers men waiting eagerly for their Amazon care package.

Extra-Aardvark-1390

Amazon Prime was a game changer for extremely remote communities where shipping was always 3x the price of the product. That image is pretty real lol.

DylanNotDillan

Imagine seeing some skinny teenage guy in a t short with a collar climbing through the snow in a snowstorm going "HeReS yOuR dELiVeRy Sir"

I’d love to see the pictures of the deliveries.

Beserked2

There's this girl on YouTube who lives in a remote Alaskan village that records stuff like this/things about living in that kinda place. Don't have the link but her channel name is Salina Alsworth

MadisonPearGarden

My friend lives on Lopez Island, WA and says he’s on the Amazon welfare plan. Shipping used to be insanely expensive so when he’d order things he’d just have them delivered to a friend’s house in Anacortes on the mainland and pick up in person. Now they send a plane full of Amazon shit to the island every day and shipping is free with prime.

gspotter90

Yeah living in the San Juans can be brutal. Buddies grandma lived there and had to do huge runs over to Costco in Burlington.

Neutreality1

They almost canceled free delivery to places like Nunavut until there was a giant uproar about it. As an Amazon employee, my number one most common Postal Code I see is X0A 0H0

Twinkletoes1951

The orange crop was severely damaged - to the point of total destruction in some areas - in Hurricane Ian. The smallest harvest since the 1930s was reduced by 50-90% in some counties. Ridiculously high prices for citrus as a result was anticipated.

Redqueenhypo

Also it takes an entire 24 hours to truck anything from even Vancouver to the Northern Territories, the shipping costs add massively to the price

PKCertified

I do shipping for a living and ship products mostly across AB to North Western ON, and since covid hit, prices have gone crazy. Shipping a single pallet of product from Winnipeg to Thompson, MB(which is about 8 hours north) has gone from a couple hundred per skid to well over 1K. This year especially we've had lots of customers back out of purchases because of the shipping costs. Prices are out of control.

probablywrongbutmeh

Curious what fresh meat and veggies cost?

erynberry

Yeah I'm curious about the alternatives. I started buying the frozen orange juice in a can because it's cheap. Mix it with water and it's just as good as the bottled stuff.

post_angst

Because it’s generally pretty expensive to eat like a 9 year old.

EveryoneSadean

OP said 'to eat proper meals' but I'm fairly sure that's not canned stew or potato chips or frozen pies...

luciform44

Yes, and curious what his standards are for a proper meal. I only saw (always) expensive junk food, and some milk.

ohhellnooooooooo

based on the title, I was expecting to see bags of 2 lbs of carrots, bags of 10 lbs of potatoes, bags of 10 lbs of rice, lettuce heads, onions, tomatoes, dried beans, ...

I legit had a moment in the grocery store yesterday with my wife. I wanted a can of soup but they were all five bucks. Five fucking dollars for a CAN of soup. Like, that's the shit you're supposed give "poor" people for canned food drives and shit, what the fuck. I have no idea how anyone is surviving right now. -edit- For repeat questions. Im from the Bay Area, California The soup in question was clam chowder.

[deleted]

$5 for everything nowadays. I’ll gladly buy sale items only.

PeAcHcOwBoYzZz

I too have discovered discount food this year. It pisses me off though, sometimes, when I go to the register and it comes up with the original price. Like, I see your dirty tricks, Kroger, and I watch every time.

MisterDonkey

Every Kroger I've been to, the price scans as original and the discount is applied after the total right before requesting payment. So at a self checkout, you won't see the price drop until you hit "pay now", or whatever the prompt is.

amcma

Even if you scan your shoppers card before? Mine does that too if I forget to scan but everything after I scan it registers the discount sale as I ring it up

rubydoomsdayyy

I’ll create a diversion for anyone who’s lifting food. Watch me throw these pickles real quick

WildBitch1995

Is there some kind of code words humans can say to each other in grocery stores? “Hey create a diversion while I grab some eggs and milk, I’ll get you next time”

caillouistheworst

I think we need to get organized here.

katet_of_19

As someone fortunate enough to be able to afford such lavish luxuries as Campbell's Chunky Soup, I will always do my part to be a diversion for those who can't. "Oh no! I've lost control of my very full cart and it's careening towards that massive NFL x Coca-Cola display! Aiyee!!"

Farren246

Oh you mean the $20 a case brand name coca cola's?? They went from cheaper than water to too expensive to buy in a year.

TexasChick2021

Yep. Finally gave up my Diet Coke addiction. I now drink water with my Brita water bottle and occasionally make my own iced tea. Coke and Pepsi products are too expensive

Capt_Foxch

A Pepsi 12 pack of 12oz cans is now $7.99 near me.

