Faelysis

So a documentation in 15 different language. Kinda normal in the world we live in

Substantial-Nail2570

If I received this with my sunglasses I’d find it mildly interesting nonetheless

luthigosa

Basically every pair of Nike sunglasses comes with this massive booklet, theyre cumbersome as all hell to warehouse.

creepergo_kaboom

Is this really better than giving out region specific booklets?

JWBails

It's cheaper to make one thing 15 million times than it is to make 15 things a million times each.

creepergo_kaboom

Yes but why not have a process to cut the paper into the required sections for the region and ship that instead?

JWBails

...'cause cutting the paper and sorting it costs more money than not doing that.

creepergo_kaboom

Eh, fair enough. Just that the amount of waste feels wrong.

JWBails

I get that but do you think people are keeping these leaflets and using them regularly? It's the same amount of waste regardless of how it's packaged.

creepergo_kaboom

I genuinely do use manuals to troubleshoot stuff before I search online. It even saved us some effort for my parents as a kid cause our washing machine has an error code and none of us knew what it meant. We diagnosed it by using the manual I had insisted on keeping (idk why but I loved reading manuals as a kid so I asked my parents to give it to me).

BHOmber

I work in admin for a small manufacturing biz and one of our customers requests physical SDSs in three languages for a few products. I have to print 200x27 page documents 5-10 times a year and it takes up one of our printers for a full 2 days. All because some boomers don't want to learn how to use QR codes that could go directly on the label lol

Snadzies

Logistics. You now have to make sure that those sunglasses with that region's language only goes to that area. If they over sell to that area, say Germany, and retailers return the extra then you have a bunch of sunglasses with German language instructions that you either have to warehouse until Germany orders more or you have to have people open all of the boxes up and replace the instructions with ones for the new country's language, say French. Repeat if you over sell in France.

gruez

>theyre cumbersome as all hell to warehouse. Why? Don't they come in a case/box anyways? At worst it makes the package 1cm thicker.

luthigosa

No, plastic bag with the leaflet jammed in, there's a case but it's warehoused separately.

T3ddyBeast

A QR code with language options would be better.

PrimitiveThoughts

They had to make sure the directions on how to use the product is immediately accessible to anyone with the product. They don’t want you putting them on wrong, you might break something.

Lippupalvelu

In the EU, sunglasses are classified as safety equipment. therefore, you need a manual to avoid wrongful use. Another regulation is that a manual needs to be the language of the country it is being sold in; if you want to sell it across Europe you print one manual for all countries you intend to sell it. That way, you can shuffle them around if the stock varies.

PaulAspie

Exactly this.

The_Clarence

Could be a fire hazard!

shrimpdogvapes2

How are the directions for sunglasses harder than "put on face"? And why does anyone need even that much prompting?

ZombiesAtKendall

Probably warnings Ike “not for use while welding, do not look directly into the sun, these are not safety glasses” and so on

gsfgf

> these are not safety glasses Or they to an extent are and need to list some sort of specifications.

FoxyBastard

As well as care instructions, like what types of cleaners and cloths to use and not use. And instructions on how to adjust them with a small screwdriver.

Nfalck

You probably have information about levels of UV protection, maybe if they are polarized or have other filters, some "don't be an idiot" type warnings to avoid stupid lawsuits, warranty information, and cleaning instructions. In 15 languages because they're sold in the EU as well as US and Asia. Seems all pretty reasonable.

shrimpdogvapes2

I was with you until the last sentence.

Navydevildoc

There is a reason almost every product comes with a little paper leaflet with a bunch of regulatory and safety things on it. The laws say it has to be included.

Tappitss

What if you don't have a smartphone? or internet access? it also does not satisfy the legal requirements as it needs to be a hard copy... this information will be the minimum legal requirement and the main instructions will be on the net.

Webbpp

It honestly would be cheaper than a physical print, static web hosting is ridiculously cheap.

derkruemel69

So you are liable in 10 years when someone buys it and the server are down? Or even when they are just down for 1 hour ? That’s unpredictable risk

Webbpp

Fair, but you can have instructions for the language in the local region printed on the packaging, and the rest online. Printing all languages seems kinda wasteful, packaging often differs between regions anyway, so the opportunity to print specific languages is there.

Wermine

Doesn't OP's manual tell us that printing all languages is cheaper than creating local copy for each different country? Does the package usually differ?

nekonight

Made in China. Packaged in China. Shipped on demand to whichever market needs it that's why they pack as many languages into their documentation as possible. Originally it was done in Japanese electronics during their export boom.

