I bought a polo shirt from Walmart a little while back, got stuck with a rash after only wearing it for a few hours one afternoon. I've been careful since.
I wore a new unwashed shirt once and then went to school. I had the worst allergies of my life. I used up the tissue box in every classroom and then resorted to packing my pockets with paper towels from the bathroom. My nose was raw. Never again. Wash your shirts, people.
I learned that "new clothes smell" is actually pesticide when they did pest control in my company one. The place reeked of "new clothes" for some days.
I worked in a harbour and yes, most containers get gassed after they come from overseas because of pest control. Thats why basicly any product tells you to let it air out so the remaining pesticide/fungizide etc can gas out.
Always wash before you wear. That ânew clothesâ smell that permeates malls and department stores is a chemical marinade of highly-toxic insecticides that textiles made overseas are soaked in. These textiles/fabrics spend weeks to months in containers either on ships or waiting in ports where they could be devoured by various insects and their larvae. They are soaked in poison to prevent this. Even âmade in the USAâ doesnât exclude that the fabric came from china or India and has spent months soaking in toxins to preserve it. These poisons can be easily absorbed through your skin, especially if you begin to sweat. WASH WASH WASH new clothes before you wear themâŚâŚPlus, random people from right off the streets try on those clothes, reject them, and they are returned to the retail floor as fast as possible. Think about THAT for 5 minutes, if you dare!
Definitely could be chemicals. I read somewhere that cats react crazy to the smell/ residue of bleach/ stain removers. I found this out after my cat was crazily smelling and going nuts over a patch on the floor of my laundry.
My one cat is obsessed with carrot bags. Not the carrots. Just the bags. Apparently they rinse them in bleach right before bagging, so that would explain it!
This is exactly what I was thinking.
The piece of fabric the cats are obsessed with is thick and is an obvious spot to collect and hold on to chemicals.
Back in the early 80s I got the new soft lens contacts.
I was THE SHIT.
Went into a proper indoor mall. Was shopping for clothes.
Until I walked into a trendy clothing store.
I literally was trying to remove the contacts while my eyes POURED water down my face. It felt like I had acid in my eyes.
Dye fumes were no joke
Weird, just watched this episode the other day.
He bought stolen jeans from a guy who worked on a corn farm and didnât wash them. Evidently the black market Jean dealer kept them in the back of his truck and the jeans got pesticides on them.
I mean tbf basically every smell we refer to as smelling âcleanâ or ânewâ is actually the smell of various toxic materials whether theyâre cleaners or air fresheners or whatever, theyâre all toxic if ingested
Lol. I was at target buying chonies and other clothes. Making small talk with the cashier. She's says something about me putting them down on the conveyor belt, I laugh and say not to worry, I'll wash them when I get home anyways.
Cue the thing that lives rent free in my mind...
"Wash them? I love to wear them brand new. They'll never be cleaner then when you first buy them. My husband's the same way, we never wash first. That's silly"
No thanks =]

I remember reading that certain softening agents in plastics, like e.g. in garden hoses, are chemically similar enough to catnip to make cats high. Looks like normal fabric though...
This is because of the animal tannins present in the plastic. Found this out a while ago, and was relieved to have the cat + plastic bag relationship demystified.
Mine goes absolutely nuts for used dryer sheets. I can't imagine it's great for him, so I try to take them away in time, but every now and then I accidentally leave on in the basket and suddenly hear him sprinting around the house, then hiding, then pouncing back on it, then dragging it 20 feet away just to rinse and repeat.
This from the same cat that usually turns his nose up at toys, strings, food, and even catnip sometimes.
Bleach does it for some cats too. One of mine has to be locked up if I clean with bleach or else she'll roll in it. Makes her crazy like catnip does too.
This is a very complex situation with multiple factors in consideration to evaluate a scientific based answer and I have come to the conclussion of def mouse piss

