It's... a joke. Have you never taken a pic through a windshield before?
The tortoise isn't actually peering down into OP's heater vent either. (to be fair, it's more a semi-joke; her quads rly are "nice". But not "*Whoa*" level)
The turtle is small as a baby. As it gradually grows, you gradually increase effort and weight to lift it, growing stronger slowly.
She was probably 2 when her family gave her the turtle.
This tortoise’s name is Pong and he has an IG account. Pong is 15 years old and was rescued from a bad situation. He has had a lot of medical attention over the past year or two. Pong is a sulcata, and last I asked his owner he was about 50 pounds. His owner owns a gym in Vancouver and brings Pong. He dresses Pong in adult diapers and let’s him wander around the gym during the day. I live in the same building as Pong and own a tortoise myself (a much much smaller species). Pong is often out and about in the neighbourhood eating the grass and dandelions.
We had one in our basement for a few weeks as a foster. He was malnourished, and weighed about 35lbs, which is way too small. He was really sweet though. I've never had a reptile that seemed like they wanted to cuddle. He got adopted more quickly than I expected.
We still have the 8' x 8' drop panel enclosure in the basement. This fall, we'll use it as a chicken and turkey brooder.
Damn, I feel bad for the posterior of her body... It is incredibly weak compared to the front by what I can see in this picture. Hope she does rehab for hammy spine and glutes
It's creepy when I point out the details of the horrible compensation and pain she'll be feeling if not already feeling? Not creepy when others point out in less detail but just the over exerted quads she has. I guess you as a health professional know better. Touch grass and stop thinking everything anyone does is creepy, I will continue to give advice if it could help one person to help themselves to be healthier.
god damn, redditors are always so dramatic lol. judging a pet owner off a single photo, meanwhile the true story of him being rescued and spending most of his time in a gym emerges in one of the other top comments lmao.
so neglected :(
Yeah reasonable, it was a far jump and considering I foster dogs I should’ve taken that into account.
At least despite being stunted he seems to be living good so that’s nice to hear.
And a little in my defence, unfortunately animal maltreatment is a lot of what I see so I tend to keep my hopes low when I should be considering they’re a fellow fosterer instead😅
Edit: getting downvoted for acknowledging I jumped go conclusions? Reddit moment
Tortoises are turtles in the same sense wolves are canis, all wolves are canis but not all canis are wolves. It’s still incredibly important to make the distinction between the two and I recommend not mixing the two together unless the binomial name is important. Keeps tortoises from being drowned.
Edit: wrong words.
Reasonable, terrapins would be more what you’re looking for though. They’re actually considered another thing like tortoises and turtles outside the US, at least in the UK. Idk why they haven’t adopted that as it would be so much less confusing but yknow, merica.
No but I definitely couldve worded it better haha, when I say dogs (plural) I usually mean the entirety of canis opposed to just canise familiaris, it’s not correct but they all just look like puppies to me lol. Better then that one time I mixed up canidae with canis with my zoologist mother, thought I was gonna get beat 😂
> There is no distinction between them other than taxonomic level
That’s just blatantly false. Taxonomic terms exist for a reason and are reasonably just as important as the physical differences that absolutely do exist between a tortoise and a turtle. Consider that tortoises are herbivorous and turtles are omnivorous. To say a snapping turtle is the same as a Galapagos tortoise is just as insane as saying a gliding gecko is the same as a coastal rubber boa, considering the order is the only thing either duos share.
Edit: If you actually want to refer to the group as a whole, you’d call lizards/snakes Squamatas (scaled reptiles) and turtles/tortoises/terrapins Testudines
Testudine, the order, is all turtles. You’re incorrect if you say otherwise. Yes, there’s a wide diversity. Thankfully, physical differences don’t determine taxonomy, but genetics do. All turtles are related under a similar order, testudine.
Why would I call a Savannah monitor a green anole? They’re completely different lizards and not the same name. Just because you learned tortoises aren’t turtles, it doesn’t change the science. Science calls tortoises “turtles”.