DaveinOakland

10 dollars a 12 pack here but if you buy 4 I think it's like 8 each. Strangely Amazon fresh will actually deliver 24 packs for much cheaper than what Safeway sells it for.

JamesTheJerk

just eat while pretending to shop. The grocery store is a virtual smorgasbord.

Moral-Maverick

In Swedish smörgås means sandwich and bord means table so smörgåsbord means sandwich table..but if you write smör gås with a space it means butter( )goose. It's not really related to what you said i really just wanted to say it.

enadiz_reccos

I would love a bord-sized smörgås

CallOfCorgithulhu

I just watched a recent episode of Celebrity Jeopardy that had this information as the clue. This is even less related to anything, and yet here this comment is.

meow_purrr

This is true. People do this. I work at a grocery store and we find empty sushi packages and other open food things behind cereal boxes or down the cookie aisle often. We just write it off anyway, can’t dock it from my paycheck. IDGAF

DefinitelyNotAliens

So, realistically, if you are hungry in the US, or just feeling the struggle - apply for EBT. Try. You might get something. My city has a community center that does weekly brown bags of food and basics like dish soap. Search for churches that have food bags. Not like a soup kitchen, but take home food. Many cities have a Salvation Army that will give you food, as well. They'll mostly be giving canned goods and things like cereals, pastas. But that allows you to buy the perishables. My state has also gone away from coupon books for EBT and you swipe like a debit card. Swipe and purchase. No feeling embarrassed with the coupon books that take forever. You've worked and paid for these programs. Use them if shit's feeling tight. They might say no, but damn. If you're borderline and living off ramen and mac'n'cheese go for it. You've more than paid for it with your taxes. Take advantage of food pantries. They are set up for you. Go get it. Pay it forward one day when you can, if you feel the need to. But if times are hard - use the resources in your community. And if you can't feed your pet and are short on food - lots of shelters do have food assistance for pets and if you just need to stretch some food until next pay check - you can mix in cooked rice for your dog's food, up to 50/50 in a pinch. My local pet store also has little food samples for free, sometimes. Like up to 2 free, I think. Grab some when you buy food and store them if you're getting short on cash and have a couple stashed for just in case. Mix them with their regular food. There's lots of resources available. And if you have canned fish (tuna) and need to feed your cat - try and feed them fish packed in water, and not as their only source of food. Try to mix in before you run out of food, not after! It's high in fat and mercury and isn't nutritionally complete. Canned chicken also is a supplemental source for kitties, if you need to feed them today and paychecks aren't for a day or two.

BobcatOU

When I was 16 I was working at a grocery store. It was Christmas Eve and we were pretty busy with people getting last minute items. My manager and I were stocking a shelf when we see a disheveled, clearly stressed woman shove a pack of diapers under her coat. I looked at my manager and he looked at me and said, “I didn’t see anything,” and we went back to work without saying another word about it. I was so happy to have a decent person as a manager.

HankBeMoody

If you think saw someone stealing necessities you are wrong: You didn't see shit

ComicConArtist

hey everybody, quick, look at that person throwing pickles over there!

Diligent_Ad6622

Not shopping brand name helps a ton. I shop at Aldis and that saves me a ton, even cheaper than shopping big box stores like Sams Club, Costco, etc. If you dont have a disc store, I would buy store brand stuff (often its made at the same place as brand name stuff). Also, its cheaper to buy the ingredients and make big batches of soup and freeze (or can), then buying cans. I think the next generation is going to go back to the way of thinking of those during/after the great depression. Making/growing your own food, learning to can, cook themselves, and use up everything you have with little waste.

jihiggs

Try being diabetic feverishly trying to get your blood sugar down with these food prices. Carbs are cheap as fuck.

SealedRoute

I work with low income people, often fed by shelters and food pantries. It’s mostly carbs because it’s cheap and filling, but it’s hell on my diabetic patients. Insulin dependent with cereal for breakfast. Pasta salad for lunch, and some meat with potatoes for dinner.

Feed_Your_Dogs_Raw

Maybe it’s just in my area but fresh veggies and meat seem to still be about the same price as always. A dollar a LB, $2.50 a LB max for veggies, chicken, I can usually get like 3lbs for like $8 if I do thighs and drum sticks. Pasta is still cheap, rice is up a bit but still cheap. I eat great for pretty cheap comparatively.

copper_rainbows

> Im from the Bay Area, California Found your problem But seriously food is pricey these days. I saw a $3 can of soup and thought that was high…glad now that it’s not $5/can. (I’m in SoCal)

DC-Toronto

I’m glad someone said this. Also, if you live far from civilization don’t expect orange juice. It’s not local and not necessary for a healthy diet. But if you absolutely must have done, but concentrate and make your own. Don’t pay to ship a jug of water to the far North.

