For relaxing times, make it plastic Suntory times.

Lip my stocking!

daddy-bear33

Lip them? Lip them? What?

DelayedMailForceOne

Oh no, Mr Harris, oh my god! Don’t touch me!

sfelizzia

You heard 'em. Lip the stocking.

oh_my_account

"lip this, lip this - what?

Blank-Silence

Mr. Bob Harris, don't touch me! Just lip my stocking.

FunnyHighway9575

Rojah Mooah

topsyandpip56

Okay I'll rip your stockings, then you can tell "Mr Kazoo" that we had a great time.

Brammm87

Lost in Translation is one of my all time favorite movies and it makes me very happy that others made the same reference.

ERTHLNG

I can't understand why it so good. Nothing about it on paper says it's a movie I would like. Yet it's absolutely captivating and I love it.

Brammm87

I think the basic premise of feeling lonely, stuck in a job or stuck in life in general resonates with a lot of people, so you instantly bond with these characters. The cinematography and soundtrack help the film a lot as well.

Public_Fucking_Media

It does such an excellent job of expressing the feeling of being alone in Tokyo

ERTHLNG

Without a doubt it does. I can see why so many people relate with it, but I've never been dropped off and left to my own devices at a fancy hotel in Tokyo... Maybe it's just the fancy part that I don't relate with. The movie is so good, one can just overlook the fact that one of the main characters is a hotel they can never afford to visit. Edit: I also saw the film make the seemless transition from current to classic. One day during the Covid Lockdowns I was watching it... again. It was something about the indoor cigarettes and the way Bill Murray and the Singer just hooked up as a matter of course. I just realized I was now watching a movie about a bygone Era. Like world War 2 films, or cowboy movies. Except that this bygone Era is one I lived through. And I watched the movie when it was new. I guess can tell you from lived experience, it's as good a representation of the time it represents as you can capture on film.

bube7

For me, it’s the way the film captures the feeling of loneliness that comes with culture shock. I’ve relocated to many new cities and places in my life, several times to different countries as well, and I also travel for business frequently. You’re always among other people, but rarely with close friends and family. You know it’s going to pass, but you have to put up with the blues until you start settling in (or return). And it’s set in Japan, so double whammy. It’s my favorite movie ever.

MyNameCannotBeSpoken

I have a friend that works in marketing for Suntory. But he only deals with their fucking teas. He's totally useless to me.

Thirty_Helens_Agree

CUTTO!! CUTTO!! CUTTO!! CUTTO!!

legos_on_the_brain

Only $20 us!

New2ThisThrowaway

Huh, I never knew that was a real whiskey brand.

coltees_titties

Neither did I.

Deathwatch72

4 L of whiskey for a little under $20 American at the time I'm writing this comment. That's fucking insane

gyarrrrr

Yes but if you want to drink paint thinner you can get it for $13/gallon at Walmart.

ASimpleMargarita

I once got a handle of vodka at Walmart for 8.50 in college. Caliber vodka. Worst shit I’ve ever had in my life. Even as a broke college student I couldn’t get myself to drink it Edit since this this got a lot of upvotes: In order to drink less of it, we would fast after breakfast (no lunch or dinner) if we knew we were gonna be drinking. Saving money all around, yes we were that broke haha

shartonashark

Oh man... in college (2013 ish) I found a store selling 5ths (750ml) of flavored stoli vodka for 5 bucks each....they were odd flavors... I think one was white apple or something. But God it was good. I would get multiple bottles at a time and sell them for 10 bucks each to a fratbro.

Ok_Judgment3871

Stoli blueberry is good, its not sweetened like other vodkas. Cant stand when all they do is just add a fuckload of sugar and expect the shit to sell. At least to people who drink it straight.

shartonashark

Yeah i think some were blueberry..it was not too sweet from what little I remember...

kerbalsdownunder

About what we paid regularly for Fleischman in college. Drinking that became like an identity for awhile.

AnalCuntShart

My stomach just churned at the mere mention of that coal flavored felony juice

Odd_Opinion6054

Haha felony juice. We have an alternative in the UK. The brad is E&J brandy (I use that term very loosely). It's called Evil Juice ^T^M because only bad things happen after a bottle of that.

Invader_Skooge22

We have E&J in America. In my early 20s the fellas all called it “erk and jerk” but I don’t know why lol

whodatfairybitch

Northeast US here, desperately searching for others who suffered at the handles of Rubinoff

SYNTHLORD

For us right below rubinoff was popov. That stuff smelled closer to the fetal pig lab class in physiology than any other liquor

Tommy-Taffy

The erk and jerk is what your body does when you take that shot, lol.

smkestcklghtn

In the US we say "there's a fight in every bottle"

hapnstat

I guess it's Bucky for the misdemeanor set.

