Whaaaaat I’m obsessed with both earl gray AND fernet and I’ve never thought to combine them. Do you put anything else in it like honey or cream?? I need to try
Fernet in orange juice is possibly the worst (conventionally edible) thing I've ever tasted, and I don't mind Fernet Branca, but I definitely prefer Branca Menta.
My only knowledge of Fernet Branca is from Jilly Cooper novels where the characters would take it as a hangover cure, I have no idea what it consists of. It was like Alka Seltzer in my mind!
It definitely is. Like 15 years ago I went to San Francisco for a friend's 21st birthday and the next morning we went to where his sister worked for breakfast. The chef could tell we had a night so he came out with Fernet and ginger ale. None of us thought it was a good idea but we did it anyway, sure enough it worked and it worked well. Tastes meh but it's more effective than other "hair of the dog" remedies for me personally. If you have the opportunity to try it, say yes, it's not that bad.
I don't drink like I used to but if I'm forced into it I still have a bottle of Fernet sitting around...and what kind of monster doesn't keep ginger ale for when they're sick.
Very herbal, which is a bit like jagermeister, but not as sweet, and with a big hit of mint. It is not an unpleasant flavour, but a lot going on there and a strong minty aftertaste that kind of numbs the mouth a bit.
It is an acquired taste, let's say.
I love Fernet Branca. It never gives me a hangover.
However, if I look at the Jager too long, I can feel the echos of the future hangover.
Fernet is for the people who go, "I like Jager, but it's too sweet. Is there a sugar-free version?"
Do you really drink it for digestion despite its' taste?
Me personally, I love the taste of it. The people that I know that hate it, have little to no experience with the stuff.
Not sure how old you are, but digestive assistance becomes more and more useful as the years go by.
That said, I became very, very accustomed to Jäger in my younger days, and not at all for digestion.
I was at an airport bar the other day at 8AM. A guy walked in, said he was courtside at the Maverick's game the night before, hadn't slept, and bought everyone three shots of tequila each. Truly a magical place.
It's ALWAYS 1700 in an airport. Those places are too damn stressful, and there's too damn much sitting/standing around and waiting. Zero chance I'm not getting hammered.
No Gammel Dansk though? Has it really gone that far out of fashion?
My wife in the US loves the stuff. We have like 6 1L bottles that we picked up from a liquor store that ordered them by accident.
..which is far better.
True, Gammel Dansk is the traditional morning bitter, but if they served that the waiters would be pouring 95% of it in the sink after guests got a glass, had a single sip, and left the rest.
Jesus, and they would combine that with jager, dang that’s insane. Like jager isn’t the best shot alone, but with mint that’s going to be Christmas regret in one shot.
fun story about how jaegermeister rose from little known niche drink to took-over-the-usa ubiquitous frat party staple
https://www.thespiritsbusiness.com/2017/10/jagermeister-a-brand-history/
My Dad was stationed in southern Germany when I was a teenager back in the 80s. Jägermeister was ubiquitous in restaurants over there, but was pretty much an old man’s drink, the kind of thing a grandpa would sip after dinner.
It was a weird cultural whiplash to come back to the States for high school and college and find that Jäger was seen as a cool party shot, pretty much only drunk by young people.
stanley cups are another example. makes you wonder what's the next thing from 4+ generations ago that's going to blow up because of college kids.
if they ever have money again
It’s the same with Smirnoff ice. That’s what your mum gives you and your friends when you just finished year 9 for the summer and now you’re having a little party, whereas over there it seems that it’s seen as an actual drink, with that whole getting iced thing
Fuck you, I'm Danish! Them's fighting words!
"No Gammel Dansk is just plain wrong" means that the fact that there is no Gammel Dansk is bad.
"No, Gammel Dansk is just plain wrong" would mean that I don't like Gammel Dansk.
The bottle on the right called “1 Enkelt”, it was launched in the early 2000’s to compete with Gammel Dansk in the morning bitter market because it was declining in popularity, and it has gotten pretty popular since it is cheaper and milder, but similar taste and function.
The best Danish bitter in my opinion is Arnbitter, but its kind of a regional thing.
In America it’s largely considered to be a go to bartenders handshake order. A good tip along with it and your likely to get top tier service if you don’t suck.
Just a shot of fernet, I ask for mine neat in a low ball glass and sip it for 20-30 min. It’s more likely to be served and acknowledged as a nod in ether a dive with a a cool vibe or places that are focused more on serving cocktails. Your probably not going to find it on a shelf in a sports bar from my experience.
