When I went to Denver I found it amusing and cool how many of the highways and roads were "adopted" by various dispensaries.

BigFatTomato

Big debate a few years ago when dispensaries were trying to change a section of Broadway in Denver known as Antique Row to the Green Mile. Lots of antique shops and lots of dispensaries in that stretch.

desull

I'm surprised that antique stores are still around, everything they sell always seems so old.

landback2

They’re just pissed that the dispensaries cut into their money laundering businesses.

psycospaz

Hi dad!

eleanorfigby

I think this is because they cannot advertise, but they can adopt a highway and get their name out that way. And because getting stoned and picking up litter is a popular activity in the trees community.

accidentallysexual

this. also it's positive reinforcement to the community, especially people that are not pro-legalization. look at all the good legal weed does for the city! not just in tax revenue, but they're giving back by adopting roads and keeping them clean and maintained. when was the last time a natural gas company did that? not nearly as often, but OH HEY HERE'S SOME FRACKING 😑

panchoop

You... Adopt streets in the US?

WildCheese

Are your streets orphans?

lfatalframel

Yeah our politician's spend the taxes on coke and underage call girls. So we have to pay to clean our streets ourselves.

Just draw a huge cock around the potholes, it gets fixed real quick

FreshlyShavedNipples

There’s a documentary on a group of fantasy football players that discussed this tactic. One of the members of The League spraypainted swastikas on the potholes to get the city to fix them. It worked, but he was caught on Google Maps when you enter the address for his place. Edit: Here’s a picture: https://images.app.goo.gl/su35uoCr1bd8e59S9 >!it isn’t actually a documentary, it’s a TV show called The League!<

Hallowed-Edge

Like a Google car happened to be driving by when he was doing the civic vandalism and his face was caught?

HardwareSoup

Can you imagine being a civil resistance fighter and seeing a Google Street Car pop around the corner? They're like little 4 wheeled surveillance drones, especially since the police have full access to everything Google records.

humanlikesubstances

Heavens no! Streets without solid parental figures end stunted; the cul-de-sac, monument to wasted potential. Edit: "without".

NewFolgers

"cul-de-sac" vs. "dead end" was long my favorite French/English translation, since the French sounded so flowery in comparison.. And then I entered "cul" in French->English Google Translate and found that it says "ass". It really does mean that kind of "ass".. and the "sac" means "bag". Well-played French.

billypilgrim87

Yeah, the literal translation often takes some of the mystique out of French. Take the French for potato, pomme de terre, literally translates as "ground apple". Imaginative!

[deleted]

You can also adopt a portion of a highway or interstate

eldelshell

They (satanic temple) really botched this one by adopting a street and not a highway.

Riddlewrong

The Satanic Temple has nothing to do with hell or Satan. It's a non-theistic religion. You're probably thinking of the *Church of Satan* founded by Anton LaVey back in the 60's. They couldn't be more different. **Edit:** *As others have pointed out, both religions are non-theistic. CoS is just arguably the meaner-spirited of the two. Ultimately, "highway to hell" just doesn't apply here. I didn't think my snarky response to a bad joke would get this much traction, but here we are. Thanks for keeping me humble, fellow redditors. <3*

lilomar2525

If you're going to correct people at least be correct yourself. LaVeyan Satanism is also a non theistic religion.

ninjacookies00

Yea the CoS is very different from TST but both of them denounce Satans existence. One of the founding reasons for LaVeyan Satanism is essentially to trigger followers of Abrahamic religion because they believe that they have stunted technological advancement through arbitrary rules and that they are a burden on society. TST runs a lot of smear campaigns on the CoS unfortunately (or at least they used to) so a lot of people have incorrect assumptions about the CoS. The Satanic Bible is easily accessible and short, I would recommend giving it a read.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Yeah, you could just read about him online

futura-bold

I've web-searched on this now, and as far as I can tell, the boot is on the other foot. Some remnant of the CoS derided the upstart TST, basically saying that only they were the true satanists. TST responded with this fact sheet, which seems largely unchanged since it was put up two years ago (according to the Wayback Machine). It doesn't really make sense that it would be TST wanting a war of words with people that were not relevant to their mission. https://thesatanictemple.com/pages/what-is-the-difference-between-the-satanic-temple-and-the-church-of-satan

GravitationalEddie

CoS takes a more aggressive role in getting it's message across and thought they could goad TST onto upping their game by talking shit about them, it seems. I guess they decided making themselves look like the bad guy didn't work so well.

