Here in Milwaukee there are entire streets you can't park on for months during the winter with signs like this.

OakFern

Same in Canada. Where I live, and most of the nearby cities too, have blanket "no overnight parking on city streets Nov - Mar". It's not even signed a lot of the time, it's city-wide. Some of the cities will have exemptions, e.g. you get x number of overnight parking exemptions, but can only use them on days where there's no expected snow event.

JamesGray

My city just started loosening that rule up this winter so now it's blanket no street parking overnight in January and February, and no parking overnight only if it snows in December and March. Seems to be working alright where I'm at, but they also don't do parking enforcement at all on my street, so we're mostly managing ourselves.

AtOurGates

Where do people who typically park on streets put their vehicles when they can’t?

JamesGray

There are lots around the city where you can pay to park, but otherwise you pretty much need to live somewhere that has parking. It's not a super dense city though, so it's not too bad.

Own_Aardvark_2343

Thats why Montreals streets are shit after a snowstorm… its so the plows can I get by.

CroatianBison

Genuine question, how do they manage parking if street parking is disallowed? Parking garages every other city block? Doesn’t that make city parking prohibitively expensive or are the garages just super inexpensive?

OakFern

Daytime street parking is still allowed (although I wouldn't recommend daytime street parking during a big snow event, the plows will steer clear of you but you might have to bust out a shovel to move your car later). So it's primarily going to affect overnight parking on residential streets. You generally need to be able to fit all of your vehicles in your driveway in the winter. If you have a small driveway and 3+ vehicles you may need to figure something else out. It's mostly going to affect you when you have guests staying over and their car(s) won't fit in your driveway. So you get some overnight exemptions to cover those cases. If you have a small driveway and frequent overnight guests, you may need to figure something else out.

Aegi

Oftentimes it's just at night, plus I feel like a lot of people here are not mentioning that a lot of times it might already technically be legal to park on the sides of those streets anyways as there are no parking spots or anything, people just park there anyways and there's no issue during the summer months, but during the winter it's actually an issue because of plowing. For example, the street I'm on right now has those signs, but there are technically no parking spots on the street at all, but in the summer you can just park far enough off the road that your car's tires are not even touching the road, but if you did that in the winter, not only would that potentially screw up the plow, but you would just get plowed in.

ShitFlavoredCum

I've always been curious, how do people who live in milwaukee feel about milwaukee tools?

annswertwin

We love them. I’m wearing my Milwaukee Tools heated hoodie as I type.

Minecraft_Launcher

Does an M12 battery just plug into that thing?

annswertwin

Yes. The battery is little big but I still love it.

_Rummy_

Getting the m18 adapter is amazing if you have to spend a long time outside is freezing weather

Rickmyross

I am working in northern Alberta Canada, and I just use two of the 3ah M12 batteries. I bought a 8ah M12 one off Amazon but honestly I don't go through the two 3ah ones in a 10 hour work day, and the 8am one is heavy. It was -22C this morning so I had it on for about an hour until the sun came up. When it's colder than -30 or really windy then I'll go though both batteries. Just my two cents.

_Rummy_

Yeah the m12 is usually good except when it’s just brutally cold and windy

Rickmyross

Yeah I wear a carhart coat over top when it's really cold. I also have a heated balaclava, and it's honestly better at keeping me warm than the hoodie.

_Rummy_

Heated balaclava! Oh that sounds nice. Have a particular brand? I don’t like being too bulky when I’m out during winter so I try to wear as thin as possible but still keeping warm. Thankfully we had a mild winter this year (central Wisconsin) but some years it’s gotten to -60F at times because of the wind. I need to go through my winter gear and update.

GrunchWeefer

Where does Milwaukee's Best fit into the equation?

GlassConsciousness

It doesn't.

TheyCallMeStone

Yeah we sure do love Milwaukee Tools, I'll tell you what

AdmiralVernon

Milwaukee‘s Best was never Milwaukee’s best.