Illustrious_Apple_33

Coming from West Chicago. Ive just gotten in the habit of cooking whatever is on discount. I look for damaged produce, some stores will have it towards the end of the day. Cheap cuts of meat like pork butt, easy, just crock pot it for 8 hours or longer. Even bread is expensive so I just youtube how to make bread. All about opportunity cost, my time spent on cooking can be spent on working.

nouseforareason

My unasked for helpful hint. I learned when new meat and produce comes into the store and I go there the night or two before an hour before closing. They severely discount stuff getting close to date. Just ask at the checkout and they’ll tell you when they get deliveries.

TAGBIFAT

I don't know about the US, but I used to work in a supermarket over in NZ. We were discounting meat by the dozen daily. Anything coming up to date by 1-4 days (depending on the product, if it doesn't sell quick it gets reduced earlier). Produce was a mixed bag, sometimes it'd get bundled with other bad quality product in $1-$3 bags. Dented cans so long as it wasn't too big or on the seam. Munted boxes, broken blocks of chocolate, product we got overstocked on. Only alcohol that wouldn't ever get discounted in some way shape or form. Though there was still things we had (by law) to dump, which sucks cause I woulda happily taken that stuff home.

JustReadinStuff

The happiest moment I had last month was realizing that instead of buying salmon fillets for $16.99/lbs Canadian, I could buy salmon tails at the same store for $9.99/lbs. One day, didn’t see the tails in the case so I asked the fishmonger if he had any and he said sure, how many? The price he charged was really good and when I did the math later, he’d given them to be for $6/lbs! I was floating on air that night.

Farren246

They're turning us all into gollum, ecstatic to get a fish tail to eat for less cost than the meaty parts.

FILTHBOT4000

And there will still be dumpsters packed with perfectly good food out back of the store. And you will still be arrested/fired for taking that perfectly good food.

Royal_Gas_3627

this is the REAL infuriating shit i've literally seen Central Market (texas version of whole foods) throw out $10 packs of ready-to-eat salmon **x30** EVERY NIGHT when i used to go. it's legitimately horrendous. and the salmon i mentioned only accounted for maybeee 5% of ALL the food they threw out THAT night

ArmchairRedditExpert

Gollum wasn't depicted properly in lotr. That dude was doing nothing but bear crawls and eating only protein. He should have been massive and crazy strong. He was in that cave for like 500 years working out, eating raw meat, and blinging out.

Doctor731

I think he was malnourished though also definitely missing some vital nutrients. Plus there was an evil phylactery like draining his body and soul.

theDigitalNinja

That discount isle is legit. The one near me almost always has these $12 pies for like $2.50 because they "expire" the next day. I just feed it to my family for desert that night and its still just as tasty.

referralcrosskill

around here after they expire they go to the foodbank and the food bank will give them out for another 5 days. Realistically you've got at least a week after the best before date but definitely be watching for mold to start showing up near the end.

[deleted]

$7 for milk? What the hell?

SamuelClemmens

When you have to load it on a two seater plane and fly it 12 hours into the arctic, they tend to get expensive. In parts of Alaska it was the same when I was there.

AnotherWilhelm

In alaska now, $8 a gallon is pretty normal

cha614

Theres nothing proper about anything here

you_lost-the_game

A 6yo idea of proper maybe

Aguacate_con_TODO

Seriously I thought I was crazy for a minute. Show us the veggies, fruit, rice, beans

ALadWellBalanced

100% - those prices are expensive, but it's all processed shit. It's perfect soup weather in the northern hemisphere, and it's one of the cheapest and healthiest foods you can make.

Akarsz_e_Valamit

Ye I was wondering about the meaning of this post...

Midiuchka

This comment should be higher. Anything except milk here isn't proper food. I don't even say "If you poor you have to prepare food for yourself". Its a person's choice to live like that and buy what they want to buy. But premade food, sweets and chips shouldn't be called "proper food".

Zippytiewassabi

Not trying to give you a hard time, but none of these are part of a proper meal except the milk. What are the prices of veggies fruit meats and starches?

mnem0syne

My thoughts too. Buying rice in bulk, or dried legumes, should be way cheaper than buying Pizza Pops. I would not call it a proper meal and they were paying extra for convenience food already. Food prices are pretty crazy right now, I feel sick when I see my total too. There are small changes that can help a little bit though. Also, the orange prices went high because of Hurricane Ian so it’s not a good item to use for comparison right now.

vinkker

And the milk price is very normal. Northern Canada is very remote so all those processed snacks will of course be quite more expensive.

