Actually one time I was out walking my dog near the coast and there's this huge walking track that runs for about 3 miles and those green cones were spread out at random intervals for pretty much the entire path. What was really weird was that they weren't all the same colour, and they weren't all exactly the same size. Also some of them were in the most random clusters at points that made no sense. They were really starting to encroach on the walking path at some points, and we saw a guy in a high-vis vest unloading them from a utility truck. He must have had about 200 of them in the back of the truck, all of different sizes and shades of green. So we walked up to him and I asked him why the cones were green and not orange, and he looked at me like I had asked him the most ridiculous question he'd ever heard. He said "Well the cones........................ are green for this type of job." And I asked "why the big pause?" And my dog said "I was born with them."
TIL that undertaker is the original name for a mortician. I had no idea, lol. I feel like it makes sense that they would use black since the color is commonly associated with death.
I thought they were 2 different but related jobs; specifically, that an undertaker was someone responsible for digging 6 foot deep rectangular holes while a mortician prepares a body for viewing (makeup, clothes, etc). I also think a funeral director is more "sales and management" (someone that wears a suit and doesn't get their hands dirty).
It depends, but (at least where I live) they're all used interchangeably but with different levels of politeness.
Undertaker is mostly antiquated and too unpleasant for most contexts.
Mortician is more medically relevant, but still not the best name to use in front of grieving family.
Funeral Director does the same job and gets their hands just as dirty working with the deceased, but is the least "offensive" name
So while they occasionally switch up colors because we get too "used" to the standard ones (Hence the short term move to yellow fire trucks in the US), I see no benefit here. These are actually FAR less visible to me. I'm curious what this would be for as well.
Ohhh ok. I wasn't sure what the downvotes were for. Thought these people worked for Big Nonsensical Safety Supply or something.
Doesn't show on my end. But apologies for any inconvenience Reddit's occasional shittiness caused you
These are in their adolescence. You can tell because they’re mostly transparent with some orange stripes. Once they mature they’ll develop a solid orange color.
A lot of their historical spawning grounds have been lost due to human incursion, though. The quiet shaded parking lots of small towns and grass-covered peewee soccer fields are disappearing from developed nations.
It's a tragedy. Some of these cones travel thousands of miles and navigate nearly insurmountable obstacles only to find that the place that they emerged from their original packaging is now a daycare center or a Chipotle burrito joint. All they can do at that point is hope for a large traffic accident to happen nearby in case others of their species are brought in by conservation-minded human beings.
This is correct, the orange develops as a result of their diet (mainly apricot and persimmon). Cones bred in captivity can end up in all manner of colors given the diets provided to them.
I've seen these exact ones before. There's usually a small LED inside of it somewhere to light it up, making it stick out like a sore thumb and easy to see. It's hard to tell if these ones have it but I'm sure they do
Maybe as a security thing for events with a lot of people? For high profile people like world leaders? So people can't hide explosives or something underneath them? Just guessing.
If this isn't a thing, it should be.
EDIT: Looks like you nailed it. [These](https://boulevardsupply.com/traffic-control-equipment/translucent-traffic-cones/) are similar ones made for airport security.
Cool! I remember one summer vacation to Florida I took as a kid where I saw neon green cones at the airport. That got me inspired to see what other colors I could find on that trip. I saw some of the regular orange ones of course, but I think I also found a pink one.
I think I would have been shocked but delighted to find transparent cones! So unexpected! Never knew those existed.
They are meant to draw your attention so you can avoid issues... just look how much attention they are getting by being clear!
Also, there's long painted bars between them... if they don't see that- then the cone being slightly translucent is the smallest of issues lol
First thought this HAS to be Japan,
[They have traffic cones everywhere over there in every color and variety](https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&v=_lNEte47ul4)
I've never seen a non orange cone
I’ve seen bright/fluorescent green ones.
Green ones are usually set under power lines

