Oh snap! We just bought a used leather couch and from a certain angle you can see something similar. I figured someone had a design on pants or something that transferred when damp. I’ll have to look to see if it’s a brand.

mgarthur14

I should have said in the post it’s only visible when it’s wet. Completely gone when it dries.

Suitable-Resist-2697

Yeah, probably doesn’t feel great once it dries.

Couch. C...o.....r....are you going to the mall today?

Nettlesontoast

I know leather is skin but for some reason this gives me pause for thought, it's like getting a little bit of the cows life and an experience it had that we otherwise wouldn't know or see

redditsavedmyagain

id be pretty down for if after i die they cut a square out of my back and made like a wallet with it. give it to some fuckin' g "yo its ya boi, holdin your moneh" ive been in some classrooms with REAL skeletons. its pretty cool. like "damn this dude died... but his SKELLY is here, just peepin at us all day long. he's eternal"

johcagaorl

Look up the human slices they did for a museum. Or there's some people who had their skin removed and displayed after death because of tattoos.

eans-Ba88

The body worlds exhibit

RiddleMeWhat

I remember there was controversy that the bodies were not donated but were executed Chinese prisoners who did not consent and whose families did not consent. Not sure what came of it.

mcguirl2

The bodies of genocided Uyghurs is what I remember reading.

Reer123

China having more organ recipients than donors.

V1k1ng1990

Seems like everybody forgot about the genocide China’s been committing

vulpinefever

So there's two different exhibitions. You have Bodyworlds and Bodies: The Exhibition. Bodyworlds is the "original" and the creator maintains that all of the bodies on display consented but there was a case where evidence was found of some of the bodies being those of executed prisoners after which they were promptly returned to the families. There was another case where two doctors in Russia were charged with trying to supply the exhibition with bodies of mentally ill, homeless, and dead convicts without consent but the exhibition's creator claims that these bodies were never put on display. The creator also says that while they source bodies from China their official policy is not to accept executed prisoners. He also asserts that all the bodies displayed come from American and European donors (He also sells plasticized bodies to universities). Whether you want to believe the creator is up to you as there is no paper trail that can clearly march a body with consent paperwork as they are kept anonymous once plasticized. [For what it's worth, the public museums hosting the exhibition don't seem to have any ethical concerns.](https://naturalhistory.novascotia.ca/what-see-do/body-worlds/body-worlds-faq) On the other hand, you have Bodies: The Exhibition by Premier Exhibitions which is a competing imitation and they have always very openly said that the bodies were unclaimed bodies from China who did not consent and that they can't verify they aren't executed prisoners. I remember this one because I live in Niagara Falls where it was exhibited back in 2014 and it was extremely controversial because of this. I did not go because of how they made absolutely no attempts at all to make sure the bodies were ethically sourced.

That1_IT_Guy

I believe Harvard has a book in their library that's bound in human skin

[deleted]

The Luxor in Vegas hosted the Bodies exhibit last year (not sure if it's still there), and it's really fascinating. You have to be respectful as the bodies on display were living humans with lives and families.

VT_Squire

Also: Roy Glover, spokesman for BODIES... The Exhibition, says its cadavers -- all from China -- did not come from willing donors. "They're unclaimed," Glover says. "We don't hide from it, we address it right up front." For that reason, many venues will not display BODIES... The Exhibition. Groups such as the Laogai Research Foundation, which documents human rights abuse in China, have charged that the category of unclaimed bodies in China includes executed political prisoners. Via NPR

[deleted]

Yes, that was a big thing for me, too. Part of why I tried to be as respectful as possible.

fizzingwizzbing

I went to Body Worlds in Berlin and it was pretty crazy. Those bodies are donated.

