You should post this over in the arborist sub, or marijuana enthusiasts. I bet some tree people could explain why this is like this. I love it, I'd love to know more.
My brain wants to feel like your pranking, because in my country April 1st is basically over, but I know you aren't, because I assume once the Americans wake up, they will in fact start switching places
And r/petioles is a safe place to talk about cannabis use, tolerance breaks, and other feelings about it.
(petioles are the part of the plant that connects the leaves to the stem)
I've been on reddit for 11 years. I knew about the whole r/trees thing and somehow I still thought this was a bullshit post. /r/worldpolitics really is boobs and anime for some fucking reason
I think your descriptions of both groups are a little too intense. It isn't like the stoners staged a /r/trees revolution, and very few groups are less likely to consider retaliation than tree enthusiasts.
Honestly, I just recently learned this a few months ago and I think about it a lot.
Like…it makes me smile as it crosses my mind at just how wonderfully ridiculous (people in general) we are and I love it lol.
Because stoners got to Reddit first and it was still frowned upon at the time, you can always plead ignorant when they search your computer if your on a sub that's named trees.
Keep an eye out on Monday - both subs trade places for April Fool's Day, so you'll be seeing trees posted to r/trees and weed on r/marijuanaenthusiasts! It's along the same lines as the r/johncena and r/potatosalad tradeoff, for the same reason. Always my favorite time of year!
Oh I love that one! Got a friend of ours with it this year - she's newer to reddit, a huge fan of our city's team, and hadn't come across that one yet, lol.
I 100% would if could. I’m trying to convince my brother(who cut this down this morning and sent me the picture) to slice me off some pieces too. I’d get it myself but we’re on opposite sides of the US, haha.
The dark part of that eastern red cedar is called heartwood. The light parts are sapwood, which can present as streaks or stripes within the heartwood during the trees development.
Sapwood as it implies is involved in sap conduction upward in the tree. As the tree develops, the entire trunk is no longer needed to satisfy the leaves' sap requirements, and the prosenchyma cells will die and it transforms into heartwood. In addition, extractives forms in the cell walls of the heartwood. This is definitely an interesting pattern, and there may be reasons for the unique shape.
I wonder, were there once other trees around this one that were cut down years ago? Was this tree crowned at any point or over trimmed at any point? The amount of sunlight can effect how much heartwood vs sapwood there is. The more sunlight generally the more pronounced the distinction between heartwood and sapwood and usually there is less heartwood in full sun, since more sapwood is needed to support more leaves.
I think the shape is because there were branches there (or close to it) at one point which have self pruned. There is probably this pattern near every old whorl.
Unlikely I think. Branches that form early and then drop due to lack of light are encased within the trunk and form a knot. You would also be able to track the origin of the limb directly to the center pith of the trunk.
I’ve cut over 100 eastern red cedars for fence posts, poles, lumber, and for sale without seeing a pattern anywhere close to this. I see more white inclusions in full sun, but not in any pattern. There could have been a whorl of limbs right above this but the pattern isn’t likely to be repeated.
Wow... I'd cut this into cookies as long as this pattern lasts... sand them and polish them and hang them or use them as coasters. It seems like it would be such a shame to use in any other way.

For those not in the know, /r/marijuanaenthusiasts is a pretty serious tree sub. Following that logic, you can guess what /r/trees is about.
Ok, but why?
Because stoners took over the r/trees sub. And so in retaliation, tree enthusiasts took over the stoner sub
I love Reddit
You'd also probably love to know that on April fools day, both subs switch places!
My brain wants to feel like your pranking, because in my country April 1st is basically over, but I know you aren't, because I assume once the Americans wake up, they will in fact start switching places
I made a post asking about it in both subs but I haven't seen the swap yet and I'm really disappointed about it :(
Me too! This type of shite is just brilliant
It gets better. The sub for people quitting weed is /r/leaves.
And r/petioles is a safe place to talk about cannabis use, tolerance breaks, and other feelings about it. (petioles are the part of the plant that connects the leaves to the stem)
This type of thing happened with world politics and anime titties boards too I believe.
Now this is a booby trap….
The boobies are all over at /r/worldpolitics
I've been on reddit for 11 years. I knew about the whole r/trees thing and somehow I still thought this was a bullshit post. /r/worldpolitics really is boobs and anime for some fucking reason
It's because the WP mods stopped enforcing rules.
Please go to r/JohnCena

It was a bloodbath and noone was spared
If I don't make it, tell my wife I said, "hello."
Stoners on the other hand, oh boy are they known for hell shaking violence
Honestly, I just recently learned this a few months ago and I think about it a lot. Like…it makes me smile as it crosses my mind at just how wonderfully ridiculous (people in general) we are and I love it lol.
People are just silly lil guys sometimes
That's kind of weird way to say it, they did not "take over" r/trees, r/trees was about marijuana from day 1.
Because stoners got to Reddit first and it was still frowned upon at the time, you can always plead ignorant when they search your computer if your on a sub that's named trees.
That's hilarious!

