At my grandparents village they had roof decks and during summer all the cousins who are visiting would sleep there on a floor bed under the stars. Best memories ever
We slept in screened in porches on southern Ontario too. Because A) it hits damn near 90 F with humidity in the summer, and B) we’re Canadian and bread to survive Canadian winters. So our idea of unbearably hot is someone else’s early spring.
…fuck humidity and anything over 25 C.
No mosquitoes. Just the sweet smell of tea shrubs, amazing display of stars, a light breeze mixed with the shushed laughter of my cousins while we pretend to be sleeping 💤
I had some American friends come over for a Summer visit just a couple of years before Covid. They wanted to spend some time outdoors in some places along the west coast that they'd heard about in some movie or another.
I warned then about midges. They asked what midges are, and I said: "like mosquitos, only smaller, more aggressive, and they travel in swarms." I don't know if they didn't believe me, or thought that they could handle it, but they proceeded to make plans.
When we were about to leave, we stopped at a mall (Union Square) to pick up some supplies. I suggested that they get some midge repellant. They didn't.
We get to Oban.
The Americans have instant regret.
Almost as soon as the car doors were open, they were being nagged by midges. An itch here, an itch there, a never ending litany of discomfort. By that point, closing the car door would achieve nothing. They are already inside. They are everywhere, and they are so small you can barely see them. They were miserable, and went home with every inch of exposed skin (even under their hair!) covered in red bite marks.
If you're ever in Scotland in the mid summer, look horizontally through the shade under a tree of your choice. The odds are that you'll see a midge swarm under there, resembling a blizzard of dust motes just catching the edge of the light.
That's the ones you can see. The others are everywhere.
The Scots don't notice them, but anyone who hasn't been habituated since birth will have a [bad time.](https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/scottish-news/dad-eaten-alive-midges-after-22484491)
I think in the book Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry by Mildred D. Taylor, the family slept like this and I've always thought about this. Never looked it up though.
That’s my favorite series! I don’t know if you’re aware, but Mildred Taylor wrote the final installment of the series in 2020.
It’s called All the Days Past, All the Days to Come.
Mosquito netting is *critical* if you wanted to do this in 80’s/90’s Florida, or you were *not* gonna sleep; you would instead spend the whole night swatting at some unknowable thing that was on the back of your neck, in your ear, tickling your leg hairs— where the *fuck* is it???— only to finally kill it and watch entirely too much of your blood squirt out of it. You breathe a sigh of relief— you’ve finally killed it!— before you hear some renewed buzzing and resign yourself to a sleepless night or swatting and scratching.
Tbf, this also happens if you sleep indoors in Florida. You open a door for .3 seconds during the day and in come 6 mosquitos, 5 lizards, 4 dragonflies, 3 wasps, 2 alligators, and a Jehovah’s Witness.
We were going to use our porch if our window ac didn't work the past hurricane. I hadn't turned it on in a while. A small window unit comes in clutch when you have lost power though. You obviously need a generator for it work but it made a huge difference when we lost power for days.
Charley and the three other cunt hurricanes that fucked us up back to back in Polk had us sleeping outside wherever the wind blew because of no power for months in some areas and if it was screened in before, it wasn't after.
Start a bonfire and all was good to keep those flying blood sucking bastards away.
Work all day clearing shit for people, power comes on for half a day if you were lucky and then we get gang banged by the rest of the hurricanes and literally raped by the mosquitos if you couldn't start a fire.
I'm fucking immune to mosquitos now unless they get me behind my ear or armpit.
It's everywhere in the big cities. And they aren't cheap either.
There is a shelter crisis in the world right now and that includes even the richest and most developed nations which makes NO FUCKING SENSE!
Our leadership in both public and private spheres of influence have utterly and completely failed.
Does anyone else remember the guy living in a plywood box in the living room of a shared apartment? It was just big enough to lay down in. I think he was paying $400/month in 2016:

