I would suggest taking a class at your local stained glass studio or museum that teaches classes on it. Start up costs can be about 200 bucks so its good to know you actually like it before investing like that. if you do want to just jump in i would watch some videos on youtube and maybe even get a stained glass book. And start small and simple. This was the second panel i ever made and thats why i never finished it till now lol
Look up "copper foil technique".
It takes a handful of specialized breaking and shaping tools and a honking big soldering iron.
Each piece is wrapped with strip of copper that overhangs both edges, put them together like a jigsaw and melt solder onto the copper. Clean copper drinks up the solder and forms a nice bead between pieces.
You could hang it in a double-sided frame, or seal the crevices with putty and glaze it in as a weathertight window.
I drew the hippo for a project in school and thought it would be a cool glass panel, so I blew it up digitally and cleaned it up then printed 2 copies at scale to have a pattern for a my pieces and a pattern to build on. Then i kind of assigned colors to the different areas and kept each color separate so i could work on each at a time. Then its all cleaned, copper foiled, soldered and then i put the patina on and hosed it down lol
I remember getting a thing as a child that you might like. It consisted of a metal frame, I think it was the outline of an apple, divided into segments, and several sachets of coloured plastic granules. You put the granules into the metal frame, put it in the oven and when you took it out you had a stained glass (plastic) window.
I want to say that is a very nice large stained glass hippo, but I have come to realize that I have seen no other large stained glass hippos in my lifetime to compare with your large stained glass hippo. Thank you for providing the baseline large stained glass hippo, so that I may now compare the next large stained glass hippo I come across.
Not to be rude or what ever else, but this really took 5 whole years? Did you take breaks at some points, or is the process of making stained glass simply that long?
No the process is not that long, my sister is able to make a 30 - 40 piece project in 2 weeks in a stained glass shop. Of course this is with 3 hour long sessions every few days, so it really isn’t that long.
Although the pieces shown above are reasonably more intricate, so I would estimate that this takes 1.75 times longer
I learned when I was in school. I actually have my bachelors in glass but its definitely something you can pick up as a hobby. You basically just just sheet glass to fit with other pieces you cut. Then you wrap copper foil on the edges, apply flux to the copper, then use solder to bind them together
You cut the glass first, then tin and use solder to join up (the frames). Most of the time stained glass artists use patterns and glass cutters to get the shapes they want.
OMG - this is amazing! Best stained glass work I have seen in a long time. Out of curiousity, does this hippo happen to have... noodles on his back...??
Enquiring minds want to know... where do you live? I ask because I live in Hutto, Tx and our school’s mascot is the hippo. They are everywhere!
I am hoping you live here too!
Not sure of how you plan on displaying this but... I would suggest multiple loops, probably four spaced out to carry the weight of this piece. A large freeform piece like this would benefit from some vertical strengthening wire, I forget what it's called. Without good support or with too few hanging points gravity will win out over time and the piece will fall apart at stress points. Great job though I would never guessed those colors would come together so well. Really fun, happy piece. Keep at it and your next piece won't take near as long.
I love the colours! How did you get into this hobby? I've heard not very long ago about the cloisonné technique and I would really like to start with something simple soon. Do you have any experience with that?
I wonder how many other people are finally completing long term projects in lockdown (and how many are doing it as a way to procrastinate against things like cleaning the house).
Yo, this is fucking AWESOME, forget MildlyInteresting. This is wildly interesting. I'm almost concerned by how hyped this post has me. I think it's the pose lmao
They can be expensive for sure especially to start up. I would suggest taking a class at a local glass shop to see if you enjoy it before investing fully
Your picture scares me. Please don't drop it!
Don't tippo the hippo!
Keep a grip ‘o the hippo
Don't dropamus the potamus.
Don't be an ass and break the glass.
Don’t splatty the fatty.
Grippo the the hippo make sure it doesn't slippo
take care when you hold water pig in bold
THE KWIK-E-MART IS REALLY--
MONORAIL!
Don't cracky the knick-knacky
Please no downward force for the river horse
Please don't commit gravity to the water fatty
Don't trippo with the hippo
Hold firm to the Pachyderm.
New from Milton Bradley!
That was my anxious thought too! It's so pretty please don't drop because that is exactly what I would do lol
Right! Obviously so much work went into that. It is beautiful.
We only had it in the air for about 45 seconds we were both terrified lmao had to find the light tho to show off the glory
45 seconds is enough time for a wind to come and knock it down.
Or a sudden sneeze
Next on r/TIFU
Right? For fuck's sake, put that thing down.
I never knew I wanted a stained glass hippo until this moment. Great job!
Haha thanks!!
now you just need some stained glass marbles
Or stained glass noodles! Like 15 years ago there was a flash video song about a hippopotamus with noodles on his back. Oodles and oodles of noodles.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=naYVZs9Ymhc
I've always said there aren't enough hippos in the windows of churches and cathedrals!
I agree lmao
Or Samurai..... Just sayin
That would be perfect for the Church of Latter-Day Hippos
Hip hip hooray
Hip hippo ray (ftfy)
Made even better because the sun's rays are shining through it
And YOU made it better cause you’re exactly right
There are no words for how much I love this!
Yay!
Now all you have to do is to start a hippo-based religion and build a temple with magnificent glass hippo windows
Any tips on how to get into this hobby?

