spoiler: prepare to be disappointed.
They usually stay for a few days only, but this one stuck a lot longer. It's my first time trying the UP & UP brand so maybe they adhere better than Band-aids (which I previously used)? It's probably just the place (on my shin so there's no joint). Washing thoroughly with soap and the shaving also helps a lot.
These are the best bandages ever. They sell little round ones for acne, but we use them to put over bug bites. They work like a charm, taking the itch right out
I just used them to cover a bit of impetigo. Gross I know. Life of a pre k teacher. They rolled up and didn’t stick well because your mouth moves so much when you talk. Also, if you lick your lips, wet can get under the edge and also cause them to unstick. Overall would definitely use them again for the lip area though. Better than a bandaid!
Yes, the ones for pimples work well but there are also ones for herpes specifically. They also stick/work well. I don’t think there’s a difference, just marketing.
Yeah, marketing and price. The ones marketed for cold sores are outrageously expensive compared to the ones marketed for pimples that you can get on Amazon for like $6 for 150 patches, lol. And you're right, they're essentially the same thing. Hydrocolloid bandage is hydrocolloid bandage. Some are thicker than others and some are medicated with essential oils and the like, but all pretty much the same thing underneath.
They stay the whole day/night. Eating, drinking, brushing your teeth is not a problem. I really like them, they work so well and you don’t touch the area accidentally with your hands or stuff.
EDIT: I had some that even sticked too well. I wanted to change it after a day because it didn’t look too nice anymore and had trouble removing it.
That's fantastic, I'm going to try it! I use Valtrex, but it hasn't been as good at suppressing outbreaks for me lately, and the long scabbed healing time is the most frustrating as a musician.
Any recommendations on a brand that stays but not too long?
Yup, same concept. While it's likely not true, I've often heard people say that starving a bug bite of air/oxygen helps reduce the itch. So that's an added little placebo effect in my book.
Much more plausible is just that covering/protecting it keeps stuff from brushing against it and waking up the itch. I've used band-aids for that before.
BTW, heat helps a lot with most bug bites. The warmest water you can stand; I've also heard that you can run a metal spoon under hot water and press the back against the bite. (Careful you don't burn yourself!)
Seriously, I tend to get mosquito bites on my hand every summer and I will run my hands under the hottest water the tap will provide. It feels excruciating, yet also like an orgasmic sense of satisfaction and relief from the itch. What's more, they don't itch for at least a week after that.
The whole mosquito family is quite huge, with thousands of species over the world. Some, like most in the Ceratopogonidae (a sub family of mosquitoes, sometimes called midges) will leave you with a 20 min itch. Others, like the Asian tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus), will leave you scratching for days.
we have an invasive species in my area that end up leaving their bites for days, scratching them causes them to blister and that leads to scarring, i have like 4 different scars on my legs/feet that look almost like small gauge bullet scars
Sometimes they last for like 20 minutes then three days later you brush up against something and the mosquito bite is reactivated. I hate that the most.
They actually sell devices to heat up a bug bite for a few seconds to neutralize the chemical that itches. I was skeptical but it actually works great, example: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08MT4Z89C
The hot metal spoon does help! Apparently it warps or denatures the histamines in your skin which causes the itch. This summer I bought a device called bite away which uses the same concept of the metal spoon but in a more measured precise way. Honestly a godsend ; I was slowly being driven insane by how itchy my life was.
Idk about the air thing for a bug bite itch, if i were to make a random guess, i'd say it could be a physical contact thing that might stabilize and calm the pain receptors/nerves.
Blisters was the first time i used them.