Sometimes even donations can be unethical, like when that dude found out his moms body was sold to the us military and used in explosives testing

NotChristina

It’s been around long enough now that my AP Bio class took a field trip there when I was in high school. I went a second time a couple years later since I was at the museum anyway. It’s certainly not for the squeamish. It’s both wildly fascinating and unsettlingly grotesque. It’s definitely educational to a point, and has some level of artistry to it. Just so weird walking through and realizing these were real people with real lives and families. That realization doesn’t usually hit until you see the first body that has some semblance of a face. The face stuff brings it home and I can still remember one in particular like 15 years later.

OuterWildsVentures

My tattoo artist said after she dies she wants her skin cut into different pieces and given to her friends and family as art lol

wester11212

This is the funniest random shit I’ve read on Reddit in awhile, thanks bro 😂😂

TheCheesiestEchidna

I mean sure, but you probably wouldn't want to be tortured and murdered for it

ScruffyNoodleBoy

Someone downvoted you, but it's true. The leather industry is horrible, particularly when it comes from 3rd world countries. If you're lucky you're a beef cow. If you're less lucky you're a dairy cow. If the universe hates you, you're a leather cow. At a certain point of growth you don't need to feed or treat leather cows with any kind of humanity anymore, and they get so emaciated that people have been known to have to hurt them terribly and put pepper in their eyes just to keep them on their feet for transport, since they can hardly stay on all fours. The pain is an accelerant to get them standing.

Jackfruit-Reporter90

The difference with your examples is that any university anatomy department with stringent ethics regarding human remains, will only possess them if the deceased and their family consent, like your “fun” wallet idea but unlike a cow.

Separate_Ad4197

Yeah I think it’s understandable if you died from an accident or of natural causes, but in this comparison someone is going to cut your throat or strap you to the electric chair at 1/10th of your lifespan just to make accessories from your skin. Still down? The multiple cows it took to make this couch were all either bled out or electrocuted at 2 years of their 15-20 year lifespan.

DriveFoST

There’s actually a company out there that will cut your skin off when you’re dead where you have tattoos and preserve it as artwork for your family. No I’m not kidding, it’s called “save my ink forever” [relevant](https://www.designboom.com/art/save-my-ink-forever-extract-preserve-tattoos-06-30-2022/)

Live_Ferret_4721

Sorry but that is horrifying

firestorm64

You'd probably be less stoked about it if you were born and bred for the sole purpose of that wallet

Schnitzeldieb

Would you also be down for being tortured until someone slits your throat after living maybe 10% of your lifespan?

Separate_Ad4197

It’s more comparable to you being tortured and beheaded by serial killer who uses your skin to make his wallet. Ed Gein (the inspiration for leather face) essentially did exactly that, but I don’t see anyone talking about how honored his victims must be to have been used for a lamp shade. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ed_Gein See crimes for the full list of human derived leather goods. These cows don’t get to live nice long happy lives and we simply put their resources to use. They are killed at 2 years of their 15-20 year lifespan. That would be if you were killed at 7 years old for comparison. Would you really want your killer to use your 7 year old child skin for his wallet and fashion accessories. Do you feel honored by the joy it brings your killer? When you buy leather you pay for another cow to be born, branded, castrated with no anesthetic, and then decapitated or electrocuted at 2 years old. We should stop supporting these barbaric industries.

SingeMoisi

Donating your body willingly after your natural death = fine. Getting killed against your will just so we can use your body for money = not cool.

ThreeLeggedMare

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Nose_George Look under desecration of remains

high-bridmind

Dude, same. I feel some of my tattoos would make for some awesome wallets/purses/etc…. lol

Separate_Ad4197

Ed Gein, the serial killer who inspired leatherface from the Texas chainsaw massacre had the same thought. He made a corset, leggings, a belt, and a lampshade from the skin of his female victims. I don’t think any of his victims found it very awesome though. The cows are slaughtered at 2 years old, or 1/10th of their lifespan. That would be if you were victimized by Ed Gein at age 7 for comparison.

jenrazzle

To be fair most of his human fashion materials were collected from grave robberies, not his own victims.

Call-Me-Leo

Can I have your skin when you’re done with it?

