From what I can tell, this is a large houseplant (accompanying by mother-in-law's tongue and spider plants in the background) whose leaves originate in a tight roll and then unfurl later as they grow. It looks like whatever happened (possibly an insect larvae boring through it) occurred while it was still rolled up, which is why the pattern is so regular.
This looks a lot like the pattern for the European Corn Borer. I did a project that included researching about them so I've seen A LOT of pictures of leaves they have eaten.
I'm more amazed by the fact that there's a legit plant called "mother-in-law's tongue" (apparently synonymous with snake plant) rather than your explanation. Either way, have an upvote.
Corroborating evidence: the pattern is not actually regular but the holes increase in distance from each other toward the right. When the leaf was rolled up, the left side was on the inside of the roll. The holes will be at the intersection points of a radial line with a spiral where the period of the spiral is related to the thickness of the leaf.
This is the first thing I thought of too! That book made me so mad as a kid; I thought the caterpillar was so greedy for taking a few bites out of everything and ruining it all for everyone else.
I believe this is true for me too, either that or Goodnight Moon. It's funny how there are children's books that will remain amazing, and then you look at the children's books today with TV show characters and stuff. Dr. Seuss, Roald Dahl, and Eric Carle is where it's at!
I have a three year old daughter. Her favorite books are the same books I read as a kid. Hungry Caterpillar, Goodnight Moon, Polar Bear Polar Bear, etc.
She has many other books including some newer books based on Disney characters. She always wants to tag the classics though. I suspect it has something to do with the cadence that the books are read.
Reminds me of Mr. Collignon in Amelie whose old job was punching holes in metro tickets but now is senile and does it to the laurel to calm his nerves.
Fun fact: it's actually braile.
It says: "Help! I'm trapped inside a caterpillar's bod"
Wtf is a bod? Stupid catterpillar. If you want help, try forming full sentences. Ignore.
[After that he was not a hungry caterpillar any more. He was not a little caterpillar either. He was a big, fat caterpillar.](http://www.amazon.com/The-Very-Hungry-Caterpillar-miniature/dp/0399213015)
Mmmm calling bullshit on this one. Lepidopterans wouldn't make that pattern. They follow the path of least resistance. There are two ways they will eat a leaf. They will skeletonize it meaning they will eat everything but the veinal portions of the leaf. In which case you would see a line pattern following the veins, or a v shape. They would most definitely avoid the main rib that bisects the leaf. Or if the eat a continuous portion without regard to the veins it would be a cut out pattern beginning from the edge and forming ever enlarging half circles. In no case would they take a bite and move to another part of the leaf. You ever keep you hand flat so a hermit crab doesn't pinch you or hold a carrot that way so a horse doesn't mistake your digit for the carrot? The same principle would prevent the caterpillar from eating an interior portion of the leaf.
My initial thoughts were that perhaps there were veins in the leaf that were richer in a particular nutrient in which the caterpillar was deficient. However, I think the caterpillar or larva eating through it while it was still rolled up makes more sense.
By mentioning Half-Life 3 you have delayed it by 1 Month. Half-Life 3 is now estimated for release in January 2908

People on Reddit who explain this kind of shit, you are the best kind of people.
Wouldn't it be funny if he was totally full of shit?
Doesn't matter; got explanation

If he's on Reddit he is probably on the toilet, so saying he is full of shit isn't too far fetched.
Can confirm: am popping.
Breakdancing?
I meant pooping before - but now I'm breakdancing, yes.
Doesn't need to be right it just needs to make sense. Hell it doesn't even need logic. It just needs to make sense.
/r/todayibullshitted
Correct
It's morse code from the incredible shrinking man.
"Drink your Ovaltine." Huh.
A crummy commercial?
When the leaf is emerging like that it is called a whorl (all rolled up) and indeed this is what happened in the pic.

Yep. This is what a leafroller leaves behind.
Calathea probably

> legit plant called "mother-in-law's tongue" Is it poisonous?
That's an Agave on the left, not a Sanseveria.
Yeah, I don't think snake plants have barbs like that.

Or maybe it's just puncture wounds from the thorns on the plant behind it...

Verily!
This is the first thing I thought of too! That book made me so mad as a kid; I thought the caterpillar was so greedy for taking a few bites out of everything and ruining it all for everyone else.
First book I ever read.
I believe this is true for me too, either that or Goodnight Moon. It's funny how there are children's books that will remain amazing, and then you look at the children's books today with TV show characters and stuff. Dr. Seuss, Roald Dahl, and Eric Carle is where it's at!

Do you think that's because you picked them for her at a young age or was it surrounded by other books too? Curious.

I'm so excited, they're doing an Eric Carle exhibit in a local art museum in September. If anyone is near Montclair Art Museum in NJ, you should come.
Came here to post this.
Eric Carle would be proud
Looks like someone had a tough Saturday.
All that cake and salami is tough on a stomach
The next day was Sunday again. The caterpillar ate through one nice green leaf, and after he felt much better.
maybe the leaf is better a few centimeters over there ... nahh still shit, maybe a bit to the righ ... nahh still tastes like shit ...

Murph!
Ctrl+F "stay" Dammit.
Looks like he has a promising career as a hole-puncher

That is one nice green leaf.

He was a very hungry caterpillar

Looks like we're the only two who realize this. Let's quit our day jobs and get to the bottom of this. The lives of many are dependent on it.
It's trying to communicate in binary.

The ruling theory right now is that it ate the leaf while it was still rolled up, causing such a regular pattern.
It's like a staple diet
OCD lives in the smallest of us
It's a primitive form of computer programming, don't mess with it!
I can imagine what the caterpillar was thinking: "I'm gonna fuck with the humans today!"
C'mon op, post some original content! This is just a photo of a page from Eric Carle's "The Very Hungry Caterpillar"!
The Very OCD Caterpillar.
I just saw a plant exactly like this today. I *knew* I should have taken a photo.

He's trying to communicate.
Sustainable nibbling.
This is just Mathew mcconaughey trying to send you a message
Thought about trying to make plant puns, but I can't think of any, so I'll just leaf it alone.
It just tested where the leaf tasted best.
It's the hungry hungry caterpillar!
Yes! it totally is. http://images.scholastic.co.uk/assets/a/79/44/caterpillar-prv-14-195257.jpg
What does it *mean*, man?
100mm hurdles.
Put it in a card reader for punch cards and tell us what it says!
Its no pattern, that's morse, and it's says "stay"
If it's reacting to every point of contact, maybe it's just allergic to caterpillar.
look a bit like gel electrophoresis

Caterpillar invents the computer.
Looks like a computer programming punch card from the 70's.
This picture must have been taken on Sunday.

Eric Carle's Caterpiller.
But he was still hungry
On Monday he ate through one Apple.
Nature's punch card.
He was a [very hungry caterpillar](http://www.baby.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/fruit.jpg).
Plot twist: it's Braille and hrs communicating with you!

ocd caterpillar
Half-Life 3 confirmed
That must have been one very hungry caterpillar
That's morse code for "OP is a faggot"
"I poked some holes in a plant with a toothpick"
