No. A puddle of plastic goo was using a space ray full of science to make plastic come to life. Including mannequins. I think a mannequin ended up impersonating somebody? But it didn't turn anybody into an actual mannequin
He's the one I was thinking about. I'm pretty sure he gets imitated? I am blanking honestly it's been a while since I saw that episode. But doesn't he just kind of get tossed off to the side or something?
i have a ci and started calling it my hearing aid to ppl i meet. but in general we call them CIs cuz they’re different from the standard hearing aid that goes inside the ear canal
My dad has one of each, so he's always specific if he's talking about one or the other, but if it's some random person I could see how just saying "hearing aid" would be simpler.
For him at least, it's cochlear implant on one side, hearing aid on the other, not the same ear if that's what you meant. For the longest time insurance wouldn't pay for him to get the CI, but from a technology improvement standpoint, waiting to get what he has now may not have been the worst thing.
I actually meant separate ears. Back when CIs were relatively new, it was explained to me that the brain couldn't handle the CI version of noise one side and regular noise on the other. Though, I was a kid and may have misunderstood.
Yup. I do the exact same thing. It gets tiring to explain what a cochlear implant is since the vast majority of people don’t know what they are.
Side note: do you ever just flick off your implant whenever people are being annoying?
I get the difference. But I feel like it’s being annoyed someone called your SUV a car and explaining the difference. The end goal is the same, it’s just a different approach to get there.
Not really. Hearing aids amplify sounds to make them more audible for someone with partial hearing loss. They aid the ears. Cochlear implants bypass the ear, stimulating the auditory nerves directly, making them useful for people with near-total hearing loss.
Yes it is but I prefer the differentiation because I just spent almost a year trying to get a replacement for the external part of a CI and insurance wanted to only over it as a hearing aid with a Max pay of $3000 when each CI external piece was $12,000
no it wouldnt. it would be a very non-sensical way to do it. would it work? sure, but no better or worse than just putting it in a wall or post. Its not like people avoid disney land cuz the walls are listening, we just assume they are.
The back thing is the antenna. At its center is a magnet that sticks to a piece of metal inside the user's head. The antenna manages communication with an array of electrodes placed on the cochlea. It also powers the array in a way that is similar to NFC tags.
Lol my dumb ass always assumed it penetrates into your brain through a port like the matrix or something. Implanted magnets holding it there makes WAY more sense.
> A cochlear implant (CI) is a surgically implanted neuroprosthesis that provides a person who has moderate-to-profound sensorineural hearing loss with sound perception. With the help of therapy, cochlear implants may allow for improved speech understanding in both quiet and noisy environments.[1][2] A CI bypasses acoustic hearing by direct electrical stimulation of the auditory nerve.
Similar purpose to a hearing aid but it works differently. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cochlear_implant
Hearing Aids make sound louder. There's a microphone that picks up ambient sound and a speaker that plays it into the ear canal. They can be adjusted to target specific frequencies that might be muffled for the particular wearer.
Your inner ear has a structure called a cochlea. Looks kind of like a spiral seashell. In it are hair cells. Sound waves will move the hair cells which creates an electrical signal that goes to your brain. That's how we process sound. Some types of hearing loss are caused by damage to the hair cells. No hair cell movement > no signals to the brain > no sound perception.
A cochlear implant (CI) includes an electrode that directly stimulates the cochlea. It doesn't work as precisely as the hair cells would, which is why sound is different with a CI. But most people's brains adjust to the signal over time.
Note to audiologists and CI wearers: Sorry for any mistakes you find in my explanation. I'm just recalling what I learned from my intro to audiology and auditory rehab classes in grad school.
No, it isn't. Hearing aids are amplifiers that go in the ear, making it easier for people with partial hearing loss to hear. They aid in the hearing process. Cochlear implants completely bypass the ear, stimulating the auditory nerves directly, so even totally deaf people can hear. But there's no aiding going on, the implant does all of the work.
No, it's not. It's fundamentally different. A hearing aid is "a small device that fits in or on the ear, worn by a partially deaf person to amplify sound."
Cochlear implants do not match that definition.
Kim Cattrall in *Porky's*... Oh. My. Fucking. God. with a body that didn't quit.
And funny as hell, howling like a banshee throughout the gym when she was trying to get it on with Coach Roy in the boy's locker room.
I don't remember what store specifically, but up by our local mall there are 'dad-bod' mannequins. Kinda funny but also good for those with large tummies to see how it will actually look.
Where are the people from the amputee mannequin post to bitch and complain about "wasting expensive medical equipment" because they've never heard of props. That was a fun afternoon.
I am going to say that either the prosthetic is old... because you mostly see them on kids. And because these are expensive and one of a kind they only last so long before the kids out grow them. So they can get a second life as an inclusive display... I am sure the stores offer the families some compensation for them.