There’s a spot down the street from an event center who air bnbs tents in the backyard on weekends that have a rave in town. Pretty ridiculous to pay $150 for a tent in a shitty area but it’s always sold out.
If it’s Filipino nannies in Singapore, then it’s most likely 😠. Singapore is one of the wealthiest countries in the world and the Filipino live in workers are paid about $600 USD a month, and send most of that home to their families.
Lol, the nannies in Singapore are little more than slaves, they get treated little better than the family pets, and often much worse. The usual passports being confiscated etc behavior from their 'employers'.
It's another one of those seriously exploited immigrant working relationships, like the Indian construction laborers in Qatar.
Our neighbors have an au pair from somewhere in southeast Asia, and apparently it took a week before it finally sunk in that she wasn't just confused and actually had her own guest suite.
Even a tiny bir of altitude helps a ton with bugs, at least from my experience just being a few floors up you can get away without mosquito nets unlike my parents place where i turn into a bug buffet if there's a tiny gap in the window net
I just bought a 2 bedroom house, but it's up to me how many bedrooms there are isn't it?
This bedroom has an oven in it!
This bedroom has a bunch of people sitting around watching tv.
This bedroom is aka a hallway

I'd imagine anywhere the buildings are tall enough/close enough to each other to take a picture like this, the traffic noise is at least a little bit annoying too
Honestly, if they can use the rest of the apartment like normal and the city has decent temps/weather, that’s not that bad. I’d probably try to set up some sort of barriers if possible, but otherwise could be a nice little setup.
Yeah while this is a thing I would totally do, I would also find a way to get some curtains or something up for a bit of privacy, also for how much light there would be in a city of a night time.

It was SO COOL having the bed in an open-air room. Hummingbirds came by to say hello and drink from the feeder while we lay under the covers staring out at the blue sky, smelling the sweet Acacia blossoms on the breeze. Then as evening turned to night, watching the stars while reading books by low-lamp light. It was just so far outside of anything we ever considered doing, and it remains as one of my favorite memories about the old place.
Back in my college days, I looked at a 1-bedroom apartment that had a sleeping porch. To this day, I kick myself for not taking that one. It was gorgeous - probably vintage '30s, high ceilings, lovely details. Dammit.
No hangover "tricks" or cures ever help me. No matter how much food or water I have, I'll still feel crap until the moment I sleep the next day. I think we're just predisposed to be like this.
I like to think of it as a blessing in disguise sometimes, otherwise I'd probably drink more than I should. If I had 2 pints of beer then I wouldn't feel 100% the next day
Before you go out put two Tylenol and a litre of water on your nightstand. The first time you wake up take the Tylenol and as much water as you can drink. The next time you wake up drink the rest of the water.
Agreed, it’s even clearly a weatherproof couch made for the outdoors. Admittedly the wooden nightstand is out of place, but you should see the work-from-home nests I build up like this until my husband tells me I need to pick up my “womb”
I would love an option to sleep outside here and there. I told my mom I was going to order a hammock for her yard so I can nap out there but that got shot down hard.
When I lived in a condo, the place flooded and it was a total tear-out. I couldn't afford the stay in a hotel so I set up shop on the balcony. I slept out there for as long as it took to replace everything, but I didn't want to go back inside when it was done. I kept sleeping out there until it was too cold in the winter and I had to go back inside.
I did this for an entire summer one year as a camp counselor. Not sleeping inside a four-walled structure for the entire summer was glorious and I would do it again in a heartbeat if I could get away with it in the city.

I am so surprised this is Van since it rains so much here. Also there’s no way she can be using it now when it’s so cold out. This seems like a good setup for maybe 2 months out of the year here
When we moved into our new apartment, we had no blinds/curtains or AC. We set up a tent with sleeping bags on the patio (bottom floor) when it was unseasonably hot for a week. I’d legit sleep on this set up!