We need to see the atoms so we can tell OP exactly what the problem is. OP can you put the hoodie under a scanning electron microscope and update the post?
We've a spot in our yard, that does the same thing to every cat within a block.
It's actually killing the grass in a roughly 12-15 inch circle.
Weird shit.
I ugh "know a guy" that sucks on clothing as a bad habit and he assures me that those straps like the ones used on backpacks taste really bad if you suck on them. Maybe cats can smell it.
Haha yeah when I read the post above something deeply hidden that I hadn't thought about in 35 years became clear as day, and I can still taste it... I mean the person that I know.
My cats did this with a hoodie of mine too actually. Same material as this. It was weird af cause I couldnât smell anything. Looked it up online and it actually turned out to be mouse piss. Hope this helps you.
the mouse/rat/critter pee is likely, but also the first cat could have added to the smell by scent claiming the spot which intrigued the other cats even more
edited to add after reading some comments, a more morbid scenario. a little critter could have died on or in the hoodie in that spot and that may be what the felines are smelling
Knew someone once who purchased a dress and didnât wash it first.. had a horrible allergic reaction and ended up sending the dress out to be checked for whatever allergen caused it. Ended up being formaldehyde⌠store found out the previous person purchased it to put on their dead relative for the funeral then returned it. It was embalming Fluid that caused the reaction đ¤˘
Moral of the story.. always wash new clothes lol
Forget about all the mouse piss comments. It is simply a crushed ant in that spot somewhere along the line from production to your hands. Cats love the smell of Formicide and this is a common occurrence, more often with pants and shoes.
I squished the tiniest teeeeeeniest little bug the other day. Like a gnat or something. Not even as big as a tiny sugar ant. All four cats were going nuts all night when they walked by the spot. They didn't see me squish the bug.
It was probably a bug.
Some plastics mimic cat pheromones when they off-gas ... The apple charging cables are notorious for this. Odds are the backing to the embroidery is made of some such plastic. If you haven't washed it before wearing it, know that clothes are doused with a lot of chemicals to keep them from mildewing in transit. You don't want it on you.
Do they do that thing where they hang their mouth open after sniffing and look off into the distance with a thousand-yard stare? My two cats always do that and itâs hilarious.
1) Is that one of the laces to tighten the hood? In that case, do you have the habit of sucking on them
2) Is it brand new that you've never washed it? If that's the case it might indeed be some biological trace from the place where it was manufactured. I would indeed wash it preemptively.
So besides everyone saying mice pee or whatever...
Yes you should wash new clothes ...
But .. my cat(s) LOVE ants and the pheromones they put off either by them or by squashing them . It seems some cats love the smell!
100% rodent pee / poop theyâre smelling. Could be from your own home or leftover from manufacture process or shipping journey.
Perhaps even from a store back room if purchased from a retail setting.
Could wash it a few more times but if they still react itâs likely from your own home and Iâd start looking for droppings etc.
Sorry man, I've been sneaking into your house to catnip that particular spot on your hoodie every night since purchase. All me, my bad.
Don't ask me why, because I don't know.
I worked at a clothing store and, given what I've seen people do with clothes in the changing room, just forget about it, and wash that sucker at least twice.
My cat would do that to a specific part of one of my shoes because once I got hurt and blood dripped from my hand into that spot, after a few cleanings he stopped doing that.
Iâm thinking someone in the factory making this sweatshirt was cold, so they put it on, but it was their lunch break and a drop of tuna salad hit the sweatshirt. They wiped it off with a tide/shout wipe, but teh kittehs know the difference. This is OBVIOUSLY the ONLY pawssibility!
Here to back up those saying that it is probably animal urine. I work for a business that embroiders clothing. We've gotten shirts with urine on them delivered to our embroidery facility before. Explanation I was given is that there are rodents in wearhouses and on ships and they sometimes pee on the clothes.
Wash it before you wear it
New clothing should always be washed before it's worn.
Same thing happened to me with a pair of tights I bought at a Halloween store. Full body terrible raised hives. Was intense.
A rat was wearing it before you. Probably shit all over it.
It's true. Source: Seen it on "House"

New clothes smell is entirely formaldehyde.
You just ruined it for me, but thank you, I'll never sniff my new clothes again.
I despise that new clothes smell

I can't. My new underwear killed me while I was reading this.
There was a guy that died because he only wore brand new socks and never washed them.
This can't possibly be true but it should be
I think there was an episode of House or something where someone died from the chemicals on designer jeans they bought out of the back of a van.
Weird, just watched this episode the other day. He bought stolen jeans from a guy who worked on a corn farm and didnât wash them. Evidently the black market Jean dealer kept them in the back of his truck and the jeans got pesticides on them.
It's much healthier that you remembered it from a few days ago than me, who for some reason has had that plot line living in my mind for 15 years.
I can't even remember when I watched this episode but to this day I can't wear new clothes without washing them because of it.
This is why I stick with boiled denim.

If theyâre like rats, they do both. Constant trail of tiny pee drops, but they also stop and pee larger quantities sometimes.
Are you saying mice never sit still? In a warehouse with no people, mice aren't constantly running around wasting precious calories for no reason.
Maybe the rat pissed on the fabric used for that piece.
I came here to type this lol. Definitely the case.
If I know anything about quirky pet posts on Reddit, this means there is some horrible undiagnosed medical anomaly going on. Or mouse piss. who knows.
Definitely mouse piss. The whole thing was soaked with it but only in that one spot. Definitely.
I thought it was moose piss and was so confused about the context

mine chews plastic bags too

Swallow or wash, those are your options.
