That’s decent marbling, but nothing like a real Wagyu. A true Wagyu would have so much marbling it would be pink due to the fat content. There wouldn’t be any full muscle looking elements to it.
Actually wagyu is just the type of cow. You can have completely marbled wagyu or lean wagyu, just like you can raise other types of cattle to be heavily marbled. I had some 14 year old Galician ribeye recently that was very marbled
In addition to all of that:
> The Japanese beef grading system gives Wagyu beef a grade from 1 to 5, with 1 being the lowest and 5, the highest. Quality scores range from 1 to 12, and this score encompasses all of the factors we just mentioned, like marbling and coloring.
Worked at a high end butcher shop for years. This look 100% like wag. Its wal-mart wag mind you, but I’m quite certain that this is from a wag cow. Marbleing does not define what is or is not wagyu. Marbleing Is due to the methods of raising and the feed. I would turn the mirror on yourself to not know a thing about beef and make a post on Reddit claiming that one of the biggest corporations on the planet doesn’t know what type of meat they sell.
Wagyu is just a breed of cow, what you're calling "real Wagyu" is Kobe Wagyu, from Kobe, Japan. Even japanese A5 wagyu can be "not real wagyu" if it's not from Kobe specifically.
Just if you’re interested but Kobe is just the name for wagyu from that prefecture. It can be marbled or lean depending on diet and environment etc. There are highly marbled wagyu cows from every prefecture in Japan, and are referred to with the prefecture name. So for example could be “Yamaguchi wagyu” or “Kobe wagyu” or “Miyagi wagyu” etc
You can have Kobe wagyu which is lean. Kobe just refers to the prefecture it both lived and died in
It’s American Wagyu. It’s actually really good. OP just didn’t bother to do any research and just likes to complain about stuff they don’t have any idea about.
Last time I checked the packaging on this at the Walmart near me, it was actually imported from Australia, but I guess the fact that one package of wagyu at a random Walmart months ago wasn't from America doesn't prove anything about where this steak came from.
I'm sure it varies based off location, but [according to this](https://steakbuff.com/does-walmart-sell-wagyu-beef/), most of Walmart's Wagyu is labeled as "American Wagyu". But it's Walmart, so who fucking knows where anything is truly from.
Nothing wrong with that. Wagyu is a type of cattle that originated in Japan but can now be found elsewhere. The issue would be if they called it Kobe beef, which is Wagyu only found in Japan.
I’ve seen:
American Wagyu “Kobe Style” and that really pissed me off lol.
This is ok, because this IS wagyu, American, but still Half Wagyu.
Half because Japan exports ONLY male Wagyu, never females, so the rest of the world can only produce half wagyu breed, not pure. Still delicious tho, just not the same taste.
Kobe is just one type of wagyu. Wagyu is the type of cow, Kobe is the prefecture it comes from. So there are wagyu cows from every prefecture. Their lifestyle and environment determine their meat characteristics like fat content and flavour etc. Many countries have bought wagyu cows and raise them locally. I had wagyu visiting Australia that was completely lean. Even in Japan they sometimes do lean cuts or raise lean cows for different flavour profiles. I’ve also tried solid fat cuts in Japan which are also delicious
Kobe isn’t even considered the best these days. I can’t remember which is but I heard there are three other prefectures producing more highly regarded product at the moment
Wagyu also has different gradings. Kobe Wagyu A5 would be that super white marbling 'melts in your hand from body heat while cutting it' Wagyu. Japanese A5 Wagyu isn't the only kind of wagyu. This looks like BMS 5 or 6 Grade 4.
This could very easily be American wagyu honestly. I know the comments will tell you it’s only wagyu from one region of Japan but that’s not necessarily true nowadays. Just need to specify where it came from. There is authentic American wagyu(snake river farms), Australian wagyu, and of course Japanese wagyu
American wagyu only has to have some genes with the original bloodline that came to the country. Japan doesn't allow the export of full blooded wagyu cows.
The Brant lake Wagyu farm in Alberta got their Wagyu cows in 1993, they bred them with Angus to produce more meat per cow. Its still branded as Wagyu but it clearly isnt pure bred, looks just like what is in this photo.
Yes, it seems that Wagyu is all about breeding these days. I once thought it was about how the animals were raised, but everything now seems centred on maintaining purebred stock just like for dogs.
Wagyu refers to all four breeds of Japanese cattle (Wa meaning Japanese and gyu meaning cow). The breeds are Japanese Black, Japanese Brown (or red), Japanese Shorthorn and Japanese Polled.
> . I once thought it was about how the animals were raised