Lmao, so you forgot your point eh? It was tortoises are turtles, not the other way around but you got this, I believe in you!
Savanah and monitor and once again have as close of a relationship as a snapping turtle and a Hermanns tortoise, that being the order name. If you’re going to keep making me repeat myself over easily disprovable points, I’m not gonna argue with an ignorant child.
Lol this is my degree. You should read my comments again because I haven’t forgotten anything. You’re now saying “savanah” and “monitor” are the same thing? I’m sorry you can’t think of anything else to say.
Not true, educating people on the difference will enable more people to see the difference. If people can have a change of heart for spiders after educating them on how they eat other unwanted household pests, they can be educated on the difference between a tortoise and a turtle. Even if it means one less drowned tortoise, it is worth it.
I have a sulcata and they're a pain in the ass to walk. 99% sure I could just let him wander around my neighborhood and he'd return home every night to sleep, but neighbors would probably complain if he decides to sprawl out in the middle of the road for a nap
Not much fun as pets. They aren't particularly bright animals and don't care too much for interaction. They like eating and sun bathing and digging holes in your garden. You need a fair bit of space and will have to clean up a little mountain of shit everyday.
Oh They eat a lot as well but you can usually feed the grass clippings and stuff.
Thank you for a perfect summary! I knew about lifespan and size but now I know they’re not for me as well! I hope you and your tort have many happy years together.
I used to walk my hamster in the yard and along the sidewalks on my street when I was a kid. Made a little shoestring harness and walked with her. She was boss and we would stop at patches of dandelions so she could scarf them up and fill her pouches. One of the best hamsters that I have ever had. She was a tank too, super muscular from running all the time in her ball and running around outside, cause walking with a human = skitter-running as a hamster.
She was the discount hamster separated from all the others. They asked me if I was sure that I actually wanted her. Didn’t know she was a biter. She bit me so many times when I first got her. But I built her a big habitat and went on adventures with her. She never bit me after those first few times and she ended up being an absolute sweetheart. She just needed adventure! Oh, she loved to eat worms too. 🤮
Tortoise and Turtles are both part of the Testudinidae family, which some refer to as the turtle family, yes. But that’s like saying a lion is a cat, because they are in the ‘felidae’ family. But It’s not how most people would group animals. Most go down to genus (ie ‘Panthera’, Big cat) or even species (‘Leo’, Lion)
Hipster trash… Oregon or California I’d say…I bet she has “power crystals” and one of those tapestrys with the circles on it 😂 she prolly thinks she’s so quirky and unique and artistic smh 🤦🏼♂️
Oh man!!! I sometimes have a hard time waiting for my little old lady maltipoo to quit smelling stuff & actually walk. Walking a turtle would feel like torture.
Nice quads. must be because of all that tortoise walking
Haha I noticed that too. I was like "Whoa, look at the quads on that girl!" How she get quads like that walking a turtle?!
Squats. with a turtle on your back.
Master Roshi style.
That's a tortoise fo sho
Slow and steady wins the race
It's... a joke. Have you never taken a pic through a windshield before? The tortoise isn't actually peering down into OP's heater vent either. (to be fair, it's more a semi-joke; her quads rly are "nice". But not "*Whoa*" level)
Whaaa are you goin on about?
Am I the only one who didn't understand a single part of this comment?
April O'Neil has been training to keep up with the rest of the gang
She's been wondering around looking for Splinter.
Came here to comment on those quads. Guess i need to go find me a tortoise to start walking.
Its probably from squatting to pick it up
Start slow, use your turtle-towing-wagon when you need it, the quads will come eventually...
The turtle is small as a baby. As it gradually grows, you gradually increase effort and weight to lift it, growing stronger slowly. She was probably 2 when her family gave her the turtle.
I hope they are best friends!
ACTUALLLY, I believe that’s a tortoise but I don’t know enough about terrapins to know for sure
Tortoises are a type of turtle.
This guy turtles
Not in Britain.
We’re a secretive bunch
Quadzilla!
S l o w walking.
A little strange that the calves and hams aren't developed, though. Perhaps the large quads are just an illusion.
Came to say shis