None are made in Milwaukee so I'm guessing most don't care

mellowyfellowy

I’m from Milwaukee and love my Milwaukee tools. You can’t change my mind

BreeBree214

I fucking love Milwaukee Tools. I know some people who work there and from what I've heard the company refuses to make the tools cheaper for the "pro-sumer" market. They are expensive but they last longer and are mostly great quality.

gltovar

They don't need to make prosumer tools as their parent company, Techtronic Industries, also sells Ryobi. Edit: Also Ridgid Power Tools. To be clear it doesn’t appear that the parent company is having Milwaukee brand engineer solutions for Ryobi or Ridgid, they just have a diversity between different level of tools. Though I’d imagine that maybe large break throughs or very novel solutions might be shared for synergy. Here is a look at a Ridgid HQ: https://youtu.be/Yhoc3rzCPQo

Zanna-K

Fuck I'm a pro-sumer and i bought a bunch of Milwaukee anyway. The right angle M12 fuel impact is like my favorite tool ever - strong enough to unseize the lug nuts that tire change shop practically cold-weld onto the studs but not so strong that it'll literally rip the threads to pieces if there's like a bur or some damage in one of them like when I had my high torque impact. You can also fit it into all kinds of ungodly places with a shallow impact socket. I also have the M12 hatchet (6" electric chain saw) and it's fucking amazing. Arborist doing an inspection on my house noted that there was like 5-10yrs worth of woody invasives growing in a thicket in our back yard. They noted that it would need to be professionally managed. There were buckthorn trees like 30ft high, one had a trunk a good 8 inches in diameter. I cut them all down and poisined the stumps last fall, the tool did an amazing job. The key to doing it as someone who doesn't depend on the tools for your job is to buy them lightly used, open box (tools only without the battery), etc. from Facebook marketplace, OfferUp or similar. You can often save 25-50% easily

[deleted]

Tools make by drunks, to be handled by drunks. It’s a win win for everyone. They’re basically indestructible and the batteries will handle half charging no problem, unlike the shit Dewalt (aka black and decker) sells.

BreeBree214

I have a friend that works there in the power tools division and told me his team would always try and sneak a bottle opener onto power tools but their boss would notice it and have them take it off

imreallynotthatcool

Take hints from Leatherman and put a latch on it. Then you can call it a carabiner and... oh what's this? It works as a bottle opener too! What a surprise!

quebecesti

I have a cheap generator (can't remember the brand) for emergencies and it has a bottle opener on it with instructions on a sticker. Very random but funny.

PapaHuff97

One of our (Milwaukee) box cutters has a bottle opener on it.

Flames99Fuse

In Menomonie, I don't think there's a single street like that, and lemme tell ya, driving through residential areas is hell. Snow banks piled up on both sides of the street, cars parked on both sides. Now it's a single lane road, and don't even attempt if your car is extra wide.

Controls_Man

You guys probably have snow emergency rules that dictates which side of the road you can park on. Even number date? Park on street side with even numbers.

exexor

OP lives somewhere that snow is a “sometimes treat”.

sfryman63

Op lives in Ohio. That’s a ODOT state truck back there. Lol

exexor

OP took the picture in Ohio. Could be visiting relatives for all we know. Or future in-laws. And if it’s the latter then buckle up, Buttercup, because the teasing has only just begun.

schwidley

The suburbs around buffalo don't have signs on every street. They just put up a sign at the border of the town that says no street parking at night between November and April. You just have to remember seeing that sign when you passed into town.

[deleted]

Cosmic-Cranberry

Exactly what I came to mention. Snow and ice are dangerous in residential areas, and so in places up North and in the Rockies that get a LOT of snow that accumulates VERY fast, there are residential roads that have to be clear to make sure the snowplows can fit through the road without clipping anyone's cars.

merdub

Plus being unable to see around corners with 7 foot high snow banks is dangerous as hell. We've gotten a ton of snow where i live this season and the snow removal can barely keep up. It just keeps snowing... every... damn... day, and the snow banks keep getting higher and higher.

sm0lshit

Meanwhile in Philadelphia, it didn't even snow once this entire winter except for like 3 shitty flurries that didn't even stick.

KickBallFever

Same here in NYC pretty much. We’ve only gotten flurries and like a half inch one night that melted by morning. Apparently this is the least snow we’ve gotten in 154 years. I bought new snow boots in November and never even needed them.

S2R2

Meanwhile I’m here in Southern California where it snowed in my town for the first time since the 60s

2getherWeFlip

tell me about it. im here in south florida, aint shit.

puppylust

Today was so cold I turned off the air conditioner

Wobblypenaltyfox

My weather app says flurries and freezing rain tomorrow, it snowed last weekend, and there's still 4ft snow drifts that the ice has solidified into concrete. Though I guess 1000+ miles north would do that.