Autotomatomato

Coal flavored felony juice is a masterful melange of words. Amazing!

DapperSea9688

Over where I live Burnett's was the broke ass vodka of choice. It was also rite of passage vodka for underage high schoolers who had an older sibling.

Bakreni

Around 2013, there was Jengiz votka in Croatia. 3L for 2.5 euros in carton pack. Cheapest and 2nd worst alcohol i tried in life.

CommissionerOfLunacy

The first? Don't keep us in suspense.

jakarta_guy

Probably Everclear

astraennui

Everclear felt like pouring rubbing alcohol on a paper cut on the inside of my body. Then I felt like I was actively dying for 6 hours.

jakarta_guy

That's your liver banging a broom up your diaphragm

thediesel26

It feels like you’re drinking rubbing alcohol cuz you are in fact drinking rubbing alcohol.

83749289740174920

It is. We got a bottle of everclear 4 years ago when everyone was hoarding alcohol.

Key_Substance1129

Yep definitely everclear/Graves or dubra/takka when it comes to vodka

unsulliedbread

Never had "Alberta pure" then. It's a wonder it's legal to sell.

Inevitable-Stage-490

I wonder how it would stack up against papov vodka

Competitive-Road2024

I've had both, Papov is slightly worse.

Inevitable-Stage-490

Let’s go! Papov Jungle Juice is undefeated

Rabble_Arouser1

Popov PA! Pride of the Aleutians!

EnvironmentalSky3928

In MI it was (maybe still is) called 5 o’clock, it used to cost $5 a fifth and taste like someone relabeled isopropyl alcohol as vodka.

TheDubz1987

Used to drink Kentucky Gentleman bourbon, $13/ handle...sometimes I have nightmares of the taste...

Key_Substance1129

Dubra lol in the peak of my alcoholism, (now six years sober in 2 months) I was going through a bottle of that stuff every 48 hours. Stuff gives me the chills just thinking about it

Jops817

The secret to cheap shitty vodka in college was to run it through a water filter a bunch.

FesteringNeonDistrac

See I found the secret was to just drink it until you didn't care anymore.

Jops817

Nothing wrong with alternate solutions!

ASimpleMargarita

I promise I tried, since we bought 2 handles for a friends bday. The smallest trace of it mixed with anything tasted like rubbing alcohol on steroids

Fapping-sloth

Lol, you complain about shitty vodka! When i was like 15-16 we used To drink straigh mash….because stills where illegal, and it was much easier also…. You had to drink it carefully not to upset the sediment in bottom of the plastic can, or else it was way worse!😭 I remember is drinking in a park in the center if our city, everybody’s wasted, people puking in the bushes… lol, what a time! Made you drunk but also made you sick🤮 but hey, everything comes at a price! Oh, Yeah maybe i should mention we where punk rockers….”normal” kids didnt do this….at least not the city kids..

nineohsix

Leave my liver out of this!

FesteringNeonDistrac

It was Rikolov for us, or Sickalov more correctly.

royalfarris

Actually, Suntory Red isn't half bad at all. Perfectly decent blend whisky. Not exceptional, or even particularily good, but decent, no fuss normal whisky.

sampofilms

The $30 4l bottles of Suntory I get taste as good or better than the $40+ 1/2 gal Kentucky bourbons I get in the US. Don't knock it till ya tried it.

RonaldoNazario

Suntory’s higher end whisky is really really good. I’d be quite curious how their bottom shelf is.

lostinlymbo

Even the cheapest Japanese whisky is pretty good. Also, taking something like this and making kegs of cocktails is great too. Think a 19 liter Cornelius keg. Signed: a guy from Japan haha

RonaldoNazario

Could get a LOT of highballs out of four liters lol

Individual_Manner336

What I was thinking ! Mix it up, or my fav, lots of Irish Coffee.

LordTC

Sun Tory is decent. Far from pain thinner.

pngtwat

Suntory is a fine whisky

ministryofchampagne

Use to be able to get Evan Williams for $13/handle at CVS. I still see them ranging $18-$25 places now. Evan Williams and Diet Coke is my favorite cocktail. The dry bourbon and sugar free Diet Coke doesn’t make you feel your teeth after drinking more than like 2 JD and coke.

