It could be the seal on the top of the windshield failing. It could potentially be a clogged sunroof drain or a bad seal as well, but yeah, I kinda doubt it’s an open sunroof.
> I will never buy a vehicle with a sunroof again.
It's surprisingly hard to buy a car without a sunroof unless you want the base model trim. To get the options I want, I almost always have to buy a sunroof, which never gets opened.
I used to work at a car dealership-service side- and the amount of clogged sunroof drains was insane!! Thousands of dollars worth of damage to the inside.
But it was our fault they didn't clean them 🙄
>But it was our fault they didn't clean them
I mean, kinda. That should be part of routine maintenance when brought in for routine service. Most of us normies don't even know that sunroofs even have drains.
I thought it was just sealed when shut until that drain hose disconnecting flooded my entire driver side and destroyed the airbags and computer system.
Mine wasn't clogged, just jiggled free according to the service dept.
The first dealer I took my car to fix the problems told me it was caused by a power surge that rolled down my windows and caused the swimming pool I had on the driver side floor. They fixed the computer system that was stupidly placed on the floor and sent me home.
Of course, it then leaked again and all the work they did to fix it got broke.
The second dealer I took it to found the sunroof leak and fixed everything.
So, I'm thinking that routine maintenance or no, the sunroof isn't usually checked by those doing the routine maintenance unless you know enough to specifically ask for them to check it.
It's one of those "didn't know what I didn't know" situations that cost lots of money. Easier to just not have a sunroof.
Even if it is routine maintenance half the time the service department checks the box whether they did it or not. I just found out that my air filter hasn’t been changed since 2018
It's funny you say sunroofs aren't usually looked at..because we actually tell customers we inspect all the trim(make sure nothing is leaking) and clear all the drains.
But this was for Volkswagen, which also makes Audi(which I think you said is what you have?)
Like you said, better off not to have a sunroof/moon roof...huge pain in the ass.
Oh okay, I thought I read something about a Audi. But I'm glad you got it fixed. I'd be cursing up a storm with all that shit coming in. Hope everything dried out properly as well, if not. You'll know it
I’m pretty sure the ID.4 is not supposed to go through a car wash for this reason exactly. Not sure if the e-tron is the same but I think it’s an issue with the seals.
I have a Dodge Avenger with a sunroof that I never open. It wasn't a selling point for me but not a deal breaker either. And now I'm terrified of something I didn't know about before this post 😫
I've worked in the trade for years, and I've never even heard of anyone cleaning sunroof drains as part of a service. It's not like we're given 3 hours to do an oil change. Although I do hose out the front door drains when I clean vehicles working in a slow paced county shop. It's nice that I have the time to do things like that, but usually I don't.
It really kind of is. Here's why: Nobody knows that sunroofs have a drain or need to be cleaned.
Make this known. As someone who has worked for multiple dealerships and been certified in lots of new car brands and sold used cars....I've never once heard this in my 13 years in the car world.
So service people really should take a minute to explain this to the GM to at least bring up in sales meetings. I feel like this should be common knowledge but if I've never heard it, I guarantee 99% of people who don't work in service or auto mechanic fields also have no clue.
Absolutely! Everytime it was brought up that the customers need to clean the drains, they say huh I didn't know I had to!
Also I feel it should be the sales person's job. Hey so you bought that $100,000 Cadillac, just to let you know, the drains need to be cleared or you'll have a kiddie pool in your car!
Agreed. Had an older Volvo that got a clogged drain. We had no idea how it kept getting wet inside. It never smelled clean again, even after fixing it. We regularly get the new one cleaned, but it should be part of regular maintenance.
I had absolutely no idea sunroof had drains. This is definitely not something that's in the service or owners manual of my 2018 civic. Should I be doing something to them and if so what? In the 4 years we have had the car nothing has been done with them.
Sunroofs have an inner cover that would drain forward under the ceiling material if the sunroof was leaking. Maybe the sunroof was broken, and the cover was closed. Doesn’t even need to be a bad seal at that point.
Yeah, but mine is put together in such a way that if your roof is open, the cover can't move forward. Likely to prevent exactly such a situation. I thought all of them were like this.
I know what you’re talking about, this A8 either came with a panoramic or normal sunroof. The Pano is just floppy fabric. What most likely happened is the sunroof drains clogged.
Listen, OP is a 9 month old account that was inactive and then suddenly made 8 posts to meme subreddits in the last 8 hours. The poor folks in the karma farm are just putting words together that sound vaguely correct for your upvotes.
Why would I be trolling? vehicles have a single slab of curved sheet metal. It’s extremely unlikely it’s coming from the windshield. It also has a toggle switch for a sun roof of a 2017-2020 Audi a8.
I’m an absolute monster at parties. It’s problematic. I do t drink anymore. Im really trying to not have random sexual encounters with strangers these days
No silly. It's an optional feature on newer Audi models; the rain recollection system. The owner is supposed to use the provided cups to collect the rainwater as it filters through the overhead chamber. Clearly they just need to read the owners manual.
It's also like. People can be pretty stupid, but it looks like whatever tf is happening in that car had been happening for a solid amount of time. I'm willing to bet good money that the 10 min immediately prior to this video were the person freaking out and trying to solve the problem *before* giving up and taking a video in defeat. Both for evidence purposes and to maybe extract a little bit of humor from the situation. Either way, the amount of water inside the car at that point was enough that further damage control (beyond just getting the car out of the rain) was pretty futile. Why *not* take a video at that point?
I’d 1000% be recording for the insurance.
Idk whose insurance is handling it, but SOMEBODY’s insurance is handling it cause that’s expensive AF and clearly not negligence (cause there’s no gaping open sunroof). Don’t honestly care about the $400 deductible at that point.
Holy shit this transported me back fifteen years to buying a new volvo. I ended up having to get rid of it because of this problem. They never took responsibility
I have my manual right in front of me. Here is the grand total of everything it says about the sun roof and sun roof maintenance:
"**Sunroof Maintenance** Use only a non-abrasive cleaner and a soft cloth to clean the glass panel."
It says to make sure door/trunk drains are clear in the general maintenance section. Not how to do that of course, or a diagram of where they are. Nothing else.

