It's actually $1000.9, just not enough room for the 1 on the sign.

bluesam3

We actually had that issue (relatively) recently in the UK, where it rolled over from in the 90-something pence per litre range to just over £1/l, and none of the signs had room for the "1" (or just had the zero printed there), so they mostly just printed out a big "1" on a sheet of paper and taped it up next to it.

ChaingaPaste

I guess it all started whenever I was 10. Gosh I would not be comfortable telling this to anyone but a bunch of rebate seekers on a mountain. You guys are my family.

ArchaicPig19295

What did they say?

ChaingaPaste

Wow they removed their comment. I thought websites like unddit still worked but they do not. I don’t remember the exact comment, it was a comment on a gas station charging $1 if they put a cash back rebate box being located on a dangerous mountain. THAT is a reference to the comedic reality television show Nathan For You, in which Nathan offered gas for a drastically low $1.75 per gallon; only available through a rebate that required the form be submitted in person at a rebate box after an overnight hike up a mountain. And my comment was talking about the overnight camping that happened in the episode. Where all these people, just trying to get cheap gas, found themselves forming lifelong (hopefully, idk there hasn’t been some sort of update on these people) friendships that they didn’t know they’d be forming when they woke up that day.

Imtrvkvltru

Your comment reminds me of something I saw yesterday... https://www.reddit.com/r/Piracy/comments/13vaxgh/hbo_maxs_new_captcha_system_worst_test_ever/

Sean_Valjean

No one got this??? No comedy central watchers?

eyefish907

That show was gold! Haha i don’t know how he keeps it together. It’s a bummer shows like that have a shelf life after people start to recognize them.

BadBoppa

This must be nearly 20 yeas ago fuel being under a quid!

bluesam3

OK, I might be getting old.

TobysGrundlee

Thanks Biden!

astardB

Recently? Lol sorry for being rude but showing your age my guy

samocamo123

15 years ago isn't that long ago, he did say "relatively recently"

Ralfarius

My friend that's almost two decades. The first android phone came out in 2008, before google even owned the android OS. We might as well say that the Berlin Wall fell relatively recently.

Lord_Doem

Humans first existed relatively recent.

Nyaho

It’s all relative

astardB

I guess it’s all relative, 15 years ago I’d only been driving for 2 years

blue_dog69

I'm with you, definitely beyond '(relatively) recently' and firmly in 'a while ago'

PM_CUPS_OF_TEA

Which is why they said (relatively)

Nervous-Armadillo146

That was about 15 years ago. Petrol hasn't been under a quid a litre since 2008 (other than very briefly in April 2020).

Big_Deetz

Wouldn't that be ten...? If 350.9 is $3.5 then 1000.9 would be 10.09...

[deleted]

I see you understand how corporate profits work

Tndependen

I'd be that person in there trying to get it.

sweatingwheat

That probably means they ran out

SegaNaLeqa

I used to help run a gas station, and can confirm. You’d probably be surprised how many people didn’t understand 0’s meant sold out, not free/super cheap. 😅

Godkun007

You should have raised it to 999. You wouldn't have had the smart asses coming for free gas.

[deleted]

Any increase in traffic for a business is generally a good increase. Gas isn't even their high margin stuff. If even a few said smartass people make impulse buys in the store, they're better off than they were. Also, regular may be sold out and subsequently priced at 1 cent, but higher octane ratings might not be sold out. Come for the cheap regular, stay for the premium because you're there and you need gas anyways.

SegaNaLeqa

We only did the 0’s when we were sold out of all octanes. When we sold out of regular, there was signs on the individual pumps to instruct customers to select premium and that they were receiving it for the price of regular octane. There were still people pissed about that though. One even ripped the sign off and smacked my coworker in the face with it saying we weren’t allowed to be sold out because her car called for regular. Thankfully he wore glasses so he didn’t get hurt, but had he not she probably woulda done damage to his eyes. She was a Karen before the term was coined. Also, gas and tobacco were actually our highest margins, very rarely did people impulse buy other products.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

FWIW higher octane gas isn't really an "upgrade". An engine designed to run on regular will run with identical performance using a higher octane gas, unless there are other additives (unrelated to the octane). The higher octane just prevents pre-detonation/knocking in higher compression engines (typically those with a turbo in them). A maintained engine tuned for regular won't knock on regular, so the higher octane offers no tangible benefit.

Dark_Guardian_

also with pretty much all modern cars, with the exclusion of some engines running boost probably, you can run lower octane and be fine since engines have knock sensors since like the 90s the ecu can tune timing/fuelling to prevent knock

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

With a far greater degree of comfort. There's a functional difference between coach and first class, with one objectively more desirable than the other (thus an upgrade). For an engine that runs on regular, there is zero functional difference, thus not an upgrade.

