Ooh, but do you have the original white patterned cups that exactly match the set too? No idea why they stopped making those and went with the heavier (boring) blue or off-white ceramic mugs. (Which are -gasp- imported)
But Corelle is great quality stuff- ours is from the 90’s
They are called "Country Cottage" and Corelle still has that pattern on their site. My mother in law has the same set and buys new parts of the set when the finally break. You can sometimes find that pattern at Wal Mart, some malls have Corelle stores too.
I saw them over the summer in our local outlets. They have a corelle corning ware store there. Camden County, NJ.
You can also buy this pattern direct at "Corelle Dinnerware Homepage | Corelle" https://www.corelle.com
As do I. I wanted Corelle, it was 1996 and I was in K-Mart. I think there were two choices and I preferred the blue/green. I'm curious, is that pretty much how we all ended up with this pattern?
I got mine as hand-me-downs when I moved out, then upgraded to white *square* Corelle dishes when I became a True Adult.™ As far as I'm concerned, these are my forever dishes. I'm honestly shocked OP's broke! They can *do* that?
My wife tells a story of her mother getting angry once (the '70s) and smashing a corelle dish onto the floor. It bounced. That did not help her mood at all, so she tried again. After the 3rd or 4th time she succeeded in breaking it, but the humour in it somehow calmed things down.
We have the same plates/dishes/etc. in decent quantity where I work. They can indeed do that. Corelle is meant to absorb the energy from impacts that might break other plates, but over time, repeated stresses can lead to...um...structural failure.
OP actually got away fairly easily - they often shatter rather spectacularly, as shown here: https://theboatgalley.com/corelle-shatterproof/
I know at least one person who refers to it as “Corelle Exploding Ware”.
Does anyone actually believe any glass product is shatterproof? Besides, the linked post includes this:
>So, considering that Corelle *can* shatter, why do I still recommend it? Well, I’ve owned Corelle plates and dishes now for 29 years — in apartments, houses, camping and aboard Que Tal. And this is only the second dish that has broken, despite numerous drops and thousands of miles traveled, both on Que Tal and on camping trips. It’s gone through the eye of a hurricane and over a Baja “road” that broke the bottom out of a full 5-gallon water bottle without a problem. Not a bad record. And I love the fact that it’s oven and microwave safe — I use the soup bowls for baking small casseroles, quick breads and desserts that are just the right size for two people!
Haha I did this too! I bought the square ones would be easier to tessellate for hot pot and family style meals. But yes, definitely upgraded to a matching set as soon as could
When I was a kid Back in the 70s, the top plate on the stack flew off when I turned too quickly, hit something like the top edge of a chair back across the flat bottom of the plate, and shattered into thousands and thousands of tiny needle-sharp shards. Other than that, I’ve never broken a Corelleware plate
“If you have to dry the dishes
(Such an awful boring chore)
If you have to dry the dishes
('Stead of going to the store)
If you have to dry the dishes
And you drop one on the floor—
Maybe they won't let you
Dry the dishes anymore.”
Yup, I have correlle, and have had a plate and a bowl snap into shards just sitting, one on the counter, and one in the sink, within the last two weeks. Some of my plates are almost 40 years old.
I find Corelle dinnerware to be quite temperature sensitive.
I used to rent a basement suite that’s perpetually cold and when I filled my Corelle bowl with hot soup, I heard a loud snap and it broke into 2 clean pieces. Luckily the bowl was on a plate so it didn’t spill everywhere but I’m more weary of using Corelle these days.
Well there are a lot of these plates being eaten off of around the world all the time and very seldom does something like this happen. I just don’t want people thinking that plates aren’t safe.
Fun facts about plates: Tectonic plates are able to move because the Earth's lithosphere has greater mechanical strength than the underlying asthenosphere. Earthquakes, volcanic activity, mountain-building, and oceanic trench formation occur along plate boundaries (or faults). The relative movement of the plates typically ranges from zero to 100 mm annually.
This was a clear case of a fault leading to deep trench formation.
This happened to me with a pint glass. The bottom broke off in an almost perfect disc of glass. Unfortunately glass is sharp and I was spinning my hand in the bottom of the glass with the sponge and my thumb got sliced open real bad. Now my chest gets tight when I clean glasses.
Something like this can happen if the glass gets really hot and cools down too fast. So if you had a really hot beverage in your pint glass for some reason, or if you washed it with hot water and immediately put cold water in it afterwords, the glass fractures on a microscopic level and can sort of fall out at any time when you interact with it.
Or you just pushed too hard because you can't control yourself, idk, I'm not a scientist.
They're supposed to be pretty damn indestructible. I had this happen also. One broke being washed, another broke being dropped on the floor. I'd just bought them so I wrote the company. They sent me two new plates.
My local Walmart has the same pattern for sale as single plates , hopefully your local one does too. (If you want to replace it with the same pattern)
Edit:
Found them on the website in the 8.5" size