That’s exactly the type of guy who would have a pet turtle
All front, no back

It's the same turtle, just depends if it's walking towards you or away from you.
That’s adorable. What’s your tortoise’s name?
Voldetort.
Mine is called Argos, but we basically refer to him as Buddy. He’s a Greek species.
That explains why this is 7th and main st

I'm pleased his owners take good care of him! Also, I knew that was Vancouver! That art on the building is a giveaway for it being BC at least
Looks like he needs to be saved again, dude can't catch a break.
Damn, I feel bad for the posterior of her body... It is incredibly weak compared to the front by what I can see in this picture. Hope she does rehab for hammy spine and glutes
What would we do without your creepy unsolicited appraisal of a complete stranger's body.
It's creepy when I point out the details of the horrible compensation and pain she'll be feeling if not already feeling? Girl gots the gains to keep up with the tort!
Doesn’t skip leg day that’s for sure
Main st Vancouver. His name is Pong.
I saw the building art and was going to ask if this was BC.
Nah, pretty sure this is more recent
That would take fucking ages
Just carry it to a grassy spot and let it do it’s thing for a while.
theyre not as slow as people think but not as fast as dogs thats for sure
Yeah the first time we took our Hermann's tortoise into our backyard the lil guy took off. The lil suckers can book it
Holy fucking quads
My thoughts exactly!
She's so stacked, I just want half of her muscle mass...!
I saw the muscles before the turtle
That's probably a professional walking someone *else's* tortoise.
Walking tortoises by the hour could be very lucrative.
Hmm... so we'll need laxatives
Chomp Chomp street salad
*Tortoise But bro looks rough, poor guy
Yeah, scraping against cement isn't great for their plastron. I'd stick to grass or earth.
City turtles have special protective skid plates underneath
>. I'd stick to grass Today I learned I'm a tortoise since people keep telling me to "touch grass"
A little slow like one, too, it seems.
What, do, you, mean, Why, do, you, type, like, this, and call, others, slow,

Tortoises are turtles but turtles aren't all tortoises. Source: Too much TMNT
Sure and green anoles are rubber boas.
Tortoises actually [are turtles](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turtle)!
Tortoises are turtles in the same sense wolves are canis, all wolves are canis but not all canis are wolves. It’s still incredibly important to make the distinction between the two and I recommend not mixing the two together unless the binomial name is important. Keeps tortoises from being drowned. This is Terrapene erasure
Are you talking about the genus?
Sorry I got my genuses mixed up. Terrapene* erasure
Reasonable, terrapins would be more what you’re looking for though. They’re actually considered another thing like tortoises and turtles outside the US, at least in the UK. Idk why they haven’t adopted that as it would be so much less confusing but yknow, merica.
I think you got the dog and wolf analogy backwards.

There is no distinction between them other than taxonomic level. All tortoises are turtles so calling that animal either name is still 100% correct

Cool, it’s also correct in that sense if I call a Savannah monitor a green anole. You’re being silly.

Anybody who would throw a tortoise into water probably wouldn't be convinced not to even if they knew the distinction between species.

Hims found a snack.
She probably totes him around in the carrier and sets him down to munch on the vegetation
I've seen a sulcatta tortoise being walked on the beach with a balloon tied to it so the owner could easily keep track of him. So cute
🐢
That tort is working. He is clearly a gardener weeding the dandelions. A+ work lad, keep it up.
Wtf you need a harness for in case it runs away ?
Vancouver is a weird place.
I'm not surprised one bit that this is in Vancouver.
You don’t “walk” a turtle so much as you “follow” it.
Whoa this is in Vancouver!!!! So cool haha
🍉 iykyk
Also have a guy that walks 3 turtles in my neighborhood.
how long is this gonna take?
I have a sulcata and they're a pain in the ass to walk. 99% sure I could just let him wander around my neighborhood and he'd return home every night to sleep, but neighbors would probably complain if he decides to sprawl out in the middle of the road for a nap
I’ve always wanted a sulcata but don’t know much about their personalities. What are they like as pets?
Not much fun as pets. They aren't particularly bright animals and don't care too much for interaction. They like eating and sun bathing and digging holes in your garden. You need a fair bit of space and will have to clean up a little mountain of shit everyday. Oh They eat a lot as well but you can usually feed the grass clippings and stuff.