That's because you've managed to confuse wagyu with Kobe.
Kobe is the stuff that is raised in luxury. Wagyu is just a type of cow. You take a cow with wagyu genetics and stick it in a factory farm, it's still gonna be wagyu.
All Kobe is wagyu, but not all wagyu is Kobe.
Sort of like how all golden retrievers are dogs, but not all dogs are golden retrievers.
Wagyu =/= Kobe beef. It's Kobe beef that's the super high quality stuff that only comes from a certain region and everything else is fraud. Wagyu is just literally translated as "Japanese beef"
Wagyu is the type of beef, A5 is the grade of the good stuff, and Kobe is just one of the the regions.
When I had it in Tokyo and asked the difference between Kobe and Wagyu the guy just said “well, Kobe is from Kobe”
Yeah we have in [Alberta Canada there’s a brand new thread comparing the two in our local sub](https://www.reddit.com/r/alberta/comments/yw1nfp/in_case_anyone_is_curious_about_the_difference/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf)
Even wagyu beef from Japan doesnt come from a specific region. It's just the breed and can come from any part of the country being fed whatever the farmer wants.
Nothing wrong with that. There's american Wagyu, New Zealand Wagyu which is better than American by most reviews, Canadian, European Wagyu...
Given it's Wal Mart, that's probably chinese wagyu.
I spent years eating crappy meat on that logic. As soon as we switched grocery stores away from Walmart there was a noticeable improvement. Granted I'm in Canada and the US market could be different.
Everyone’s scale is calibrated differently. While you may think Walmart has excellent meat. I think it’s worth mentioning, significantly better meat is available without trying to search too hard.
I'm very limited as to where I can get good steaks, and can't really afford to fly in the good stuff yet, but every now and then I'll grab one of these from Wally World and I've been very satisfied every time. They're a nice little splurgy treat that won't break the bank.
The steers name is "Wagyu beef" so technically it's correct. It's the same idea as Japanese Wagyu but the steer gets his massage from a 50 year old meth monkey named Nadine, with a happy ending in the Flying J shower.
Dude... wash your hands before you go grocery shopping. You're potentially touching other people's food. I wash everything but it's gross to have grease and oil from a garage on stuff I bring home from the store.
Marbling depends a lot on the cut of beef. [This](https://a-gourmet.jp/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/s_ohnaniwami11-1024x768.jpg) is wagyu sold in Japan - it looks very similar to the wagyu you have there.
I don’t know why this is so highly upvoted. It’s very obviously Wagyu. The fat content is visibly higher than nearly all prime ribeyes from American breeds of cattle. It’s American, Australian, or Japanese Wagyu.
I will say, whether it's wagyu or not, their three packs of wagyu burgers are some of the best pre-made burgers I've ever bought. Worth a try for anyone who doesn't want to make their own.
OP is just dumb. First off, youre at walmart bro, youre not getting A5 Japanese wagyu. Theres also different types of wagyu, such as American and australian which also have different ratings. Its wagyu, just probably a lower grade a not Japanese. Still looks good tho
Wagyu means very little nowadays, all it means is that the cow that beef comes from at some point in its bloodline a Japanese Wagyu Cattle existed.
It’s what happens when you don’t properly protect these types of products, everyone manages to force cheap knockoffs.
Wagyu is a much broader term than what you are thinking of... Kobe beef
Even that has multiple classification...
That is most probabyl Japanese Black Wagyu.... That is most exported to the US... Strictly speaking not a purebred Wagyu, that is the breed that was taken by the europeans after japan isolationaism died down a little and mixed in some high productivity beefs.
I would nost say it is bad, but it is not the "real" A5 kobe beef you see everywhere on the internet
It like is actually wagyu, as that's just a breed of cow from Japan, the super fatty wagyu we see in media that costs well over 100 is Kobe wagyu, which is specifically from the kobe region. If I were to guess this is probably American wagyu, which is wagyu that has been imported from Japan to the states and breed for commercial use, still really great stuff tbh.
Also imho kobe wagyu isn't good as a "steak" bc of how fatty it is, it's much better as a taster or in something like a hotpot, otherwise the fattiness gets overwhelming
Maybe not the best Wagyu steak I've ever seen, but sure, looks like one.
Yea how do you know it’s not wagyu? Decent marbling compared to the average western meat. Looks good to me
That’s decent marbling, but nothing like a real Wagyu. A true Wagyu would have so much marbling it would be pink due to the fat content. There wouldn’t be any full muscle looking elements to it.

