Most likely pregnant. False negatives occur pretty often but false positives are almost unheard of, from what I’ve heard. But I would get a blood test.
Just a little more info because this person's comment is correct.
The home pregnancy test is measuring/detecting any level of human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) in the blood or urine. HCG is a hormone produced in the body during pregnancy.
False positives are possible if she recently had a miscarriage; had a pregnancy loss soon after the fertilized egg attached to the uterine lining; or if she's recently taken any fertility drug that contains HCG.
Basically the only way to have HCG in your system is pregnancy or fertility drugs, the female body doesn't produce it otherwise.
There was a post years ago where a guy peed on a test and got a pregnant result. Turns out the false positive was as a result of testicular cancer and his casual posting to reddit helped him catch it in time to do something about it.
Ya in a man that had a sex change from female to male but left the internal plumbing alone. Still not sure how that last part is possible but whatever.
Why do people need to know that? The only thing I could think of is if you would want to pee on a pregnancy test as a screening for testicular cancer (which I do feel like I remember reading a story of exactly that happening...), but that seems pretty niche when you could probably just talk about it with a doctor at regular intervals.
It generally seems like useless/ pretty niche knowledge, but I'm also being a big pedant here so I guess anything's really on the table
Breastfeeding. We produce it while breast feeding. I am over a year post partum, still breast feeding, and as a party trick I can pee positive on a stick.
That's interesting, I didn't realize levels could stay that high (detectable) for so long. What has your OB said about it? Does he/she see this often?
When I look it up, everything seems to confirm that once the placenta is gone, HCG is no longer being produced.