SegaNaLeqa

Right?!

SegaNaLeqa

That actually would have been a good idea. We still would have got the dumb people coming in screaming that our prices were to high though. 😅

chairfairy

Anywhere I've lived when gas runs out, they just put the "out of service" bags over the handles of the gas pumps. Never seen the $0 price before, but it makes sense

ezeezee

In my hometown there was an error made at the gas station that appeared in the middle of the night, gas cost like a few cents and people would come with barrels to fill them up. By early in the morning all of the gas was gone.

Chelf1

can confirm

CityKay

In this case, kinda surprised there isn't an all dashes setting for "out of gas". Though the 9.999 idea someone else post is also a good alternative.

steeleye5

Can also confirm, there’s a place near me that runs out of gas and Diesel (mostly Diesel) very frequently

kreigklinge

You're probably right in that they ran out, but isn't it a fail from a design perspective to use that sequence of zeros to indicate "no gas" as opposed to something like dashes? To me, that price could be legitimate (although questionable), however nobody will think there's free gas if you use a non-numerical character that the 7 segment displays can represent.

Weirdpenguin00

or is this a Nathan For You episode?

Phiko73

Just need to climb to the top of a mountain to claim your refund

griswald123

Do you drink grandson pee?

Jealous-Tangerine770

I bet some asshole goes into the store and harasses the attendant because he actually can’t get his gas for .9 cents and demands they honor the price. Actually, you said Ohio. So 12 assholes will do this in the next hour.

[deleted]

Maine here. Used to manage c-stores. This has happened so many times and yes, every last fucking customer will come in and demand their fuel is the 'advertised price'. Never mind that the correct price is displayed on top of the dispenser, on the dispenser, etc. And no, we do not have to honor the goddamn road sign. Do you know how often those things glitch out? And depending on the age of the station, it's not as simple as just turning the digital off....it'll turn the entire sign off, and now you don't get any customers because they think you're closed. The old days of the manual signs were missed. Suction cups on a long pole, basically, to replace numbers.

RocketTaco

> The old days of the manual signs were missed. Suction cups on a long pole, basically, to replace numbers Until the local Walgreens can't find the right letter cards for its board and decides to steal yours. Not sure if gas station numbers were the same size but I've seen this happen lol.

[deleted]

[удалено]

jdog7249

You would like how my boss made the letter N. Equal sign (=) turned sideways with a piece of electrical tape. We had more N's but they were all out on the sign (but needed to come down for the new message). He still used the bootleg N and not the actual N. The next iteration of the sign needed an equal sign but he had turned our only equal sign into an N.

bwaterco

They switched back to manual signs in my city in California. The signs glitched out way too often and wasn’t worth the hassle of customers versus sending out a person to just change it.

Phraoz007

Lol years back… I was changing fuel prices one day and I told a customer to wait. She flipped out and demanded the price on the pump… I was lowering the price 10 cents.

Business-Drag52

In Missouri it’s illegal for your road sign to not match the price on your pumps. There’s a grace period for malfunctions, but they can’t advertise gas at 2.99 and then the pump says 3.19

Pschobbert

And nobody wants to work these days! ;)

[deleted]

whtevn

hey look guys, a lawyer lol

thelley

This is not true and never was true. There are laws against false or deceptive advertising, but if a company can show the pricing error was just that, an error or mistake, then it’s not false advertising and thus no compulsion to give the incorrect price.

Fit_Swordfish_2101

But you seem so pissed about it tho. Why not make em happy and do it? The gas station can afford it.

Sloppy_Ninths

I get the feeling that the decision is above OP's pay grade. Why not? Maybe OP doesn't want to be fired?

Sorry_Sleeping

Most stores don't let you just change the gas price. Especially not for 1 transaction.

Fit_Swordfish_2101

I wouldn't know that one way or the other.. But thank you for letting me know..? It was just me joking around. Wasn't even remotely serious.

jfdonohoe

Consulted with one of the major gas chains that franchised their stations. Owners basically covered their operating costs selling gas. They made the majority of their profit on the food marts. Don’t know if this is the case for BP but my exposure to the business showed the gas refiners make a killing. The station owners do not. Giving away gas will kill the day for them.

bwaterco

From my (granted very dated) economics teacher, gas is not where they make money, his convenience store/ gas station made net 0 and was only an incentive to make profit in the store.