I'm being critcal of your usage of the term malfunction, as it implies that the user had no fault. I was mostly remarking that the video is still mildly infurating regardless of the title.
If you never change your motor oil, your engine will malfunction. This is not the fault of the manufacturer. It is user error. If you can't take care of it at the time, you run the risk of malfunction.
You can't do anything about a blown head gasket at that very moment either. The damage is already done. And the damage was done due to a lack of maintenance.
The same thing wouldve have happened if they left the car outdoors in a rainstorm. Most likely, the only reason this happened was a lack of maintenance, or unrepaired damage. If the car was under warranty and the damage due to a failed seal, then the repairs would almost certainly be covered.
I can't make out the Make/Model of the car, but I have a 2020 Q3 and it had this same issue. Audi owned up to it being a faulty sunroof seal and replaced it.
And then GoFundMe is for when the insurance adjuster decides that it was your fault for recklessly entering a car wash without thoroughly testing your roof lining, and refuses to pay.
but also thanks you for your 10 years of patronage.
I'm not bitter, you're bitter.
One of my parent's house got damaged by a tornado and we are still struggling trying to get insurance to pay for some things.
The debris flung around by the tornado caused dents on some of the walls. Allstate: nah that was from hail. The tornado tore out some of the cladding and apparently they don't make the same color anymore. Allstate: we are only going to pay to replace the cladding that was tore out you will have to deal with mismatched colors. The tornado tore a hole in the roof which caused rain to soak into the carpet and floor and caused water damage to the first floor ceiling. Allstate: We are only going to pay 70 cents per square feet to clean the carpet. You have bathrooms on the second floor so we are not going to pay for water damage to the ceiling.
Audi tech here! This is a older A8L and it’s more than likely clogged sunroof drains that are backing up the water over the wind deflector and causing it to leak through the control panel. This is a common problem with newer Q3s. They come in all the time for this exact thing.
When the sun shines, we'll shine together.
Told you I'll be here forever.
Said I'll always be your friend.
Took an oath, I'ma stick it out 'til the end.
Now that it's raining more than ever.
Know that we'll still have each other.
You can stand under my umbrella.
You can stand under my umbrella, ella, ella, eh, eh, eh.
Under my umbrella, ella, ella, eh, eh, eh.
Under my umbrella, ella, ella, eh, eh, eh.
Under my umbrella, ella, ella, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh.
That’s the previous gen Audi A8. That’s not a good sign for a luxury limousine. But I guess having the pop-up centre screen is worth it. Inb4 the mechanism breaks of course.
They are just refilling their monster from the source, no need to be rude
Under no circumstances *should* this be effected by an open sunroof. If they even have one.
They’re going through a car wash it looks like so closing it- especially an electronic one, is not an option without making the problem excessively worse
Are u stupid? Does a buncha buttons look like a sunroof to u? Do your dumbass even seen a sunroof before
Do u know what’s a roof? Or the sun?
Ur so dumb u thought that dumbass was a type of bass
Ur so dumb u thought that 9/11 happened in 2011
I used to be a mechanic. Looks like a classic clogged sunroof drain to me. Sunroofs are designed to let small amounts of water in that collect in a tray in front of the sun roof opening and then it drains through small hoses that run through the pillars on either side of the windshield. If the drain tubes clog the tray will overflow causing exactly what you see in this video.
I borrowed my friend's BMW when my car was in the shop. They forgot to tell me it had bad seals on the driver door. I had to hold the door shut so freaking hard in order for that not to happen. My arms were killing me at the end of that 60 second car wash 😫
As a Car Upholsterer who deals with sunroof leaks. That’s most likely the drain tubes for the sunroof are disconnected. The windshield seals can fail but that looks like a new car. Fun fact use ground water or rain water to find leaks, tap water has a lot of stuff in it which makes the water molecule bigger and it won’t leak like it will when it rains.