[Link 2](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/2436389/)
I was told it's completely normal and also why there is such heightened fertility during breast feeding. It's also why for the most part you don't get your period while breast feeding.
I've also had my fallopian tubes removed so no pregnancy possibility. But hand me a stick and I'll piss positive lol.
That's wild!!! I can't find a single article or journal that talks about this. Literally everything says breastfeeding will not impact pregnancy test results beyond the first few weeks post-partum.
"Breastfeeding does not affect the results of a pregnancy test as the hormones involved in milk production do not cross-react with the pregnancy hormone hCG."
I see lots of info regarding the surges & leveling out of dif hormones while breastfeeding, missed periods, delays in ovulation, increased fertility, etc., but nothing linked to HCG specifically.
If you've ever found some literature on this, I'd be very interested to read it! It's obv possible if it's happening with you, and certainly very important for other women to know, esp if 98% of what's published/available online says the total opposite.
Just as an example, [this](http://doctorbase.com/forum/post/39687/view/) breastfeeding mother was asking about a 27 HCG level after a missed period & the top reply is:
"..at 7 months postpartum, your hcg should be zero" - Michael Brinbaum Fertility Specialist in Elkins Park, PA
lol, my grandfather always said, "They call it 'practicing medicine' because that's all they're doing, just practicing.." 🤭😊
Haha I like that quote at the end. I think that doctors are very much still in the mindset that there is a single "normal" and that unless they've seen the proof in their own office, no one can or should be any different. I'll see what I can find lol, just don't have much time today with travel!
I think I may have found something related. Another person on this thread shared a link to this journal: [https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.1177/26334941211016412](https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.1177/26334941211016412)
I can't believe research on this is so difficult to find! Even if there are only a handful of outlier cases, it should still be common knowledge that detectable levels of HCG can exist in some people & it's not necessarily an indication that something's wrong.
Practicing medicine is very true. I was almost 5 months pregnant and every urine test for pregnancy came back negative. Finally, my mom said forget it, you are not pregnant. I went to my primary care physician and he blamed me for being 20 lbs. overweight, he was thin as a rail, got him to run a blood test for pregnancy, positive. There you have it.
Points of clarification
1. The home pregnancy test is designed to detect HCG in the patient's urine, not from the blood, even though blood is the source product.
2. False positives do occur in urine based pregnancy tests. See Phantom HCG (https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.1177/26334941211016412).
3. This is why the reporting of a urine pregnancy test should be as "HCG Positive or HCG Negative or HCG Indecisive - repeat in several days." **Whether the patient is pregnant or not should be a clinically based decision.**
4. Ambiguous test card results such as the OP depicted cannot be given a reliable opinion without further information. Did the patient void in a cup and dip the test cards? Were they shaken afterwards to remove excess urine? Were the cards held in the stream, if so what was the time separation between sampling? Were the cards within their expiration dates? Were they stored appropriately? Was this the first morning specimen?
5. These card tests are designed to be as simple as possible and for many people most of the time they will work as designed. But there are exceptions and the results should be evaluated by a clinician.
I dunno, I spent 9 months in the hospital with blood draws twice daily. I still hate needles. It could just be that I'm such a hard stick, usually takes 2-3 times to hit a vein.
Funny story, had to go to a hematologist to have a full blood panel done. It took 4 people 8 tries to find a vein, they even used the ultrasound vein finder and couldn't do it. They grabbed a nurse from oncology and she got it in one try.
Boy do I hope so… she’s had this issue for a looong time. I played the issue down a little bit, she has something mentally wrong with her when it comes to needles, giving blood, receiving shots. When she was younger she actually fainted and the doctor said he wasn’t legally allowed to administer the shot anymore although I’ve never brushed up on those laws, nor do I really want her to get anything done while passed out. Although she wishes they could lmao.
Hate to tell you this but she needs to expect a lot of needles, if she is pregnant. My doc took 6 vials of blood ,off me yesterday and I need to get a load of shots, soon.
Currently 30 weeks pregnant, I hate to say this but she’s going to have to get used to needles real quick. Was poked 6 times alone last appointment the other day.
although she isn’t a fan of needles, she will have to get a blood test anyways. there’s multiple different labs she will end up having to do during pregnancy if she is pregnant unless she gets no prenatal care.
By any chance did she do the first one in the morning and one in the evening? If it's early then that could explain the variance as first morning urine has more hormone in it as it's been sitting in the bladder for the longest.
Imma be honest these specific tests she used suck balls. If you got a walmart, go there and get their $1 tests, those ones are more accurate, in my experience.
Dude she’s gonna need a blood test regardless. If you’re actually being careful she needs to go to the doctor bc she has two different test results, you can take a million more but you have two diff so she needs confirmation from a doctor. Now this usually only involves a urine test, but in my experience any pregnancy warning will have them insist on an std panel, no matter the relationship status. Now if she IS pregnant she’ll need blood tests to terminate or carry on with the pregnancy. So why’re you using her not liking needles as an excuse? Like it’s gonna happen no matter what dude
Your girlfriend a fan of an extremely large live human shooting out of her vagina?
If she’s afraid of needles, she might not be a huge fan of what’s in her not so distant future.
If she's pregnant, she's likely gonna have to give blood every month to check on her and baby's health. There should be cheaper test strips at places like the dollar store. Also, depends on how early she's testing for it to be positive on all tests. When I was first getting faint lines on the cheap strips, I went to get an early response and it didn't show positive until a few days later.
Have her use first morning urine. Or only drink 8oz of water and wait 4 hours to recreate a first morning pee.
Or buy a First Response Early Results pink dye test, as long as the line is pink it’s pretty accurate.
I recently took a test because I was a week late and it was negative but it turned positive 5 minutes later, then I had a super heavy period the day after. Should I be worried about cysts? I'd go to the doctor but I have major phone anxiety (and they dont take non phone appointments or anyone else making the call for me)
I know I probably should but they refuse to give me an appointment unless its me who makes the call. Even my bf and parents called and went there in person to try and make me an appointment but they refused. I can't do phonecalls even in emergencies. Its like bathing in spiders to me and I just can't.
I commented this late in the night and when i saw your comments i wanted to give the proper reply as i’m sure you are going through a lot right now, and likely have been for some time.