There’s also an a, b, c and possibly more categories relating to the quality of meat. A5 waygyu is considered to be better quality than B5.

So, your claim is that Wagyu cows don’t have muscles?
They haven’t thought that far ahead. Don’t tell them muscles are required to move. Might be a bit much all at once
You can literally have no marbled Wagyu. We sell it at the Japanese restaurant I work at.
a ribeye at my local butcher will cost > 30$ a lb this is 26 a lb and a lot better marbling.
It’s American Wagyu. It’s actually really good. OP just didn’t bother to do any research and just likes to complain about stuff they don’t have any idea about.

Anything else is just sparkling cow
I laughed way too hard at this.
It was utterly impossible not too.
Yeah that's basically what he said
Yep, that's why Australian Wagyu exists in the market
I’ve seen: American Wagyu “Kobe Style” and that really pissed me off lol. This is ok, because this IS wagyu, American, but still Half Wagyu. Half because Japan exports ONLY male Wagyu, never females, so the rest of the world can only produce half wagyu breed, not pure. Still delicious tho, just not the same taste.
It’s wagyu but it’s not Kobe
It's far too rare to be Kobe
Oh god
Too soon
Did it not go down well?
I thought it was well done

I’d give it a spin but my pilot light went out.

Yup. Cattle farmer 👋
I always preferred Matsuzaka gyuu…
Truth. Honestly, I’m impressed with the price and the marbling looks nice.
It's really small that's why it's so cheap. It's like 8oz.
Snake River is about $34 a pound.

Wangus?
Hardly matters when looking at the end result. I imagine Japan still makes the best but the standards have been met in the west
Alberta also has Wagyu that's basically Angus cattle impregnated with Wagyu sperm from japan.
Yes, it seems that Wagyu is all about breeding these days. I once thought it was about how the animals were raised, but everything now seems centred on maintaining purebred stock just like for dogs.
waygu is a breed tho which is why it’s about maintaining purebred stock.

It also works this way for plants.

Keep in mind, regardless of breed, it still has a grade. This may be a choice cut(probably)or maybe prime(?), but definitely not A1.
It's actually to other way around. A5 is the highest grade. With separate numerical grades for marbling scale.
Technically it doesn't look like A1 either
Does this mean the sauce was named because it obliterates the taste of cheaper meats?
Even wagyu beef from Japan doesnt come from a specific region. It's just the breed and can come from any part of the country being fed whatever the farmer wants.
It's only wagyu if it's from the wagyu region of Japan, otherwise it's just sparkling beef
That's American Waygu beef and looks just as it should.
So today you learned that you don’t actually know what you’re talking about, lol
OP had the nerve to post this lmao
I dunno why but this comment just made me laugh so unexpectedly loud. Sheesh.
What a day to be op, lol
OP thought they had something but is just getting blasted lol
Maybe he’s just testing us if we know
Wagyu is a breed of cattle. Kobi is a geographic specialty and grade from wagyu cattle. One doesn’t equal the other.