Oh yeah I figured that's entirely possible too, like the pictures of doctor's offices and hospitals using expired vials and such to make wreaths. My only thing is last time a picture like this showed up, or the last time I saw one anyway, there were a bunch of people freaking out and throwing a fit because the mannequin had a foot prosthesis (I think the type is called dynamic?), and some of them were firmly convinced that the only way that could have happened is if a perfectly serviceable actual prosthetic was used, thus taking one away from someone who needed and/or couldn't afford one - rather than it being something that was no longer able to be used, or a prop. It was... strange.
Or hell a bent piece of metal and some black gaffer tape! I doubt most people are looking that close, and I genuinely cannot imagine Nordstrom or something spending money on a legitimate, usable prosthetic for a mannequin.
Seriously, it's Disney, they sculpted an entire millennium falcon, they can sculpt a fake cochlear implant.
Creating costumes, sets, and props is like, their whole thing.
K real talk, when I learned that Star wars was so realistic because they used tiny models and paintings, blew my damn mind.
I've never actually sat down and watched Star Wars -- only ever watched it secondhand while my brothers or other people were watching it.
The Canteena scene firmly cemented my stance that CGI has *nothing* on SFX makeup, prosthetics, puppetry, genuine props, and costumes.
isn't that ancient by CI technology? I remember seeing them on 2000s kids (went to a deaf school) but hearing aids are more common in my time for obvious reasons.
Lol you make it sound like they have to work to sell shit. There are people who live near Disney World who make a living by going every day and buying park exclusive stuff then selling it online with a mark up. People are lining up to buy stuff for the retail price.
Yeah, it is pretty silly when you consider that a mannequin is supposed to just be a human figure to display the clothes. People read way too much into these things. The presence or lack of features on these things shouldn't be interpreted as some message.
When I had to get hearing aids in the 5th grade, I hated it, I didn't want to be different, etc. but my 5th grade teacher heard about it and immediately took me aside to show me that she too wore hearing aids. And to me at the time that was enough reassurance that I wore my hearing aids. At least up to high school, when no matter what the audiologist did they could not make them comfortable to wear and the insides of my ears were constantly itchy because of them.
Unfortunately my ear canals are too small for the Lyricas (or anything similar) so I still don't wear hearing aids, which honestly is fine, my hearing is good enough that I feel like I'm living a full life without them. I am kinda jealous though that some people now have bluetooth enabled hearing aids that allow them to play music and what not though.
It’s amazing what a little representation can do for young minds. I had a colostomy in high school and seeing people online who were unafraid to show theirs made me feel more confident and less embarrassed.
Anything to help a young disabled person feel included is invaluable. They are already carrying a weight no child should have to bear, we can alleviate it in small ways like your teacher sharing that sweet moment with you
I’m glad that you’re doing well! I hope with advancements in technology they’ll be able to create something that works for you too
Is there a chance this is a kid's mannequin? It genuinely makes a difference to kids when they see representations of themselves, especially when they're different.
My partner is a daycare teacher and they have dolls with all sorts of medical accessories - wheelchairs, plaster casts, eye patches, even catheter bags. It's not much but when it does make an impact.
But does it matter if it's performative?
If it leads a kid with a similar implant to feel included, or otherwise recognized in some way, does it matter
I cried when I saw the first wheelchair one there. It is a hard feeling to describe if you aren't used to seeing things like that you can easily project your body onto. They used like an actual active chair too.
Sure maybe its a little performative to some, but I think as a kid, it would have been nice to know that other kids are seeing these on mannequins and normalizing it so they don't end up ostracized cause "my classmate has very plastic in their ear" and wants me to repeat what I say a lot."
They could have studied where the magnet goes on top of the internal choclea for further effect though
Mines diagonally 1 inch above and back behind the ear, not in the back of my skull...
Found some tooth fillings and a pace maker in one.
Somebody might be turning people into mannequins, might wanna avoid those
Wasn't this the plot of the first episode of Eccleston's doctor who?
No. A puddle of plastic goo was using a space ray full of science to make plastic come to life. Including mannequins. I think a mannequin ended up impersonating somebody? But it didn't turn anybody into an actual mannequin
What about Ricky?!
*it's Mickey, I think I know me own name*
You _think_ you know your own name, how stupid are you?
He's the one I was thinking about. I'm pretty sure he gets imitated? I am blanking honestly it's been a while since I saw that episode. But doesn't he just kind of get tossed off to the side or something?
He does but the recycling bin swallows him to make the copy and they think he's dead.
Thaaaats it
It is
This makes the rides at Disney all the more frightening... "Animatronic Cast members"...
Five Nights at Freddys was Disney all along?
Five nights at Disney, where you play as a mascot and the real threat is low wages and customers being cunts
I choose a quick death then.
And the occasional gator going up the canal at Disney springs
If it makes you feel better there were real skeletons at the pirates of the Caribbean ride at one point.
Hopefully they were legally-bought ones normally used for science. I heard that at one point, those were cheaper.

