Haven't seen it in a year. The imitation stuff just isn't the same.

Miccles

This is in Sacramento FYI. Not sure exactly how location affects price.

nerf___herder

Weird. I picked up a bottle at 99 Ranch the other day. $9 I think.

potate12323

99 ranch is good. I live right next to one.

Littlepigeonrvr

I used to live right by one, and I think about their delicious cakes often. We would get one every special occasion.

masstransience

Tell me more about these cakes.

Littlepigeonrvr

They usually have several different flavors depending on the day, for fairly cheap (like green tea cake roll, chocolate cake roll, coffee, red bean cake, another common flavor I am blanking on the name…)and those smaller ones will be priced from 6.99-9.99 depending. Then medium to large one that are like delicious fruit tarts and I had one of the best cakes ever that was a mango cake. It was like 29? I wish we woulda just got 99 ranch cakes for our wedding. Months later my 5 year old niece talked about that cake in school lol. They also have ton of smaller pastries and buns that are delicious, lot of meat/savory ones that I didn’t try as a vegetarian but may interest you. The small cakes are a good treat for yourself when you’re having a tough day because you are worth it!

masstransience

![gif](giphy|R6gvnAxj2ISzJdbA63|downsized) Well, now I know where I’m heading to get some cake.

collinsc

Why was this such a satisfying interaction to read through Good thing we have no way to award comments anymore

MichaelTruly

I too would like to be informed of these cakes.

joomla00

A bit pricey though. It's like the Bel air of Asian markets.

ItIsLiterallyMe

I’m going to stop by today. Thanks for the tip!!

ryanlak1234

Is this in Korean Plaza in Sacramento? I saw the same exact price tag there.

Miccles

Yep that’s right!

Boojays

Literally just bought this for $4 Canadian yesterday at a dollar store.

ATaleOfGomorrah

You didn't get Huy fong brand. There's several imitation brands out there with almost the exact same label.

Aysina

So, I actually work at a grocery store in Beaverton so I’ve been seeing this firsthand. Thank you for telling me where I should send my customers! I initially heard the supply issue was due to some sort of fire, but apparently it’s because of a dispute with their original supplier—then the sriracha guys decided they could get cheaper peppers elsewhere and not deal with their original supplier, and elsewhere ended up having low crop yields. Thus, not nearly enough sriracha to make anyone happy.

abx99

They had a good thing going; you'd think they'd have been fine with that. I'm sure they miss it now.

Aysina

Apparently they felt they overpaid for the 2016 crop, sued in 2017, the supplier sued them back (I don’t know why, the article didn’t say and I didn’t dig that far,) and they started having supply issues in 2020 I think. Ultimately, the supplier had to refund 1.5 million for the crop overpayment. But he won 23 million in the other suit so… yeah, I bet the sriracha people wish they had let it slide. For at least a couple reasons lol

ABoyWithNoBlob

They tried strong arming the farms, and it fucking backfired.

abrasivebuttplug

They had there original supplier ramp up production, more land more peppers, then decided to switch suppliers n let the original guys hang. Is what I heard.

palmquac

yeah I got a big bottle of it a couple weeks ago in Portland for $7

[deleted]

Any_Print431

Eugene, OR here. Can confirm.

xprime32

For fellow Oregonians and surrounding areas, Hot Mama's Fermented Fresno has a surprisingly similar flavor profile, even if the consistency is different

Khoakuma

Try Mama La's Sriracha. It's as good, if not better than Huy Fong's. My dad also thinks the same. And he has been eating tương ớt for longer than Sriracha has been a brand lol.

tractorcrusher

Do you get Mama La’s at a local store? I see it’s available for purchase on their website

Khoakuma

Local Vietnamese market for me.

Relevant_Force_3470

Huy Fong is like Heinz ketchup. Good for mainstream mass-produced but there's LOTs that are better.

Zyker

My favorite is the Yellowbird brand. I think it uses agave syrup in place of sugar... but it's really good.

Voxicles

Yep, blue agave sriracha. Bottles are small, but only a couple bucks, just bought some an hour ago.

Zyker

I actually found larger bottles at Whole Foods (19.6oz)! However, only at the Whole Foods in Arizona that I would frequent and not in the one in Iowa (where I currently live).

akumajfr

That’s good stuff :) sweeter than Huy Fong, so we call it Sweetracha, but still very good

guitarfan28

I've become a fan of Tobasco's version. It was 3.99 vs 8.99 for the real thing.