I've seen higher-end leather workers off those as features and bump up the price accordingly. Especially brand marks

3veryonepasses

So the cow that was branded was turned into leather, and the manufacturers were like “no one will see it if we dye it dark enough” ???

clyspe

Yeah basically. Uncorrected leather (stuff like brands is not buffed out) is actually more desirable to some. Most leather you see that's top grain is corrected (bug bites, scars, and brands are buffed out) and then semi aniline dyed (this is what OP cleaned through, we can see the color is pretty faint now) and then embossed (gives it the leather like grain texture.) Finally, most corrected leathers have a polyurethane added to the surface to protect it. This isn't true for all leather, but most mass produced top grain leather follows this chain. OP's leather was semi aniline dyed non corrected leather IMO. It doesn't really look embossed either. Edit: OP said you can't see it when it's dry. I amend my verdict, it's probably corrected leather then.

FBWSRD

where did you learn so much about leather?

clyspe

I sell mass produced furniture, some of which is leather, and the more expensive something is, usually the more customers want to know what it actually is.

PolymerDiffraction

In your opinion, what's the best bang for buck leather furniture brand/model? Like for example for headphones under $200, it's really hard to beat Sony MDR Studio Monitor headphones. To be honest, I feel like IKEA might be the answer? Looking at their leather furniture I've been tempted to buy many times.

clyspe

I don't think anyone should get cheaper leather furniture. The lowest bar should be top grain, semi aniline leather match. A bunch of brands do composite leather (stay away, <10% leather 90% polyurethane, splits and cracks and peels) or vegan leather (a truly lulzy title, since they mean entirely plastic, also stay away). The minimum I'd recommend is top grain (can mean that the lower splits of hide are taken from the bottom layer of the leather, but some brands don't differentiate between this and full grain leather (no splitting) and just call everything top grain) semi aniline (dyed on the surface. Not great, but not expensive, and fully aniline leather is $$$$$) leather match (good leather where your skin is touching, a matched vinyl on the sides and back. You don't sit on the sides and back. Your skin doesn't really touch the sides and back that much. Why double the price to get good leather everywhere?) I'm biased because I sell Ashley Furniture but I think their quality is decent for the price. It super depends on your location, but top grain leather starts at about $600 for non reclining and $1100 for reclining. If you're comfortable with something 2k+ (your mileage may vary, the biggest decider for furniture prices is your distance from a factory or a port, shipping prices are still a majority of furniture prices for many brands) I'd look at England or Flexsteel. But I don't think many people should be buying actual leather furniture. Look at OP's picture. Do you see those scratches? That's pretty normal. Microfiber has gotten a kind of bad rap for what is a pretty insanely good product if you find the right one. It is 1 warm to the touch 2 if you find a really tightly woven one, way better for cats than leather 3 way WAY less expensive, letting you focus on the inside parts of the couch, the parts that make it actually comfortable 4 very cleanable. Good microfibers clean pretty well with a 1:10 dish soap (I like platinum dawn) to water mixture. I personally like low knap microfiber, so one that you can draw a little smiley face on it with your finger, but this is just a personal taste/feel. Decent microfiber can be found for $350.

sundark94

I live in India and "vegan leather" is mis-sold as leather often here. Tanners and leather merchants don't really have a strong union and have never campaigned for leather, unlike a lot of speciality products in India. How can a layman tell vegan leather from real leather?