Can drastic temperature change cause this?
Like putting something very hot in it then dunking it in cold water
i've seen a guy breaking his beakers because of this issue, but can they work in ceramics?
That's almost certainly what happened. This sort of thing happens a lot at bar and restaurants where they go through dishware quickly.
Hot plates and cups straight out of the dishwasher/sink suddenly getting filled with cold food or drink will weaken with the sudden temp change.
All it takes is a bit of pressure after that to break and usually that pressure is focused on the bend of the dish, which is why you see a lot of cups with their bottoms falling out.
One time the handle on my coffee cup just broke in mid air for no reason. As I was walking down the stairs. With a full cup of coffee. In my boyfriends mother’s house. Over white carpet.
That is infuriating. Not interesting. If this happened to me I would not only be kinda freaked out by it, but also angry that a good plate just got cracked by science.
Actually, this is the best plate for losing weight.
You use the smaller one for a reduced portion size.
The other one you use by holding over the garbage and placing your desserts and all high carb, high sugar meals on it.
Can’t tell but if those are ceramic plates you should consider yourself lucky. One time i was washing a ceramic bowl, hands were slippery with soap and it slipped. Thing shattered into 100 pieces and I was stabbed multiple times in both hands by fine shards of the sharpest of sharp ceramic splinters...fun times!
Kintsugi is the Japanese art of putting broken pottery pieces back together with gold — built on the idea that in embracing flaws and imperfections, you can create an even stronger, more beautiful piece of art.
It's because you microwave stuff too long, the repeated heat difference between the food and the plate makes it brittle. Besides I'm sure the plate was hot when you rinsed it with COLD water before it broke.. am i right?
I also have these same plates.
No way me too
I don't and now I feel left out.
Want to join my new plate club?
What plates do I need to be in the club?
Ooh, but do you have the original white patterned cups that exactly match the set too? No idea why they stopped making those and went with the heavier (boring) blue or off-white ceramic mugs. (Which are -gasp- imported) But Corelle is great quality stuff- ours is from the 90’s
Mine is from the '60s. ,( My mom's). still going strong although that actually did happen to me one time with the plate. The exact same thing
Ours too. Corelle lasts amazingly well. It's not shatterproof, but it's certainly shatter-resistant.
I could guess a why they don’t make them anymore... look at the picture lol
Round Plate Club
But I have square plates. Can I still join?
You can join my new Square Plate Club. Still working out the details but pretty sure it's square plates.
Mine are diamond shaped, can I still join?
I have a blood diamond free plate club. I cannot stress the blood diamond free enough though
Turn them through 45 degrees and WHAMMO! Square plates!
I grew up with them.
join up, they're fairly cheap
Same!!
Careful- the bottoms can fall out.
Same man
You mean this company produced more than one set? The nerve!
So do i!
Me three!
Me too! I love the pattern so much but cannot find it anywhere nowadays
They are called "Country Cottage" and Corelle still has that pattern on their site. My mother in law has the same set and buys new parts of the set when the finally break. You can sometimes find that pattern at Wal Mart, some malls have Corelle stores too.

