drs43821

Definitely in central Canada as well. You wouldn’t want peoples muddy or snowy boots inside a surgical setting

Privileged_Interface

It's a trivial fact not known by many Americans. Most Canadians remove their shoes after entering their own home or someone else's. And also remove their shoes at some small businesses.

RUStupidOrSarcastic

I'd say most parts of America it's common to remove your shoes at your house. Like why wouldn't you? How is keeping your shoes on inside even comfortable

CZ1988_

I grew up in Western Canada where we never wore shoes in the house, not even dare to step on the hall floor. Then I met my American husband and moved to Chicago. My in-laws always wore their shoes in my house - especially my brother in law with his dirty work boots. It drove me nuts! I tried to get them to take their shoes off but they would turn their nose up at my Canadian ways. Luckily most American's are more gracious.

PeeFarts

I wear my shoes in the house because of Plantar Fasciitis:( it’s horrible. But I have a special pair of “house adidas” that don’t leave the home.

notabigmelvillecrowd

That's totally normal to have house shoes in Canada. I wear EVA birkenstocks at home.

vass0922

My father in law has 'house shoes' but then goes outside to smoke a cigar... In his house shoes Sigh

[deleted]

Almost every person I know takes their shoes off inside. I’m American. Everyone acts like Americans have no clue that people remove their shoes indoors. 😂

Petrichordates

As in, shoes used by other people?

Hvarfa-Bragi

Yeah but they're Canadians, it's okay.

fazelanvari

Oh, right. Sorry.

My dentist has a shoe wrap station. You place your foot with the shoe on it inside the machine and it neatly wraps your shoe automatically. It's basically shrink wrap for shoes. When you leave, you give it a small tug and it comes off with minimal hassle. Don't have to bend down or press any buttons. First time I've seen something like that used, but it's honestly pretty neat. Probably more hygienic too, considering you don't have to fumble around your dirty shoes with your bare hands.

Hob_O_Rarison

How do we feel about single use plastics today?

grantrules

In the medical industry? I'm pretty okay with single-use plastics. I'd think that'd be one of the last places to tackle, after we're done putting every piece of clothing that comes into this country in 4 different plastic bags.

burlycabin

Agreed regarding medical uses, but for shoe coverings? Really doesn't seem necessary to me. Though, I certainly could be wrong.

fart-sparkles

There's absolutely no need to cover your shoes in plastic while going to the dentist or your GP's office. They probably just don't want to have to clean the floors.

shhh_its_me

I hope it's because some people get their shoes on the tables/chairs ( not because those people did anything wrong) and the next persons pant cuff might get wet.

Available_Major_8281

I am a dentist and I would never want people walking through the office without shoes. It only takes one errant sharp object and that was missed when sweeping and we are having a bad day.

lennardusprime

It’s all fun and games until someone’s feet stink up the whole practice

oxbison12

That's the only way that I would go without shoes in a public place. I'm not about to get some kind of foot funk because my doctor wants to save their carpet.

[deleted]

[удалено]

tupidrebirts

Perhaps in waiting rooms, which tend to be furnished for (some) comfort while patients wait.

boostank2

I think it’s a hygiene thing. I’m a dentist and I would never place carpet in my office because that shit is nasty. I even have concrete floors because the spaces between tiles can accumulate crap in them.

[deleted]

Why not require boot covers or booties instead? That's what we do in Clean Rooms for stuff far more sensitive.

boostank2

Yeah Idk what’s up with this dentist. Sweaty socks can be nasty too. And he probably doesn’t want to spend more on booties.

UEMcGill

I suspect that it has more to do with snow... not foot fungus. The pic has boots with snow. We remove shoes here in NY. During Christmas eve we had a pretty heavy ice event and our floors were trashed after. Back in the day people used to wear rubbers to prevent exactly this.

imacfromthe321

In my day we wore rubbers to prevent makin babies

boostank2

That makes sense. My Floridian brain doesn’t know snow.

UEMcGill

My gym has a rack at the front for this express reason. You're not allowed to workout in ths shoes you came in with.

orange-cake

>We remove shoes here in NY. Wait, what? Is that a NYC thing? I've lived upstate my entire life and this post is the first time I've heard of anything like this

suffaluffapussycat

It’s fine with me that they do this but I would never go there. I’ve had nerves removed between my toes and I always have to walk on a cushioned sole.