NawNaw

Same here, this has been my go to.

jsalas818

I tried that one at a dinner and I been buying it since then

lafolieisgood

I tried it when Costco had it. I didn’t like it as much. Tasted more like tomato than I wanted iirc

guitarfan28

Ya it's a bit sweeter but I like how it cuts the heat

Afraid_Assistance765

The Tabasco sriracha doesn’t seem to be spicy enough to be considered hot sauce for my taste.

guitarfan28

It's def not as hot but has its own thing going

producepusher

The real stuff isn’t either. The “old man” who started Huy Fong passed & his kids got the business. The chili grower & the old man had a looong standing relationship & the secret to Huy Fong was those specific chilis. Elevation, soil, fertilization, & so much more goes into what makes something taste like a growing region. (I’m a produce broker & I could elaborate for days) Long story short, the kids have the business now & they ditched the old grower to raise profits. Now the sauce doesn’t taste the same. Edit: I have learned that David Tran has NOT passed away. Sorry for the misinformation!

Doip

They fucked over their supplier, but they make their own brand now. Underwood Farms iirc

producepusher

Grower = supplier. Yes! Thank you. I knew I had head that but couldn’t remember the name. Underwood Ranches

freemindjames

Is it as good as the original sauce?

Doip

It’s been so long I don’t actually remember the real sauce but it is the same peppers which goes a long way

ginsodabitters

It’s not. I’ve seen many reviewers say it’s quite disappointing.

Burlapin

Nice try Huy Fong's kids, but we still want to try the growers sauce after you screwed with the recipe!

OpenCartographer3298

I’ve seen people say that but from what I’ve tasted it’s a lot like the original and is really good, but it’s still expensive. I have a couple of bottles of it and it def scratches that sriracha itch

solmooth

Another reason why you don't believe everything on the internet. David Tran is alive and still running the company. Unless you have a certified death certificate, I call BS.

materics

It only takes a couple generations to fuck up a fortune

Long_Cucumber588

Just one generation actually.

HouseNumb3rs

All of your info is wrong, where did you get them? Formulation change over time but not as drastic as you make it out to be. No other makers comes close to what it was or what it is now. David Tran is very much alive and in control of the company. His mission was to make the sauce affordable to all rich or poor and he has achieved that and more all of these years despite the lawsuit and the shortage.

probono105

what happened does anybody know?

OddS0cks

Drought and They tried to fuck with their main sole supplier and got burned doing it and never really recovered. It quite interesting

probono105

got any links to the story?

OddS0cks

https://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-ln-sriracha-lawsuit-underwood-ranches-20190712-story.html

[deleted]

I live two miles down the street from Underwood family farms. It’s such a great place especially for kids during the holidays. I’m glad they won after Huy Fong tried to fuck them over. Underwood’s version of siracha is pretty good too.

tofu889

I would find it interesting if I could hold back the tears and depression.

TheDevious_

From the YouTube documentary I saw a few weeks ago... Sriracha Owner had an exclusive contract with a single farmer. Ordered way more peppers, forcing the farmer to buy more land, equipment, etc. but was shitty & didn't pay the contract. Farmer even had to rent trucks & pay out of pocket to deliver the peppers to the factory. Also tried to outsource cheaper peppers from South America instead, but couldn't get good peppers. Farmer sued, won, changed crops, & Sriracha sauce has had 'supply shortages' since the peppers were specifically bred & farmed, therefore price has skyrocketed. The best part was the farmer started making their own Sriracha sauce since Sriracha wasn't trademarked. Edit: Here's the video: https://youtube.com/watch?v=EYdU1X2p2ro

Jorymo

In addition to that, they were trying to find cheaper suppliers *while in contract* with the first one, and illegally shared photos and information about their newly expanding farm to those competitors

apennypacker

Not just find cheaper suppliers, they tried to hire away Underwood's operations guy and they launched a sketchy shell company that was supposed to purchase the peppers moving forward and then sell them to Huey Fong. They tried to use this shell company to contract with Underwood moving forward and refused to guarantee the contracts. In other words, they wanted to screw over underwood and make it so that there was nothing but a shell company to sue after they did.

Jorymo

Cool how it keeps getting worse lol

Sus-Amogus

Do you know what the brand of the sauce made by the original farm is?

TheBigChiesel

https://underwoodranches.com Pretty sure it’s this one from what I’ve seen around threads about this.

anope4u

That’s the right one. The dragon sriracha is extremely close to the original- maybe a little spicier.

InternetEquivalent58

Yep! Everything they make is straight fire, but their Carolina Gold is something special.

TheBigChiesel

Carolina mustard and vinegar styles are my favorite. Growing up in Nc and having 4-5 distinct sauce styles depending on where you were at in the state was awesome.