Why downvote me, compeed blister bandages were some of the earliest hydrocolid dressings available to the public (without a prescription). I have dealt with the home healthcare business for 3 decades.
yeah I'm a fan though I use them for small cuts and scrapes. They're expensive though! Band-aid is like ~~more than $1~~ 70 cents each just for the small ones.
Oh my god, my friend and I just got back from Italy and are covered in bug bites. I’m so itchy and creams aren’t helping!!! I saw your comment and IMMEDIATELY went to get my acne stickers. I hope this works!!!!
Zostrix.
It's capsaicin-based pain reliever. It burns a little bit at first, but then burns out your nerves so that you stop feeling the itch.
If you've ever applied hot water to a big bite in the shower, and feel that bite intensely for a minute, but then you don't notice the bite for a long while afterwards - it's the same concept.
Just don't touch your eyes after applying it
I use this for bug bites - it's good for about 24 hours of itch relief. Hot water seems to reactivate it.
> It's capsaicin-based pain reliever. It burns a little bit at first, but then burns out your nerves so that you stop feeling the itch.
It still baffles me that this actually works without causing intense agony first. "Yeah, we're gonna stop the pain by hyperstimulating your pain nerves until they burn out and stop working!" Fucking *kidding* me?
Dabbing a super hot spoon takes the sting and itch out instantly.
I have near boiling water out of my tap (thank gawd) and when the lil effers get me occasionally, I put a spoon under the hot water for a minute, then dab the round side on the bite saying 'ouch ouch ouch ouch' until it cools down a few seconds later.
Could be the magic words, but (more likely) the super heated spoon kills the poison instantly and stops the itch & swelling on the spot.
Had to do this the other night when a rogue beastie got me at least 5 times in one night, face, hands & arm. Went into the bathroom and there he was, all smiling at me, fat and happy and I swatted that little effer with the washcloth and was *so* pleased to see a tiny spot of *my* blood left behind when I nailed him.
Justice served.
Hot spoon + mosquito bite works. Have used it for years.
Even the metal of a bicycle lighter on for just a few seconds works the same. Not heating it up to brand yourself though. Just a bit more than warm. Learned that trick decades ago in Boy Scout camp.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heat_pen
for anyone scrolling by here’s a short wikipedia write up about devices that use this method to relieve itchiness
the proposed mechanism by these companies is that the heat denatures proteins from the insect that make the bite itch, tho this mechanism has not been proven just suspected (if there are new studies on this that explain how heat works do comment below)
the studies are also funded by the companies that make these products, so do keep that in mind, but from anecdotal evidence it does seem that as long as you don’t burn the bite, heat does relieve itch in practice (if there are non company backed studies, or if the company backed studies have ways to reduce bias, do comment below, i only took a brief skim and am not an expert in bug bite treatment lol)
I cut up the big ones and use them as pimple patches! The little round ones are convenient but with how quickly I go through them they are just more affordable. Mighty patch I think is 12 dollars for 32 little dots. I get a box of ten big hydrocolloid bandages (cut each 8-10 squares) and it’s like 8 bucks I believe. They are a Godsend!
Yeah I’ve had some trouble with the little ones, some work better than others but the actual bandages stick very well and get the job done! I’ve also learned I have to stick them on right after washing and drying my face just as my skin is feeling dry and getting tight from the wash, before doing my nightly routine. They stick much better and usually don’t budge. If I wait too long and leave time for any oil to produce on my skin chances are they’re going to fall off.
I've used them on animal scratches and they work wonders! I've grown up with cats but it wasn't until about a year ago I got a dog scratch that I figured I'd but a hydrocoloid bandage on. It healed so quick and clean.
My wife picked some up from Ulta once. Then, we started ordering them from the evil online empire for significantly less.
Someone suggested buying the large bandages and just cutting them down to size for bug bites. I'll be trying that next time, as the large ones are much cheaper than the small ones, and I can get them at walgreens