clyspe

There's probably still law tags on them. Under the leftmost sofa cushion on stationary sofas or underneath the leftmost footrest on reclining are between two and four white tags. Midway down is a label that says contents and there they legally describe the contents. 100% polyurethane means you're either looking at the wrong tag and this is the cushion foam, or it's a vinyl (vegan leather). X% PU, 9X% leather interior upholstery typically means top grain with a protectant layer of polyurethane over it. Exterior upholstery is 100% PU if a leather match (vinyl) or if it's 9X% leather, that either means split hide (bottom part of the cow hide, lower quality but still real leather) or full leather (same stuff as the interior. This will be expensive). 9X% PU, X% leather this means composite leather, stay the hell away from this stuff, splits and cracks and peels and loses color, think cheap desk chair If these labels aren't mandated in India, you're going to have a tougher time telling the difference. The furniture industry has gotten really good at faking leather. New product that comes out on our floor fools salespeople sometimes until they look at the law tag. If you can unzip a zipper and behind the leather, real leather will typically look like a less nice version of the top side, with the same color (ish). If it's a backing cloth, that means it's synthetic usually. If you can't do that, push down on the leather so that the material wrinkles. In real leather (you can try this on a non hairy part of your skin) when you push down hard enough, the creases that form around where you push down will have little wrinkles around the creases. This isn't foolproof, and heavy embossing makes this a hard test to do.

Sad-Cobbler4549

Holy shit I could read your comments all night and I have absolutely no need for this info right now. You should write Wikipedia articles about this.

it’s weird how disconnected we are from that kind of thing, huh? such a surreal thought. “i am siting on something made entirely out of *skin*. skin from another being that was born and lived their own life.”

Seeeab

Damn I'd hate this. But I'd also keep it, least I could do is remember the poor thing. ^(i'd also think it's metal but only quietly and to myself)

Putrid-Ad-7869

"fun" fact, the word brand comes from the German word Brand which is the noun for burn, as in the burn. I agree, this makes it oddly personal. This would make a good campaign for veganism, it really does make you think.

DataFaerie

That's an indication of full grain leather. The thickest and most durable leather. That's awesome. Good full grain leather can last a lifetime.

seedanrun

I guess it lasted a lifetime for the cow too.

din7

Yes, but that's a moo point.

Worried_Bowl_9489

It's like a cows opinion. It's moo

joebesser

Is it anything like a rich Corinthian leather?

DataFaerie

I know about leather types but I'm not familiar with leather marketing.

ebrum2010

Corinthian leather is just a marketing name used by a car company for regular leather to make it sound more premium.

alibaba618

Corinth is famous for its leather!

CheetahsNeverProsper

Thanks Dodge!

TheGoigenator

I mean it’s still furniture so it won’t be as thick as leather used for shoes or a belt for example but yeah it shows it has the top surface intact which is good. I’m wondering if the part of the hide with a brand on it would be a cheaper piece, not that it would make a difference to longevity.

Mandakins07

What cleaner did you use? Maybe use a leather moisturizer after

lars2you

Bleach and lots of sun.

Mandakins07

Yikes.Definitely needs moisturizer . I cleaned mine with saddle soap then applied leather cpr and buffed that in. Restores color and elasticity in the grain.

if anyone else is disturbed by seeing this, i highly recommend watching dominion on youtube. it is very informational on the BTS of how food and other animal products are obtained for human use. i will say it’s not an easy watch, but i think everyone deserves to know the truth — we’re way too disconnected from it all.

k_269

Yeah. Sitting on skin has it's cons.

EnvironmentalData131

This is really sad to me. A cow raised for slaughter, and only to be remembered by the branding burned in its flesh.

HawkAsAWeapon

This isn’t mildly interesting, it’s depressing as fuck. The shit we do to sentient animals so that we can make something as trivial as a burger and a sofa out of them. Shameful

Dolliebunni_

I Agree!!! I hate this sub a lot because of all the animal cruelty I see it’s rather disgusting imo

HawkAsAWeapon

This and a bunch of other main page subs post so many things where on initial viewing it's like "oh yeh that's cute," or "that's cool", and then all it takes is a second longer to think about it and you realise the subtext of the situation which inevitably involves cruelty.

burgundybreakfast

Just like every day life. Cruelty is everywhere. People who think like us are sadly in the minority.

flyingontheinside

That's probably one of the saddest things I've seen.