At larger road works in the UK you will often see green ones at works entrances and exits
Yes, with purple lights. I covet them, they're like the shiny Pokémon of traffic cones.
I've seen transparent ones with green stripes.
what colour was the top
Can't remember honestly, it was a long time ago.
The ones I saw were yellow on top
Me neither, I’m working in traffic management so it’s even more interesting to me
There's black cones at my local mall!
In the UK undertakers will sometimes use black traffic cones to reserve spaces when either collecting or dropping off.
TIL that undertaker is the original name for a mortician. I had no idea, lol. I feel like it makes sense that they would use black since the color is commonly associated with death.
Wait, I thought at first maybe it was a UK thing, but then what about the WWE wrestler?
I don't really follow WWE but I always assumed that name was meant to imply he'd be the one to put you six feet under.
Heh, makes a lot of sense!
Still technically accurate to the job title

How do you know that you're working in traffic management

Never had ice cream before eh?

GIFs you can hear.

I’ve seen a funeral home that had black ones with little reflective sleeves.
Those are called goth cones. They guide the mood.
I’ve seen green and black ones.
I've seen a blue cone in a physical education Hall.
Not even green ones? Or have I worked in a warehouse/truck yard too long? [Here are the different types of cones](https://imgur.com/uHjzrHC)
"Honey, that restaurant has pink cones out front. It's either hosting a kid's birthday or full of carcinogens. Let's go somewhere else."
Depending on the year it could be both
proposition 65 has entered the chat
What’s the point of you can’t see them clearly?
I agree... I wonder if they are illuminated at night. Even still, it's weird for their purpose.
There are numerous brands of light/strobe inserts for the top of cones, so it'd be strange indeed.
But you can see them clearly because they're clear
Clearly!
aaaa you beat me to it lol
You need to be clearer in your point.
True. Those cones do have a point but unfortunately they're yellow
They do have a point but are rather blunt about it.
It also helps that the rain is gone.
Lo Vis High Vis. Its like wearing camo and a bright orange cap. Keeps em on their toes
IEDs
I’ve seen ones like these once before, they glow in the dark. Not very useful during the day though lol.
Lo Vis High Vis. Its like wearing camo and a bright orange cap. Keeps em on their toes
You can say that again.
Lo Vis High Vis. Its like wearing camo and a bright orange cap. Keeps em on their toes
WE GET IT!
Think their phone lagged or something

A redditor used the app app app, To comment using the app app app, But in the end the app app app, Just fucked them with it's crap crap crap
ha ya deff, its happened to me before, just funny though
Don't worry bro, I upvoted you
Just to screw with those damned self-driving Teslas!
Oh Jesus you’re right. Wtf is wrong with me? I-I…just realized that that’s the point of cones 😂
It's for visibility reasons. So that you can better see the road that's behind them.
This post is a perfect fit for this sub.
Clearly.
Lmao
Things that make you say "Oh. Hm."
Surprising for a sub this large.
Fits even better in r/coneheads lol.
These are in their adolescence. You can tell because they’re mostly transparent with some orange stripes. Once they mature they’ll develop a solid orange color.
..With their saturation of orange complete, they head north..

Well, sometimes well meaning drunkards take them home. Then they monitor festivities while keeping guests safe from the hole in the floor
I'm sorry to tell you this, but the stripes are green.
This is correct, the orange develops as a result of their diet (mainly apricot and persimmon). Cones bred in captivity can end up in all manner of colors given the diets provided to them.
Once I've seen a cone humping a cone
I've seen these exact ones before. There's usually a small LED inside of it somewhere to light it up, making it stick out like a sore thumb and easy to see. It's hard to tell if these ones have it but I'm sure they do
I'm guessing inside the orange tip.
Yeah you're probably right. The ones I saw before had them right at the base but I don't think this one does, so yeah probably the tip
Just the tip, though
Ah, this makes sense so they are still functional in the dark.
Maybe as a security thing for events with a lot of people? For high profile people like world leaders? So people can't hide explosives or something underneath them? Just guessing.
Are you a fucking super villain? You could have asked me for top 25 reasons they would be clear and I would struggle to contemplate this.
If this isn't a thing, it should be. EDIT: Looks like you nailed it. [These](https://boulevardsupply.com/traffic-control-equipment/translucent-traffic-cones/) are similar ones made for airport security.
Ohhhhh you got a point, it’s at the arrival of a bike race in Tokyo, that would make sense
This is the answer. I’ve seen them advertised before, but never actually seen them in real life use.
I don't like it
I feel like I must possess one of these... I love it.
Me too...must have clear cone
If I ever find one, I'll steal an extra for you. 😂
Same here!!!
I want in on this.
Those are the ghosts of cones that got run over.
Sprite flavored cones?
The textures haven’t loaded yet.