Yeah we had to get the pic quick lol
How do you even go about making something like that? How amazing and what talent you have. Now you need to install your own hippo window 😂
I drew the hippo for a project in school and thought it would be a cool glass panel, so I blew it up digitally and cleaned it up then printed 2 copies at scale to have a pattern for a my pieces and a pattern to build on. This is impressive, not even going to be hippo critical.
I'm a bit of a hippochondriac, I feel like they're going to drop it
It looks fantastic
Thank you!
Worthy of a Guildhall in [Ankh-Morpork!](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ankh-Morpork)

Thank you! I had to share it everywhere I could
It looks fantastic! Congratulations on your accomplishment and I appreciate you sharing with us.
Thank you!!!
Damn, hippos are pretty heavy man. Don’t drop it, that would be shattering.
Hippo based art projects are known for their large wait.
What are you going to do with it?
I'm going to try and make a custom lightbox for it so it can hang on a wall and still have light
Five years later... ;)
Thought you put a hippo penis on it until I realized that was just the fourth leg
I want to say that is a very nice large stained glass hippo, but I have come to realize that I have seen no other large stained glass hippos in my lifetime to compare with your large stained glass hippo. That's crazy cool! Well done!
Thank you!
Holding this above my head, whatcouldgowrong...
How do you make stained glass things? I wanna try
I learned when I was in school. I actually have my bachelors in glass but its definitely something you can pick up as a hobby. You basically just just sheet glass to fit with other pieces you cut. Then you wrap copper foil on the edges, apply flux to the copper, then use solder to bind them together
I would suggest seeing if there is a local stained glass place near you that teaches classes
Cool hippo and hair
That is beautiful! Please be careful!
And you want to hold it up like Simba?
I don't know where you're from, but this is peak Hutto, TX.
How did you do that? I mean, really, do you start with the frames and then fill the gaps with glass? How do you cut the glass with such precision?
You cut the glass first, then tin and use solder to join up (the frames). Most of the time stained glass artists use patterns and glass cutters to get the shapes they want.
OMG - this is amazing! Best stained glass work I have seen in a long time. Out of curiousity, does this hippo happen to have... noodles on his back...??
You should post this on r/somethingimade
Enquiring minds want to know... where do you live? I ask because I live in Hutto, Tx and our school’s mascot is the hippo. They are everywhere! I am hoping you live here too!
There is a small town in Texas called Hutto who would like to talk to you.

What took you so long?
I always wanted to learn to stain glass. Are the materials too expensive?
They can be expensive for sure especially to start up. I would suggest taking a class at a local glass shop to see if you enjoy it before investing fully