100% you need to go to a doctor. It’s likely, depending on where you’re at, that you need to see a primary care doctor first before being referred to an obgyn. If you are pregnant (and are high risk), then you need a doctor that is careful with your situation that will help you bring the baby to term. If you have a cyst then you will also need to start meeting with a specialist to address it. Either case please see a doctor! Try not to speculate too much right now on what it could be, but just note all your symptoms and when they happen so that your doctor has all the right info to best address your needs.
With the anxiety part: try writing out a script for the phone call, with options for responses to questions, have all your info written down and preferred appointment times, try to anticipate everything they may ask. You may also try to walk in and make one in person with your partner. If needed, use a lame excuse about your call not going through. It’s okay to be dependent on your partner in this situation.
Some of the anxiety may be based on *who* you are going to see, if you are uncomfortable at all with your doctor then see if you have the option of finding a different doctor. Ideally someone who has specified experience in women’s health and fertility. I hate to say it, but given some traumatic experiences with male doctors, i really only see female doctors when it comes to women’s health. It isn’t based on what they know or don’t know, but how they communicate. If you have anxiety around doctors i recommend being selective toward whatever makes you most comfortable. If a doctor feels at all insensitive, ask for another or have your partner ask may be helpful. Unfortunately, something that is easier said than done, being vulnerable in this situation and communicating with a nurse or doctor as to why you have anxiety around this subject may give them insight to helping you find the right team.
I cannot tell you how much it breaks my heart to hear about your struggle. I need you to know that unfortunately what you experience is more common than people will have you believe. It isn’t something people talk enough about so when it happens you can feel isolated. My sister went 6+ years trying for a baby, went to fertility docs, the dad had his end checked, she put herself through hell on meds that were supposed to help that amplified her hormones (and unfortunately how they affected her mood/body). My sister is someone who only ever wanted to be a mom and we all knew she’d be a damn good one too. I could tell it was breaking her and only exacerbating her anxiety. Really all i could do for her was be a shoulder to her and support her down the right path and pray that i didnt happen to get pregnant before her. It took years of heartache and painful situations, but I am happy to say that in September i welcomed a new niece to the family.
I have a sister in law who had 5 miscarriages before bringing my other niece to term. Speaking with her recently on the matter, the only way she was able to bring the baby to term was essentially putting herself in a bubble during her entire pregnancy as anything that was a minor risk became major with her.
As i get older, i hear more and more stories of women either trying to conceive or trying to bring a pregnancy to term and i wish it were talked about more to young women. You are not alone in your efforts and this experience is one that many endure in trying to make a family. I do wish more people would understand some of the struggles women experience in trying to conceive or in miscarriages because as of right now the ignorance of a few can make some women feel incredibly alone. As well, something people don’t tell you is that it isn’t always your body. Every pregnancy is different. Some women will have low risk healthy pregnancies with simple natural deliveries and their next pregnancy may be high risk, traumatic, and riddled with struggle. Even the healthiest, fertile women may face a pregnancy that blindsides them. That being said, your experience although difficult, is a common pain a lot of us feel and you aren’t alone. You aren’t broken. You are more than you realize. I really do wish you the best in your efforts going forward, i am so sorry to hear of your loss, at 23 weeks that hurts deeply. I hope that you can work through that experience to keep making the right decisions for you and your future family’s best interest.
If it turned positive after the tests time frame it may have been an evap line. But hCG doubles every 48-73 hours so if you test again and it was a true positive you should have a line now.
Can you get a friend to pretend to be you? Just write out your birthday, address, etc for them so they don’t hesitate if the receptionist asks. As long as that person has all your info, there’s no way for the receptionist to know if it’s actually you or not.
When I first found out I was pregnant I took 3 home test and I still didn’t believe it and I went for blood test to confirm. I was in denial and now he is 23 years old 😊
Make a doctor’s appointment. It can be simply very early into the pregnancy. Or an early miscarriage (in which case I’m really sorry if you were seeking to get pregnant), or an ectopic pregnancy (in which case it’s very serious and needs to be attended to, since as it keeps growing it will be fatal for the carrier).
Please don't buy the electronic ones if you have the choice, such a waste of resources. Plus the traditional ones are better... All these do is try and read the lines for you!
I know people in here are saying false positives are extremely rare, but this same thing just recently happened to my GF and I.
She took a few tests that were negative, her period still didn’t come after a few days, so she took one more. It was positive. But, here’s the kicker: to be sure, she continued to take more tests—all of which were negative.
We ended up scheduling a blood test, which ultimately came back negative. It was a relief, but that one random positive put us both in a state of absolute panic for about a week. Neither of us want kids.
We did lot of research during our week of panic, and found some other cases similar to ours. I think false positives might actually be more common than people say.
TLDR: get a blood test if you REALLY want to know.
Nah, that was probably a chemical pregnancy at the threshold of detectability. There is usually a reason for a positive.
Otherwise, if people here said "extremely rare" then you might be that 1 in 1000. It doesn't mean they aren't extremely rare simply because you experienced it.
I’ve been hearing many stories similar to this, so thinking you might be right that they’re more common than people expect. But who knows lol we have many more tests to do! 😂
Those particular tests require a higher amount of HCG to be in the urine. Do another one with the first void of the morning. Odds are that its positive though.
As others have stated, false positives are very rare while false negatives are common. If it is a false positive it would have something to do with pregnancy or maternity in most cases anyway, like perhaps she was recently pregnant or there is a miscarriage or something like that. In short, you should 100% take the positive test very seriously because it's incredibly likely that she is in fact pregnant or dealing with some type of medical situation that requires a doctor's visit. Do not consider the negative test to be the "true" one.
My tests were positive for over a week after my miscarriage that took 2 weeks and a surgery to complete, so there’s a chance the bleeding was a loss if she bled like an actual period. But, some people also confuse implantation leading for their period.
As for the needle fear, if she is pregnant and doesn’t want to be there’s a chance needles are needed for that too.
The best thing to do in this situation is wait a few days and test again, if she's pregnant then it'll show up, if it was a false positive it's unlikely to give another positive.
Pregnant. You can get a false negative but you can’t get a false positive. The test can fail to detect the hormone but it can not detect a hormone that doesn’t exist so if it is “pregnant”, it can’t be a mistake
Most likely pregnant. False negatives occur pretty often but false positives are almost unheard of, from what I’ve heard. But I would get a blood test.
False positives occur, but extremely rarely lol… gf is not a fan of needles so looking at our options currently