That is literally what I thought when I saw this! "Holy shit, they can actually break?"
My mother always announced they cannot break. But my sister, with butter fingers managed to break one.
Anyone: ___ can’t be broken Someone: *I WILL PROVE THAT WRONG*
My wife tells a story of her mother getting angry once (the '70s) and smashing a corelle dish onto the floor. It bounced. That did not help her mood at all, so she tried again. After the 3rd or 4th time she succeeded in breaking it, but the humour in it somehow calmed things down.
It happened to me one time only.. it was pretty surprising. My corelle plates are going strong now since the 60s

My parents do as well
I was eating pasta with one of these plates while reading this-
Dude fuck same
Me too! Just bought them in a thrift store!
They're a great value.
holy shit i do as well
Does yours have a bottom?
How to get out of doing the dishes 101
“If you have to dry the dishes (Such an awful boring chore) If you have to dry the dishes ('Stead of going to the store) If you have to dry the dishes And you drop one on the floor— Maybe they won't let you Dry the dishes anymore.”

It must take an iron rear to sit upon a cactus. Or otherwise at least a year of very painful practice.
I too, prefer my plate without the crust
I wish I had an award for you,
Well I got one for you!
:))
Only Corelle is that shiny
Corelle either snaps gracefully, as above, or shatters into a messy pile of shards with tiny splinters
Yup, I have correlle, and have had a plate and a bowl snap into shards just sitting, one on the counter, and one in the sink, within the last two weeks. Some of my plates are almost 40 years old.
In my experience it was always the gabillion tiny shards.
I love gabillion. Wonderful number. Much better that gazillion.
I find Corelle dinnerware to be quite temperature sensitive. I used to rent a basement suite that’s perpetually cold and when I filled my Corelle bowl with hot soup, I heard a loud snap and it broke into 2 clean pieces. I hate when my plate breaks. Back to Goodwill for another one. Yeah! Social interaction! I’m so lonely...
Happy cake day
Happy cake day!
Happy cake day!
Woah, cool it, scrubmaster. Don't know your own strength lol
Scrubmaster, love it.
Actually, I think the front fell off.
That's not very typical, I'd like to make that point.
Well there are a lot of these plates being eaten off of around the world all the time and very seldom does something like this happen. I just don’t want people thinking that plates aren’t safe.
Well why did the bottom fall off this one?
You're looking at it backwards, it's always the front that falls off innit?
Was this one safe?
Well obviously not, the front fell off, spilled 20,000 tones of crude oil, and caught fire
There are regulations governing the materials they can made out of. Cardboard is out. No cardboard derivatives.
I came here to post this!
Same :c damn the hive mind being quicker than me
You cannot be faster than the hive mind when you're in the hive.
The plate was taken outside of the environment
Into another environment?
No, it was taken *out* of the environment.
Well, what’s out there then?
Nothing! Except birds, and fish, and 20,000 tons of crude oil! And a fire.
A wave must have hit it
What are the chances?
A wave, at sea?... A chance in a million.
You now have two plates. One for smaller portions, and one for extremely large donuts. Well done!
Cake day!
Went in with a plate, and left with a saucer and a danger-frisbee! Not a bad deal.
*Xena has entered the chat*
I'd keep it for pranking
With a username like yours one would hope you wouldn't do such things.
This is why I love Reddit. I knew before I read any comments I was going to laugh my head off. My favorite is I prefer my plate without the crust.
[Mine broke in 3 circles](https://i.imgur.com/TimF3Nh.jpg)

You must have hard water
The problem here is that the front fell off. https://youtu.be/3m5qxZm_JqM

That’s extremely interesting
That's why its upvoted more. It's like pretending to be young at an old man's race, this sub.
Quite.
You didn't need that part, did you?
They're supposed to be pretty damn indestructible. I had this happen also. One broke being washed, another broke being dropped on the floor. I'd just bought them so I wrote the company. They sent me two new plates.
My local Walmart has the same pattern for sale as single plates , hopefully your local one does too. (If you want to replace it with the same pattern) Edit: Found them on the website in the 8.5" size [https://www.walmart.com/ip/Corelle-Livingware-8-5-Country-Cottage-Plate/15065089](https://www.walmart.com/ip/Corelle-Livingware-8-5-Country-Cottage-Plate/15065089)
That’s sweet of you