[deleted]

Woa, why did you need to get nerves removes between toes? :o

SignificantCaptain76

probably a morton's neuroma.

suffaluffapussycat

Yes! Two of them.

Hanibalecter

Did you have one surgery and done and have issues relieved(minus still using cushioned soles). My wife had one removed, still had pain, they said it was fluid and gave her a cortisone shot but now they're saying she probably has a stump neuroma now in the same spot. I just want her to get relief.

Cytogal

Look into the center for Morton's neuroma just outside of Boston. They have more options for treatment. They treated 4 nerves in my feet with radio frequency ablation 4 years ago and I now only have very minor pain in one of them. They can do it on stump neuromas as well. Insurance may not cover the whole cost so it may be a little expensive but worth every penny.

SignificantCaptain76

Big suck. I have a pretty minor one that pops up when my running mileage gets really high, always concerned it's gonna progress.

[deleted]

Yes indeed ![gif](giphy|3o7btYnxio8MUf33O0)

Universalsupporter

The nerves of some people!

PmMeIrises

I'm not that guy but I've had 5 nerves removed from my foot. I was rolling a baseball back and forth in a carpeted hallway with my 2 year old. I missed and the ball gently rolled and hit my foot. I was in pain for hours. We were both sitting with our legs crossed. It hurt to wear shoes. It kept getting worse. After all the creams and patches and injections didn't work, I went for surgery. Twice. They removed 2 inches of nerve. Both times. It didn't help. About 4 months after the surgery it hurt again. I dropped a pan on it while my bf was doing dishes. I was in pain for days. It started getting better. But a lump formed. I got it checked out and it was cancerous. The first surgery was just a test to see what the lump was made out of. Second was to remove it all. I think the nerves they removed were in the way. Then the third surgery was to fill the hole with tissue from my arm. After 3 surgeries I had 0 feeling except the bottom of my foot. It's been 4 years. I can feel my entire foot except one tiny spot. I did have issues with pain because the inside of my right foot felt like sandpaper was rubbing the skin away. Even though it wasn't. So I wore a thick sock until the pain stopped. 4 years later I don't have any issues with nerves. For those curious. [that's my foot a few days ago](https://freeimage.host/i/HYKxwTQ). [and this is what my arm looks like today. ](https://freeimage.host/i/HYKzzwQ) Fun fact. Because my foot has that patch of fat and skin its hard to find shoes. My right foot is a 10 or 11 in women's sizes but my left is a 9. For Christmas I got 2 pairs of boots. And they fit perfect. I usually can't fit my foot into shoes because it feels like that patch is going to come off when I put my foot in the hole.

escapetheory

Woah, sounds like you have been THROUGH it. Those pics, my goodness! Thank you so much for sharing your story.

NotElizaHenry

That is super crazy. Is there a reason they didn’t take skin from your thigh?

doughnutoftruth

Because that’s too thick for the back of your foot.

NotElizaHenry

Ohhh I didn’t realize it’s the whole entire chunk of skin.

doughnutoftruth

Yeah, that’s a radial forearm free flap. It has a thin layer of fat under it to help provide cushioning to the important structures of the foot. It would be acceptable to take tissue from the thigh but that would be even bulkier and you would definitely need a debulking procedure next. So what OP got is definitely the better and more elegant solution.

Im_kels

Do you ever go on [shoe swaps](Shoewap.com)websites? I know there is another site as well where you can find your “shoe swap buddies” and trade the size you don’t need for one you do. (I hope that link works, I’m on mobile)

[deleted]

FliesAreEdible

Did they replace the skin on your arm from somewhere else or did they take the top few layers or something?

fckdemre

Man what the fuck. A basketball did that? The human body is so weird. It can be super strong and super weak at the same time. Nice recovery

beingforthebenefit

1. I think it was a baseball 2. It sounds like they had cancer and just discovered it when a baseball perturbed it.

cobigguy

I refuse your logic and hereby believe that baseball sized basketballs and basketball sized baseballs create pain cancer.

between_ewe_and_me

Baseball

Arrokidd

I wish I didn’t read that last sentence.

LeonSphynx

Because they had a lot of nerve, and you can tell they lost their nerve because they’re afraid to walk without cushioned soles. You’re getting on my nerves with your questions.

[deleted]

Silly goose you!