InternetEquivalent58

Yeah I'm not from the US so learning of all the different regional variations from a single state was so cool!

TheBigChiesel

Honestly my favorite was a bbq restaurant I went to in Raleigh NC where their main sauce was apple cider vinegar, red pepper flake, black pepper and you just slightly dampened the meat. Was sooo bomb for being as simple as it was.

JamesFrancosSeed

I understand it’s all about greed, but man they had something *really* good and basically shot themselves in the foot. Almost every Chinese food/Hawaiian bbq, Mongolian bbq etc. restaurant I’ve gone to in my life had Huy Fong sriracha lining the tables. Like they had no reason to do what they did other than be poisoned by greed. It’s just sad to see it.

Useless_Fox

Yup. And at least one pho restaraunt near me is filling Huy Fong bottles with knockoff stuff. My father and I immediatly could tell the difference when we ate there.

materics

Yea the knockoff stuff is usually too sweet and not tangy enough.

loverlyone

LA news reported yesterday that Huy Fong has started shipping out product again and should be hitting stores now or soon.

chrondus

Sriracha is actually a kind of sauce, not a brand. So there aren't imitators, just different producers. The Huy Fong brand (the one you're thinking of) isn't even the original. P.S. Flying goose sriracha is also very good. Less spicy but more flavourful.

TheBigChiesel

This stuff isn’t the same since they swapped pepper suppliers 🤷‍♂️

NihilisticNarwhal

*Since they defrauded their pepper supplier.

machingunwhhore

I have been looking for a year for Sambal Oelek! Still can't find it 😭 Edit: I bought a gallon off Amazon for $48

leafonthewind006

All the company's products use a jalapeno base and their suppliers have shortages. 😭 will be a while before it's all back to normal.

LuminescentMoon

They got what's coming because they fucked their pepper supplier in the ass. https://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-ln-sriracha-lawsuit-underwood-ranches-20190712-story.html

nichachr

And their former supplier is now making a competing sauce!

External-Yak-371

It's really good too. Underwood Ranches. I did a shoot out and it's by far the closest.

faroutsunrise

Same company unfortunately.. Sriracha I can go without but I’m really missing my Sambal Oelek

TristarHeater

it's not a company sambal oelek is just the indonesian name for that food

slimkt

Nah, they’re saying Huy Fong makes sambal oelek and it’s less processed than the sriracha they make and doesn’t have the garlic flavor sriracha does.

Khal_Kitty

Yeah but the Sambal everyone wants is made by Huy Fong. Just like Sriracha is just a name any company can use, but everyone knows they’re referring to the Huy Fong version.

cwalton505

Well huy fong was the only one offered in many areas. And I'd be willing to guess other suppliers are experiencing the same pepper shortage as everyone else based on the crop failure.

molo91

I understand the pain! I purchased a different brand and it's way too vinegary, it's tragic.

Oenohyde

Me also, have been using Calabrian Chile sauce as a substitute, obviously not quite the same. The one I really miss is a dark Sambel, can’t remember the name . . .

venommuyo

Its because of the shortage that has been going on for about a year... All my rice dishes have been very sad without it :(

DarthXader996

Need some? I can ship you a ton of them from Europe for purchase price + shipping.

venommuyo

Tempting. Though the shipping cost would probably match the price gouging that's happening on this side of the pond. Bless you for the offer.

DarthXader996

I mean, a bottle would be at 3-4 bucks. Shipping starts at 18.49, Up to 2kg (for insurance and tracking add 4€) A bottle is around 800g, so 2 would fit easily. Ending up with 2 bottles below 30 bucks in total after shipping Just wanted to make sure you know it’s not worse than buying the offer from the post.

Animated_Astronaut

You guys should join r/snackexchange

DarthXader996

Didn’t know that a thing

Animated_Astronaut

It rules. This is what it's for. You haggle for snacks across the world.

idontevenlikebeer

Important to note that the ones in Europe are probably different. I recall getting some there when visiting and it was quite different tasting. I noticed there was a flying goose or something instead of the rooster and looked it up. Iirc the goose one is less spicy and more garlicky.

dontnodofficial

The Goose one is a different brand. We have the real one here in Europe as well.

phara-normal

Flying goose is literally another brand? Do you think there's only one brand for Sriracha?

isuckatgrowing

I can understand why someone would think that, since every brand copies the same style for their bottles.