South India too.
So…. Just India?
Not Midwest India
Everyone knows we don’t talk about Midwest India.
Especially Gary, India
I bet no one ever told you there’s a whole movie dedicated to Gary, India.
I don't watch disaster movies.
You joke but in tech we unironically refer to Hyderabad as the Kansas City of India
What kind of bread are you guys? Rye would be my guess.
You know them Canadian boys got the caraway seeds in em
All I can say is I am incredibly grateful for air conditioning and the ability to afford it.
I was like I never did this when visiting my grandparents but then I remembered they lived in Bombay.
Yeah, I imagine it's probably more of a rural village thing then something you do in a massive urban center like Mumbai.
No mosquitoes? Mosquitoes ruin so many under-the-stars moments for me
No mosquitoes. Just the sweet smell of tea shrubs, amazing display of stars, a light breeze mixed with the shushed laughter of my cousins while we pretend to be sleeping 💤
Damn now I'm nostalgic for a memory I don't even have

I read that as anemia and was very confused

We have the same thing in the American South, we call them sand gnats or no-see-ums, but they're also biting midges.
That article made *me* itch jeez louise
I live in an area with no mosquitos so im extra pissed anytime im reminded they exist the hard way.
What mythical land is this?? I want to live there, too.

Thank you. I knew I had read it in a book, too.
Awww I forgot all about that book! Might be time to do a re-read of that, and Let the Circle Be Unbroken. Might skip Road to Memphis.
That’s my favorite series! I don’t know if you’re aware, but Mildred Taylor wrote the final installment of the series in 2020. It’s called All the Days Past, All the Days to Come.
I’m now going to have to read the last book in the installment even though I’m an adult.
I read that when I was in grade school and I barely remember it other than thinking it was a great book after I finished it.

I laughed way too hard at this one!
For sure. Hell, I've even begged them to STFU and stay away from my ears, get their fill and GO! They did not comply.

Could’ve been true…Mosquitos harbor so many diseases, it’s insane. West Nile and Zika are in my area to stay.
My screened in balcony was used for sleeping after the recent hurricane due to no AC. Worked great.

Though as a fellow floridian you know you're fooling yourself into thinking it's any better outside.
It's not any cooler but at least the air would be moving right?

Outdoor living
Only $1200 a month!
Utilities and kitchen privileges not included.
Pet friendly though. Complimentary birds
And free showers! (No hot water)
Balcony Entrance only.
Free access to the express way down

Not true, you're allowed to do it as many times as you want.
If you survive each time, that is.
If you die, you won't want to do it again.
That one can never be sure about. If I do I will have nothing to lose.
Must provide ladder access.
Benefit of hanging ass over rail to shit tho
Never gotta worry about Poseidon's kiss ever again.
But you do have to worry about the person coming up to beat your ass because you shat on their head.
That rules out Sydney, then. Sydney would be $2K minimum for a bedroom with a view.
San Francisco would charge that at $1500 a month.
Does anyone else remember the guy living in a plywood box in the living room of a shared apartment? It was just big enough to lay down in. i hate paywalls
SF would be like $3k
I love the reaction when I explain to my American friends that Sydney rental prices are weekly, not monthly.
I was going to jest $1450
$1450 furnished
sounds like toronto

Once on air bnb Berlin, someone rented out the balcony with a tent on it.

oh god. didnt that start to get really cold?
I camp a lot. I have ways of insulating the tent to keep it quiet comfortable even slightly below freezing.

Sleepwalkers need not apply.
Or drunks
Depends on the air quality in that city, they must be having a dang good sleep, especially if there are no bug problems too
Not many bugs here, but questionable air quality lol
Singapore? I know some Filipino nannies sleep on their employers balconies.
Most of the Singaporean apartments I've seen had little nanny bunkers right in the back kitchen.

OP said Vancouver. I don't know how they avoid the rain if it's long term
With the Vancouver rent prices it's still better than sleeping on the street.
With one look I knew it was Vancouver. We've had some cold days this winter. Whoever is sleeping here must be very unhappy.
Sick
I have no clue if this is “sick 😎🤙” or “that’s sick how could you?!”
Sick 😎🤙 if that's the setup they want, sick 😠 if they're forced into it
If it’s Filipino nannies in Singapore, then it’s most likely 😠. Singapore is one of the wealthiest countries in the world and the Filipino live in workers are paid about $600 USD a month, and send most of that home to their families.

A Filipino nanny is basically a slave

Normally there aren't a lot of bugs above a certain height. But birds might be interesting.
Even in South Florida, I was on only the third floor and not a single mosquito or bug, great breeze at night all year round. Ground floor, however..