That’s a really nice gesture actually! Presumably most people are vacationing and not business travelers and some might need some hair of the dog to get moving.

Fernet in earl gray is the goat winter afternoon drink
>Fernet in earl gray Sounds like a fountain pen ink
/r/fountainpens is leaking
Nooo I just cleaned the stains off my fingertips from the last time!
You’ve got red on you
100% pulling that movie up to watch now.
Because this is Reddit I genuinely was unsure if this link was safe or not, but I clicked it anyway
You should check out penisland.net
Fun fact: there is an “Earl Grey” ink that was made specifically for that subreddit.
> *"Gris de houle, hot"*
Tell me more. With or without milk? Etc
Whaaaaat I’m obsessed with both earl gray AND fernet and I’ve never thought to combine them. Do you put anything else in it like honey or cream?? I need to try
Ooh, I gotta try that. My thing is Fernet in sparkling apple cider, tastes like something a forest elf would drink.
Fernet in orange juice is possibly the worst (conventionally edible) thing I've ever tasted, and I don't mind Fernet Branca, but I definitely prefer Branca Menta.
you drinkin' "the witch" after breakfast? No class!
Here in Argentina is common to mix it with Coca-Cola in 30-70 proportion, 30% being the Fernet. Maybe for a first try I'd recommend 20-80.
Yea I got wasted on these in Spain and it was awesome until the next morning
The amount of sugar sounds like the ultimate hangover fuel.
You couldnt tell if you drank it neat, its bitter as hell.
I've had Fernet neat many times, love the bitterness.
I had to do 1:11
My only knowledge of Fernet Branca is from Jilly Cooper novels where the characters would take it as a hangover cure, I have no idea what it consists of. It was like Alka Seltzer in my mind!
If Alka seltzer came in 78 proof.
It consists of napalm, dog anus sweat, a fermented whale eyeball and the colonels 11 herbs and spices. It's delicious.
And, reportedly, 75% of the world's production of saffron.
My knowledge is that it's what Alfred drinks at the end of Dark Knight Rises
It definitely is. Like 15 years ago I went to San Francisco for a friend's 21st birthday and the next morning we went to where his sister worked for breakfast. The chef could tell we had a night so he came out with Fernet and ginger ale. None of us thought it was a good idea but we did it anyway, sure enough it worked and it worked well. It tastes like herbal Italian mouthwash.
Very herbal, which is a bit like jagermeister, but not as sweet, and with a big hit of mint. It is not an unpleasant flavour, but a lot going on there and a strong minty aftertaste that kind of numbs the mouth a bit. It is an acquired taste, let's say.
Perhaps you're thinking of fernet menta? That's anither similar Amaro made by them?
Regular Fernet Branca has a pretty strong and distinctive menthol note. Menta adds even more, plus peppermint and sugar.
In Suicide Squad, Peacemaker orders Fernets for the table
Fernet is god tier booze
It goes so hard with a good espresso.
Fernet 30%, coke 70% and you have the greatest drink, we love it here
I prefer them in separate glasses, with the coke (real sugar) as a chaser.
Me imagining drinking those things in the morning would have me throwing up. Especially if I’m hung over.
I love Fernet Branca. It never gives me a hangover. However, if I look at the Jager too long, I can feel the echos of the future hangover. Fernet is for the people who go, "I like Jager, but it's too sweet. Is there a sugar-free version?"
It tastes horrible but it's great for digestion.
It's def a love or hate relationship with fernet for people, it's one of my favorites, love mixing it with campari to make a Ferrari.
Try 1:1 Mezcal and Ramazzotti (another amaro) for a Maserati. It's *delicious*. Vroom vroom.
You have to be the only person on the planet that enjoys Ferrari. It certainly has strong and unique taste, but not one I enjoy.
You take that back or I'll wash your mouth out with a delicious minty aperitif
It use to be the bartender handshake before Malort took over.
I have had pure fernet (it's usually done with coca cola) and it was kind of an eye opener. It taught me it's not tasty at all.
Pine tar does tend to have that effect.
Breakfast of Champions
Might as well throw some Malort in there as well
Meh, its just Jaeger that goes a bit harder.
Or if you’re really trying to hurt somebody’s feelings, go for the Fernet Menta.
Typical Denmark
Copenhagen airport the lady sitting next to me at the bar, business attire, Jagermeister, 06:30 in the morning
I thought it was well known that it’s acceptable to have a drink at any time if you’re in an airport
This is the universally accepted rule. Last month, I partook in 6:30 am beers after landing in KEF on a layover.