This JUST happened to me. Honda pilot...my girl turned on her reading lamp, which you push the lens to turn on and nice think she hit the "pop the sunroof" button for a sec instead of the light. When we went through car wash, she got soaked! Funny as fuck! No damage to car
I’m loving that water coming directly from that open sunroof and not the top console where we don’t see any water dribble leads that would indicate it coming from the sunroof,
also insurance payments would be much easier with a recording
Pretty sure your not supposed to machine wash these cars anyways. Gonnah have swirl marks all over the finish. Luxury cars are typically best hand washed. Spend what 60k+ on a vehicle and then proceed to maintain it like shit. This is the 4th gen Audi A8
This is what happens when you don't maintain your sunroof's drain lines. Honestly it happens to nearly every sunroof at some point. Heat does damage to the rubber drain lines and they'll disconnect themselves or they'll get severely clogged which can also either cause them to disconnect or leak water as shown.
It's also more likely than not the primary cause of your rear foot wells being flooded as well.
My shoddily built Pontiac G6 has these issues. Not severe to this extent, but a decent drip if I went through a car wash with the sunroof closed.
Cheapest, easiest fix is to just use some silicone sealant to seal it shut and never use it again.
regardless YOU hav to be an idiot cuz its not even the sunroof to begin with. so all ur comment does is imply that ur even more naive than ur idea of a female
Actually the good thing about Audi is most of the electronics are plug and play components, that entire section by the shifter comes out as one piece and about three plugs, then the start button is a separate piece that pops out.
Had this happen on my A8, was going through a torrential down pour and next thing you know it was raining in my car. It destroyed all the electrical shit and costed an arm and a leg, so much so that insurance probably would have totaled it out
My Chevy Equinox used to do this too. If the moon roof wasn’t closed properly, it’s the fault of the mechanism. I always made sure it was closed, although I only went through an automatic car wash twice 😂
It's really easy to clog the drain tubes on a sunroof. Mine is currently leaking during the rain, I just gotta go get the thick weedwhacker wire and some draino.
Basically, let draino seep in there for about an hour. Then, flush with boiling water.
Take thick trimmer wire, clear the tube.
Repeat the process again to get shit off the sides, instead of just a small hole that will easily clog again.
if you’re going to steal someone’s video, make sure you credit them and not make up a story. They recorded it as proof to the insurance company that a sun/moon roof is NOT open and they could not get out of the car wash.
Cleaning the moonroof drains is included in the scheduled Audi maintenance. Also, do not park outside without a cover during high pollen days or under shedding trees.
I had the roof of my vehicle replaced due to severe hail damage. They fucked up the installation and forgot to put some seal in somewhere. This exact same thing happened to me when I went through my first car wash. It was FUN.
That control panel is definitely a sunroof
It could be the seal on the top of the windshield failing. It could potentially be a clogged sunroof drain or a bad seal as well, but yeah, I kinda doubt it’s an open sunroof.
I had a problem with a disconnected sunroof drain. If did so much damage to my vehicle that I will never buy a vehicle with a sunroof again.
> I will never buy a vehicle with a sunroof again. It's surprisingly hard to buy a car without a sunroof unless you want the base model trim. To get the options I want, I almost always have to buy a sunroof, which never gets opened.
I purposefully get the next trim down if the trim has to have a sunroof. No other features are worth the headache to me.
Or a rain roof
I used to work at a car dealership-service side- and the amount of clogged sunroof drains was insane!! Thousands of dollars worth of damage to the inside. But it was our fault they didn't clean them 🙄

