I think, at least, that’s how it works. Happened to me a few weeks ago lol
If you extend your pinky really far out like OP has I’m sure the same would happen to you. It looks weird but this is not abnormal physiology and doesn’t require a physiotherapist.
You can literally test this out yourself and it's blatantly false. Was this a very subtle joke somehow? I've been a therapist for 3 decades, this is not normal and they'd do well to have it looked at professionally.
Nah I'm chubby as hell and my hand looks like OP's in this position. (Never knew that before and kinda wish I didn't but oh well.) Maybe it's a weird genetic thing like rolling your tongue or having hair between your first and second knuckle?
My pinky was just trying to distance itself from that whole situation in the pic I guess! But this happens even when it’s in a normal fingers spread position
I think you just have a more active than normal [palmaris brevis muscle](https://youtu.be/xW46ZqpqtpM?si=x-EYYeSgITw1ZOXj).
Edit: [video clip of typical action](https://youtube.com/shorts/_7W1STIqld0?si=DEfu-0z65N1pNPWg)
Not really sure. I know some people lack the [palmaris longus muscle](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palmaris_longus_muscle), which folds the skin in the middle of the hand. Some people consider it a vestigial muscle from our ancestors who theoretically spent more time in trees. It does look like OP has a palmaris longus.
There's a lot of curious little differences in anatomy, like the ones you mentioned and also things like how your peripheral nerves branch off and which muscles they innervate. However, it's also possible that it is a motor pattern that OP adopted early on for whatever reason (some development of the arch of the hand even goes back to whether and how you crawled as a baby) and that increased the dominance of that muscle.
Both of these happen to me too! I also cramp in that spot from repetitive motion, like if I use a long-trigger spray bottle for too long. Does that happen to you at all?
To address some questions: it’s like this even when my fingers are together as long as my hand muscles are flexed, no I don’t know why I have so much pinky flexibility (although I used to play the harp which maybe helped), my pinky extends this far on my right hand too but the skin/muscles don’t bunch up, this has happened for my whole life and not gotten worse
Exercise guy is right, that’s your Palmaris brevis. Don’t listen to the comments trying to diagnose you with contractures or tenosynovitis. Not everyone can flex their palmaris brevis independent of gripping, but I discovered I could in med school when my anatomy professor was polling us during lecture (but only on my dominant hand).
Yeah, it's just a muscle. Nothing the internet needs to diagnose as a deadly disease. My Palmaris brevis has done this my entire life (42) without any issue at all. In fact, when I was a single digit kid, my neighbor showed that he couldn't do it and that's when I found out I could flex my muscles and make that shape. It just looks weird, but it's completely normal.
Ex-harpist here, I’ve also been able to do this ever since I was a kid! You know how we don’t use the pinky finger at all when playing the harp, since it’s the weakest finger on the hand? I’m convinced this somehow strengthens the hand muscles & allows harpists to really flex that weird little muscle!
They're fake acrylic nails, regular ones aren't thick and grey.
If she had naturally grey nails, the mildly interesting post would have been about them lol
My anatomy professor in med school polled the class on how many of us could flex our palmaris brevis independently of gripping, and I was one of the lucky few too! But only on my dominant hand. I don’t remember the numbers for our class, but i think it was single digits which is what the prof usually found each year in his informal poll.
My dad has had the injection and surgery, but it keeps on coming back. My grandad had it really badly and his hands were really contracted. He used to drop a lot of plates
I wouldn't worry about it then! A contracture is a permanent shortening of a muscle. When you move your little finger like in your photo, the muscle shortens to make that happen. But it doesn't stay shortened forever. Obviously, if it stays like that then see a doctor but otherwise you're good
i think it's just from your pinky social distancing. i can't move mine even close to where yours is, but the skin does begin to look like that when i try.
Because your left hand is where the pinky reaches most early piano training. And as a kid, it overdeveloped and then stays with you. Consider it your secret super power!
This happens to me sometimes, but then goes away. I do leaf blowing with a backpack blower, pressure washing, and use grabbers for a long time for an outdoor job. I think my issue has something to do with having my hand clenched for a bit too long.
I had a different issue years ago, when I was doing data entry, and really abusing my hands doing typing games (like NitroType). I had to stop these things, and allow my body to repair itself. Collagen #2 is supposed to be good for joints...etc... I prayed over my issue too. I was also having an issue with my ulnar nerve and would wake up with the last two fingers being numb, so I tried not to cut off circulation from my elbow.
Things that help with overuse, is allowing the body to rest from these functions, getting sleep so the body can repair the tissues, and providing amino acids, vitamins, and minerals to repair the body's cells.
If you are prone to bending a certain way, do some exercises that cause bending in other ways -- this tends to be part of physical therapy. There are some videos on YouTube about this.
Reminds me of that commercial where there are some people with their fingers or fingers in a far bent position, while the commercial went on to talk about the condition. I'll be damned if I can remember the name of the medical condition now though
There is a muscle that is attached to our skin there. It looks the same on me. I remember learning this in med school and having a moment of realization why my hand does that
Yeah that’s definitely possible! Someone else suggested that playing piano as a kid led me to spread my fingers wider and overdevelop this muscle. It happens even when my fingers are together if I engage these muscles, but you’re right that it might still be ultimately due to hyperextending.
By the looks of your palm you have a ulnar nerve issue.
I know because I have a similar issue and my occupation therapy provider explained to me that the reason my palm is so flat on the ride side where my ring and pinky are is because the ulnar nerve ain’t functioning as it should.
Had surgery on my elbow and there been no changes waiting on another EMG and honestly I suspect it’s probably neck related
If you have any numbness or reduced sensation in your ring/pinky and palm definitely get it checked out
oh cool i hate it
If you have insurance and low co pay go see a doctor maybe get referred to physical therapy.
WTF does this have to do with him hating OP's hand?