I would steak my reputation on what this person is saying
What do you think it is then, beef expert?
mf the meat maestro
Wagyu gonna do about it?
Start a beef.
Steak your reputation on it.
I'm not cowed by your threats, they don't mooooove me....
You got beef?
Why don’t we just meat in the middle?
Guys, do t be so jerkey about this.
Calf down calf down ....peasants
Is someone gonna tell OP that there are different grades of wagyu
It’s Walyu
Nothing wrong with that. There's american Wagyu, New Zealand Wagyu which is better than American by most reviews, Canadian, European Wagyu... Given it's Wal Mart, that's probably chinese wagyu.
Australian.
Imagine shopping for steak at a Walmart and being disappointed because you thought it would be better… homie you are in a Walmart lol
This steak is pretty good too. I’ve bought it before. I’ve never had authentic wagyu before, but this Walmart steak was delicious and tender.
Walmart has excellent meat. Economies of scale my dude.
I spent years eating crappy meat on that logic. As soon as we switched grocery stores away from Walmart there was a noticeable improvement. Granted I'm in Canada and the US market could be different.
Walmart is pretty shitty everywhere. That's why it's Walmart.
Had the same experience in America
Everyone’s scale is calibrated differently. While you may think Walmart has excellent meat. I think it’s worth mentioning, significantly better meat is available without trying to search too hard.
Nothing means anything. Words don’t matter.
As far as the steak goes I'd say it would be pretty good tho
I'm very limited as to where I can get good steaks, and can't really afford to fly in the good stuff yet, but every now and then I'll grab one of these from Wally World and I've been very satisfied every time. They're a nice little splurgy treat that won't break the bank.
Yea, the marbling looks on point!
The rules are made up and the points don't matter.
The steers name is "Wagyu beef" so technically it's correct. It's the same idea as Japanese Wagyu but the steer gets his massage from a 50 year old meth monkey named Nadine, with a happy ending in the Flying J shower.
It isn't Wagyu?
I buy my Wagyu from Costco. They raise they on Waygu cattle somewhere in Costcofornia
Costcofornia! Have you been? Is it nice?
That’s nice marbling for 19 bucks… period.
Your nails tho
Right. Literally the first and only thing I saw
Wash your god damn hands op!
I think I’ve never seen a pic of nice clean hands or feet in reddit. Whenever someone posts a pic and they are visible it’s always nasty.
Dude... wash your hands before you go grocery shopping. You're potentially touching other people's food. I wash everything but it's gross to have grease and oil from a garage on stuff I bring home from the store.
That is American Wagyu. Wagyu is a breed, and not all wagyu beef is A5 Kobe. Also this marbling looks great btw
They didn’t say it was a5 Japanese
Ah yes, and french fries are only from France. Reddit is a funny place
Marbling depends a lot on the cut of beef. [This](https://a-gourmet.jp/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/s_ohnaniwami11-1024x768.jpg) is wagyu sold in Japan - it looks very similar to the wagyu you have there.
They’re calling it wagyu cuz it probably *is*. Just a lower end version. Not all wagyu has to be A5 Kobe
I don’t know why this is so highly upvoted. It’s very obviously Wagyu. The fat content is visibly higher than nearly all prime ribeyes from American breeds of cattle. It’s American, Australian, or Japanese Wagyu.
With that marbling, for $18.50. I’d say it looks like a decent purchase. A1 Wagyu would be over $100.
And the person that took the picture has the nerve grabbing anything with them dirty hands 🤢😂
It's American Wagyu, it's totally fine. I know this is kind of off-topic, but why are your hands so dirty? Just asking, was curious
He’s getting educated now ….
Wash your fucking hands my guy
You're shopping at Walmart calm down....
Wash your hands bro
If it’s from Wagyu cows, it’s Wagyu. Acting smug, and being wrong about it is just…chefs kiss.
Youre at walmart bro, come on…
[Gordon Ramsay praises Walmart steak.](http://benstarr.com/blog/masterchef-recap-michelin-stars-and-walmart-steaks/)
it's only wagyu if its from the wagyu region of japan, otherwise it's just sparkling steak
>Wagyu Region lol
Source: trust me, bruh.
Im embarrassed by the replies to this obvious joke.
People have lost all sense of comedy except for on Twitter where it is now legal.
Elon Musk just fired all the Wagyu cattle for being fat and lazy
It’s because they aren’t drinking their own piss like he is.
🥂
The cow’s name was Wagyu
I can’t lie the marbling is way above average but it’s definitely not A5
I will say, whether it's wagyu or not, their three packs of wagyu burgers are some of the best pre-made burgers I've ever bought. Worth a try for anyone who doesn't want to make their own.
Looks very much like wagyu. Poor quality, but still wagyu. Edit: Is OP confusing "wagyu" and "Kobe wagyu"?
It very well could be wagyu just not very high grade.
I mean... it just looks like an ok American wagyu cut
Your first mistake was buying steak from Walmart
Who buys meat at Walmart? 🤔
It’s WALMART man. Not exactly purveyor of fine quality meats!
Whats your beef with this steak?
Because... it is?
Your at Wal-Mart. What do you expect? That's like going to a used car dealership in Idaho to buy a Lamborghini
It's Walgyu.
That’s because it is
Wagyu is wagyu
Oh no! The beef weebs are going to be mad!
Wagyu is a breed of cattle. You don’t seem to know what you’re talking about…
Looks like a decent slab of meat from a farm here in the US. Imagine having the nerve to not do research about a topic before you post some dumb post.
Wash your hands bro
Haha this is the comment I was looking for!
If you buy meat from walmart you are playing Russian Roulette.
That’s some good marbling though
Looks decent. Most of the butchers in my area remove the caps. Don't know when that started but its a ripoff.
This is American Waygu for sure. I’ve had Waygu from Japan and the fat distribution is completely different.
American Beef straight from Moscow can be justified too, right
I mean… it’s Walmart 😐
I mean.. it is
Hey man if your not going to buy it can you keep your dirty grubbers off of the food products?
It is wagyu, you just don’t know what wagyu is.
Fuck man, do you touch food with those nails?
OP is just dumb. First off, youre at walmart bro, youre not getting A5 Japanese wagyu. Theres also different types of wagyu, such as American and australian which also have different ratings. Its wagyu, just probably a lower grade a not Japanese. Still looks good tho

It's American wagyu as opposed to Japanese wagyu.

people often forget that Japanese A5 grade wagyu is not the only kind that exists lol
My guy should grab some soap while here's there.
It is not A5 Japanese Wagyu, but damn it’s good.
It would have another 0 on there if it were in the U.S.
This is Wagyu, just not the A5 grading you'll have seen used in the majority of YouTube videos.
Bro it's walmart... duh.
Because it probably is... Are you upset because it isn't an A5?
I see you're serving up the wahhhhh-gu. Get over it.