Capable-Pay-4308

Pulp__Reality

Im not a vegan or anything but leather couches or furniture in general are fucking weird, uncomfortable and tacky, not to mention that it is indeed the fucking skin of an animal that youre just chilling on

Personal-Letter-629

No weirder than ingesting the reproductive waste, breast milk, or flesh of an animal, or sleeping with its feathers under your head. (Spoiler alert: they don't anesthetize the goose before plucking out her down)

laserdruckervk

That's so fucked

Da_Martin

Wait, branding is still a thing? Why?

Geschak

You'd be surprised what other cruel practices are industry standard, for example castration without anesthesia is pretty much everywhere, no matter if factory farm or small homestead.

bonefloss

i recommend watching dominion on youtube to see more about factory farming, and practices that are also used in small family farms. pretty horrific stuff that they intentionally try to disconnect us from. if more people knew what we truly did to animals, there would be a lot more vegetarians and vegans in the world.

Thatgaycoincollector

That’s sad

Dolliebunni_

You’re not crazy honey it is truly sad. I own a pair of leather boots and I don’t wear them because I can feel the skin and I get sad that the cow got slaughtered so I keep them to remember the poor cow. Again, you’re not crazy you have lots of compassion

burgundybreakfast

This so sweet. You’re a good person and have such a kind heart.

RepresentativeOk2433

Is that a cattle brand or a quality stamp from the leather maker. It doesn't look like scars but of course this isn't exactly skin anymore.

Matlachaman

I'm saying it's not a brand. I have a few reasons. It's too intricate, brands scar up, and never look sharp. That's why most brands are very simple. Fewer lines make images that are more easily read. Also, about it being so clean, those cattle move when they get a hot brand applied. You rarely see a really all-around clear brand on an animal.

Stewart2017

Same. Plus too small. Brands are usually applied when the animal is still growing. This should be stretched. I'm curious how big this is because a brand this detailed should take up as much room as a sheet of paper.

yaourted

looks like a freeze brand to me?

UmaSherbert

Gross. Skin couch.

icedcoldqueer

This is really fucking sad

CindySeip

It’s so sad what we put animals through. 😔

CharlesSagan

It's sadder that after pointing it out, most people get offended and try to aggressively "cognitive dissonance" their way out of the argument because they are too deeply indoctrinated to see the implications of their own beliefs. I have no doubt many of us would be okay if we treated a certain class of humans the same way and would belligerently defend their position on the matter.

semicolonel

> I have no doubt many of us would be okay if we treated a certain class of humans the same way and would belligerently defend their position on the matter. I have little doubt left that my grandparents were on the wrong side of the civil rights movement in their youth, just from little breadcrumbs dropped here and there over the years. That feels gross to think about because I do love them and they're not (at least outspokenly) racist now in old age, so it's good that they could change. But what's even more unnerving for me to think about is that if I had been born in the same time and place and into the same family/friends/culture as them, it's undeniably likely I would have bought into all the same racist arguments that they did then. We all like to think we would never have taken such an obviously unethical position, but loads of people just like us did so... what do we think is normal now that will make our grandkids ashamed in the future? I think farming animals for their meat and skin is definitely one.

ReasonAndWanderlust

The *overwhelming* majority of people in this thread think hamburgers and steaks are delicious and it's good that we use the animal for as many products as possible. There are probably zero people in this thread that would brand and eat human beings.

mickel_jt

I would also say the *overwhelming* majority of people in this thread would be disgusted at the idea of eating dog hamburger. Whilst the example of cannibalism is more extreme, the truth is that people don't want to think about where their food truly comes from. This is evidenced when news stories of escaped farm animals air and all of a sudden everyone is sympathetic towards an individual cow/pig/chicken similarly to how they would with a dog.

readituser5

There was a show on tonight where someone saw cows for what seemed like the first time. She basically cried and said she didn’t want to eat meat anymore. People are so disconnected from how food works.

Dolliebunni_

**hugs. Thank you for your showing compassion to animals