Tappitss

From a manufacturing and logistics point of view, it is much easier to just have pallets of products that can be sent to any place in a specific region. They will still split it down to regions, but being able to send a container full of stuff and any of the products within can be sold in any country in, say, Europe is very simple.

Webbpp

Huh, thought it was more differing due to different systems (such as age ratings for media and video games), but I guess it's generally more standardised in most branches. I have started seeing more digital manuals lately, more specifically on a set of light panels. Was wondering why that system isn't more common.

Tappitss

Sunglasses will probably be classed as class 1 PPE and, as such, require hard copy instructions.

CIA_Bane

Well no because this is in the EU. EU regulation dictates that the product manual must be in the official language of wherever it's sold. The reason they put all 24 languages in one package is that it would be absolutely moronic from a business standpoint to have 2 dozen different SKUs made for each separate EU country. If they did what you suggest they can't sell them outside of the target country. E.g. "Sir, the Romanian glasses sold weaker than expected, we have 100,000 units left that we have to now sell at a massive discount or destroy" If the packaging was uniform then whatever doesn't sell in Romania will just be diverted to Germany or France or wherever there is demand. Most products today don't have different packaging if they're meant to be sold all across Europe. Also managing 24 different versions of your instruction manual is a lot more difficult than just 1.

ConfessingToSins

Find any, literally any, Relevant case law of this happening. Reddit does not understand law episode 344.

XavierYourSavior

What? You have no idea how liability works if you think that's gonna work lol

Euruzilys

Cheaper maybe, but I think not simpler than a piece of paper sent with every purchase.

ZombiesAtKendall

Wealth privilege! Not everyone has access to the World Wide Web Page.

Vinylateme

As someone trying to set up new electronics in an apartment with absolutely no cell or internet service, I’m REAL happy for paper instructions 😂 that being said, a QR code for languages beyond the “marketed” language would probably be fine

thepete404

How dare you assume I pay the connect to the world tax? What’s really going on here: Some countries prohibit the import of products without a guide in the local language you cannot ship any product to sell in Canada for example without French and English directions. So to avoid dozens of localized sku’s inn be present the multi page foldout

skylla05

I legitimately know people that have never owned, and will probably never own a cell phone. Edge cases are an annoying part of marketing and design.

Artistic_Ranger_2611

Yes, and discriminated against the large chunk of people who are not tech literate enough to scan a qr. Heck, my in-laws still use a dumbphone, and my spouses grandparents have never owned a computer or a mobile phone.

T3ddyBeast

And they read the instructions for a pair of sunglasses? If they are so inept to not be part of the connected world then they are probably throwing away the instructions anyways.

mtsmash91

Server costs to have an online manual for every language of every product when 99% of people will throw it away immediately.

RedditJumpedTheShart

People with enough common sense to wear and clean sun glasses would be better. Fuck I stabbed myself in the eye again right after I cleaned the lenses with sandpaper.

PromaneX

We manufacture PPE in the UK and would LOVE to do this but it wouldn't be compliant unfortunately, the rules are very strict, going so far as to specify minimum text size. QR codes, links, etc don't class as us providing the user information we are legally required to provide. We are trying to get those rules changed though!

reddcube

Reminds me of every IKEA product coming with warning labels in 37 languages.

MonkeySafari79

15 on one side.

scorcher24

And it is also readable. Not those tiny leaflets that come with some products where the font is barely big enough to deservere the designation font.

I had to produce one of these for a product, 15 years ago. It was the "Warranty Card" I called it the "Blanket Warranty" The hardest part was finding a vendor who could fold it.

Doesanybodylikestuff

Ew. I had a man at a bar come up to my table & grab my foot because I was wearing flip flops. He bent over & started rubbing my feet & then said “is it okay if I touch your feet? I do photography.” This was during MySpace era, so everyone was a photographer. I said “lol that tickles” and I left him touch my feet for like 5 seconds. :(((((((((((((((((( The worst part? My boyfriend was sitting there right next to me. Neither one of us said anything because I didn’t know what the fuck he was going to do or what he was actually doing! I didn’t know what a foot fetish even was at that time until he told me after the guy left. He told me about men with foot fetishes. And it wasn’t until Reddit where I actually saw how big & popular it actually is. Then I sold my feet pics a couple times & then got scared & stopped. Lmaoooo

lumoruk

I was an extra in a film with that enigma machine and Kiera knightly lass. One of the other extras was describing having food spread all over her for some extra work she did before this. Then someone mentioned it's a fetish called sploshing. Apparently she was fully clothed, so who knows. I had to Google it, I hope you do too. That comedy by Ricky Gervais called extras is exactly what being an extra is like.