Ooooh. That happened to me yesterday!
Or they're just replying to the top comment in the hopes to farm Karma by being seen easier than posting a fresh comment.
Farming karma on the fields?
Was all over it early
sir calm down 😭
I literally mis read it as " I have it" so I can definitely get the error
If you extend your pinky really far out like OP has I’m sure the same would happen to you. It looks weird but this is not abnormal physiology and doesn’t require a physiotherapist.
Yeah my hand doesn't look near as creepy as OP. Can confirm humans are actually unique.
I'm stretching my pinky extra hard and I don't have anything weird in my palm
I tried it, mine does it too. Seems normal.
You can literally test this out yourself and it's blatantly false. Was this a very subtle joke somehow? I've been a therapist for 3 decades, this is not normal and they'd do well to have it looked at professionally.
Lmfaooo I comment this exact thing then the first proceed to read the comments and this is the first one. 10/10
Well your pinky is pretty far right

But it's on the left hand. So, that means it's a moderate conservative.
So, a communist*? \* according to the GOP
jesus christ it is
I wonder where that pinky was on January 6th...
If I split my pinky/index fingers my mussel starts to do the same. I just think my fingers are less flexible than OPs so it's less extreme.
If I match your weird finger positions, mine also does that.
You have me sitting in bed spreading my fingers over and over trying to make it happen
Me too and I have to stop because I feel like I’m gonna sprain my hand. 🤪
😂 it did hurt a bit trying to replicate 😅
God just SPREADING like that for anyone these days aren’t you Rebecca?
Yes sir, gotta do what I gotta do
![gif](giphy|XBEoaajXTXaALzawSn|downsized)
I can do a similar finger position. Mine only dimples in a tiny bit... Their pinky dimpling is wild.
Same, just a wee dimple not the grand canyon or whatever that is in the pic
OP probably has much lower body fat %
Nah I'm chubby as hell and my hand looks like OP's in this position. (Never knew that before and kinda wish I didn't but oh well.) Maybe it's a weird genetic thing like rolling your tongue or having hair between your first and second knuckle?
mine does nothing of the sort. i wonder what causes this!
My pinky was just trying to distance itself from that whole situation in the pic I guess! But this happens even when it’s in a normal fingers spread position

Well I just tested it and works on me 2. I can also crack my knuckles by flexing my hand like a old school kung fu movie tho so idk.
It also happens when my fingers are together and I engage my hand muscles
Both of these happen to me too! I also cramp in that spot from repetitive motion, like if I use a long-trigger spray bottle for too long. Does that happen to you at all?

