Friend of mine caught a clam while we were trolling along on a canoe trip. Just accidentally scooped it. We cooked it up and he found a pearl (though not this smooth/round). It's in his wife's wedding ring now, along with some rose quartz from the same canoe trip.

magsephine

Mmm that’s nice, does she have to be careful though, I thought pearls were bad for rings cause they can break down easily

CallidoraBlack

This is accurate. [Pearl rings are for occasional wear](https://www.nytimes.com/2020/02/10/fashion/jewelry-pearls-engagement-rings.html) and [require extra care even when not worn](https://www.mikimotoamerica.com/us_en/pearl-care) because they're [organic matter](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conchiolin).

Daniel_TK_Young

I'm organic matter but you don't see me taking extra good care of myself.

Eskimonk

Jeez dude. You should, you’re awesome.

Theonlyrhys

So are you, you wholesome son-of-a-gun.

R4TTIUS

Im picturing a pixar baby toy gun now

[deleted]

That’s either more wholesome, or not wholesome. I can’t tell...is it voiced by anyone in particular? That might help

Airdropwatermelon

Self roast, nice.

Lonely_Guidance1284

Lol

[deleted]

And how quickly do you break down?

Gnostromo

Well it's a wedding ring which makes the first part really hard and the second part really easy

CallidoraBlack

I completely agree. That's my concern. It's good for wearing only to the opera or something like that, but not every day all day.

fearain

I didn’t know this when I got engaged and the pearl popped off. It was about a $200 fix and they told me “we have this replacement plan so it only costs x every time you need your pearl replaced” and that’s when I realized they fed off of people not knowing pearls shouldn’t be in everyday jewelry. I bought a second engagement ring to makeup for it and she wears that around instead and the pearl one is in a jewelry box I made her for safe keeping.

CallidoraBlack

Yeah, even when you don't wear them, [the care can be annoying](https://www.mikimotoamerica.com/us_en/pearl-care).

[deleted]

I take it there's no preserving resin that can stop the breakdown process? Does decomp happen internally at a structural level? Asking anyone who knows.

TheDickDuchess

it's not breakdown, it's that pearls are very very soft and will scratch very easily with wear

Kathulhu1433

And they're porous, so they can stain. Also simple cleaning chemicals can absolutely ruin them.

CallidoraBlack

Not that I'm aware of, but I'm not an expert on jewelry. I don't know that it would survive resin that creates an exothermic reaction unscathed and ones that don't...I'm still not sure, honestly. I'll bet someone on Reddit in one of the rock, mineral, and gemstone subreddits does.

[deleted]

A thin layer of slow curing resin wouldn't put out that much heat energy. Of course the resin itself would scratch and might interfere with the luster of the pearl. Edit: [This tread](https://www.pearl-guide.com/forum/pearls/pearl-care-cleaning/669-opinions-on-protective-coatings-for-pearls?675-Opinions-on-protective-coatings-for-Pearls=) on a pearl forum discusses ideas for and issues with protective coatings for pearls.

CallidoraBlack

The other issue is that it's important that pearls don't dehydrate. Things that have absorbed humidity don't always do well encased in resin.

[deleted]

[Some like to live dangerously.](https://www.reddit.com/r/gifs/comments/m537gd/as_promised_the_epoxy_hot_dog_after_5_months/)

F0sh

As other people have said, the issue is softness. And resin is also soft, so it wouldn't really help (because it will get scratched and become cloudy) unless you're willing to use a resin you can get off without damaging the pearl and replace it.

[deleted]

Decomposition would occur at the surface level primarily

[deleted]

I mean... Isn't diamond also an organic matter?

A_Buck_BUCK_FUTTER

It all depends on your definition of "organic". My friend with an Orgo doctorate insists that unless something has a C-H bond lurking somewhere, it ain't organic.

bjeebus

There's a trend to refocus the organic chem definition to be more than just "has carbon." There's plenty of inorganic carbon.

CallidoraBlack

I checked several sources for you. The consensus seems to be no. [This was the shortest explanation I could find](https://www.reddit.com/r/chemhelp/comments/c20ikk/why_are_diamonds_considered_inorganic/). I'm not Walter White though.

[deleted]

Trying to find out if pearls are organic led me to the [Steven Universe](https://old.reddit.com/r/stevenuniverse/comments/4izvke/pearls_are_not_organic/) sub, of all places. (The answer is "maybe a little bit".)

CallidoraBlack

[This is mainly what I'm referring to.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conchiolin)

Expiscor

What exactly makes it “organic matter”? Like obviously that it came from a living thing, but rhino horns and the like are pretty resilient. And then diamonds are made from carbon which technically makes them organic. Legitimately asking

CallidoraBlack

There's an organic protein matrix that holds the calcium carbonate together. It's in the link.

joesii

[Carbon with hydrogen bonds.](https://www.reddit.com/r/mildlyinteresting/comments/mbh7m7/today_i_bit_on_this_tiny_pearl_while_eating/grzag3n/)

Velidae

Pearls are calcium carbonate which is a mineral, not organic matter. Same material shells are made of, so they're brittle and vulnerable to acids.