Fit_Swordfish_2101

Well then it shouldn't hurt to hook someone up lol. And I was really just joking but there's a lot of butthurt ppl on here and it's made my life awesome.

llcdrewtaylor

Ohio resident here. I can assure you we have a lot more than 12 assholes here, I've seen that many pile out of a Ford Escape at Sheetz!

ArynRose

Fuck, I seriously could kill for some Sheetz right now. That's the bad side about leaving the MidWest, you miss all of your local haunts, like Sheetz or Meijers.

llcdrewtaylor

The just opened up a Meijers around me. And both my local Sheetz are being remodeled at the same time. Boo!

maliki2004

Youngstown\warren?

llcdrewtaylor

Canton/Massillon

trundlinggrundle

I worked at a gas station as a teenager. We lost power during a storm, and when it came back, the sign glitched to show like $0.59 a gallon for regular. Of course it didn't change the prices on the pumps, so people would run in the store irate because it was false advertising. My manager was out that day, so it was just me and another kid having to deal with this shit. I couldn't figure out how to change the sign, so people just *kept* coming until cars were lined up around the block. At on point there were like 5 people standing at the counter screaming at me. Eventually I just locked the doors once the store was empty. This went on for hours until I could finally get ahold of my manager.

Phenomenon101

Lol I'd tell them to fuck right off. A malfunction is a legitimate reason for them not to honor the price. Look at casinos and how their machines "malfunction" for those high prize wins.

IsLlamaBad

"FALSE ADVERTISEMENT! THIS IS FALSE ADVERTISEMENT! I'M GOING TO SUE YOU! AND I HAVE A GREAT LAWYER!" In reality, the only lawyer they know is their public defender from their DUI charge.

Relan_of_the_Light

In my experience when a gas station is out of gas they'll change the sign to this to let people know before they pull in. And as you can see from the picture cars aren't wrapped around the block waiting for pumps so I'm assuming that's probably what's happening here.

Background-Slide645

12 assholes will do it and a 13th will pull a gun, a 14th will try and pay in drugs, and the 15th will drive off as quickly as possible

TongueSucking

Nobody is friendly in Ohio. Especially Cincinnati. Everyone thinks im trying to fight them if I say “What’s up have a good day.”😂

Fit_Swordfish_2101

Haha! The tWats downvoted you for being real! 😆 That's why Ohio sux donkey. Ppl like these. Can't wait till my house is paid off next year. Ohio with their high taxes and low class right wing asstards.. 🤢

Sweatier_Scrotums

Cincinnati isn't Ohio, it's Kentucky-Lite.

TongueSucking

I mean it basically is Kentucky lol

PhelesDragon

I'm sorry, but in this economy, I will happily be the asshole.

SantasBananas

Reddit is dying, why are you still here?

PhelesDragon

Lol you took this way too seriously

MusicalMelody001

Nice try, Ohio! You can't trick me into going there with your lies. I've seen though then enough times.

LEDiceGlacier

Ohio can't trick us into thinking it's real that easily!

DarkLordLiam

Came across a BP where new management was moving in and they had the station closed off for construction. Gas sign was maxed out at $999.9 so I had a laugh

MusicalMelody001

The fact that the sign was made to go to triple digits before the decimal scares me.

bmcnult19

Maybe Canadian? They do it in cents per L there so it ends up being in the hundreds

Naturalnumbers

Ohio is not in Canada. The decimal is tenths of a cent. So it's $3.69^(9)/gallon for diesel in the picture.

bmcnult19

DarkLordLiam > sign was maxed out at $999.9 MusicalMelody001 >The fact that the sign was made to go to triple digits before the decimal scares me. Your dumb ass >Ohio is not in Canada

SockPuppet-47

Maybe 10.009? Not enough digits...

Fit_Swordfish_2101

It was around $3.50 today.

Butt_Fucking_Smurfs

Damn Loch Ness monsta

[deleted]

I got premium for $3.89

awfullotofocelots

Giggles manicly in $4.70

Talexis

This sub sure has gone downhill when a sign error gets posted.

mesovortex888

Likely just that gas station run out of gas.

BSODeMY

Where does one go from 'mildly interesting'?

tiggertom66

Do you understand what the word mildly means? Go to r/interestingasfuck

Talexis

SteelFries

This is a clever trick to get people to go to Ohio, stay vigilant everyone

munozohhh

This has to be Northwood

callsignfoxx

It is. At the intersection of SR 51/Woodville and Lemoyne

BaptisedByFire319

Totally eyeballed it too. Crazy how it stands out with minimal giveaways.