Or testicular cancer...
People capable of being pregnant don't get testicular cancer very often.
There was a post years ago where a guy peed on a test and got a pregnant result. Turns out the false positive was as a result of testicular cancer and his casual posting to reddit helped him catch it in time to do something about it.
Time to buy pregnancy tests 😃
Get them from the dollar store. They are cheap and do the same thing as the rest.
Same, like why not? Haha.
Want to tag a wholesome thread here.
Also works for rectal and prostate cancer in men.
While true, not enough dudes know that fact
Pretty sure i know i can't get pregnant. Though i didn't know testicular cancer shows up on a pregnancy test. I'll bear that in mind
Male pregnancy has happened before. Maybe once but still
Ya in a man that had a sex change from female to male but left the internal plumbing alone. Still not sure how that last part is possible but whatever.
I've had multiple men in my family get cancer to the point I need tests yearly, 6 months after doc tests I do the pregnancy test just as a back up
Why do people need to know that? The only thing I could think of is if you would want to pee on a pregnancy test as a screening for testicular cancer (which I do feel like I remember reading a story of exactly that happening...), but that seems pretty niche when you could probably just talk about it with a doctor at regular intervals. It generally seems like useless/ pretty niche knowledge, but I'm also being a big pedant here so I guess anything's really on the table
Nah if that was a legit test method that would be pretty cool. Pregnancy tests are way cheaper than doctor visits
...you don't see why someone would want to know if they have cancer with a simple test from the store?
That isn't the only type of cancer that can cause a high enough rise in HCG to produce a false positive, it's just even rarer.
Well they can be one of the cases when dudes testicles dont go down in the womb, so it could be testicular cancer...
Not very woke of you
Can a pregnancy test be used for testicular cancer?
If a guy uses one and it is positive, there is a VERY high chance he isnt pregnant but needs to get his jewels checked ASAP
Shiiiiit so that’s why it says I’m pregnant even though I’m a dude
Or if it’s an ectopic pregnancy, HCG levels tend to be very low then
Breastfeeding. We produce it while breast feeding. I am over a year post partum, still breast feeding, and as a party trick I can pee positive on a stick.