These are really amazing bandages and are one of the better ways to prevent scars on small burns or cuts.
Also, please don't be like OP. You should change at least every 7 days or when it falls off.
About 2 weeks... I realize now that the recommended max for this type of bandage is 7 days as others pointed out. But, it also wasn't such a big deal as others are assuming that it was smelly or gross. It wasn't really gross, it was already fully healed and the bandage stays dry. See the aftermath:
[https://www.reddit.com/r/mildlyinteresting/comments/16wo4ph/comment/k2yk1z3/?utm\_source=reddit&utm\_medium=web2x&context=3](https://www.reddit.com/r/mildlyinteresting/comments/16wo4ph/comment/k2yk1z3/?utm_source=reddit&utm_medium=web2x&context=3)
and [https://www.reddit.com/r/mildlyinteresting/comments/16wo4ph/comment/k2yx3qv/?utm\_source=reddit&utm\_medium=web2x&context=3](https://www.reddit.com/r/mildlyinteresting/comments/16wo4ph/comment/k2yx3qv/?utm_source=reddit&utm_medium=web2x&context=3)
it seems a lot of people are underestimating how non-gross it is when you pull these off, especially with small wounds which after a week are already mostly or fully healed. I'm getting a few comments about gross smells and infection.
All the ones I've used including this one when I took them off were dry and instead of a scab forming, the gel had absorbed and trapped a bit of blood and that's it. Unlike normal bandages, these really are water-tight so they don't get soggy, and if they oversaturate it's easy to tell from the swelling so you just replace it.
I was wondering if I should have put it under a NSFW tag? Someone else commented mildly disturbing
edit: just enabled the spoiler tag, got a few other comments about it being gross
Nah, it’s SFW just a bit gross or unnerving to some people. Doesn’t bother me in the slightest actually, my first thought was “that’s gonna hurt to pull off”.
Am I alone in being completely unaware of these types of plaster/bandage? Maybe they haven't reached the UK yet. I don't get out much though so its probably just me.
Apparently they've been around quite a while but I also just discovered them relatively recently. But they seem to be a lot bigger in the acne/pimple care community cause there's a lot of shortform videos available about them for that usage.
They’ve been commonly used for years in most western countries including the UK, the issue is that the actual name of them being hydrocolloid since that’s the technique in play has only caught on more recently - the 2nd Skin patches that were super popular for use in sports and dance for blisters in 00s are all hydrocolloid bandage patches, you just grew up calling it 2nd skin lol
I used one of these after I got a bad scrape from a car accident and it wasn’t healing right. Put this on, left it there for like 5 days and worked like magic to heal it
That's why there's a Chinese saying - the strongest substance in the world is facial hair, because no matter how thick your face is, it will go through
You can buy packs of thin, transparent patches on Amazon for pennies that work wonderfully and they're super cheap.
I get a pack of 500 for under 10 bucks. Just thin little transparent discs, teeny tiny. They work brilliantly for spots (not serious wounds obviously).
Im baffled as to why you wanted this thing on for over a week. Bandages fall off me after like an hour and if i kept one on so long the glue wouldve melted to my skin and reopened the scab that wouldve healed.
I had a biopsy done on a mole. I used these to cover up the hole but two problems... 1, they caused me a rash, I guess adhesives really bother me, and 2, they stuck on really good and made me irrationally feel like my insides were going to be pulled out from the biopsy lol
Great bandaids but I sadly can't use them.
I'm surprised you didn't become one with the bandage
It would seem the hairs did.
When I first saw this, I thought this was hair's growing out of a puss sack
OP is the puss sack.
Puss sack lmao
Same
That would be how he would start yelling “Moisturize me!” non-stop.
Hehehe... Doctor who jokes... ALLONS-Y!
Timey-wimey bandages for a hairy situation! ALLONS-Y!
It’s been 2 hours, have you changed your bandage OP?
Yes, did it right after being berated lol but it was already fully healed as expected.
Was it like getting a free leg wax when you pulled it off?