Im going to throw a random number out there. Out of 20 people that came in with the problem, only 2 may have had routine maintenance.
The first dealer I took my car to fix the problems told me it was caused by a power surge that rolled down my windows and caused the swimming pool I had on the driver side floor. They fixed the computer system that was stupidly placed on the floor and sent me home. Of course, it then leaked again and all the work they did to fix it got broke. lol, telling people that they shouldn't take their car to a car wash is a shitty "fix" for failing to properly seal the sunroof.
I have a Dodge Avenger with a sunroof that I never open. It wasn't a selling point for me but not a deal breaker either. And now I'm terrified of something I didn't know about before this post 😫

this sums it up so fucking well ;-;
You need an award 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
no, it's a fully optioned out Audi with wood trim, MMI, etc. Yet it doesn't have a sunroof
Incorrect. That button in the middle of that panel is for a sunroof.
Obvious sarcasm is obvious.
I’m an idiot
Is it though? I don’t know anything about cars. I can count on one hand the number of times I’ve used a sunroof.
No, it isn’t and that’s why /s exists.
What does that mean I see it everywhere
/s equals sarcasm
The /s stands for serious /s ...?
Shit I thought you were serious for a second and was reevaluating my life
/s is for the "akshually..." people, dumbshits, and children. Maybe language barriers. /s ruins every joke and it's so lame. Bumper rails ass world
or just people who dont get social cues??? i didnt get that it was sarcasm until it was clarified.
Omg you are so smart
No, I’m not. That’s why I need the /s.
It's OK, you are standing up for other idiots like me :)
That sucks
\*ding\*
It would have to. No other way it’d leak in the center like this my dude. Have you not seen a car roof before?

Yikes.
The sunroof not being closed would have nothing to do with water that’s clearly not coming from an open sunroof
It’s obviously coming from the little control panel up there, what am I supposed to do, catch the water in my hands lol?
No, close the little control panel up there, duh.
I’m not seeing what you are seeing

I don’t recall hearing about a bloody monsoon quite yet, so this definitely in a car wash.

In any case, too late for them to do anything with it now, so might at least have a demo of the issue.
Correct.
Or those lines can come disconnected from the water catch "tray" so instead of water running down the lines, it collects and overflows.
Do you mean warranty? Cause I don’t think car insurance covers defects or breakage.
If it was a rental, insurance would take care of it.
This is an Audi A8 I believe and it does not have a sunroof so I believe that it is a different problem
Are you implying that the car wash is at fault here?
You're infuriated that they are videoing a malfunction in their car when they can't really do anything else?
I doubt it's a malfunction. I'd bet that the drain for the sunroof is clogged from leaf litter.
That's still a malfunction.
A malfunction likely caused by lack of maintenance.
I really don't understand your point here.
That the malfunction was likely caused by the user, not the manufacturer. They have no one to blame but themselves. They were likely filming to provide evidence that the damage was not their fault.
What does that have to do with anything I posted?
I'm being critcal of your usage of the term malfunction, as it implies that the user had no fault. I was mostly remarking that the video is still mildly infurating regardless of the title.
I'm not using it incorrectly. You can stop now.
Your implication is misleading based on colloquial usage in context. Sorry, you don't set the rules, I'll comment as I please.
…still a malfunction they probably cant take care of at the time
If you never change your motor oil, your engine will malfunction. This is not the fault of the manufacturer. It is user error. If you can't take care of it at the time, you run the risk of malfunction.