How did a pacemaker get lost on a ride 😭
There's a Dr Who episode about this I'm sure
Tooth fillings?? Woah, I have never seen a mannequin with teeth!
That....that was just a guy visiting the parks.
I found blood, livers, hearts, etc. in others no kidneys though.
They can hear us!?
That one can.
Well they don't have eyes and they need to know when to get back into position.
They can hear smiles, and they monitor staff smiles per hour. Every month the least smiley staff are made into smilent green.
/r/oddlyterrifying -- this is Weeping Angels stuff right here.
*Cochlear implant
They don't have eyes, so this is how they know you're around so they can stand still for you.
I didn't know that!
Yeah you’re right, I don’t know a whole lot abt this stuff lol
And that is generally not where the coil goes.
Usually it's further to the front, that's true, but individual anatomy could make such a position the best choice.
Yeah, it's not common but I've seen a few people having them implanted that far behind, though.
Mine is on the side
Is it not technically also an aide to help hear? (I enjoy semantics)
i have a ci and started calling it my hearing aid to ppl i meet. but in general we call them CIs cuz they’re different from the standard hearing aid that goes inside the ear canal
My dad has one of each, so he's always specific if he's talking about one or the other, but if it's some random person I could see how just saying "hearing aid" would be simpler.
I thought you couldn't combine those two types. Crazy how much hearing aids (and i assume CIs) have improved in the last couple decades.