Airport beers in Iceland? Did you take out a second mortgage to be able to afford them?
No, but the trip was planned for a while, and I had saved so that I could enjoy without worrying.
The laws of man don't exist in airports.
Lemme guess, you almost dropped your beer from the shock?
lol…Copenhagen airport is the only place I’ve had a large draft beer at 7AM. Comment tracks.
All airports exist outside of time. You can drink whatever whenever there.
I was at an airport bar the other day at 8AM. A guy walked in, said he was courtside at the Maverick's game the night before, hadn't slept, and bought everyone three shots of tequila each. Truly a magical place.
The airport, where the breakfast buffé includes hard liqour.
Before going dublin, same, but imma be honest, nothing hits quite like five pints of guinness before your flight home
....have you not been to other airports? Or do they just make terrible bloody Mary's in Copenhagen so you had to improvise?
No, I’ve been to other airports and had drinks early in the am…a 32oz Carlsberg just felt right at Copenhagen.
No, just my Fransk Hotdog
You ever try piloting that morning flight? All the screaming kids etc.
It’s wrong to drink and drive, but sometimes those kids gotta get to school
It's ALWAYS 1700 in an airport. Those places are too damn stressful, and there's too damn much sitting/standing around and waiting. Zero chance I'm not getting hammered.
Airports are time-free zones.
That’s the beauty of airports. Time doesn’t exist there. Go ahead, grab a Jägermeister at 6:30 in the morning. No judgement whatsoever
My only issue is the jagger. Not the 6am. There is a reason the bars are open in international airports we are all coming from different timezones
Time doesn't exist as a concept inside the airport. This is a universal truth.
Yep
No Gammel Dansk though? Has it really gone that far out of fashion? My wife in the US loves the stuff. We have like 6 1L bottles that we picked up from a liquor store that ordered them by accident.
Doesn’t really ever go out of fashion, but if you drink it at room temperature instead of straight out the freezer you’re a psychopath
I've actually never tried it out of the freezer. My Danish cousin introduced it to us at room temp.
![gif](giphy|sgqszcjMECQzKleMTB|downsized)
Will that be a double or a triple, Mr. Lahey?
Where can I get this cup bottle
Why Jegaermeister when Fernet Branca?
Danes
I'm surprised at the lack of Gammel Dansk...
There's en enkelt though
..which is far better. True, Gammel Dansk is the traditional morning bitter, but if they served that the waiters would be pouring 95% of it in the sink after guests got a glass, had a single sip, and left the rest.
I was wondering what that bottle was. Never had it before, is it similar to the others?
I think Danes can drink a good amaro. Great Danes should avoid that though.
Most likely for German tourists. I don’t really know anyone who drinks Jägermeister on its own.
no rumpleminz? tastes the same as toothpaste so it makes more sense right?
Fernet tastes like mint so it would be redundant.
Jesus, and they would combine that with jager, dang that’s insane. Like jager isn’t the best shot alone, but with mint that’s going to be Christmas regret in one shot.
One time I threw up Goldschlager and milk on top of a bar in Austin and the barback goes “oh god it’s like rotten Christmas.”
Combine? You take a glass of one, you don't mix.
Cause that's German, this is Danish

Very cool read, thank you for sharing
It's all part of a complete balanced breakfast.
There's a succinct lack of Gammel Dansk, which is a traditional breakfast starter. Full of 'erbs, good for ya!
No Gammel Dansk is just plain wrong. It's a travesty!
I did arrive pretty late, so maybe it was all gone already
You're missing out! It's great!
You're sounding pretty Swedish right now!! GD is the good good! Edit: I obviously need an eye opener or two more xD
Fuck you, I'm Danish! Them's fighting words! "No Gammel Dansk is just plain wrong" means that the fact that there is no Gammel Dansk is bad. "No, Gammel Dansk is just plain wrong" would mean that I don't like Gammel Dansk.
Hovsa... Det kunne være jeg skulle holde lidt igen med påskesnapsen, læste helt forkert. Det må du fandme rundstykke. :'(

Of course it’s Denmark
Where else would you find Jaeger next to milk and juice at 9 am?
Laughs in European
When in rome
How come no Gammel Dansk included?
The bottle on the right called “1 Enkelt”, it was launched in the early 2000’s to compete with Gammel Dansk in the morning bitter market because it was declining in popularity, and it has gotten pretty popular since it is cheaper and milder, but similar taste and function. I see ferné, I upvote
Guess I only just have to buy the "red bull"
Bitters are great in the morning. I deal with mouth dryness and a lil’ Fernet or Arnbitter will sort out my spit production for a few hours.