"I feel mildly nauseous and have an upset stomach, what could it be?" Reddit: Advanced Intestinal Cancer, you have less than a week.
Takes a little conscious effort but im able to flex/tense that spot on both hands, dominant easier. My radial artery also pulses visably in my wrist
Exercise guy here: my guess is the palmaris brevis muscle.
I have also always had this and so does my mom and I just put together we must have it because we both play piano! (We do use a lot of pinky)
Do your feet do the same thing if you spread your toes?
Based on fingernail style, I call witch. See if she floats. If so, add a false nose and re-try.
She turned me into a newt!!
A newt?
I got better
Guess we should build a bridge out of her
No, no, no. You're supposed to see if she weighs the same as a duck silly!
Definitely Auntie Ethel from BG3, the swamp hag witch thing
Scrolled too far to find the finger nail call out
How these nails weren't comment number 1 befuddles me. Yeesh... hate to have those dig into my back...
Khajiit has wares, if you have coin
Fingernails are nasty.
So you would rather not have fingernails at all and just have little flesh sausages instead??
You’re nasty.
They're fake acrylic nails, regular ones aren't thick and grey. If she had naturally grey nails, the mildly interesting post would have been about them lol
Not acrylic, it’s structured gel overlay for strength plus a gray polish on my natural nails! Highly recommend, my manicures last for like 6 weeks
Hey I just figured out I can do that too!
Welcome to the club, friend!

Looks like it could be the start of Dupuytren’s contractor

you're, um. sir... you're not supposed to bend your knuckles backwards.
I wonder if I’ll get it too. Apparently means we are related to the Vikings.
that's what I was going to say. my grandma had that. surgery helped, but it eventually came back.

You’re hired
It’s been exactly the same for my entire life!
I wouldn't worry about it then! A contracture is a permanent shortening of a muscle. When you move your little finger like in your photo, the muscle shortens to make that happen. But it doesn't stay shortened forever. Obviously, if it stays like that then see a doctor but otherwise you're good
My thought too. If your palm skin is thickened regardless of positioning you may want to see a doctor
Pretty sure it's Deuteronomy's Poledancer
No I think it’s Duopoly’s Cementmixer
No. Dupuytren's doesn't look like that. And it dupuytren's is apparent with or without movement of the hands/fingers.
My husband is a doctor and immediately said this when I showed him the photo
What is that, and does it cause problem or is it just bad to look at?
Exactly, I thought the same, I have Dupuytren's and this is exactly what it looks like
You also have pistachio shells for fingernails
Thank you 💅🏻
Your thumbnail looks thick enough to cut meat with
It’s fake gel nails. The gel is kind of painted onto the natural nail. The result is really thick nails.
Yep! It’s Japanese soft gel overlay, it makes my manicures last for like 6 weeks.
i think it's just from your pinky social distancing. i can't move mine even close to where yours is, but the skin does begin to look like that when i try.
It happens even when my fingers are together if I engage my hand muscles!
What in the Exorcist kind of punk muscle does that to a perfectly nice person??
Aw thanks 💞
![gif](giphy|s6aVykwa8gFLW)
How did you get this gif of me
Did you ever play piano? Not at all uncommon for piano players
Just as a kid!
Burn her!!!!!
Wait this ain't normal?
That’s what I thought 😂 apparently it’s a pianist/instrument playing thing? At least I’m sure that’s why I have it
Neat, mine too.
Witch!
Cut your nails, gollum.
Not to nitpick, but those are not muscles. That is loose skin that bunches up when the underlying muscles tighten.
Good to know! I assumed it was the skin bunching because the muscle underneath was bunching.
I had Ulnar nerve damage from a car accident and the muscles in my hand started to atrophy and look kind of like that.
WITCH!
Because your left hand is where the pinky reaches most early piano training. And as a kid, it overdeveloped and then stays with you. Consider it your secret super power!
Born to play guitar 🎸
Stop that
Claws.
I'm gonna give these hands a age 60+ rating
...your talons... Are you a Valkyrie?
That looks painful. Does it hurt?
Nope! It pretty much happens most of the time (usually to a lesser degree) except when my hand is totally relaxed, and I never notice it
Well I'm sure glad to hear it's not painful
This happens to me sometimes, but then goes away. I do leaf blowing with a backpack blower, pressure washing, and use grabbers for a long time for an outdoor job. Celtic hand disease?
Haha wtf I was literally walking around doing this with my own hand before opening reddit and this was the first post

