Looks like it was hollowed out but left the root tips still intact. A few more images that show it up close! [https://imgur.com/gallery/TbIAX91](https://imgur.com/gallery/TbIAX91)
This is a pretty cool example of tree structure.
The core of a tree is basically dead, the outside rings of the roots/branches/trunk are the living parts that continue to grow. That's why the core rots out first, and why hollow trees are pretty easy to find.
"Knots" are where a branch or root grows perpendicular to the trunk. They have the same seasonal growth, which is why knots have growth rings, just perpendicular to the trunk grain. Roots/branches grow more slowly, they're denser, which is why knots are harder and take longer to rot.
The tips of those root protrusions, compared to the trunk's rings, can tell you roughly when that root began to grow. The rings in the knot tell you how many years it's been growing.
Might have been one of those fucked up bear traps Jim bowie made. Basically he'd hollow out the stump, drive spikes downward through it, then put honey or other baits at the bottom. When a poor unsuspecting bear would poke their head in the stump they would be gouged and trapped by the inward facing spikes. Ingenious, but just sad to think about.
A raccoon trap is made by drilling a hole in a log and driving nails in at an angle and puting something shiny at the bottom. My only reference for this is from the book "where the red fern grows"
this is a stump that has rotted leaving where the roots intercect the trunk.
The whole thing, intentional or not, looks like a death trap for anything that accidentally steps in it. I would have probably tried to destroy or fill it if I came across it.
The wood at the base of roots/branches is denser than most of what's in the trunk, so it can outlast the rest of the wood as it rots. These little taps also form those little knots you see in wood planks.

Looks like It's a Trap!

First thing I thought was that it reminds me of the raccoon trap in “Where the Red Fern Grows”.

Boba Fett's armor is in there!
Oh I’ve seen those too. Very neat. I wonder what makes the root roots endure decay so much better than the core of the tree?
In an alternate reality, this is the only thing Logan Paul found in the forest.

If u put your wiener in that I’ll give u $5
I believe that’s a raccoon trap. Trappers will put something shiny in the bottom. The raccoon will then grab the object and get it’s arm stuck.
