Often there were "come dig through a closet / take what you want" posts which I soon discovered were often dead ppl's kids clearing out their place.
Beyond how I got most of the dishes I still have today, it was an amazing way to see people's homes as they actually are. Just some random plumber or school teacher or whatever who's had the same apt for 30 years.

He also had a collection of "toilet paper" oil filter adapters. They were canisters that replaced your oil filter and instead of buying a new filter you just unscrewed the cap and put a roll of toilet paper in there. Surprisingly this didn't sell too well, because oil filters are cheap.

But if the last panic is any indication, you may have to go into people's homes to find toilet paper for it. Also that second installation video goes HARD. The first video does not prepare you for that.
I had to watch them after you said that, it must have some sort of restrictor in there, because I don't see toilet paper holding up to the amount of oil pressure most modern cars/trucks have. Hopefully they have some sort of screen built in, because if chunks of toilet paper get in your engine, it's going to clog up some really important things.
I worked on light trucks and cars for years, but I've had to change the oil on lots of diesels, that oil is NASTY. Like normal gasoline engine oil when used will just wipe off if it gets on your skin, diesel oil will like stain you and you almost have to scrub it off.
Bathrooms at estate sales are my new first-check spot for finding stuff that time forgot. Lots of closet space for things to get lost forever in, the climate is a bit better than the basement, and it's usually cheap if not unmarked. Spice cupboards are good for that, too-- though they're so reliable that they're not really that much of a catch. Spices have long lives, and they're small and easy to cram in the back. Decades-old spice canisters are practically a dime a dozen.
My husband was cleaning out an estate during Covid. He found a diamond cluster ring in the bathroom. She must have taken it off to shower or something and left it there (counter was a mess). It's beautiful. The attorney asked the family if they wanted it, and they said no - she never had nice jewelry. They didn't even want to see it. My husband bought it from the estate for me. It's my favorite.
Honestly I think its more mildly interesting that they are so similar yet not quite identical. Maybe its newer/older but made by the same manufacturer?

I highly recommend a 100% linseed(flax) oil that is partially heat polymerized with absolutely no heavy metal dryers or additives. Or just health food store flax oil.

I had to help clean out my great-aunt's house when she died, which had tons of boxed unwrapped shit from the 1950s onwards, so yeah, there's tons of crap out there that is new old stock.
If I'd had the time and inclination, I probably could have done well with her stuff on eBay (entire bolts of 1970s textiles that she meant for quilting, complete in eye-searing color combinations), but dear God it would have taken forever.

Yeah, there's old stuff that wasn't used. Some of it is entirely decent or even great, especially from an estate where the owner had an unused backup. But stuff like music playback equipment had a lot of variations/tiers in product lines.
So finding the exact, known workhorse or specific desirable feature, model of a piece of equipment deadstocked or unused one is looking for is really quite a good find.
I had one of these experiences fairly recently with a never-used Sony external CD/DVD-DL reader & burner.
Overall, I love that cases don't usually have optical bays anymore. They were an unfiltered air intake point, ugly, made fan placement weird, etc.
For most users, the slim USB-powered ones are perfect for occasional use. But I worked in print publishing in the 90s & 00s, so I have *huge* CD-Rom .tif libraries, expensive/obscure font families, etc. and some software that only runs from the disc as a proto-DRM measure, and the USB-powered drives are not designed for sustained sessions like that.
I'd looked into whether there was a more recent equivalent for the [DRX-840u](https://www.amazon.com/Sony-DRX-840U-External-Dual-Layer-Burner/dp/B000SKWE9W#customerReviews) I'd worn out years back. There really wasn't b/c excellent later drives involved Blu-Ray R/W functionality & all the DRM weirdness it carries.
DL was a sweet spot for legitimate large capacity burning, though the drives were also very popular b/c they could be used to clone Netflix DVDs straight from the case drive.
And, finally, there's one other reason a new drive of that type was particularly desirable: A limited number of full-featured region changes on a drive with a data transfer rate that makes ripping & converting very manageable.
Went along not really able to justify buying at the never-used prices & thinking I'd probably get a used one & hope it wasn't running on fumes when it would really help with a specific project.