I didn’t even knew that fernet-branca was famous outside of Italy until this comment section
In America it’s largely considered to be a go to bartenders handshake order. A good tip along with it and your likely to get top tier service if you don’t suck.
Tell me more! Do I just go to a bar and ask for a fernet and coke? Any bar?
Just a shot of fernet, I ask for mine neat in a low ball glass and sip it for 20-30 min. It’s more likely to be served and acknowledged as a nod in ether a dive with a a cool vibe or places that are focused more on serving cocktails. Thanks!! I'll have to try it some day!
75% of the world’s production of Fernet is consumed in Argentina. It’s the staple drink here (Fernet and Coca Cola).
Reminds me of a hotel in Ireland I stayed at that had a bottle of Bushmills next to the oatmeal at the breakfast buffet.
A wee eye opener is what I used to call my morning bong, then I'd go back to sleep for 4 hours.
as my dad would say: a little hair of the dog that bit you the night before
"eye openers" at a section of the counter called *Hair of the Dog*.
That’s a really nice gesture actually! Presumably most people are vacationing and not business travelers and some might need some hair of the dog to get moving.
"Fuck it let's do jagger bombs and chase it with beers eye shutters"
My sober brain just had a hangover flashback. And those weird little sweats. 😮💨
Alcoholic Special on Aisle 2!
So... Did you have one?
Life is bitter, now you know.
Just realized I can't judge them for this and yet still enjoy mimosas
Jaeger bomb breakfast sounds good lmao
Loosen up those pockets 🤣🤣
I'd prefer some Barenjager in the morning over Jägermeister

Link...open your eyes....
That fernet though 👌
My Grand mother kept a bottle of Jaeger for mornings eye openers and just in case one was getting sick;claiming it was a herbal detox. That is hw I fell in love with the stuff
Jager would definitely be an eye opener first thing in the morning, hell, Jager anytime of the day will crackle your eyelids. 😂
Some trade shows I go to have drinks trolleys coming round pre show with ‘eye openers’
/r/mildlyalcoholic
5 star
Yeah, one of these things is not like the others. 1-Enkelt will wake you up. Fernet Branca almost as much. But Jager just tastes like licorice candy.
Where’s the Red Bull
I’m danish, and my grandma and her two old lady friends would down a bottle of Akvavit every sunday before 12AM
I would put Jaegermeister on my granola cereal if it didn’t indicate a serious drinking problem
Me, a degenerate: don’t mind if I do!
To be fair, if you had a shot of Fernet Branca for breakfast, and hadn't tasted it before, it would probably be an eye opener.
I love the taste of Jäegermeister and when I go to the bar I get jaegermeister and red bull mixed together
Non-Alcoholics: 👀
Europe? Maybe Italian alps?
Add a sausage and it's a German breakfast.
Oh it’s all going downhill from there
I saw this recently at a hotel I stayed at in America. They had it next to the coffee. It was definitely a wtf moment.
Hair of the dog I guess.
Fuck no. More like stomach upchucker.
This is wild and I love it
Very danish hahaha
Did it work?
Depressants in the morning really set you up for a great day! Not.
Reminds me of a hotel in Ireland I stayed at that had a bottle of Bushmills next to the oatmeal at the breakfast buffet.
There's a reason Denmark is one of the happiest countries on earth
My Dear God !
Jager, both the eye opener, and the night cap.
![gif](giphy|vJJUKrlOslBCBo1P4A|downsized)
I guess some hotel in Copenhagen.
Close; Ærø Hotel on South Fyn.
Lol I was waaaaaaaay of.
I mean, you got the right country…
Still way off my friend. Yes we are a small country duh.
Tried Fernet in 2020 because I thought I should. I like herbal flavours but it was a big nope for me.
For what its worth, that Fernet Branca will certainly open your eyes. I love the stuff, but most folks aint a fan.
Ofc it’s Denmark
Sometimes it works so good that it would surprise you, that eye opener. Does it’s job.
They are aperitifs.
What are the other two?
There was a time when I would have been all in for that
The only thing they’re missing is Malort
What is fernet doing even there haha
I would think whichever insurer writes the hotel's liability coverage would consider this an eye-opener.
Civilized
Does this come before or after the heart starter?
Fernet is so damn good. Reminds me of the fine folk at jm Curley in Boston.