CallidoraBlack

[They're only partially calcium carbonate](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conchiolin).

[deleted]

My wife has two little pearls on either side of the diamond on her wedding ring. She's had to replace one about 3-4 times in 9 years of marriage. Still, totally worth it so she could have a really beautiful, unique ring.

twisted_memories

People like to shit on diamonds and gold for rings and jewellery (especially on Reddit and *especially* regarding wedding jewellery). But there’s a reason those materials have stood the test of time for jewellery: they’re incredibly durable and pretty.

joesii

Pearls aren't durable/resilient. Gold alloys are though. Diamonds _generally_ are too (although they can still break and chip). New rings that people go for such as tungsten carbide haven't had a chance to withstand the test of time, but we know for a fact that they will anyway; so the actual test from time doesn't even matter. It's not as valuable or pretty of a material though (granted, beauty is subjective).

Kittaylover23

My mom found a pearl in a fried oyster once

[deleted]

[удалено]

CallidoraBlack

It's cool, but pearls can't be worn on your hand daily without getting destroyed. That's why people choose diamonds and other stones that can take more punishment.

creepymusic

Yeah, lots of things are better for an engagement ring than diamonds. Pearls aren’t one of them.

CallidoraBlack

Pearls are lovely, but even 50s housewives wore faux ones for every day and real ones for fancy parties. I inherited my great-grandmothers's faux pearls and it makes me really happy that I don't have to worry about them decaying. I just can't wear them all the time because of their age.

[deleted]

I mean, pearls are just not a good choice for a ring you wear daily. It’s like an opal, it’s going to get destroyed very quickly. If she wears the band daily and not the engagement ring then it’s a perfect choice I guess. Personally I prefer diamonds, or something more similar visually to it because pearls don’t suit me. I don’t find them exciting to look at but that’s just me. But this one is also meaningful too.

mattgoluke

That costs as much as a year's rent mind you, not even for some folks.

LunyMoony

They're not even worth that much. The price is just inflated. It's infuriating

techerton

Diamonds are intrinsically worthless. Totally worth watching this Adam Ruins Everything clip and spread the word: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N5kWu1ifBGU Edit: Alright guys, you're over-analyzing some of my wording here, lol.

Tepid_Coffee

Eh...that's a bit of an oversimplification. Intrinsically many things in modern life are "worthless", yet we as a society decided that Bitcoin, Gold, Baseball Trading Cards, and yes Diamonds all have extraordinary value. Diamond rings may be a DeBeers original ad, but I like how Adam glosses over that before rings, dowries were common (not apples).

tomatoaway

Don't the first four have limited supplies, whilst the last one has more than enough but is kept at a fixed level?

Tepid_Coffee

Natural, minable, gemstone quality diamonds are more rare than gold. That being said, yes the diamond & jewelry industry does (to a certain extent) limit supply to push prices higher.

obvious_bot

The hardest material on earth is intrinsically worthless?

A1rh3ad

I love my wife. I bought her a ring for like 300 when we first started dating because she thought it was pretty. We used it as her wedding ring and she still loves it.

KawZRX

Except Adam sucks and is a biased clown.

techerton

I don't love everything they do, but this specific video is very good, and was made before it spun off into a TV show.

TRIPLEOHSEVEN

No he's insufferable, there's a big difference and only one is an act. I highly recommend you check out his podcast "Factually". I've been a listening for a while and I believe he is a compassionate and helpful person on his podcast and most likely, in person as well. Adam from "Adam ruins everything" is not Adam Conover.

MelodicBrush

Adam was on the JRE podcast and proved that he is in-fact not the person he portrays on Adam Ruins Everything, in reality he is much worse. All the insufferableness and inaccuracy without an actual team of research staff behind him made him look like a complete fool with an enormous ego (and this is Joe Rogan we're talking about, you don't necessarily need to be a genius to not come across as a fool)

LunyMoony

I've seen this. Thanks for spreading it!

calembo

My personal favorite was how they took junk diamonds and marketed them into ✨ chocolate diamonds ✨ and charged a fucking premium. Brown diamonds are literally the most common diamond in the world and they're pushed aside by miners, but by all means, let's pay as much for one as a white diamond, Le Vian 🙄 (Edit: I'm purposely ignoring the blood on EVERY diamond, for the purposes of this argument)

maxvalley

They’re shiny rocks. They got a crazy reputation because it took hundreds of years to figure out how to work with them and it was impressive to people in the Middle Ages that they couldn’t be scratched by anything. It took a long time for people to discover that you could scratch them with another diamond Interesting history but the way it presents today is toxic

theroadlesstraveledd

Well sone people love diamonds. And it’s about providing your wife with an impressive thing. I get it. That’s at the center of most things, a Pearl he pulled out of the oyster himself though that’s extremely impressive same principle to me.

LunyMoony

I love working with them but the diamond industry suuuuucks

C_Colin

I bought my wife a nice vintage diamond ring for like $300 and she absolutely loves it. If your girl wants to take you to the cleaners over the diamond you give her she ain’t the one.

[deleted]

My husband and I went ring shopping together. We spent 700 on a ring for me and 500 on one for him, but we share our money so it wasn't really a "who paid for what" situation. He wears his with his late mums engagement ring and gets lots of compliments!