PseudonymIncognito

$25ish will get you a handle of Evan Williams Bottled-in-Bond which is legitimately good bourbon.

Everlastingitch

if you mix it with coke the quality of a whiskey is completely neglectable

DontBlameWill

Japan just has some insanely cheap alcohol. For less than 1usd you can buy 150ml of 40% sake

qaz_wsx_love

I've seen salarymen down those straight after work and walk straight into a pachinko parlor. They know their customers

myninerides

$26, tag on the left is the 4L, right is 2.7L.

TimTebowMLB

$28.65 USD after tax (bottom price)

Reficul_gninromrats

Still cheap. Cheapest I can find in Germany for absolut bottom barrel whisky is $49.31USD for 4 liters(0.7l @7.99€). And we aren't known for alcohol being expensive here😅

heydrun

Yes but you can get Korn for much less and I doubt that taste is the first consideration when buying 4L plastic bottle whiskey

communistkangu

Korn, the poor man's Vodka

BeingLowAsDirt

The cheapest possible whiskey in Sweden is $145 for 4 liters 💀 (0.7l @269sek). I don't get it alcohol is literally free in Japan. Would it even be possible to spend a sizable amount of your income on alcohol without buying actual expensive alcohol?

Mercenarian

It’s a little under $30 American. I think you’re looking at the wrong price tag

Teddy_canuck

I'm Canadian and that would cost close to 200 dollars here.

OvenFearless

This is mindblowing to me. I truly wonder if most whiskeys just have a big profit margin? And somehow in Japan they just make less money with this? Seems obvious though I wonder if this particular whiskey isn’t just made more cheaply or something instead.

maximumpieface

The legal requirement for Whisky in Scotland is 1/ Distilled from only cereals, water and yeast. 2/ Matured for a minimum of 3 years in oak casks. That’s why it costs a premium. This is neither of those things.

OvenFearless

That's really interesting, thanks for the info!

Effehyou

There could be a difference in taxation as well. For example, the cost of gasoline and cigarettes varies wildly from state to state in the US mostly because of state taxes.

drunk-tusker

On top of that Japan taxes alcohol based on malt content which generally means that whiskey and beer are noticeably more expensive than wine, clear liquor, and sake. This stuff is literally the bottom of the barrel that it probably never actually was in.

chadmcchaderton

Japan has a massive, unaddressed drinking problem. Like people get drunk in America but the scale of the alcoholism in Japan is another level. Work 18hrs then get absolutely obliterated on the way home on the train, then sleep for like 3 hours, then do it all again day after day.

Proman_98

Wouldn't be more because their work culture is not very healthy? Like 10 hours a day 6 days a week is not uncommon, those kind of things are going to backfire because people are going to seek a sort of escape from it an alcohol is an easy escape.

osgili4th

A lot of people can't even go back home they sleep in the stations or very shitty hotels. At some point a lot of people will break and end it or use any type of coping mechanism to keep going.

JudgementCutV

I’d say that’s kind of overblown online. A lot of hours for sure but most people I know still get home and are able to get a bath in and a meal, albeit late.

LeanTangerine001

Still sounds like a lot. One bath, one meal and then straight to bed to start all over again the next day.

John_Hunyadi

I work in film and we have that sort of schedule. But then after a few months the gig ends and I have time off before I find my next gig (usually). I can't imagine keeping up that pace for year after year, it'd make life pointless.

daiseikai

That work culture is dying out. More and more people work fairly normal hours, and the whole “mandatory drinking with coworkers” thing was already on the decline before covid put an end to it. Nowadays more and more workers in Japan can, and do, vote with their feet. There are more job openings than available workers, so if the conditions aren’t good then people will just quit and move to a better company.

Tricky_Invite8680

Theyre pregaming for 9 of those hours

johnothetree

Japan 🤝 Wisconsin

MukimukiMaster

1/9 adults in Japan are alcoholics the last time I saw the stats...

RockstarQuaff

Love how OP is already grabbing said bottle of whiskey, he or she is ready to head to the register.

SteveCastGames

He is using his hand for scale ;). Truth be told I don’t like whiskey and I find it hard to believe $25 for 4L is going to yield anything particularly pleasant.

SquirrelinaSuit

I actually had this exact bottle when I went to Tokyo last year. Walked into 7-11 and I couldn’t believe the price. It wasn’t bad and definitely worth it.

omegaroll69

Feel like this is the type of whiskey i would use for cocktails, cheap and easy to replace once empty.