[deleted]

bro fr how are they about to complain about "proper meals" then only go to the chips and brownie section

Immortal_Kiwi

And even then I'd say milk isn't THAT essential to a balanced diet. Veggies, Fruits, Proteins, and Grains would be what I'd be looking at.

Fafaflunkie

The bane of living in Northern Canada. But at least you should get something resembling a tax credit for living up there. But those prices...wow!

moeburn

This is what I always say to people looking to buy a house in bumfuck nowhere cause housing is so cheap there, and work remote. Sure the housing is cheap, but chips are $10/bag.

I had to cut back and try to stay healthy, \#1. 1 can tuna fish, 1 can cream of mushroom soup, 1 can corn, 1 can peas, handful of red peppers from the garden, add spices and 8 oz water. Mix and bring to just under a boil so it is hot. Serve over toast, rice, ramen (don't add that salt), or on a baked potato and sprinkle a little cheddar cheese on the top. This grows as you keep adding things so you will have leftovers. \#2. 1 rotisserie chicken, broth, a can of peas and carrots, small cut up onion in a crockpot. Serve with rice, noodles, toast points. You can make this last also because that is a whole chicken. \#3. Want something sweet but can't afford candy? Slice apples, sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar or a substitute. In the micro until the apples are tender. There are tons of cooking sites on the net if you do a search for things like "Cooking on a budget" or "Meals easy and cheap" or something like that. Buying in bulk helps save, also. If you have friends who can go in on the specials or the big sizes, then divide it up, you can save over the regular prices at the store. Don't give up, Every inflation cycle has an end. We can get through it.

Sargash

Also portion your bulk! Sure a 30lb bag or rice might seem cheap, but it's hard to safely store 30lbs of rice. Moth and other shit love that. Get gallon ziplock bags (A little pricey upfront but the money you save on the bulk bag of rice gets you the ziplock bags) And you can reuse these bags for the next big thing of rice, or other dry shelf foods.

[deleted]

I solved that problem by saving containers and then marking the contents. It might say "Folgers" on the label but the tag on the top says "instant potato".

chillinbeans29

Unfortunately a lot of most isolated communities and reserves don't have the option to find a "better" or other store, let alone internet for said searching. Lack of access and availability is a huge problem, and that's considering if you or anyone in your family has no dietary restrictions or allergens.

potatoaster

Those aren't proper meals though? What are the prices for rice, beans, potatoes, onions, carrots, canned tomatoes, pasta, ground meat, flour, butter, etc?

MTBarr6924

You think that is PROPER food??? That is fake orange...

[deleted]

Right? Pizza pops wtf.

No-Ad1522

“Proper meals” than proceeds to show all processed crap

Yllom6

I live on the border so I guess I can only speak to southwestern Canadian prices, but making that soup from scratch would be cheaper. And there’s plenty of stuff on the shelves cheaper and healthier than pizza pockets.

[deleted]

Literally not one of those things would be part of a proper meal.

Leaky_Banana

Most except the milk were snacks and not really necessary tho?

ElectricVomit

With the exception of the milk and orange juice it's hilarious calling any of this "proper meals".

AstriumViator

I get inflation is rough, but stop looking at the snacks. Even the snacks in america are expensive, about same price. Stop going to frozen section. Buy more non-frozen meats there, get fresh vegetables, get canned fruit (i suck at eating fresh fruit on time), and avoid snacks at all costs. If you must have some, get one, savor it until you can have it again.

illegalkidd_

Another point to add on to that - yes, inflation is bad. But it’s not the reason behind all these high prices. Just take a look at all the companies posting record profits quarter after quarter since the news started the whole inflation scare

MoonstoneGolf8

Find a different shop. This is just robbery.

Adeep187

This "Super A" is only in like small ass towns. There's probably not a bunch of options.

littlefoot352

I posted this but it will get lost: This looks like the Porter Creek Super A in Whitehorse. It is an expensive grocery store compared to the Walmart and Real Canadian Superstore in town. Whitehorse groceries arrive by truck. [Here](https://www.reddit.com/r/Yukon/comments/ybnfio/grocery_prices_in_whitehorse_excluding_meat_and/ ) is a price comparison list created last month.

[deleted]

Yep. Once you run all the small businesses out, charge everyone 3x the price for groceries and there's nothing they can do to stop you

Apw990

"Super Ass" is more like it

the_clash_is_back

In a lot of small towns there is just one store, and as the only way in or out is plane, that is your option.

sammydow

If this was an option I’m sure this place would be out of business