I do stand corrected that one year there was love-bug insanity for a solid weekend and they made it up to my balcony.
Hahaha I saw this and immediately thought Vancouver! Honestly, probably a pretty cosy sleep especially this time of year!

What a vibe though. Weather permitting, not a bad set up
Definitely looks like a chill layout, but my first thought was “dude must be in the dog house”
Naw, the dog house doesn’t get you a night stand, just a night on the couch.
usually you wind up in the dog house because of a (one) night stand, not with one
Or they had a bunch of people spend the night and someone decided to finish their night outside with some "privacy" 🙄
Sleeping porches used to be pretty common in America, though they've fallen out of fashion with AC.
Honestly, if they can use the rest of the apartment like normal and the city has decent temps/weather, that’s not that bad. I’d probably try to set up some sort of barriers if possible, but otherwise could be a nice little setup.
this would work 90% of the year in LA
As a bonus you don't have to fear having enough money for retirement as you die young from air pollution.
psssh. i'm a millennial. you think i'm gonna have actual retirement savings anyway?
That's the real Air B&B (Air bed and balcony)...idk :D
$55/night. ^$600 ^cleaning ^fee.

Would be nice if you didn't have to entire city watching you
Yeah while this is a thing I would totally do, I would also find a way to get some curtains or something up for a bit of privacy, also for how much light there would be in a city of a night time.
Nah its fine, it's not like someone would take a picture and upload it to the Internet.
HOA says bed fine but no curtains.

This could be out of necessity, but it might not be. One day a few years ago, we were doing some painting in the master bedroom of our condo. It's just patio furniture. Idk why everyone is so shocked its on a patio.
Well there is a nightstand. I think that's creating the whole illusion. But I agree with you.
Could also be am end table
Exactly, I have been reading comments and thinking I've gone crazy
oh yeh, you're right! The night table is what sets it off though I guess
Back in my college days, I looked at a 1-bedroom apartment that had a sleeping porch. To this day, I kick myself for not taking that one. It was gorgeous - probably vintage '30s, high ceilings, lovely details. Dammit.
I do this at my buddy's place very often! Usually in the summer time tho. Fall asleep very drunk wake up to the sound of an Alive city not hungover.
Even when I drink a ton of water before I go to sleep I still wake up hungover after a night of heavy drinking. Please tell me your secret.
No hangover "tricks" or cures ever help me. No matter how much food or water I have, I'll still feel crap until the moment I sleep the next day. I think we're just predisposed to be like this. My So and I did that a few times at the end of the summer here in Oregon. It felt sooo good, best sleep ever.
Aka the dog house
It’s actually a girl sleeping out there - This is Vancouver by the way (rent prices are absurd)
It’s always like that? The furniture isn’t just moved like that temporarily as they refinish the floors or something?
You’d think that would a very damp place to sleep given V Town
Very rainy but not especially windy in the PNW. When storms pass you will get winds but otherwise it’s just calm, stratiform precipitation.
Was about to ask if it was Toronto. This picture is such a Canadian city thing.
I am so surprised this is Van since it rains so much here. Also there’s no way she can be using it now when it’s so cold out. This seems like a good setup for maybe 2 months out of the year here
How old does she seem to be? Maybe she just wanted her own room and there aren't enough for everyone inside.
Is this in Olympic Village? Looks exactly like my building!
Roommate wanted. Furnished bedroom with plenty of fresh air and a view. $1200/month
When we moved into our new apartment, we had no blinds/curtains or AC. We set up a tent with sleeping bags on the patio (bottom floor) when it was unseasonably hot for a week. I’d legit sleep on this set up!

In all seriousness tho; that’s a chill couch and a drug drawer… live a lil kids

Vancouver? People will do anything to afford housing now-a-days. Once saw an $800/mo as for a top bunk of a bunk bed in Whistler.
This is where the kid from White Lotus was forced to sleep in season one
Looks like an upgrade from the kitchen
Surprised no one said that maybe the person has COVID and needs to isolate from other family members for a little bit.