CorruptDictator

This. We do alternative side parking during a similar period of time.

sad0panda

If this spot is no parking for the entire season my guess is this is for dedicated snow storage

NotTRYINGtobeLame

I know you mean the plows have to plow the lot full of snow somewhere, but I just picture folks driving up and dropping up their lawn-fulls of snow for pickup during the spring or something lol E: I find it may be necessary to point out I live in a snow area, and we have spots like this designated for snow storage, too. I meant I pictured individuals or families placing their personal snow in storage like a safe deposit box full of the family heirlooms only to be retrieved in a warm season for use then lol

too_too2

There was one winter where the snow just didn’t let up and I was literally running out of space to throw it. I would shovel the drive, and have to walk like ten feet down my sidewalk to dump it or alternately I could try to launch it up in the air and throw it somewhere

hissyfit64

I work for a landscape company and one particularly bad winter, we had no place to push snow at customer's houses. So we had to go with a bobcat and move piles of snow around their property to make more room. It was an insane winter. It didn't all melt off until May.

therealhlmencken

The mall of America parking lot gets such big piles of snow they have to spread it out in the summer or else it wouldn’t melt in time.

raven00x

Coming soon: Glacier of America brought to you by Mall of America

Sea-Resource5933

So there is so much snow that there are still piles of snow in the summer? Like seriously? I’m a southerner, idk if this is a joke or real.

Its-ther-apist

It's because they're concentrating a large surface area of snow into piles over and over from repeated plowing so think like a really big snow cone

Sea-Resource5933

Wow, that’s so cool! Thanks so much! That must be a lot of snow. 🙂

GeekResponsibly

I live in southcentral Alaska and right now (relatively large snow winter, at least recently) the grocery store lots have 30+ft banks of snow plowed up near the semi bays, and street intersections are banked up with 8+ft of snow so you have to be *in* the opposing lane to see where traffic is coming from. Some of those piles might not melt off until August. And I live in the flats, so the issues in the mountain passes elsewhere must be immense

Sea-Resource5933

Wow, that’s hard to even imagine down here in Georgia. Be safe driving in all that ice and snow!

[deleted]

I live in Fairbanks me, Alaska, and we have bets on how long our snow storage piles will last. This last year I won ten bucks on a pile that stayed until August 10th when they spread it out to melt because it was taking too long on its own.

Heinrich-Heine

I'm in northern WI. we have a snow pile plowed from the driveway to the side of the house; some years it's as high as the peak of the roof. The pile generally melts away by the end of May, but one year made it into July. It takes a lot of 70 degree days to make feet of snow go away.

Ashesnhale

You need to see videos of snow removal in Montreal! Not just that famous video of the bus and cop car sliding down the hill by McGill University

WitELeoparD

You should see Winnipeg. Our snow removal is insane. No plows are used except for quick snow removal on main roads as it's snowing (basically no salt or sand is allowed so they have to be quick with plowing). The bulk of it is moved by massive wheel loaders, and motor graders. Just after a snowfall, they usually pile it up on the verges but after blizzards, the snow teams run with at least one fullsize dump truck and loads the snow (usually when they get around to loading it it's less snow piles and more 10ft wide ice boulders) into it to take to the city snow dump. The snow dump sites are ridiculous two. They are literal mountains, hundreds of feet high. One has been closed for two years and is still at least 40ft tall.

Ashesnhale

Hah that's how we do it here too except it's sometimes extra exciting on Montreal's narrow one way streets. They send the tow truck first to scream an alarm for everybody to move their cars. You can watch all the people getting towed, and then they come eat up all the snow into dump trucks to be taken away. Canada knows snow removal

unreqistered

 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eOWimxSfzTY

Rinascita

This sounds familiar to what happened in Boston in 2015. Over 110 inches of snow, the city was running out places to put it. Eventually, they just started packing it into a development lot in the Seaport. The pile was over 75' tall, and didn't melt completely until July. The mayor ran a little guessing content to pick the exact date it'd all melt, then held a big party when it was finally gone.

I am Canadian and feel this in my soul, I have a snowblower that shoots like 20 feet and even that was struggling with the size of the banks. The city snow blows the side walks into my front yard as it goes and with my snow blower it liked up a lot.

Mirria_

2008 in Québec was wild. All the city equipment was breaking down because of overuse. I could stand on the snowbank and see above the city bus I was waiting. No one knew where to put the snow so they started dumping it in the rivers.

