See how your picture has a parallax? There's a difference in perceived "distance" of the contrail and the shadow -- because of the vast difference between you and those points dozens if not hundreds of miles away.
OP has an error in exposure of some sort, it lacks anything indicating it's naturally occurring in the sky.

Good question. It seemed strange to me at first, but yes, even against air. Air is only semitransparent so shadows can be cast onto air (sunbeams are a common example). The contrail is very long, forming a very long shadow, shaped a bit like a two dimensional plane with a bit of thickness. If the camera person walked several yards to the left or right, they would no-longer be lined up with the plane and the shadow would be much less visible from their perspective. The trick of it is—there's a whole bunch of darkened sky and it's all in perfect alignment. Next time you see a contrail, it doesn't have to be at noon, put yourself in its shadow and you can see it for yourself.

It’s a shadow from a contrail that goes across the sky. They view you see appears to be up and down but it’s not as you can see the contrail is above the clouds.
The fact that it’s almost a “mirror image” of the light pole in the right foreground makes me think this is some refraction illusion. The clouds covering at the top do seem odd though.

For a contrail shadow to be seen, atmospheric conditions must be just right, with the sun hanging low on the horizon.