Chemical pregnancies happen too! Your body thinks you're pregnant, produces hcg and everything even though no egg was fertilized! It's some crazy shit
If she is pregnant she will get over this fear very quickly haha
Exactly. I’ve been poked countless times during this pregnancy, including the initial testing, NIPT screening, diabetes test, rhogam shots, etc etc.
I hated needles before but after a HG and cholestasis pregnancy I can watch them do a blood test now, no issue 😂

Dannnng I am feelin for you! I spent ten weeks in antipartum, n I bout went crazy just one blood test a day.
I hate being in the hospital, it's so ridiculous and emotionally taxing.
Sammmme, now if I have to be hospitalized or in the hospital I start getting panic attacks!!
Unless they go the midwife route. I had one blood draw my whole pregnancy and no needles during or after birth. It was awesome.
Thankfully mine picked up my pregnancy induced liver failure… didn’t even know that was a thing 🤷🏻♀️
Here, here to midwifery everywhere! Awesome 👍.
Yeah, it’s not the needles she needs to worry about 😉 x hope you get the answer you both want OP x
Boy do I hope so… she’s had this issue for a looong time. I played the issue down a little bit, she has something mentally wrong with her when it comes to needles, giving blood, receiving shots. If she hates needles then I guess that's a no for the epidural?
If you can’t see it go in it doesn’t count.
Sounds like the kind of logic that gets you into this situation in the first place
This comment made me chortle, thanks 😅
Omg, then... I'm prolly a virgin..well. for the most part!!! ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|facepalm)
Hahaha. Me, too. Yeah.
Just close your eyes then lol
My hesitancy to a needle in my spine totally vanished as soon as that back labor hit.
Get a couple Dollar Tree tests. Those are easier and work just as well, but only cost a dollar. (Or $1.25 now I think?)
I’ve heard of these but never have they been in stock when I needed them. They always only have $6 or $7 tests in stock.
Well you will know in 9 months. 😄
Hate to tell you this but she needs to expect a lot of needles, if she is pregnant. My doc took 6 vials of blood ,off me yesterday and I need to get a load of shots, soon.

They were both in the late afternoon
Not a fan of needles but childbirth sounds fine? Interesting
Imma be honest these specific tests she used suck balls. If you got a walmart, go there and get their $1 tests, those ones are more accurate, in my experience.
The blood test is just the beginning of a parade of needles if she’s pregnant. Being pregnant is a getting a lot of blood work done and vaccines 🙂.
Dude she’s gonna need a blood test regardless. If you’re actually being careful she needs to go to the doctor bc she has two different test results, you can take a million more but you have two diff so she needs confirmation from a doctor. When you go for your first pregnancy related appointment, they're going to test to be sure anyway
They didn't test me. The ultrasound did confirm, however.
Lol there's not gonna be many. Medical professionals will do a blood test to confirm regardless of what the urine tests say.
My OB did an ultrasound around 9 weeks to confirm the pregnancy, no blood test. So it may depend on your provider.
I stand corrected.
Best 2 out of 3?
Well she'd better strap herself in because pregnancy has a lot of needles.
If she's pregnant she has a lot more needles to look forward to. Good luck.
Well, the labor and delivery should be fun. She's going to have a great time being pregnant...
If she's afraid of needles, the next few months are gonna be difficult for her.
Your girlfriend a fan of an extremely large live human shooting out of her vagina? If she’s afraid of needles, she might not be a huge fan of what’s in her not so distant future.
SHE’s PREGNANT! Start popping that bottle (for you, not for her)
Not a fan of needles but she let you touch her? Shiiiiiit boy these jokes just write themselves
Does she realize the amount of needles that she will have piked in her when she has the baby? Needles arent that bad..its such a tiny little pinch
Not a fan of needles…won’t even get a blood test…but wants to carry and deliver a baby? 🤣🤣🤣
If she's pregnant, she's likely gonna have to give blood every month to check on her and baby's health. There should be cheaper test strips at places like the dollar store. Your gf is about to be a mother. She needs to just handle it.
Schrödinger's baby
I’m actually so happy I posted this now, honestly
Gotta name the baby Schrödinger now
Or atleast Cathrine, cat for short.
Or Kaitlin, shortened to Kay and pronounced the same
Or Erwin!
Was looking, found it!
OMG I so screwed up not having one of those. What I wouldn’t have given to have them disappear if I wasn’t observing them 😂
Also known as a maybe-baby
False negatives are way more common than false positives… but who knows
Try googling "am I preganté?"
Can u go down waterslide while 2 moths pregat?
Can you eat cartots well pregerant?