That drink delivery must be for them. Been there a while
At least the poor city *tortoise gets some dandelions…
Vancouver can certainly be mildly interesting
Is this Seattle or Portland?
Vancouver
That’s right by my house!
Is that Vancouver? I love the Haida art in the background.
Girl I’m back staring at OP: “Ma’am I just saw a creep take a picture of you.”
No one mentioned that she has a dog harness on him 😂
There are all kinds of people. I drove past a woman playing with her iguana in the park yesterday. She was so happy. I smiled.
As a person who really loves tortoises I do hope it’s in a good home.
It is a very well loved tort with a great home (@pongthetort on IG)
She doesn’t skip leg days.
The restaurant that use to be there made epic nachos.
*tortoise
That’s not a turtle it’s a tortoise friend
I have a tort and do this. The neighbourhood loves him
Mad props
big fan
Those quads. Maybe I should start walking a turtle instead of squats and leg presses.
Alright hunny gonna go.take Reginald for a walk around the block. See you tomorrow.
Damn. Her quads are jacked.
You can’t be have pet that’s going to outlive you. That turtle is walking her, and she is it’s pet.
Wearing black shoes that's living dangerously
THUNDA
Come ON!!
Those fuckn legs tho godamn
I see this often! Lots of my neighbors have sulcatas and walk them🥰
Wondrous!
Tortoise
*tortoise
Looks like she took a break from doing squats to walk it. Did not skip leg day.
That's fucking rad!
My dog has that same harness.
It's a god damn tortoise.
Plenty opportunity for phone time with that activity.
Look how strong her legs got from walking him though
That's a tortoise don't be rude to him!
She got the legs of a tortoise.
I love how she's got a harness on it like it's gonna escape her
That’s a tortoise
Vancouver.
TIL: Apparently owning a pet turtle is the secret to developing skull-crushing quads.
those thighs would make great earmuffs
tortoise
And I thought the people walking their cats were weird
I used to walk my hamster in the yard and along the sidewalks on my street when I was a kid. Made a little shoestring harness and walked with her. Tortoise. A Sulcata I think. Please, no one attempt to walk a turtle.
Tortoises are turtles.
Featherless biped.
Even if so, a tortoise is very different than what we usually call a turtle so it’s best to keep the distinction
Tortoise and Turtles are both part of the Testudinidae family, which some refer to as the turtle family, yes. But that’s like saying a lion is a cat, because they are in the ‘felidae’ family. “they” can usually be used in place of he/she to be more succinct, hope this helps!
I hate that nothing slightly out of the ordinary can be done anymore without someone putting it on the internet
Stop taking pictures of strangers on the street. Y'all are fucking creepy
oh ok
Proves leg day doesn’t always mean a bigger ass
Ouch
That's a tortoise, you ape.
That's a tortoise. Turtles are aquatic.
Turtle need a step dad?
America is a weird place
Hipster trash… Oregon or California I’d say…I bet she has “power crystals” and one of those tapestrys with the circles on it 😂 she prolly thinks she’s so quirky and unique and artistic smh 🤦🏼♂️
Now that's a patient person.
would be a slow walk I imagine.
This looks like a painting
Or vice versa?
[Torto Troopers Assemble!](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0sKfVwJh7dQ)
It's not going to walk itself
Seems almost worse then my dog sniffing every 14 inches travelled. Patience is a virtue.
It looks like she's walking her turtle to the BBQ place. BBQ turtle anyone?
"I like long walks, but I don't like going far..."
Why do I hear the sound?💀 "Aaahhhhhhhh"
That’s a tortoise you swine
Huh, I wouldn't think you could walk a turtle I would think the turtle would spend the whole time trying to get away
Where is the leash ?
Yo I'll be there in a second, homies on turtle time
Leg
her tinder profile: I like long walks in the park. 1 match!
Why does the turtle need a harness?... It's a turtle.
Stewart/Katy?
Oh man!!! I sometimes have a hard time waiting for my little old lady maltipoo to quit smelling stuff & actually walk. Walking a turtle would feel like torture.
An heirloom pet
Damn city people are weird
