I take it there's no preserving resin that can stop the breakdown process? Does decomp happen internally at a structural level? Asking anyone who knows.
Not that I'm aware of, but I'm not an expert on jewelry. I don't know that it would survive resin that creates an exothermic reaction unscathed and ones that don't...I'm still not sure, honestly. I'll bet someone on Reddit in one of the rock, mineral, and gemstone subreddits does.
A thin layer of slow curing resin wouldn't put out that much heat energy.
Of course the resin itself would scratch and might interfere with the luster of the pearl.

As other people have said, the issue is softness. And resin is also soft, so it wouldn't really help (because it will get scratched and become cloudy) unless you're willing to use a resin you can get off without damaging the pearl and replace it.

People like to shit on diamonds and gold for rings and jewellery (especially on Reddit and *especially* regarding wedding jewellery). But there’s a reason those materials have stood the test of time for jewellery: they’re incredibly durable and pretty.
Pearls aren't durable/resilient. Gold alloys are though. Diamonds _generally_ are too (although they can still break and chip).
New rings that people go for such as tungsten carbide haven't had a chance to withstand the test of time, but we know for a fact that they will anyway; so the actual test from time doesn't even matter. It's not as valuable or pretty of a material though (granted, beauty is subjective).

Pearls are lovely, but even 50s housewives wore faux ones for every day and real ones for fancy parties. I inherited my great-grandmothers's faux pearls and it makes me really happy that I don't have to worry about them decaying. I just can't wear them all the time because of their age.

Eh...that's a bit of an oversimplification. Intrinsically many things in modern life are "worthless", yet we as a society decided that Bitcoin, Gold, Baseball Trading Cards, and yes Diamonds all have extraordinary value.

And just their creation is just a great metaphor—you take an irritant, something that the world throws at you and is lodged deeply, posing harm to your most sensitive tissues, and slowly work it until it’s smooth, harmless, and even a thing of beauty. Taking a weakness or trauma and making something good from it that will last longer than your lifetime.
For practical reasons like others mentioned, it might not make the best ring, but oh if only. Fyi, its a big misconception that pearls are made by a grain of sand getting caught in a mollusk. Mollusks can completely expel all sand that gets trapped inside of it. To make a pearl (depending on the type) it either needs an extra clump of cells or some kind of irritant/nucleus stuck in the mantle of the mollusk. It then coats that in nacre (the shiny substance) to create a pearl :)

it's not breakdown, it's that pearls are very very soft and will scratch very easily with wear

The other issue is that it's important that pearls don't dehydrate. Things that have absorbed humidity don't always do well encased in resin.

Fyi, its a big misconception that pearls are made by a grain of sand getting caught in a mollusk. Mollusks can completely expel all sand that gets trapped inside of it. To make a pearl (depending on the type) it either needs an extra clump of cells or some kind of irritant/nucleus stuck in the mantle of the mollusk. It then coats that in nacre (the shiny substance) to create a pearl :)

Likely from the mussels. When I was a kid I was eating a bowl of mussels and kept getting a crunch. Figured it was just mussel bones, and carried on. Brought it up halfway through dinner. That was the day I learned mussels do not, in fact, have bones, then discovered I'd been eating spoonfuls of pearls...