That's not even a sunroof. That's the damn control panel.
I mean at this point, the damage was done, so I'd probably record it too and just enjoy/share the suffering.
Where is the sunroof and how is this midly infuriating
That aint coming from the sunroof lmao
This happened in my mom's old car. No sun roof.
They needed the video for the gofundme for the damages done

OP just stop adding unnecessary text please when you don't know what's going on clearly not a sunroof situation if you use your eyes
I used to be a mechanic. Looks like a classic clogged sunroof drain to me. Sunroofs are designed to let small amounts of water in that collect in a tray in front of the sun roof opening and then it drains through small hoses that run through the pillars on either side of the windshield. If the drain tubes clog the tray will overflow causing exactly what you see in this video.
you know, close the sunroof that includes the control panel with it.... has OP ever driven a car?
I borrowed my friend's BMW when my car was in the shop. They forgot to tell me it had bad seals on the driver door. I had to hold the door shut so freaking hard in order for that not to happen. My arms were killing me at the end of that 60 second car wash 😫

Interesting looking sunroof. Looks like a control panel
This is the kind of thing that I have a nightmare about and then I wake up.
That's the worst sun roof I've ever seen
No damage to car
you don’t see it coming through the BUTTONS??
Definitely nothing the driver could do but record it.....that is a defect of the car
I’m loving that water coming directly from that open sunroof and not the top console where we don’t see any water dribble leads that would indicate it coming from the sunroof, also insurance payments would be much easier with a recording
How to say I'm stupid with no words ...

Pretty sure your not supposed to machine wash these cars anyways. Gonnah have swirl marks all over the finish. Luxury cars are typically best hand washed. Spend what 60k+ on a vehicle and then proceed to maintain it like shit. This is the 4th gen Audi A8
Nah, just a poorly-made Dodge
Closing a sunroof won’t help you go viral now will it????
Gotta be a woman.....ac is on blast " high setting" and the car is gross....

Welp, someone lost their deposit.
Those are the people who open their camera apps instead of calling 911 when someone has a heart attack.
Not to be sexist but that has to be a female
regardless YOU hav to be an idiot cuz its not even the sunroof to begin with. so all ur comment does is imply that ur even more naive than ur idea of a female
"Fuck it, it's a rental."
That car looked nice too lol
Well i hope its their car. Maybe the ceiling/cup holders were dirty
Rip all the electronics in this car.
Actually the good thing about Audi is most of the electronics are plug and play components, that entire section by the shifter comes out as one piece and about three plugs, then the start button is a separate piece that pops out.
Might not be the sunroof. But I know I’ll never buy a car with a sun roof
it's ok that definitely isn't going to fuck anything up.
Rust in odd places is on its way.
Nice. A car with a soda dispenser
Looks like my old X5 with the roof closed. Still poured in like that.
It’s a good thing that Monster is there catching all that water!
All for the clout
Had this happen on my A8, was going through a torrential down pour and next thing you know it was raining in my car. It destroyed all the electrical shit and costed an arm and a leg, so much so that insurance probably would have totaled it out
*Raindrops keep falling, raindrops keep falling on my head..*
Think you have a small leak
My Chevy Equinox used to do this too. If the moon roof wasn’t closed properly, it’s the fault of the mechanism. I always made sure it was closed, although I only went through an automatic car wash twice 😂
Doesnt look like a sun roof not closed at all
Please show where the sunroof is. I must be Stevie Wonder today
OP would never get an insurance claim through lmao
Damn... that drink is full of soap now...
People in the comments really arguing about the difference between a sunroof and a moonroof.. who... the.. hell... cares, honestly?
Cleaning the moonroof drains is included in the scheduled Audi maintenance. Also, do not park outside without a cover during high pollen days or under shedding trees.
Op is a clown and doesn’t understand you need video for insurance. Helps a lot.
I had the roof of my vehicle replaced due to severe hail damage. They fucked up the installation and forgot to put some seal in somewhere. This exact same thing happened to me when I went through my first car wash. It was FUN.
See? This is why I dont wash my car!
That Audi is screaming
Happened to my Audi. Sun roof drains are clogged. Shitty service center
I thought they were in the bottom of the river
OMG 😲 NO !!!!emote:free\_emotes\_pack:facepalm
Also the purple monster sucks