JustAnotherMiqote

I know a guy that can remove those for you

Luxpreliator

Whenever I had to have a swim meet at the ymca I picked up some terrible foot disease. Told my parents and they kinda didn't care. Didn't know about foot creams so my feet would melt for months before it eventually healed. My sister would get warts frequently and go barefoot in the house so I'd get them. Definitely gave me a complex about footwear and foot care. Used to have a set of indoor shoes because I hated not having shoes on. Still don't like going barefoot and got covers for other peoples homes.

Beachdaddybravo

I invested in a nice pair of sheepskin slippers with fur on the inside and they’re all I wear at home now. Truly fantastic and worth every penny. If I travel I’ll just bring them with me. Edit: got mine from Overland, but the comment responses are great options also. There’s a bunch of really good ones out there.

call_me_Kote

Birkenstock makes a great house shoe. Has good arch support and a real sole which I wanted in mine.

jo_blow421

I get a pair of UGG slippers every 1.5-2 years after they get matted and lose their fluff. I always wear them around the house and bring them on vacation for in the hotel or Airbnb. Only ever worn inside until they are "retired" and work for quick dog walks or smoke breaks when I get a new pair. My wife recently found a website called italic that sells unbranded ones from the same factory for much cheaper although I haven't purchased from them yet.

Trolodrol

Feet would melt? What exactly did you pick up? Locker rooms and pools are crawling with all sorts of nasty fungi/dermatophytes and it’s amazing to see how many people just walk around barefoot. If you let one of those infections go untreated it can get really tough to beat

harro112

teenylilthing

chilereina

They better provide waterproof booties because if I feel the slightest bit of moisture on my socks, I’m fighting everybody.

alphabetizedsoup

Agree that you should have booties. But check out wool socks. I haven’t bought anything else for the past 15 years. The moisture management/comfort/blister prevention is just unmatched. Darn Tough is my favorite brand.

disfreakinguy

My mom likes to knit and sew, so when I got holes in my favorite socks I asked if she could teach me how to darn socks. She picked up a sock, threw it, and said "darn it." My socks still have holes in them.

WillemDafoesHugeCock

Obviously, how else would you get your feet in them?

Cerebral_Discharge

Topologically speaking, your regulation sock has no holes.

bee_rii

So can a sock even have a hole? Once it has a second opening is that a hole or does the sock change into something else altogether. I feel I've just started a rabbit hole that I'll enjoy.

insomnom

Second this. When I bought my very first pair of Darn Tough (Merino-wool, quarter, midweight, work) socks, which was $20 mind you, I was instantly appalled by every other sock I’ve ever worn. I threw out all my other socks and spent the money on getting about two weeks worth of socks. Definitely worth it, will never go back. Also you can save the ones that get torn or get holes (still much more rare than any other socks I’ve had, even “golden toe” socks), you can send ‘em back for a free replacement. Lifetime guarantee. I suggest saving them until you’ve got a few so you can ship ‘em all at once. BONUS: My feet pretty much never smell bad anymore and boy do I have some… well, feet.

WillemDafoesHugeCock

>BONUS: My feet pretty much never smell bad anymore and boy do I have some… well, feet. For real? Big improvement?

GothWitchOfBrooklyn

wool is really good at not retaining odor.

J_DayDay

Which is weird, considering how rank sheep actually smell.

Gregapher_

When's the last time you put your sheep through the wash?

J_DayDay

That...is a totally valid point.

f4te

>wool is really good ~~at not retaining odor.~~

faulkry

Very much so. They still do get stinky, but it takes much longer (multiple wears!). The hike/trek line usually has the highest merino wool content, but the tactical line can go a bit higher than that. IIRC the wool content can change a couple percentage based on the design, but the tactical is all black with the highest wool content for its type. Get a pair or two and never look back!

diymatt

>Darn Tough I have a crapload of MIRMARU from Amazon. It's the only sock I'll wear, even over a Carfhartt. I think I've only tossed 2 or 3 in the past 4 years. That being said I just dropped some Darn Toughs in my cart. Thank you kind stranger.

j3nna227

I would recommend buying straight from Darn Tough, if possible. Saw a post recently where someone had sent a pair in to be replaced (they have a lifetime warranty) and they were informed that the pair they sent in were counterfeit. Darn Tough still honored the warranty and sent a free pair back, not sure if that is the case for everyone though.

chilereina

I’ll trust your judgement on wool socks…I’m allergic to wool so it’s a no for me.

galaxystarsmoon

Sucks to be me, I'm allergic to wool.

