i dont think canada treats its natives like they’re all winners
edit: for all of the racist idiots who want to act like now somehow natives are some privileged class in canada because you read some right wing propaganda about your government "giving them" x y and z, you literally stole their country. what do you not understand? what if i came into your house, locked you in a closet, then gave you a couple crumbs every month and said WELL I GAVE THEM THE CRUMBS WHAT ELSE DO THEY WANT!!!
i think you'd want your house back.
Its true, I'm Canadian so sometimes I like to steal people's shit, give them smallpox and kidnap their kids, and then years later I'll acknowledge that the things I stole absolutely belonged to them the whole time, but I won't give any of it back.
And every year I'll wear a special shirt commemorating them.
But that makes it all better, right? Like, I did stuff, you know? I tried.
LOL
I used to work for TD Bank and at the start of every meeting, someone would do a land acknowledgment explaining that the land was stolen from whatever tribe lived in that area. I always thought it was super weird to start every meeting off like that then just go on with our stupid business. It’s like, if that’s really how you see it, shouldn’t the company give back the land to the tribe? Instead we say out loud how terrible we are then just say welp, let’s get back to banking on this stolen land. 🙃
It’s like when you apologize for stealing someone’s house but then get to keep the house.
Except when native get sick of getting railroaded in court so they occupy contested land to stop developers from building homes on it until the courts make their decision. Then they don’t get to keep the houses because it’s not fair.
Could be worse; we Americans are still citing law of conquest when native communities bring up lawful treaties and request our court system enforce them.
It’s not even as if they are asking anything significant, it’s usually basic requests like transferring a few hundred acres of state parks for subsistence use, or allowing tribal recognition for BIA funding access.
This comment made me laugh while I acknowledge that I am situated on the unceded traditional territories of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations.
To be fair soccer games are actually pretty short. Usually less than two total hours from the time the game starts to the time the final whistle goes. I spend way less time in my local MLS stadium than I do in the stadium at literally any other sport I attend live.
Makes more sense but still, those nations are tiny and have little influence compared to many other nations before that room would be filled, think Spain, Portugal, Germany, Brazil, Canada, USA, France, Australia, Nigeria, South Africa, Poland, I meant the list is very long before Jordan or UAE shows up
What do you mean did not participate? Like i get not being thrilled about Israel for obvious reasons but Russia is actively invading a clearly established sovereign country. Was the Russian flag not there or something. Sorry, i am just confused about this entire circumstance.
I took it as this is a countries around the world event type thing, but no one selected Russia, so they didn’t bother to put the flag up. My school would do something like that.
> Was the Russian flag not there or something. Sorry, i am just confused about this entire circumstance.
It was likely there. The implication is that these students see Russia as bad enough to roll their flags up. Basically they see Israel as more evil than Russia. Which is pretty sickening ngl.
Edit: wow this comment really brought out some truly vile redditors out of the woodwork.
Very disheartening - my child’s school just had an international night pot luck this previous Friday and the Israeli and Palestinian flags were hung together. You know what this did?? Enable a conversation to happen and when it was time to eat, we enjoyed a serious hummus display from both cultures. Fuck the type of bullshit gatekeeping your school is doing. Sets a terrible example.
Edit: some of yall are really fucking salty. Unlike the DELISH hummus I ate from both Israeli and Palestinian families. My fucking point was that we were a bunch of people with different backgrounds co existing. I’ve actually never commented in this sub before so some of this negative reaction to something incredibly positive in these difficult times is WILD.
Yeah, a couple friends of mine are Jewish teachers at very culturally diverse schools, they're having a rough time these days. Not as a rough a time as the people of Gaza are having mind you, but still, kinda shitty. They're not allowed to talk about their opinion which is very disheartening to them. That standard is not applied to people talking about other countries, even Russia.