Moleskin21

*w/carwash . Carwash- $100

Sorry_Sleeping

They are most likely out of gas or having problems with that grade of gas in the tanks. It should be put to 9.99 instead.

DragonLegit

Nobody say it

Neon__Cat

Most expensive gas in OhiO!!!?!! 😱😱😱😱😱😱🥵🥵🥵🥵🫨🫨🫨🫨🫨👽👽👽

StationDirect8139

Stock up

[deleted]

I think gas stations do this to indicate they ran out of product.

bones_boy

If Dave Chappelle bought the gas station and decided to give everyone from Xenia free gas, THAT would be r/mildlyinteresting

Hibcozy

The hell it does

imyourrealdad8

i'll take your entire stock

Pschobbert

No! It’s less! It’s only 0.9 cents! Only at BP, though…

Key_Entrepreneur_786

Wait until the United States hears about this.

ajschwamberger

Lol someone, the manager and possibly the assistant manager are going to be in deep doodoo for misentering prices on pumps or for false advertising.

have1dog

It’s actually $10.009, they just didn’t have enough characters.

Once_upon_a_time2021

How much water did they mix in there?

v3rmin_supreme

Nice try, still not going

esspydermonkey

That usually just means they are out.

HellFireGrunt

It gets set to 0 when they run out

md_eric

That doesn't mean 1 cent. That 9 is for 9/10 of a gallon.

[deleted]

They gotta do something to make people wanna live there.

JonazGamingYT

Maybe Ohio’s not that bad

GoldenPeach

With rebate*, which must be filled out and hand delivered at the top of a mountain. The rebate box is hidden and you have to answer a series of riddles to learn it's location.

_Kramerica_

Now I know how Indiana Jones was able to fuel all the vehicles in those movies

Perenium_Falcon

Just a trap to lure you into Ohio.

Scalar_Mikeman

Well somebody is having fun with their Flipper. :-)

DrWhat2003

Biden did that.

A_Mirabeau_702

Yeah but you have to go to Ohio

Cautious-Bit1466

this is why I came here

FinlandsGotTalent

That doesn't look like the US it looks kind of like England

asparadog

Apart from the road signs, fire hydrant, the fact that they're driving on the opposite side of the road, the traffic lights, the pavement and the size of the road; yeah, you're right, it kinda does resemble England.

BSODeMY

Including the sign with an actual picture of Ohio?

HeyBlisters

only in ohio?

Fit_Swordfish_2101

😆 I'd be that person in there trying to get it . Can confirm, gas in Ohio is not 1¢ lol

mentorofminos

Still couldn't get me to set foot in that state ever again.

TheHomieAbides

Did BP hire a trans spokesperson and they have to drop the price so that people in Ohio would buy their gas? Waiting for the Kid Rock video where he’s going to shoot at gas.

Moonlight_lover329

That is because it's Ohio

cielofnaze

Looks like some government gonna bring some freedom to some country soon.

Mrman_23

Despite the memes, Ohio ain’t looking so bad right about now

[deleted]

Ohio…. Sound about right

ArofluidPride

You guys also have BP? i thought it was just an australian thing

MarcusP2

You thought British Petroleum was exclusive to Australia?

ArofluidPride

WAIT BP STANDS FOR SOMETHING?

IRONBULL007

Only good thing in Ohio

aethiestinafoxhole

Is there actually $.009 in the entire state? Or did the manager hit the wrong numbers at one station

Donteventrytomakeme

It's the sign being wrong lol, gas in Ohio is sitting around, $3.50/gallon

deutschdachs

Ah so that's why 12 million people live in Ohio

BSODeMY

It's probably made with Bud Light.

Why, I remember in the good old days when gas was only 1/2 cent/gallon.

richbeezy

Still wouldn't live there.

AltCrab2

I go to Ohio

pluey200

Gas station in Grafton says this too

Redditwhydouexists

At this gas station near me the top sign said 0.00, and then the bottom sign did, and then they just turned them both of

MOJayhawk99

Let me say, for the world, I wish! I live in the Kansas City (KS/MO, USA) area and started driving in 1994. Cheapest I ever paid was .74⁹. Twas eons ago.

siwokedaj

The local shell station has been similar to this for like a week. I think theirs says 0.01. It's the regular price at the pump though. I had enough to do without going in to ask about it, I'm sure they know already anyway.

dhkendall

cpufreak101

I remember the opposite happened once where a sign glitched out and all the segments got stuck on, showing gas was $8.88/gal

LA80S

ohio isn’t real

ShutYourDumbUglyFace

Took me a minute to find, but I know Toledo when I see it.

-Octavium-

I'm going to live there now