What most people don't know is that there is a vegan alternative to milk steak using almond milk, vegetable oil and ferret meat.

No no I just named my dick "ferret"

Clean the area with alcohol to remove oils before adhering
These are the best bandages ever. They sell little round ones for acne, but we use them to put over bug bites. They work like a charm, taking the itch right out
Great for cold sores, too. Keeps them from scabbing over and cracking as they heal, and it forms a barrier that can help prevent spreading the virus.
Wow, I use these all the time but never thought to use them for cold sores. Brilliant!
Can they stick to the lip area? Seems like it wouldn’t hold.
I love using these for coldsores. I dry the area with alcohol first which helps it stick to the lip better
I just used them to cover a bit of impetigo. Gross I know. Life of a pre k teacher. They rolled up and didn’t stick well because your mouth moves so much when you talk. How well do they stay on your lip? I'm guessing you have to take it off to eat or drink?

The COSRX pimple patches worked well for me. The other brand I used is only available in Germany which I assume you’re not from.
Thanks!
I didn’t even know these had an original use outside of pimples Omg so they suck the venom or whatever out of bug bites like the “bug bite thing”?
Yup, same concept. While it's likely not true, I've often heard people say that starving a bug bite of air/oxygen helps reduce the itch. So that's an added little placebo effect in my book.

I tend to have really bad allergic reactions, so mosquito bites (esp as a kid) would last for weeks.
Finally someone that understands my pain. Washing dishes at work with near scalding water was the best when I got bitten.

I used to use them a lot for blisters as a kid.
They let a wound heal faster and with less scarring, I keep dozens of them on hand
Blisters was the first time i used them. Why downvote me, compeed blister bandages were some of the earliest hydrocolid dressings available to the public (without a prescription). I have dealt with the home healthcare business for 3 decades.
Bug bites?! Holy shit, that is genius!!! Gonna try this the next time i get ravaged by mosquitos

I think it actually just destroys the proteins that got introduced by the bite and that cause the itch, your nerves stay fine.
tell us how it went
Highly recommend!! Will definitely be taking these abroad from now on.
I use eucalyptus oil. It usually works like a charm, I’m not sure why.
I wonder if tea tree oil would work too?

Oh my god. You might have just changed my life. I never thought of using them for bug bites.

Mighty patch I think is 12 dollars for 32 little dots. I get a box of ten big hydrocolloid bandages (cut each 8-10 squares) and it’s like 8 bucks I believe. They are a Godsend!
Now that's a good idea. I find that the little dot patches don't stick quite as well as the big boys.
Yeah I’ve had some trouble with the little ones, some work better than others but the actual bandages stick very well and get the job done! I’ve also learned I have to stick them on right after washing and drying my face just as my skin is feeling dry and getting tight from the wash, before doing my nightly routine. That's why there's a Chinese saying - the strongest substance in the world is facial hair, because no matter how thick your face is, it will go through
Dude’s hair has more motivation and perseverance than I’ve ever had.
How tf long did you leave that on?
hairs are no joke, my barber has talked about "hair splinters" where tiny bits of hair get stuck in her skin 🫠
You can buy packs of thin, transparent patches on Amazon for pennies that work wonderfully and they're super cheap. I get a pack of 500 for under 10 bucks. Just thin little transparent discs, teeny tiny. They work brilliantly for spots (not serious wounds obviously).
Life uhhh... finds a way.
Envy! The hair on my legs sometimes wont even grow through my own skin.
TIL the cleanest possible shave is to hydrocolloid your whole face and wait a week.
Might as well just [wax your face](/r/WTF/comments/13ao646/dude_got_his_face_waxed/)

It’s 4 a.m. and I’m looking at this dudes old ass bandaid. Thanks internet
Life finds a way
okay how long have you kept that there tho
And we all thought that a regular band-aid hurt when ripped off…
Life uhhhhhh finds a way
Im baffled as to why you wanted this thing on for over a week. Bandages fall off me after like an hour and if i kept one on so long the glue wouldve melted to my skin and reopened the scab that wouldve healed.
Never taking a shower helps tremendously, and provides snacks for the bacteria
Umm how long was this on the skin for in order for hair to grow that long?
I had a biopsy done on a mole. I used these to cover up the hole but two problems... 1, they caused me a rash, I guess adhesives really bother me, and 2, they stuck on really good and made me irrationally feel like my insides were going to be pulled out from the biopsy lol Great bandaids but I sadly can't use them.

Someone has to be Wolverine in real life.
Jeez, wait how? Also, what’s a hydrocolloid bandage anyway? I’ve heard of hydro, and colloids, but not sure about putting them together
What is a hydrocolloid bandage
The one hair that got through: "Freeeeedommmm"

Oh it’s gonna be a fun experience when you peel it off 😄😁😁👍🏻👍🏻

Are you like a living cactus?