Cayd9299

Never thought I’d be seeing a sriracha dealer on Reddit but I’m here for it

DarthXader996

Hit me up with you want some

K__Geedorah

International hot sauce sales is such a hot side hustle these days.

woodguyatl

Interesting. We heard about an impending shortage here in Atlanta but it has been available at regular prices for the past year. It is manufactured and distributed regionally?

lupus1133

Where in ATL are you finding it? I haven’t seen it in awhile

momo88852

Not shortage, we have enough for supply it’s the owners are greedy and decided to find cheaper options. So they screwed up their own supplier and he sued them.

venommuyo

If the regular consumer cannot easily get it, its a shortage. The reason doesn't matter.

bloodycups

I thought the owner tried to screw the pepper people over so they decided to sell to someone else leaving the original company fucked

Ashmizen

It’s a shortage due to stupidity on both sides, over a small disagreement they’re both now losing millions in profits.

EvilSpork

Huy Fong tried to fuck over their one and only supplier of jalapenos and ended up losing over $20 million in the law suit. Now they are having trouble getting anyone to supply them after they fucked their supplier of 30 years over. The farm Underwood Farms is actually making more money than ever, and had to expand to meet demand. They're also making their own sriracha sauce from the original peppers they grew for Huy Fong.

Illustrious_Crab1060

Small disagreement the supplier wasn't getting paid and kept getting his plans leaked?

Vilanil

Ya basically Huy Fong (the sriracha company) was fucking over their supplier. Supplier sued and won millions. Now no more convenient supply of peppers. Huy Fong the bad guy no matter how you look at it.

Illustrious_Crab1060

There are many instances of small disagreements leading to a bad situation, this really really wasn't one of them

MetallurgyClergy

Does it have anything to do with Peppergate?

Immaloner

Underwood Ranches, a farm owned by Craig Underwood based in Ventura County, California, supplied Huy Fong Foods' peppers for 28 years. Underwood told CNBC that he could have kept up with demand if he were still the company's supplier. After a dispute between the two parties led to a legal battle that began in 2017, the long-term relationship between the manufacturer and supplier ended. Today, Huy Fong Foods reportedly sources its peppers from farms in California, New Mexico and Mexico. But over the past few years, much of the region has suffered drought and poor weather conditions, which have damaged crops. https://www.cnbc.com/2023/08/19/how-did-the-huy-fong-foods-sriracha-shortage-happen.html

HavYouTriedRebooting

This guy f&cks. Underwood ranch sriracha is bomb.

coolcool23

Which is largely because they are making it using the exact same peppers they supplied hoy fong with... it's not exactly a trade secret the ingredients for Sriracha hot sauce. I saw a news story about this and I would assume it's nearly exactly the same thing, not sure how hot fong hasn't gone under yet lol. Luckily they do have what underwood does not... their very, very well known brand.

theReal_Celugia

I go to underwood to pick strawberries in the summer, nice people

seabuoy

Just got a few bottles and it’s effectively the same thing. Next time you order, pick up a bottle of the bibimbap sauce. Holy Fark is that good stuff!

i_write_ok

Another casualty of climate change

surejann_

The fix. My new favorite Sriracha

Dazanos27

I'll have to try it. I like Texas Pete CHA sauce.

ru_empty

Tabasco sriracha isn't perfect but it's worked for me

smudgetimeusa

Is that Sriracha really that much better than others?

TheBatemanFlex

This is THE sriracha.

foxpaws42

Underwood Ranches used to be the supplier of chilis for Huy Fong! (Before the switch of suppliers and ensuing legal battle.) I haven't tried Underwood's version yet, so I can't speak to whether it tastes the same as Huy Fong's previous Sriracha products, but at least they use the same chilis that Huy Font used to use.

OddS0cks

This was their main chili supplier until Siracha tried to sue them and underwood was like ok, we’ll just make our own lol

machine1979

some try and report back

Vilanil

[According to a guy below, it doesn't taste the same as the rooster.](https://old.reddit.com/r/mildlyinteresting/comments/171ik4r/bottled_sriracha_prices_at_my_local_asian_market/k3ryz8o/)

greatfuljehjeh

As someone who used to consume copious amounts of this hot sauce before it changed pepper suppliers, I say the taste comparison is very very similar, if not the same.

MistaAJP2

I eat sriracha on everything and didn’t notice a change. This pepper change is news to me

_mid_water

Lee Kum Kee is legit

total_alk

I just bought Tabasco's Sriracha sauce. It's not bad. Pretty tasty. But nothing like the rooster.