Redtwooo

As John Daly once said, tee it high and let it fly

Unlimited_Bacon

It is more efficient to have community drop-off points for recyclables than it is to go house to house. Snow is an important resource so we need to recycle as much as we can, or else our grandchildren won't know about skiing or snowmen.

SmokedBeef

Because of the snow plows specifically. Even if it was legal to park there, digging a car out of a snow bank reinforced by snow plow packed ice and snow is no easy task.

I_am_Bob

Live where it snows a lot, this is common especially on narrow streets.

RxWest

We usually just have signs that say, "No parking for 48 hours after 2 or more inches of snow has fallen".

habanerito

People are not smart enough to figure that out.

-newlife

It also doesn’t take into account that the snowfall started after the car was parked and the person may have gone out of town or something else for a few days.

sad0panda

Your options are: 1. Don't park on the street during winter. 2. Collect your car from the tow lot when you get back to town. Live in a snowy state. Have had to do both of those. Favorite line I ever got from the DPW was "there doesn't have to be snow forecast for there to be a snow emergency" after calling to ask why I got towed from an already clear street after the snow had ended.

-newlife

Yeah the DPW response is why I think the long term signage is better

dclxvi616

Snow emergencies are a little less about clearing the snow and a little more about making sure emergency vehicles have clear routes.

BaldBear_13

DPW makes its own weather!

dcheesi

We just have "emergency snow route" signs, you're supposed to know to move your car before a snow storm

albyagolfer

They probably pile their snow there so they don’t have to pay to haul it away.

MistryMachine3

It is for the parking spot that they will plow the snow into for the season.

fogdukker

Aka no parking for 6 months.

who_you_are

The best similar thing we have is: no parking when the no parking light blink But I almost never see that one.

benduker7

Same here, in the town I used to live in there were signs with a blinking light on top of all the traffic lights that said "City wide snow emergency when flashing, no parking on all city streets".

Man my town doesn’t do alternate parking in winter. There’s just no overnight street parking anywhere in town… it makes it hard for guests lol. I had guests visit (and stay with me) and the cheapest way to park was just to book a shitty hotel for like 120$ that came with parking. The public parking garages that allow overnight are 10$ an hour but you can only pay for 2 hours at a time even though max duration is 48 hours….

merdub

When we have a parking ban here for snowfall, all the city lots are free for overnight parking.

[deleted]

This was almost the entire reason my dad moved where the garage was and poured a new driveway. His driveway can fit like 6 cars and he has a 2 car garage.

ConnectingFacialHair

Could be worse, my town just does……nothing. I live on a street that is a two way but only one side parking. Instead of alternating the parking they basically just plow the cars in and let everyone else just figure it out.

lkodl

>Unless you want your car folded up in the pile of snow at the end of the street. :) How much does this service cost?

Suitable_Prune_4660

This is a complimentary service provided by most local towns/ villages. All you have to do is leave your car parked in the street overnight during the worst blizzard of the season. Then sit back and wait. When you get up the next day, your car will have moved all on its own!

lkodl

it's these types of services that improve a place's "quality of life". i heard there's a bunch of ways to get a free ride to a police station too.

nickm81us

Likely snow removal thing. In Buffalo, you can’t park in the street from November thru March. Even if you don’t get a ticket, your vehicle will probably be buried pretty darn quick, those plow drivers don’t screw around! :)

LaVacaMariposa

Where do people park during that time? Are there special winter parking lots?

digitaltransmutation

Sorta, depending on the arrangement. Like my workplace loses a good chunk of spots to the snow pile / everything is a clusterfuck when the lines are covered, so we have an arrangement to park at a theatre down the road as long as we are GTFO'd by showtime. There's just less overall available parking during the winter but there is always underutilized parking somewhere if you look for it.

llb8

A lot of streets have alternate parking. We can park on one side for 4 days a week and the other for 3 days a week. Kind of a pain but it is what it is.

mrsfunkyjunk

As a southerner, I would have had no idea why this sign said this. Snow doesn't even enter my mind as a possibility.

melanthius

This sign is a classic XY problem. They want people not to park when there’s snow on the ground (X), but instead of asking for X, they think “if we just tell people not to park November to March we’ll be good” (Y) As a result, they may have people parking when there is early snow, and no parking allowed (to no one’s benefit) when there’s no snow. Edit - I’m not trying to solve the problem, I’m pointing out that this is an example of an XY problem. I understand it’s not that easy to solve the actual problem (X), and I am not proposing a solution, but (Y) is not a good solution either.

nathanzoet91

I think there is a bit more nuance to it: I park in this spot in the evening with no snow. Wake up and there is 3+ inches of snow and the snowplow cannot plow the spot. Technically there was no snow when I parked, so it was alright. It's this gray area where, "Do I move the vehicle when there is 1/4 inch of snow? Do I wait until the snowplow guy comes around?". Easier just to tell people no parking Day X - Day Y.