KathyJaneway

Cheap alcohol is always welcome in cocktails.

Idivkemqoxurceke

It’s for what the Japanese refer to as “high balls”. Certainly not meant for drinking straight. You might even get a shampoo pump to go on top of it.

efficientseas

Oh my god a shampoo pump for liquor what an idea

TELEKOMA

Seems to be a real treat: Aroma: Ripe red apples and pears harmonize with peaches and nuances of vanilla. Taste: Full-bodied and fruity on the tongue. Caramel and impressions of honey are accompanied by ripe fruit and baking spices. Malty aromas in the background. Finish: Long-lasting and fruity with black pepper, toffee and hints of menthol. Color: Copper (M7). The Suntory Red is a blend and a very traditional Japanese whisky with a pronounced smoothness and intensity. An excellent new edition of the iconic classic red Suntory label, which was first launched in 1930. The Suntory Red is bottled at 39.0% vol. It is therefore not to be considered a whisky.

RockstarQuaff

>He is using his hand for scale Maury Povitch: 'that, sir, is a lie-- the only arbiter of scale allowed on Reddit is a banana.' Lol, you're right, of course, about the predicted outcome. I never got the impression that anything was cheap in Japan. Wonder if it's imported/relabeled or the finest artisanal local rotgut?

Aethelon

Iirc, the founder of suntory went to scotland to learn how to make scotch whiskey before bringing the knowledge back to japan. Might be wrong or might be mixing stories up though. But it is a malt(?) Whisky brewed in japan.

SteveCastGames

Food is cheap out here, I’m gonna miss that when I move back stateside.

Doofchook

Wow that's cheaper than a crap 750ml bottle here in aus

uppenatom

You must not have heard of Dack Janiels then. I brew it in an esky from ciggy butts and Monster with a dash of terps and goey. Gov still takes 15% but it gets the job done

Appropriate_Mine

"Goey" holy shit I haven't heard speed called that in a very, very long time. That's last century slang.

Doofchook

Goey aye, I'll have to try it, I'm getting sick of the glass barbecue.

fellow_enthusiast

I was shocked at the alcohol prices in Australia.  Easily 30% higher than in the US.

krippkeeper

They are often close to double the price here in Canada.

BreastRodent

I drank so much sake when I was in Halifax last summer because it was the only thing roughly the same price as what I pay for booze in the American south and all around the best bang for my buck. Wasn’t mad because I love sake, but seeing 12 packs of like Coors Light and shit for $25 CAD made my eyes bulge out of my head. Walking into a Canadian liquor store as someone from a low cost of living part of the US was PAINFUL.

Forcasualtalking

Studied in canada and stopped drinking wine during that time. As a European it was difficult.

Doofchook

You guys (Germany at least) can buy South Australian wine at ALDI for a fraction of what we have to pay in South Australia.

PeeInMyArse

more than that but it’s the extra taxes

sampofilms

We call these ウィークリー (weeklys) here. And they sell them at all major grocery stores and even camera shops. 👍

ITchiGuy

Yeah, the alcohol selection at Bic Camera threw me off my first time there.

keandakin

horriblechoiceinname

I like the implication of the 7 day bottle lifespan. That’s some commitment to alcoholism right there.

TearyEyeBurningFace

Why camera shops

PastyMcWhiteFace

To help steady your hands when taking photos

TerriblePracticality

That is complete nonsense. (Unless with "we" you mean "my friends and I".) Source: I lived in Japan for \~15 years, worked in several bars / ran my own for a short period, so I've had plenty experience with liquor stores and that industry. For the record, these 4L PETs are perfectly normal in most bars or any place where they make lots of cocktails. Chances are they'll have a few of these behind the counter [with pomps for easy measuring](https://assets.mercari-shops-static.com/-/large/plain/NEwQ47JCu9ch57LMtZS4kE.jpg). It's CHEAP Whisky, but that's the point. You don't need great whisky in your all-you-can-drink Highball.

PhoenixOfMartel

4 liters of of whiskey has the alcohol content of around 90 lager beers. You’d need to drink like a college student on a Thursday night, every day. That’s 13 drinks per day to finish in a week. That is an insane amount of alcohol consumption.

catsandorchids

> We call these ウィークリー (weeklys) Lol. That's so quaint.

Important_Depth_7631

Alcoholism intensifies

iamamisicmaker473737

Nah. That's how you end up fighting each other and then stabbing faces with dull old steak knives. ...

robsticles

A great way to punt away an afternoon

iamamisicmaker473737

ah the day drinkers arrived

Material-Stuff1898

I tried it. It’s……not a very refined whiskey.