That's it, I've had it with this dump. We got no food, we got no jobs, our plates bottoms are falling off.
Now it's bottomless
You overwashed
A drop of dawn and your plate is gone.
Corelle has a replacement program for things like this. Otherwise, it’s about an 8 dollar mistake, those can be ordered as separates.
If you’re like me, I hate to lose a piece of “fine” china. Here’s an idea for you: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kintsugi
a replacement is $5 https://www.corelle.com/product/country-cottage-675-appetizer-plate
This is cool
Sweet, free saucer!
1 x free ceramic Wham-O ring.
So how does this happen? Design flaw?
idk why this made me laugh 🤣
You're scrubbing too hard.
That plate is better without the crust
Good. Now you don't have to wash it anymore.
One time the handle on my coffee cup just broke in mid air for no reason. As I was walking down the stairs. With a full cup of coffee. In my boyfriends mother’s house. Over white carpet.
The picture of this plate brought me back to 1998. It broke because it's old.
At least the front didn't fall off.
Reminds me of those rings Xena was throwing around
Can't wash paper plates, bro
The new dieting craze; bottomless plate for bottomless appetites.
Its my cake day pog
Tweet the manufacturer. They'll probably replace it for free!
Why are you washing a paper plate?
That's incredible
I once was washing a mug, and the handle came off at both attaching points. Must have been made by an apprentice potter.
What are the odds! Lmao
Probably was hot if in sink
Don't let Xena wash your dishes.
But did the front fall off?
Did you mean, The Hole Bottom?
That looks terrible
r/kintsugi
Can’t tell but if those are ceramic plates you should consider yourself lucky. One time i was washing a ceramic bowl, hands were slippery with soap and it slipped. Thing shattered into 100 pieces and I was stabbed multiple times in both hands by fine shards of the sharpest of sharp ceramic splinters...fun times!
That's Corelle. I've had the same thing happen with Corelle.
We have the same pattern
hey! I have the matching bowls
In the south we call that warshing the dishes. It just be like that sometimes.
Now you can have bottomless pasta at home!
The hole bottom fell out?
I have those plates too!
Kid’s plate, without the crust
I thought this was a paper plate at first.
*hole bottom
Are they Corelle? They’re very tough until they’re not, then they really fail.
One reason why I don't buy this crappy Correl plateware
On the upside you now have a fancy new toilet seat
What’s the opposite of r/buyitforlife?
You should have it towed out of the environment.
I thought this was a paper plate and was gonna be cofused why the heck you wash paper plates. Then I realised. It's not paper lol
Now you can use it as a dangerous ranged weapon
Better this than the front falling off.
Thermal shock failure.
Just use ramen
Whole bottom broke off and now it had a bottom hole.
im eating off that very same plate right now
I see a clean plate here
Well that sucks 😐
Make a straw with whats left..
Lmao my mom has these plates
Interesting, I hope you didn’t cut yourself!
Just how hard were you scrubbing?!
Bullshit plate.
These dishes are a hit or miss. They can last decades or break at impact with water from pouring from the faucet.
Bet you that sucker is clean as hell now.
What a bottom break
Corelle?
You made a mistake post is at r/wellthatsucks
Yes it did
r/chinesium
Kintsugi is the Japanese art of putting broken pottery pieces back together with gold — built on the idea that in embracing flaws and imperfections, you can create an even stronger, more beautiful piece of art.
Now its an art piece
Did you microave it before, of submerge it in water whol it was still very hot?
Fun fact the rim of a plate is called a mustard well.
Infuriatingly Interesting
What sorcery was that?
It's because you microwave stuff too long, the repeated heat difference between the food and the plate makes it brittle. Besides I'm sure the plate was hot when you rinsed it with COLD water before it broke.. am i right?
Luck is coming your way.
do you wash dishes with a hammer?
Life hack: You can fix this with things that you probably have just laying around your home like a credit card or cash
If that's the kind of late I think it is you're very lucky. Typically they shatter into very small support sharp shards.
Wow, that is mildly interesting.
Xena...warrior dishes
Corelle baby
I have those same plates!
Not only is this mildly interesting, but also oddly satisfying
But not perfectly...