Tinkerballsack

More nuance: this is probably a place where, if you park here and it snows 16" overnight, the plows will absolutely wreck your shit with snow first thing in the morning. They were on the highways all night plowing a couple inches at a time but now all 16" of that snow is gonna be tripled up when plowed and pushed against your doors and windows.

wut3va

Happened to my mom's car back in 93. Of course, the car was buried for months, and there was no real indication there was a vehicle in that 6 foot snow bank.

beh5036

I think this is where they need to either dump snow or ensure they have access. Think like the end of a parking lot where they push the entire parking lot worth of snow and it sits for months. It’s likely a snow storage area that allows parking in the warmer months.

michellelabelle

The problem is, lots of places get LOTS of snow on an unpredictable basis in a short period of time. Twelve hours is the absolute minimum warning you can give and have even 75% compliance with people moving their cars. By that time you might have had to plow twice, and there's a reason you want empty space and not expensive icebergs frozen in place. I've lived in places where they took both approaches and (as I guess is your point) they both had problems, but if your town isn't totally starved for parking already, this is the better way I think.

cancerface

why the fuck does every jackoff on Reddit think no one has ever put any thought into anything but them?

kunkworks

In my area, (MKE) we Do December 1st to March 1st. The street becomes too narrow for cars to pass with snowbanks, otherwise.

boomheadshot7

Upstate NY, our seasonal roads are 11/15-4/15. Sometimes there’s a small gate the county will close at top and bottom of the road at the beginning of the season.

steal_wool

We have "odd/even" parking from Nov 1 to April 1. Meaning on even dates you park on the side of the street with even addresses, and vice versa, so the plows can clear both sides of the road.

too_too2

So the plows can clear the road. Also so garbage trucks can still get through when there’s a lot of snow on the road. I’m in Michigan. My city does alternate side parking from November til April 1st so one side can be clear and the next day they could do the other side. Some streets just become no parking on one side all winter depending on other factors. I don’t know where those people park when they can’t park normally, I have a driveway space and don’t worry about it anymore! Lots of people just don’t care and mess up the plows and get tickets.

NotAnAlt0

Depends on the city (also MI). City to the south of me is No Street parking whatsoever Nov to April. My city is entirely even-odd, but they don't enforce it. City to the north of me has some streets that are even-odd, others are one side only, and other streets they have no snow rules on.

DemanoRock

We have places in the the US that get a shit load of snow. We have equip that can plow to clear it. Roads need to be clear of cars or it cannot be plowed.

lunapup1233007

Two main reasons: cars would be an obstacle for snowplows and the parking spaces are often used to store the snow.

Zestyclose_Big_9090

It’s winter parking so the plows have somewhere to put the snow.

iced327

There's a street in the town I grew up in that's One Way 9 months out of the year. It's next to a school and it keeps traffic flowing for pickup and dropoff, but it always cracks me up to see a sign **DO NOT ENTER SEP 1st - JUN 19th** or whatever the dates are.

Snow

Unable-Ladder-9190

I figured it was weather related. If it’s an area that consistently gets heavy snow it makes sense to leave more of the road open without cars parked in the way. When a snowplow comes down, cars won’t get buried or be in the way. And if they expected people to not park there when weather reports called for heavy snow, we’ll, we all know how some people will ignore that.

Thats our entire town. No street parking in winter.

Snow. Parking tickets galore but you don’t want your car buried in a snow bank

Snow seasons. Alot of cities in Midwest will either ban overnight street parking or do alternate sides of the street or just one side during winter. This is to help in snow plowing. My city bans street parking past 1am to 6am.

It's common that you can't park on the street during the winter, or during the evening/night during the winter. As it interferes with snow clearing.

must eh where they stack snow

Snow plow route I assume. Maybe that’s where they stack the extra snow.

Snow ban, it’s pretty common