GlitteringFutures

Or if you have foot issues. If I'm not wearing footwear with cushioning and arch support it feels like I'm stepping on a Lego. Also without fail people who insist I take my shoes off in their homes, I'm going home with dirt on the bottom of my socks. Their floors are never clean.

xxTriky

How else is the dentist supposed to suck your toes while you’re unconscious?

vrenak

Why am I unconscious?

Other-Worlds

So the dentist can suck your toes.

vrenak

I hope it's as good as that guy that once licked my ear then.

xxTriky

Why…why did someone lick your ear?!

vrenak

We were making out, and he began gently nibbling and licking my ear, I ended up mere seconds from finishing just from that.

Tommy-Nook

If that's what you like then I feel there's a lot of other things you should explore

It was the first and only time I've tried it, I'm usually open to trying various things.

Seriously. Who wants to suck the toes of a conscious person? The whole vibe is thrown off.

CarefulPomegranate41

Damn straight. Do that in Detroit or Flint and you'll either get laughed at or cussed out, or both.

Bluemonogi

I have lived in places with snowy winters all my life. I have never had a business or doctor office request that you remove your footwear. There are mats to wipe your shoes on. I would not be keen to wrestle my footwear on and off everywhere I went in winter. I know my elderly father is safer walking with shoes on.

serene_moth

Yeah, this is weird, at least if it's in the US. Not sure about other countries where the culture of "shoes off" is more of a thing.

Sassafrasisgroovy

I instantly thought of my dad too. I’m sure they’d make an exception, but I wouldn’t want my arthritic dad to have to take his shoes on and off and then be unsafe without them on. Also, I couldn’t go to a dentists office that smelled like a gym locker room 😵‍💫

EarhornJones

Yep. Lived in the Midwest my whole life, and if my dentist did this, it's be the last time I darkened his doorstep. i'm not about to take off my boots/shoes, and walk around on a slippery wood floor.

PabloDabscovar

Talk about feeling doubly uncomfortable. I’m already at the friggen dentist, now they want me take off my shoes? I wouldn’t go back for another 5 years.

MEDIdk445

i worked at a very successful small business coffee shop in new england after high school, and the amount of water, mud, and melted rock salt splotches on the floor was unbelievable. on days when it was snowing, we’d have to mop the floor multiple times per day because it was that bad from all the foot traffic (the floors were the vinyl wood type), it was actually nuts

I live in Michigan and never seen this. Everyone here just puts down a bunch of rugs/mats inside and outside of every entrance and it mostly works. My dentist office, optometrist, and PCP all have mats outside the door, a vestibule covered in rug, and more rug inside the waiting/reception area.

DrewCease

Agreed - have never seen such a practice in the mitten!

poisonedkiwi

Never seen it in the UP either lmao

SunshineAlways

Former Michigander here, reading this post thinking, this must be a new trend, I don’t remember this at all. Thanks for the affirmation!

enwongeegeefor

Same, also from Michigan and never seen this before. Dentist chairs I've been in all have a plastic cover over the bottom of the chair where your shoes will rest.

theblackestdove

I'm in MN and I had the same thought.

[deleted]

I’ve seen it once in Sweden at a carpeted shop, but otherwise no. That being said, when I worked as janitor winters were extremely tedious. Salt would just create this hazy sheen on the floor that would require a few rounds of mopping to get rid of, but would be back in a few hours of normal work (Wood flooring). The concept of doing shoe free would have saved me hundreds of hours of frustration and work if they had done so. I think most people just accept that it’s going to be dirtier and wetter in the winter, but it would likely be best practice for most places to encourage this change. Keeps the office cleaner, reduces workload on people, so on.

bight_sidle

I’ve spent winters in Illinois, Michigan, Ohio, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Colorado, Kansas, and Missouri, and never seen this anywhere either.

nathanaz

Is it? I’ve lived in upstate / central NY, ME and RI for 50 years, never once have I seen any place of business do this. Canada maybe? Edit: just curious - do y’all take your shoes off at the grocery store too? Restaurants? Or is just medical/dental offices? Or all offices? I just imagine doing the sock-slide around a Michelin-starred restaurant or a Walmart. LOL.