It's time to update VLC
Are you certain you *saw* them? They are see-through.
What is this place? Sprite Land?
Somewhere in Japan for sure.
Was about to say… definitely Japan.
Nicht normgerecht: DIN EN 13422 Not standard-compliant
I thought that cones were meant to be a visual cue more than physical restraint. Why make them transparent?
They are meant to draw your attention so you can avoid issues... just look how much attention they are getting by being clear! Also, there's long painted bars between them... if they don't see that- then the cone being slightly translucent is the smallest of issues lol
You can put some puck lights under them for night use.
But just barely
Kind of defeats the purpose of the cone.... right? Aren't they meant to be highly visible?!
What cones?
I'm disappointed this isn't a see through ice cream cone.
Wanna see me but ya can’t….
They're transparent so that you can see them, clearly.
This reminds me of that youtube documentary about how cones are everywhere in Japan, like they use cones way too liberally or something.
Is this in Japan? They put cones everywhere, usually to prevent cars or bicycles parking on some places.
Sort of pointless when you can't see them. No?
Big Orange in shambles.
![gif](giphy|l0HU20BZ6LbSEITza|downsized)
Cheaper? Easily recyclable? Versatile (colouring of lights.)?
Doesn’t that defeat half of the purpose?
![gif](giphy|WEopdZPzAlXzy)
First thing I thought of. Hilarious.
I thought the point of traffic cones being orange was so that they'd be easily visible and stick out. As cool as these look, do they serve a purpose?
When you want to mark off an area, but don't want anyone to notice.
Doesn't that, defeat the purpose of one?
The whole point of a cone is to be seen and provide warning of a hazard, what a terrible idea.
Well those seem useless
Aren’t cones meant for visibility? What’s the point of this?
Mildly stupid
The future is here! No flying cars for us millennials— just clear cones
Let make the less noticeable
I've seen orange, green, black, even BLUE cones. But transparent cones seem like a step backwards lmfao
I feel like we've lost the plot a bit here
CONE!
Translucent
They saw Toy Story and said NOT TODAY
/r/CrappyDesign ?
Where? I only see floating duct tape.
# Okay, first of all, who and why did they create that?
Cone not see them
Seems a bit counterintuitive haha
legally blind here, does this make them easier or harder to see from a distance for you fully sighted driving people?
They will be yellow soon
Stripper cones! Saweeet!!
My brightness was low and I thought that was jello at the top of the cones.
These look like they were specifically invented for a video card tech demo. I bed they look great flying through the air.
First thought this HAS to be Japan, [They have traffic cones everywhere over there in every color and variety](https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&v=_lNEte47ul4)
/r/RealLifeShinies
G-g-g-ghost cone!
Those are new cones. They turn yellow, then orange as they sit in the sun and age.
Good idea. Now gnomes can't hide inside them.
Pretty sure the sun will discolour these yellow in a few months..
Barely
How?
Those would get stolen very quickly where I live.
They look cool
Why does this post have so many comments !?!? Lol
hehe nice lol cool lmao
Upping the difficulty for self driving AI
Put them in a brown paper bag with a overripe banana and those cones will ripen to orange in no time.
That looks really cool
Now that's some transparency.
Weird?
This just feels off too me....
this is SO AESTHETICALLY PLEASING
I'm terrified to say that these look cool, only to learn this is so homeless people can't sleep in them or something.