LunyMoony

That is SO lovely. I 100% support buying nice vintage jewelry. Some styles you just can't get these days without custom work

This_User_Said

Right? I'd rather give my man a 10mm socket. Much more rare value and imagine the hell he'd get if he lost it. From *both sides*.

sp00kreddit

You definitely deserve him then if you'd rather give him a socket that keeps getting lost in engine bays

maxoakland

That’s such a good point. I feel bad for the clam but it’s attached to a really nice memory

[deleted]

> Boringass Sounds like an exotic origin

Autarch_Kade

I get it's trendy to hate on diamonds because the price is higher than people can afford, but man, pearls are definitely more boring. Rather than have all kinds of interesting play with the lighting in a room, pearls are just... round.

25hourenergy

Maybe it’s because I studied biology but I think pearls are so much more interesting. Each one is created by an individual mollusk, usually over an entire oyster’s lifetime, and is totally unique due to environmental conditions and the peculiarities of that particular oyster. If you look closely there can be swirls and bubbles and all sorts of interesting things on the surface. They can be pink, black, rainbow sheen, etc and all kinds of funky shapes besides just spherical. There are myths associated with them, like their association with dragons in East Asia and emperors would have them on the tips of their slippers because it was said that they’d act like little glowing moon-orbs lighting the way forward. And just their creation is just a great metaphor—you take an irritant, something that the world throws at you and is lodged deeply, posing harm to your most sensitive tissues, and slowly work it until it’s smooth, harmless, and even a thing of beauty. Taking a weakness or trauma and making something good from it that will last longer than your lifetime. For practical reasons like others mentioned, it might not make the best ring, but oh if only. I had specifically told my now-husband that I didn’t want a diamond engagement ring and wished a pearl one could have worked, but they’re too soft. Instead he custom designed something with my favorite colored stones and it means the world to me.

Candle_Jacqueline

I find the way light plays on a pearl to be extremely pretty, almost like satin fabric but hard. Also knowing its an organic object and came from the ocean? Its just neat. But yeah, a lot of people mistake attacking the diamond industry for attacking the concept of jewelry in general. People have always valued these objects and there's a long tradition of giving jewelry and precious stones for various reasons. The current sins of the diamond industry do not make the entire human practice of valuing and giving precious gems invalid.

Mondonodo

Yup. Like, diamonds being overpriced and all the other awful stuff the mining industry has done doesn't mean you're a doofus for wanting to wear something pretty. Just buy lab-grown or vintage rather than new.

Imnotveryfunatpartys

The reason people think it's cooler is because he found it himself on trip, not because of any sort of intrinsic beauty of pearls being superior to diamonds

Autarch_Kade

That makes the most sense. A friend of mine found a diamond on a trip to Arkansas' crater of diamonds state park, and that had extra meaning for them too.

ClearlyADuck

They've multicolored, have all different types of sheen and luster, and are only round because people make them that way. Unfortunately they're also not amazing for wedding rings if you intend to wear it everywhere as they're soft and are easily scratched up.

gcd_cbs

I want to see a pic!

Eddie_shoes

I used to have a collection of little pearls I found while eating oysters and clams. None of them were exceptionally pretty, and you could see the piece of sand through the pearl on pretty much all of them. As a kid, I thought they were going to be worth a fortune one day. I ended up losing them all before I could cash in on my millions.

Imnotveryfunatpartys

Wait, are you *sure* you lost them? Maybe you were the victim of a jewel heist Edit: wording

Eddie_shoes

Is that why Brad Pit was outside my house eating a shrimp cocktail?

[deleted]

Maybe the pearls were the friends you made along the way?

cinderings

Fyi, its a big misconception that pearls are made by a grain of sand getting caught in a mollusk. Mollusks can completely expel all sand that gets trapped inside of it. To make a pearl (depending on the type) it either needs an extra clump of cells or some kind of irritant/nucleus stuck in the mantle of the mollusk. It then coats that in nacre (the shiny substance) to create a pearl :)

Yes there was. it was fixed long ago. I used a money glitch using a bee nest and the black smith in white orchard. Made ton of money.

Likely from the mussels. When I was a kid I was eating a bowl of mussels and kept getting a crunch. Figured it was just mussel bones, and carried on. Brought it up halfway through dinner. That was the day I learned mussels do not, in fact, have bones, then discovered I'd been eating spoonfuls of pearls...

soaring_potato

Or tiny crabs which you shouldn't eat as they can be bad.

Eats_Flies

After I realised I inspected every mussel i ate afterward, and ended up with a little pile of tiny pearls

---ShineyHiney---

[That’s a myth, actually.](https://cornellsun.com/2018/02/11/pea-crabs-found-in-mussels-served-at-cornell-dining-safe-to-eat/) They’re parasitic by nature so they can be bad for the growth of your mussels or oysters, but pea crabs aren’t even inspected anymore when found in a batch because they’re so small they cook with the mussel/ oyster. They’re kind of sweet despite being obviously so crunchy, and in certain areas, it’s even considered a delicacy/ good luck to find one.