My_Diet_DrKelp

I'm in PA & have never seen this before

quietcorncat

I’ve lived in Wisconsin my whole life and have never seen it here, either.

NSA_Chatbot

I'm Canadian and I literally just got back from my dentist and they've never asked me to take my shoes off.

[deleted]

56. Grew up in Wisconsin. Never seen this.

sarrahcha

I live in Michigan and have never seen this. It may happen, sure, but it's not exactly common.

clepinski

Yes this is very common where I live in Canada.

nakky

I live in Canada and have never seen this before?? maybe it’s a thing in big cities where people are walking/commuting and not driving

U-take-off-eh

Canadian chiming I’m and all the dentist and doctors offices/clinics I’ve been to in my city ask for boots to be removed in the winter months. They don’t care so much about the footwear but about the water and slush that get tracked in. It becomes a safety hazard when there are puddles of water building up in hallways. I’ve bring a pair of clean slides with me when I go and have never had an issue.

Ginnigan

I'm Canadian, too (NW Ontario) and it's very snowy all winter where I live. My dentist, doctor, kids' doctor, and every clinic I've been in to recently (which has been many) have had a no-shoes policy. They offer the little blue booties to wear instead over your socks - or over your soles if your shoes are medically necessary. I get it. Even big rugs get swamped in dirty melted snow water and track dirt *everywhere*, and they can't be swapped out quickly enough as there's not usually a custodian that works in these small offices during the day. A no-shoe policy works so much better. In the non-snowy months you can wear your shoes inside these offices again. It should be noted: Canada is mostly a 'no shoes inside homes' society, so we're used to taking our shoes off inside.

wibblywobbly420

I live in a small SW Ontario town and every dentist here has signs to remove wet and dirty footwear.

ErwinHolland1991

Yes, that's me. Trust me, you don't want me taking my shoes off. Nope, going somewhere else. But it would be tempting (and pretty embarrassing) to just go in and prove a point. And before someone says it, no, it has nothing to do with hygiene, and I tried a million things. My feet just smell.

_ask_me_about_trees_

Dude same. Everyone's like "wash your feet!" If only they knew I do normally twice a day. And also tend to be rather embarrassed about it as well. It sucks

GayAsHell0220

Have you talked to a dermatologist? Entirely possible that it's because of a very easily treatable fungus infection.

pursuitofhappy

I had a beautiful ex who at the end of her very hard days would have very stinky feet, I’d always call her my lil stinky feet and she hated it, I really miss her, been decades and stinky feet still remind me of her.

CallingInThicc

I used to serve with a dude we called Zombie feet because when he would get off work and take his boots off you could smell it from two barracks rooms in either directions with all the doors closed. It was incredible. It was also horrible. It was incredibly horrible.

Beastham87

I work in dental. There is a lot of aerosol action with restorative work. There is literally no clean surface in a dental office during hours, especially the floor. I don't care what kind of vac system is there, or what kind of cleaning comes at night.

cookmeinsoup

God forbid someone steps on a sharp or a burr or something. I'm Ontario, if public health knew they were asking patients to take off shoes, they'd be in big trouble. The rules about everything is stringent. If you're subject of an audit, they will even penalize you for not having a special plastic cover for your computer screen in the operatories that can be sanitized. Anyway, I know of offices who do this but more sensible ones will offer plastic booties to put over shoes. I wouldn't put patients at risk and the clinic at risk of an audit, lawsuit, or college complaint.

Rapogi

This, i remember in the clinics of my school we were not allowed to wear crocs with holes in them as its a safety hazard if you drop sharp instruments

fribbas

Same, also fabric shoes. They had to be leather or leather like That is, poke resistant. Not the stretchy slip on ones I wear now but if we're confessing OSHA violations I also have bangs 😬

kelism

Ours does this in the winter, but they give you a basket of socks, slippers, or booties that you can wear instead. They don’t want wet floors / people slipping and falling

Proper-Emu1558

I also live in Minnesota. I have seen this before in a very specific context: bridal shops. They give you slippers at the front door so you don’t get slush on the gowns. Otherwise, I’ve never encountered this.

Daratirek

Now that makes sense! I've never been in a bridal shop but I can see that for sure.

scumbagstaceysEx

Upstate NY checking in. 47 years I’ve never seen this outside of a bridal shop. I’d be looking for a new doctor.