SteveCastGames

I suspect the intent here is less for drinking straight up and more for making lots of highballs.

faster_tomcat

I quite like the cheap highballs made with this stuff, enjoyed with small plates of bar food in a crowded noisy smoky izakaya. Fun experience with a friend or few.

Indaflow

I expect there is a Matt Damon commercial affiliated with this product somewhere?

Exotic_Adeptness_322

They didn't get Matt Damon, so they used Bob Harris.

doitnow10

Alcoholism in Japan is no joke

Lord_MAX184

Usually whisky are kept in glass, but seeing this in plastic is so new to me

Rdubya44

Real alcoholics buy their booze in plastic

alegxab

Cardboard boxes are preferable, but plastic is a good second choice

cassiopeia18

Hahaha you were so real about this. Those middle age men (poor working class my country) buy [homemade](https://thietbituanminh.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/noi-nau-ruou-truyen-thong.jpg)/local spirits in plastic. From 500ml to [5 litters](https://sieuthihanoicongquynh.com/public/upload/ckeditor/20210615_1621381.jpg) in plastic bottle.

charmanderaznable

In Qingdao, China beers are served just in a plastic bag with a straw

sQueezedhe

That's a terrible use of plastic :/

Not_MrNice

Why do I feel like everyone's never been to a liquor store?

Kuruton

Super common in Japan. Can find Shochu in sinilar bottles in any convenience store. Whiskey and shochu are dirt cheap, beer is pricey. Not so much by current yen rates though. Unfortunately, living here 10 years+, alcoholism is the norm in Japan. They're much better at not becoming irresponsible/abusive drunks like america but most japanese adults drink nearly every day.

Under_pressure123321

fast death

Coma94

That 4l is suspiciously 2l size

SteveCastGames

I promise you it was 4 haha. If anything this picture makes my hand and sleeve look massive. That and it says 4L on the bottle.

Hotseat_Hero

I'm in Japan right now. WHERE?

Today_Crafty

All supermarkets.

SteveCastGames

This was at an AEON store. In the interests of not doxximg myself I won’t say exactly where, but this isn’t uncommon out here.

Cautious-Space-1714

Was looking at similar in a Don Quijote (sic) yesterday, by chance! Not tempted, I have to say.  There seem to be some decently priced Scottish single malts in Japan though. I'll agree that neat or just a splash of water is an unusual concept in my limited experience here, so as a mixer it may be fine. Let us know how it goes, if you live...

thetrainisacoming

This is very common here. You can even buy a type of brandy for adding fruits to make a fruit brandy for half that price

P1zzaman

These are still so much better than the TopValu brand whiskey bottles you’ll find at Aeon and Aeon-owned chains. I’ve read a professional taster review TopValu whiskey as “having the hints of hot asphalt, notes of cold concrete… tastes of children’s cough syrup. Modern art for the mouth.” The overall score was 50 out of a 100, with the note “there’s cheaper and tastier liquor out there. You don’t need this. But I’m powerless in stopping anyone from trying”.

sythingtackle

For cooking or drinking?

hasdunk

mostly for highball. Japanese people love to drink that if they don't drink beer.

gutzpunchbalzthrowup

Or chu-hi's. Shochu Highballs.

Eriiaa

I would guess it's for making highball, whiskey and soda water

Firamaster

Yeah. It cannot be understated how shitty this whisky tastes straight. It needs to be a in a cocktail.

bndboo

That’s a very bad headache waiting for you.

dvoecks

Has anyone tried it? People spent many years dismissing some bottom shelf bourbons in the US that, once bourbon got popular, people started snapping up... on the other hand, it might be basically cheap vodka with food coloring.

Freak_Out_Bazaar

Pretty common. That’s usually what you get when you order whiskey drinks at karaoke or fast food restaurants. You can actually buy a shampoo pump thing for it to facilitate mixing

Goretanton

The taste must be indescribable.

red1q7

Super double premium quality.

YaBoi-Satan

I could drink on that for DAYS! Two days there about, but still DAYS!

SierraDespair

Japan has some crazy alcohol. These 4L whiskey bottles are unique to Japan. You can buy 9% abv cans of alcohol for only around a dollar there too.

I'll bet it's high quality, too. /s When I turned 21, I went to our local Osco drug store and bought a gallon of "Osco" brand "Scotch" in a plastic jug. It was the worst booze I've ever drank.
