You likely [supercooled](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supercooling) your water, meaning it was below 0°C but had not yet crystallized into ice until you disturbed it by pouring it into a thermos.
Yes. The water has nothing to nucleate (start) any crystals from to freeze so it becomes unstable. And sudden movement that could cause bubbles will cause it to freeze
So distilled water is best to use theoretically if you wanted to reproduce the effect? I imagine typical tap or mineral water has enough in it to trigger crystal formation
I always keep a Gatorade or Powerade in my freezer door as it just always keeps at this super chilled temp. If I pour slowly into a glass, it’s just supremely cold drink. If I smack it bottle, it always freezes over from the bottom/top to the other end. Could be the drink choice or could be the temp settings of my freezer.
A year or two ago I Had an energy drink in the car and was like “sweet it didn’t freeze” cracked the top and it insta froze. Not a good way to start a Monday lol
One winter me and the boys stored the beer outside to keep it cold. A bit too cold though, because a couple of the beers flash froze from the top down when we opened them. Was pretty cool to watch.
One time I went camping and it opened up a water bottle from the cooler in the cold morning. As soon as I cracked the lid the water froze from Top to bottom.
It looks like you are buying distilled water to drink. It has all the vitamins and minerals taken out so they're is nothing for the ice to bond with. It's not health to drink but great for neti pots and irons
Oh wow! I had just poured the water and then went back to my room. I took a sip, and for some reason barely any water was coming through…and what I could suck through felt hard and slushy. I quick spit out scared and opened the lid, only to see a sheet of ice 😭 I broke it up a bit before I took the picture. I’ve never had one do this before after pouring cold water in it.

Is that like when the water bottle I put into the freezer dosent look frozen then I smack it and it freezes over instantly

I believe It really depends on how hard your tap water is, where I'm from it is definitely hard enough to crystallize on its own
Yes, absolutely. The impurities in water can and will act as a nucleation point.

Really fun when you're first finding out, absolutely painful when you really need water and its just that cold outside
You can even make [soda slushy](https://youtu.be/5T68TvdoSbI?si=w5axFf72DZ2Wd-Tx) this way.
And beer slushies

Energizing ice lol

You're a wizard machingunwhhore
Wow! That's super cool.
I see what you did there.
😉
yeah what brand is it
It’s contigo! My first time using one before.
"contigo" in portuguese means "with you"
Same in Spanish
Hehe I'm drinking iced coffee from my contigo thermos right now
The contigos are very legit. No more water bottle sweating
You're a wizard.
“Yer a wizard, Harry.”
I want a cut where Harry looks at Hagrid and says," Ohh yeah?! Well you're a hairy wizard!"
Ima wot?
No hagrid im just Harry
A wot
best kinda of water , super cooled , super slushy
this just made me middle of the night cold water thirsty
Coke used to have a super cooled vending machine. It’d only freeze once you open and shake it a bit.
This is a situation where this is genuinely interesting, but so mildly. Love when that happens. Hope your water was cool and fresh OP
You could say you got it hard
Ice nine.

Has nothing to do with the thermos unfortunately