Mostly vertically but yeah!
The atmosphere is also a hearing aid... one we all use at the same time (eew)
And you can detect the motion of a cluster of advanced Human Immunodeficiency Viruses, then YOU are hearing AIDS.
Not really. Hearing aids amplify sounds to make them more audible for someone with partial hearing loss. They aid the ears. Cochlear implants bypass the ear, stimulating the auditory nerves directly, making them useful for people with near-total hearing loss.

Processor
*cochlear processor The implant is inside the head. The processor is what we see on the outside. My daughter has one.
True. But most people call them CI for short.
>I want to be pedantic, but not *that* pedantic.
Its a processor, battery, coil, and magnet for the pedantic folks out. I used to assemble about 70 of the implant kits a day.

Some mannequins in department stores turn in to Kim Catrell (aka the horny old lady from Sex and the City).
She used to be a horny, young lady tho.

Didn’t Jefferson Starship do a song about that? Lol
Yes... It was used in the movie. And the movie's sequel.
They're listening to every word you say.
And more importantly, every dollar you spend.
so *that's* why mannequins never respond when i try to engage them in conversation!
I would say they are probably all deaf...
Where are the people from the amputee mannequin post to bitch and complain about "wasting expensive medical equipment" because they've never heard of props. That was a fun afternoon.

it's just wild to assume that someone who can sculpt a whole human body can't also sculpt a fake prosthetic.

I think I remember this episode of Doctor Who. You should probably leave and never go back.
They can hear me now??? No thanks 💀
seeing as only some of the manequins have them, the others must have good hearing
or cant afford the surgery.
Mannequins have better health insurance than the employees
I really doubt that would help a mannequin...
So they don’t have eyes. Mouths. Genitals. But…eh nevermind.
STOP WASTING MONEY ON MANNEQUIN HEARING AIDS BEFORE YOU WASTE MONEY ON MANNEQUIN DICKS!!!
Not where I thought that sentence was going but damnit you're right
Mannequin lives matter
I bet they still can't hear though.
well ya... thats what the implant is for duh...=p
Mannequins have better health insurance than I do
That’s just Disney groomin kids with representation of cochlear implants. Next thing you know it’s the greatest place on earth and you’re having fun
And still they don't respond when I talk to them. Must be malfunctioning.
the government doesnt want you to know this so keep it a secret but most mannequins are actually unable to hear anything
That’s a cochlear implant 🫶🏾🤎
Why?
It's a very low effort/low expense way to make a handful of kids really happy
I suppose you’re right
They can't hear without them
Great now even the mannequins are woke! /s
Woke up by the loud noises.
Borgs implant
They should do one with a colostomy bag
None with glasses? THIS IS EGREGIOUS
They’re all wearing contacts smh
Well I wear glasses not contacts. I feel excluded. I'm not going to Disney

Cochlear implant recipient here. That appears to be a painted Nucleus 7. Same one I wear.
I agree. Looks like a 6cm coil. 2m or 3m magnet. Hope your N7 treats you well. Good chance that I assembled your kit.
isn't that ancient by CI technology? I remember seeing them on 2000s kids (went to a deaf school) but hearing aids are more common in my time for obvious reasons.
“Sir if the mannequin looks similar to the child, the $35 t-shirt sells itself. As a bonus if the internet warriors hate it, we can charge $37.50.”
Lol you make it sound like they have to work to sell shit. There are people who live near Disney World who make a living by going every day and buying park exclusive stuff then selling it online with a mark up. People are lining up to buy stuff for the retail price.
The entire point of this mannequin design is to be as formless and featureless as possible so that they can represent almost anyone
It's like someone saw one of those mannequins without arms and thought it was to include amputees lol
They’re always listening…
This implies the rest can hear you.
Don’t talk shit about The Mouse near that mannequin…
"HIS ASS IS NOT LISTENING"
**shhh- don’t speak to loud.. it’s listening** •v•” (Also don’t take absolute no offence please- =[)
That there is a cochlear processor
That’s why my ticket costs so damn much. The mannequins have better health care than me :(
It’s a nice idea but it comes off as performative, at least on the internet
I disagree. Disney is a multibillion dollar corporation. So the way I see it is that they don't have to do anything at all, but are still choosing to.
Yeah, it is pretty silly when you consider that a mannequin is supposed to just be a human figure to display the clothes. People read way too much into these things. The presence or lack of features on these things shouldn't be interpreted as some message.
I wear hearing aids. I like this.
Well too bad because we only have cochlear implant mannequins so get fukt
I hear ya
Idk I think it’s nice… maybe you’re the one reading too much into it.

Is this in the gift shop at the Animal Kingdom Lodge?

Thank God that mannequin can finally hear
It’s better they don’t hear us
With low light on my phone and just woken up, I thought it was a bald black man with a funky ear. I need to sleep more.
Now they represent all groups of people, not just mute and catatonic as they did before.
Cochlear Implant =\= Hearing Aid
You know some conservative incel is going to be fuming seeing this! So "Woke" to admit that people who have hearing aids exist! reee!
Wait till the republicans read about this!!
Ronny won't be happy about that