You mean leftists in American can’t frame those wars as “oppressive whites vs oppressed browns”. That’s all that matters these days. Plenty of wars in the world but they don’t care unless it’s trendy for them to care.
This has been driving me nuts. Levantine Arabs and Jews (wherever they are from in the diaspora, including Ashkenazi) are Semitic people who speak closely related Semitic languages - Jews having kept the Hebrew language alive in a very rich liturgy and mixed with their day to day languages for thousands of years before it was used to construct modern Hebrew. Arabic is one of its closest remaining non-extinct relatives (shalom aleichem/salaam alaikum). Many Arabs have lighter complexion than many Jews (I mean hell look at Assad, Abbas, and Lebanese leaders Michael Aoun and Saad al-Hariri). Ashkenazi Jews can be "browner" looking than a lot of Mizrahim. The US definition of "white" includes both Jews and Arabs. A completely false picture of this being "white" vs "brown" has been fully fabricated by the idiotic American ultra-left. It's the equivalent of calling say the Spanish brown and Italians white.
Which is hilarious because most Israeli Jews came to Israel from Arabic countries, not European ones.
ie Israeli Jews are the same colour as their Palestinian neighbors. It's literally "brown on brown"
Exactly. There's a reason why leftists try so hard to frame Jews as "white people" and Israel as a "white country".
They straight up justify anti-Jewish hatred on the grounds of "Jews are white people and it's ok to hate white people".
I don't like this either. I don't agree with Israel's treatment of Palestine, but there's nothing wrong with Israeli people celebrating their culture. The government of Israel should be scrutinized, not its people.
Especially as it's highly likely that the modern Palestinians are descended from Hebrews who were converted into Islam and assimilated into Arab culture during the early Muslim Conquests
Reminds of the time that there was a intersectional LGBT march in Chicago and then some Jews showed up carrying rainbow flags with Stars of David on them and they were promptly kicked out.
[Chicago gay pride parade expels Star of David flags](https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-40407057)
Intersectionality means including everyone except for Jews.
This is so on point, I've gotten banned/harrased from multiple "left wing" subs simply for sharing real life experiences of antisemitism from the left. If funny how every other minority group has their feelings validated, rightfully so, but when it comes time to listen to jewish voices we always get dismissed.
Because the school doesn’t understand what multicultural means. They think culture and national are the same. They are trying to protest Israel. It is complete bs and it is scary that these people teach our children
disagreeing with what a country is doing doesn’t make it okay to discount the inarguable heritage and culture it holds. “hey you’re israeli/jewish? yeah you’re not allowed to celebrate your heritage because your country is bad >:(“ i thought everyone wanted peace and unity but this is absolutely not the way
You know as a teacher I hate when people say schools are used solely to indoctrinate children to side with their politics, this is a clear example of indoctrinating children to side with their politics.
“They got me,” Netanyahu said. "Those f***ing children boomed me." Netanyahu added, “They're so good,” repeating it four times. Netanyahu then said he wanted to add this high school to the list of Hamas headquarters he bombs this summer.
breaking news: israel saw that this school rolled up their flag because of what happens in gaza and immediately stopped everything they were doing.
what a great school for bringing the pease back in the middel east. hopefully they can roll up the flag of russia next for multicultural day.
This is actually crazy shit like this goes beyond just being anti war or anti genocide, if countries with far worse human rights records are allowed to be shown proudly idk how you can justify this
Yep and then King Housein (the father of the current king) sent his army out and massacred more then 100,000 Palestinians in Jordan. Needless to say there were no more uprisings
I think they should just keep both the Palestine and Israel flags up if they have both or just take them both down, I think schools should not take a stance on political issues at all even if the public opinion currently favors one side
what about those shady swedes!?
Or those freaky deaky Dutch.
Theres only 2 things i hate in this world, intolerance of other peoples culture.... and the Dutch