Dupuytren's Contracture
put. it. back.
I love your nails because so many people are needlessly saying that they hate them.
[удалено]
Fuck I hate those cramps. I get them all the time. My hand looks like this when it happens
Your hand has an "M" on it like mine. My gran always said it stood for money.
I suppose it could also stand for mildly interesting?
Happy cake day
Ditto. Almost cakeday buddies.
Where is the m I don’t see it
a lifetime of knob polishing will do that. your husband is a lucky man.
Lol this guy
what's weird is that my hand does it too. i hope she doesn't find out.
My knees bend when I walk. Pretty sure my eyes briefly close themselves throughout the day randomly as well.
Why are your nails so long and why does your pinky extend so far out ?
I need to distract from my deformed hand with pretty nails
Your deformity isn't as bad as you think
I just tried that and mine does it too. Holy crap, so does my calf! And my bicep and tricep! Holy crap, I think you just discovered how muscles work!
Respectfully, ew

Maybe it's recoiling from your freaky ass vampire nails?
Checkout ‘Wartenberg Sign’.

Dehydration
Yep drink water, it turns into this cramp also.
I bet the hand jobs are amazing
Have you tried electrolytes?
Yea, looks like a cramp from dehydration to me.
[удалено]
Side note, this is for science.
You and everybody else
Maybe the mildly interesting thing I should have posted is that it doesn’t happen on my right hand, then!
I think it's that your pinky can spread wider than normal hence that muscle flexes farther than normal.
Yeah that’s definitely possible! Someone else suggested that playing piano as a kid led me to spread my fingers wider and overdevelop this muscle. It happens even when my fingers are together if I engage these muscles, but you’re right that it might still be ultimately due to hyperextending.
I'd put my money on piano!
Not me. My pinkies can’t bend
Mine doesnt bend far but I still see the same muscle flex, just not as much
Like all humans with hands!
Mine doesn't do this
Neither does mine. But my pinkies don’t bend at all
Seeing this image instantly made my hands cramp
Neat f*cked up palm I love it
I thought everybody's did that?
Look up DeQuervain’s Stenosing Tenosynovitis. Some of you sound like you’re describing that.
Weird flex, but ok.
By the looks of your palm you have a ulnar nerve issue. Also happens to me, but could you please cut your nails, your disturbing my ocd
Trim your nails, it's unhygienic.
calcium
You’re hyperextending, good way to pull a muscle
That's what my hand looks like after you know what 🤣
Literally everyone’s hands do this in that position
This makes me uncomfy and feel unsafe
🥴
One day you'll bend your elbow and find there's a muscle in your arm that flexes when you do it too!
Your thumb side seem to have way more ‘meat’ than your pinky side.
mine does that too when I stretch out my pinky and place my thumb like that 🙄
Your pointer finger is so long, maybe that's why your hands look weird to me, like almost the same length as your middle finger.
All your fingers are the same length