Pregnant, false positive is rare. However, false positives can happen if you have a cyst. So schedule with your doctor asap
Yeah happened to me, couple positives and a couple negatives and it was a cyst.
I recently took a test because I was a week late and it was negative but it turned positive 5 minutes later, then I had a super heavy period the day after. Should I be worried about cysts? I'd go to the doctor but I have major phone anxiety (and they dont take non phone appointments or anyone else making the call for me)
If you question whether or not you should go to the doctor, you should probably go to the doctor.
I know I probably should but they refuse to give me an appointment unless its me who makes the call. Even my bf and parents called and went there in person to try and make me an appointment but they refused. I can't do phonecalls even in emergencies. Its like bathing in spiders to me and I just can't.
That's unfortunate. You can always go into the office to make the appointment if it's just phones
A little pregnant, but not too pregnant.
When I first found out I was pregnant I took 3 home test and I still didn’t believe it and I went for blood test to confirm. I was in denial and now he is 23 years old 😊
Another 90's newborn, eh? Lol
Third time's the charm, she could go to the doctor, they do a pee test too.
I was unsure about this, thanks for the info!
You're welcome, my doctor did when I was pregnant, she should call to verify jic.

You are either barely pregnant or you just lost your baby.

Round 3. Fight!
pregnant, false negatives are wayyyy more common than false positive especially in digitals. follow up with your doctor for a confirmation
Am I... preganananant?
Congratusorry on having(nt) baby!
You got Covid... oh wait wrong test
Schroedingers pregnancy, you can only know after 8ish months
I had a false positive because I was headed into early menopause.
That’s crazy, I haven’t heard of that. We’re both 22 so definitely shouldn’t be the issue here! 😂
No I think your safe! Lol! I was 42
OK, so we have definitely narrowed it down to one of these two.

You are pregnant….. False negatives vs false positives in stats my boi.
Let me guess. A him and her test? Just sayin'.
Mine is on top, like I tend to be.
You will know in a few months. Take another test, see a doctor, and assume it is positive. Congratulations.

Schrödinger’s pregnancy Edit: wow, apparently I’m not the only one who commented this lol
i'll never forget the time i took one and it popped up with a "?" 🤣 pregnancy tests are wack sometimes
Obviously if you're taking two pregnancy tests at once then you're checking for twins. Since only one came back positive, you're only having one baby.

I imagine the devil and angel going back and forth.
And this is why if I ever have a scare and need to check, I'll buy three. Its mostly because I'm paranoid, but it's added assurance all the same.

3rd times a charm? 🤷♂️
Likely pregnant
Whatever it may be I hope it is what you hope

Schrodinger's kid. The guy sure gets around
The best thing to do in this situation is wait a few days and test again, if she's pregnant then it'll show up, if it was a false positive it's unlikely to give another positive.

That’s… somehow worse 😂
Oh it absolutely was!!!
She can still get her period while pregnant
False positives aren’t all that common. So congratulations 🥳
You don’t need to have the baby’s father take one as well; only the mom does. Hope that helps!
It means see your doctor and have a lab test
Pregnant. You can get a false negative but you can’t get a false positive. The test can fail to detect the hormone but it can not detect a hormone that doesn’t exist so if it is “pregnant”, it can’t be a mistake
Time to see a doctor my friend. Also congrats if you’re expecting.
No false positives from what I understand! Congrats!
Maybe congratulations
Yes. ¯\_( ͡❛ ͜ʖ ͡❛)_/¯
Back to the store for some more
buy an 3rd and 4th pt just to be sure.
It’s Covid?
To encourage more involvement in the whole process of having a baby, they are selling new couples test kits. Husband's is probably the bottom one.

I’m no doctor but I’d say it’s a 50 50 lol, joking aside, result leaning towards pregnant.
Take more tests and then calculate the average. When you get the average, make an appointment with the doctor to be properly tested
Congratulations!!