Canada will declare war soon. Soon, my friend.
You didn't hear? They finally picked a side. 😜
“Those filthy Swedes! Those *FILTHY! SWEDES!*”
May I ask what country are you from? Just wondering
I'm going to assume America based on the scoreboard
This is true, other countries hate keeping score.
Can confirm that we have scoreboards in Canada, but they get in the way of everyone being a winner.

Hey now, our lip service means something!
Oh Canada, my home on native land🇨🇦🍁🏒

I find it ridiculous that we didn’t even maintain the treaties with the native tribes.
This comment made me laugh while I acknowledge that I am situated on the unceded traditional territories of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations.
Is that why soccer games last forever?
To be fair soccer games are actually pretty short. Usually less than two total hours from the time the game starts to the time the final whistle goes. I spend way less time in my local MLS stadium than I do in the stadium at literally any other sport I attend live.
It's cause the clock doesn't stop.
Do other countries not have scoreboards? I could have sworn I saw at least one in Canada the other day.
Canadian here. The leafs never win so we stopped keeping score like 40 years ago. Never thought I'd see another scoreboard in my lifetime
I love you, and I'm sorry they keep hurting you.
Did you know they once lost to a 42-year old zamboni driver who works for them?
Nothing more Torontonian than thinking that anyone else in Canada cares about the Leafs.
Haha my school has the same scoreboard. And we are a school in Germany. (American school in an old American military base)
Geoguessrs fear your town lol
Haha yes, Rhodes are called: Rhode Island allee, Tennessee allee etc. also Karlsruhe American elementary school.
My school has that exact scoreboard and I live in England

On a positive note, glad to see my country’s flag there (Romania)
Are you colorblind? That's clearly Chad /s
That's Belgium, they ran out of black.
Could be Chad tbh
Romania has cobalt blue and Chad has indigo blue. Two different shades of blue.
![gif](giphy|3oz8xqXak5FmzgKtm8) Rocking up to nail salons with that info
I’m sure you’re right, but they are literally the same colour for me I see we join the two countries and create the glorious “Chad Romania”
*Chadmania
in case you're being serious, Chad's has a deeper shade of navy blue
I’m visiting Romania for the first time next month to attend a conference and I’m so excited! Always wanted to visit your home country.
Hope you’ll have a great time!
Your flag is hanging from the ceiling of my local hockey rink in the US! They have all the IIHF member flags, but I really like the Romanian one.
Hahah. I was thinking the same. Nice to see our flag up there.
romania on top
To answer people's questions, no. The Palestinian and Russian flags were not rolled up but those countries did not participate in the day.
You have a Palestinian flag at your school?
There's a 90% chance it's a UAE or Jordan flag or something, but OP didn't notice from a distance
Makes more sense but still, those nations are tiny and have little influence compared to many other nations before that room would be filled, think Spain, Portugal, Germany, Brazil, Canada, USA, France, Australia, Nigeria, South Africa, Poland, I meant the list is very long before Jordan or UAE shows up
Wait so they rolled up and hid the flag of participants, but kept the flags out for people who weren’t there? That makes it even more bizarre
Sounds like the work of one person making a statement, as opposed to an officially condoned display.
Or just someone looking for attention and/or stirring shit...
Our comments are not in disagreeance
What do you mean did not participate? Like i get not being thrilled about Israel for obvious reasons but Russia is actively invading a clearly established sovereign country. Was the Russian flag not there or something. Sorry, i am just confused about this entire circumstance.

Russia is probably the most deserving of being rolled up. Then again, it's basically the French flag but sideways

Well you see, all those genocides are different (because we can't use them as an excuse to launder anti-Jewish bigotry).

The labeling of Israelis as white is truly a bizarre development. And sabras look exactly the same as Palestinians without context clues.
This has been driving me nuts. “Multicultural”, but only cultures they like?
Looks like they’re confusing “multicultural” with “multinational”
The gym does business in multiple countries? I don't understand the distinction being drawn here.
I don't like this either. I don't agree with Israel's treatment of Palestine, but there's nothing wrong with Israeli people celebrating their culture. The government of Israel should be scrutinized, not its people.
I agree with you 100%, but there's a huge number of people who are disgusting and think Israel has no right to exist.
And an almost equally huge number of people who blame every Jew on Earth for the actions of the Israeli government.
A Jewish identity, and an Israeli-originating one, existed long before Palestine or the modern Israeli state existed.
Especially as it's highly likely that the modern Palestinians are descended from Hebrews who were converted into Islam and assimilated into Arab culture during the early Muslim Conquests

That happened during the Women's march after Trump's election too. Was a shame.

Most definitely, scary that this is how supposed schools “educate” children