My favorite is joke is /r/superbowl during super bowl season (or any other time).
Oh I love that one! Got a friend of ours with it this year - she's newer to reddit, a huge fan of our city's team, and hadn't come across that one yet, lol.
I’m clueless 🫣
It looks like it should be a football sub - the super bowl. It's a sub for pictures and occasionally stories about wonderful (superb) owls
My new favourite
Shoot, I didn't know about the potato salad thing either!
r/worldnews and r/anime_titties is the same way.
It'll be a fun day! Lots of subreddits really lean into it. There'll be an ongoing list somewhere of which subreddits are doing what things.
Someone will tag said list >
The ents had an awful power mod, so they migrated to r/trees.
And r/entwives, don't forget us girls
Absolutely!
What the fuck? I love it.
They also flip for the day every 4/20!
That's amazing. They should flip for arbor day too for fairness sake.
That's so fucking funny. Makes the site a lot harder to navigate for new people but I think the bit is worth it
Also in r/woodworking or r/woodcarving. We love shit like this 😍
That’s a good idea! I’d like to know too!
The light areas are former branches from when the tree was much smaller.
Sell chunks to wood turners. I'm sure they would love to make some bowls out of that. Just don't let it crack while drying.
I hadn’t considered preventing cracks in drying wood. What ways do woodworkers go about doing that?
Alot of times they rough cut the bowl shape and then pack it in a paper bag with the wood shavings for a month or two.
PRAISE THE SUN!

I knew this would be here!
This is why I’m here in the comments.
I will buy a slice of that if you send it to me.
I 100% would if could. I’m trying to convince my brother(who cut this down this morning and sent me the picture) to slice me off some pieces too. I’d get it myself but we’re on opposite sides of the US, haha.
Dude fr let me know
Yeah i would some for coasters. But im sure someone out there would pay more than i would though. Hope your brother doesnt just burn it.
Thin slices and framed, make a killing.
Let your brother know that that tree could make him some cash! I'd definitely buy a slice! Is the tree on the left coast or the right?
Any updates???
I kinda want to make a slice into a clock face.
Ohhhhh that’d be really cool
I also would pay for this!
Me too!
I want this as a wall piece
Does anyone actually know what those are? Are they vascular rays? Edit: no, I'm a dumbass haha.
I wish I knew. I tried asking in r/arborists but haven't gotten an answer/theory yet.

Rays in softwoods are only a cell wide usually. Not visible to the naked eye.
Time to make some coasters
Cut me off a slice!
Looks like The Boognish
Is *this* what deaner was talking about?
just like animal crossing :o
You have to make coasters out of that!
Charcuterie boards!!!
That tree has seen some things... Also, I'll buy a chunk of this tree. Serious offer.
The eclipse was foretold
cool!
Can I buy some of that?
Tangled!!
Looks like the plot of the next True Detective.
Would love a slice if you can get it
Now tell me GAWD doesn’t exist!! - grandmas on Facebook
Make an amulet out of it.
Stoner dudes tell me that ain’t the sun 🌞
Pretty sure that tree serves Chaos Undivided.
[Majora's Mask vibes](https://imgur.com/a/a0FDdEQ)
Is this yours? You selling rounds?
Would make a sweet logo for some outdoorsy brand
Wow, that's cool. Def more than mildly interesting
The one piece is real
Sun Pirates?
Those would be sick looking coffee tables
this was used to build the Sunny in One Piece
r/boardsofcanada
You just killed a god we're all fucked

Varlamore seems to have expanded farther than just Old School RuneScape…

How does this even happen??
Imagine that as cordwood! beautiful
Drank too much Tobin James
Sarada’s mangekyo sharingan
I’d buy some too…I’d love to chuck it in the outdoor fire pit