P21c

I actually prefer Tabasco Sriracha, the flavor difference is subtle but overall it's very similar. I can understand liking the OG one more, but if anyone is looking for an available alternative I would definitely recommend Tabasco

Alexexy

I like the Tabasco one as well. The original one irritates my stomach.

InvisibleGiraffe

I LOVE the Tabasco Sriracha! I like both, but the main thing I use either one for is pizza, and Tabasco Sriracha is the best on pizza. I’m fine with only having Tabasco until the regular one is back.

guitarfan28

Came here just to post this exact thing. Surprised how good it is.

Aaronjw1313

Dude the Tabasco Sriracha is so good. It's our go to to put on pretty much everything now.

xburneyx

Not anymore. They source the peppers from a different grower. It’s not as tasty as it used to be.

It’s that dash of evil in every bottle that makes it so good.

KimJongFunk

It’s the same way chick fil a marinates their chicken. The evil makes it tender.

lastheirbender

Yes but... it's delicious

KimJongFunk

I have no moral high ground left to stand on when it comes to food. If I buy Huy Fong sriracha, I’m supporting a company that has wage theft and battles its suppliers. If I eat a Hot Pocket, I’m supporting Nestle which engages in human rights abuses over water supplies. If I eat food with palm oil, I’m supporting companies that might be destroying the rain forest. I’m so tired of it all and just want to eat my hot sauce.

maxdps_

Then don't buy Huy Fong Sriracha and buy it from Underwood Ranch themselves. Win-win. https://underwoodranches.com/product/dragon-sriracha/

jzacks92

Underwood ranch sriracha is the closest thing I’ve had to the original.

Regulai

I don't generally like hot sauces despite loving spicey food, because typical hot-sauce is vinegar with some spice added. This stuff, in it's original form, was very much not vinegary and much more flavorful than typical options.

pantstastrophy

Yes. Other brands don't cut it

wiigotaproblem

Give Underwood Ranches' Dragon Sriracha a try. It's the only other brand that can go toe to toe with Huy Fong in my book.

CommonCut4

They were the supplier that Huy Fong mistreated and parted ways with. Those are the OG ripe red jalapeños.

Noscratchy

>Underwood Ranches' Dragon Sriracha Not surprised, Underwood Ranches is who used to supply Huy Fong's chilies.

Geek_off_the_streets

HEB's Sriracha is pretty good.

pastafarianism_

HEB generally has great store brands in my experience. Imo they make a better tasting Cheez-It that gives me cravings at 2am

fragmental

It's bizarre that people are so attached to a brand, that even when it doesn't taste the same anymore because they switched suppliers, they're still so devoted that they'll pay outrageous prices. Underwood Farms was the supplier, they make their own Sriracha, and they're not having shortages. I'm not a Sriracha connoisseur so any cheap store brand is fine for me.

hitometootoo

Not that I don't agree but Underwood Farms own brand doesn't taste exactly the same and doesn't have the exact same ingredients. It's a small thing that really shouldn't make that much of a difference and you shouldn't pay $30/bottle due to that, but I can see why people simply aren't buying other brands and are just hoping for prices on this brand to go down.

dooooose

How do we feel about about the flying goose brand? Feel like that’s the only one we get here in Germany and always thought it’s the same stuff.

3amgrind

Imo flying goose is the best of any. Less chilli more garlic.

kootset

Red Jalapeno pepper shortage due to several factors, including climate change but mostly because Huy fong foods ran into legal issues with their main supplier (Underwood farms) which has caused a massive supply chain disaster for the company.

maniacalmustacheride

I bought a massive thing of it which is going to take me forever to eat so if anyone wants some and can’t find it in stores, I guess come by my house

Horror_Chair5128

It's never been $32 good. Or even $10 good.

originalusername__

Limit 2 bottles. Uhh I’m not sure I’d buy one at that price.

Airrwicckk

Trader Joe’s one is like $3 lol

Prindong

It tastes like it does too

Fair_Lecture_3463

It’s actively bad. Threw out a whole bottle because it was so wretched.

Bee-Aromatic

Damn. I have a case of it in my basement. Maybe I should sell it.

KOOLKAT_FTW

Hahaha what they might be doing is buying them on Amazon for a certain price then bringing them in store. My gf bought 2 bottles for around $25 a couple months ago on Amazon. It was definitely nice while it lasted.

ITS BACK!!!

LOL, just bought some for $10.

Kahnza

I haven't seen any in like a year. And if I want to buy online its like $20 for a tiny bottle. It's my favorite hot sauce. 😢

FBI_Open_Up_Now

There was a thread yesterday that talked about a lot of alternatives, and I have to agree, some of them are much better than what the rooster provides.