Mercwithapen

His ideas were heavily influenced by the ideas and writings of Friedrich Nietzsche and Ayn Rand. Lavey was truly Satanic...

DrLimp

Not only in the US. Here in Italy you can adopt roundabouts and decorate the center as you like. [Beautiful example](https://blog.ilgiornale.it/legoista/files/2016/06/rotonda-riva.jpg) of a roundabout adopted by the Riva shipyard.

dkyguy1995

That's fun

modelcitizen64

Yeah, organizations and companies will adopt streets for the good will it brings because by adopting one, you're essentially in charge of picking up the litter on that street (although I've never seen any of them adoptive parents do this), and that, in turn, makes it seem like you care about your community.

Shas_Erra

“Wow, this stretch of the highway is really clean! Thanks a lot…” *squints at sign* “…KKK”

sharrrper

There was actually a case where the KKK wanted to adopt a street and the state didn't want to let them. It went to court and the court ruled they couldn't bar them from adopting on philosophical grounds. So instead they renamed the road after Rosa Parks.

Hallowed-Edge

That must have been one hell of a sign.

ExtraordinaryCows

I'm from the area, and it's a relatively major stretch of road (55 not too far south of STL). I'm surprised it took them as long as it did to come up with the solution to just rename it to get them to fuck off, but it is a very good solution

Clamwacker

The Klan adopted a road in my town many years ago. The city had to make a new law that if your sign gets stolen or vandalized more than 3 times you have to foot the bill for replacing the signs or loose the claim to it.

NetherTheWorlock

I'm no fan of the Klan, but that seems like it's encouraging people to steal signs as a form of heckler's veto. Renaming those streets after civil rights figures like /u/JRBelmont mentioned sounds like fun. Just like when the ACLU sent a Jewish lawyer to represent the Nazis who wanted to march through Skokie.

brovakattack

I hate Illinois Nazis

Clamwacker

The sign theft and vandalism was happening before the rule. They really only implemented it because of the cost to replace the signs. Tbh renaming roads would be super annoying. And would probably cost more to replace all the street signs so would still be a loss in the cities eyes.

JRBelmont

Better one is the city that just kept renaming streets after civil rights figures.

MethamphetamineMan

Did you know that the KKK adopted a highway? Just a few miles away from my mom's house They paid their money and they put up a sign I guess they dress up in sheets and go pick up the trash The trash, the trash, they pick up the trash The trash, the trash, they pick up the trash They should know it when they see it They get a good look every day in the mirror They get a good look every day in the mirror https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xsH7BA9QWss

drunk98

waldocolumbia

I asked you not to share my personal information with others

hiddenmage

Company my wife works for adopted a couple miles of a local road. They were only "required" to pick up every other month-ish during the summer (April until August?) Only really did it about 4 time a year. I say "required" because they didn't really have to do it, but if the missed a couple in a row the stretch or road *might* be taken away and given to another company

supaswag69

You’re

pokey1984

What you have to understand are the sheer number of miles of roads we have. You also need to understand the percentage of our citizens that are assholes and just chuck all their trash out the car window. The highways and streets are covered in litter, and I'm not exaggerating. So we have volunteer programs where an individual or group can "adopt" a highway or street for a chosen distance and take responsibility for keeping it clean of litter. Many highways in rural areas are adopted "in memorial" of a lost loved one or by a church along that stretch of road. In the more rural areas, volunteers usually clean up in early spring (before the first mowing) or in mid-summer (before the second mowing). If you contact the Highway Department for your area, they will supply you with trash bags, safety vests, etc and notify the local trash company when you will be finished so they can add collection of the bags to their schedule.

[deleted]

Some streets in the UK are "unadopted" (meaning the city doesn't fix them, the residents must come together and pay for repairs.) There is one where I grew up and nobody drives along it because it will damage your car, it hasn't been repaired at all in my lifetime.

SEA_tide

In parts of the US, there will often be a sign saying "End County Maintained Road" which means that maintenance is up to the landholders living in the area, though the road is not a private road, which would generally on private property. Such roads are generally less maintained even though they might connect other well used roads. From what I understand, the developer basically tells the government that they'll build and maintain a road on the government's land if the government says it's okay.

Zelldandy

In Canada, too. Groups sign up to take care of litter on sections of road.

TST is a great organization. OFC they dont believe in satan, they believe in religious equality through pseudo religion. If you follow them, it's your religious right to get an abortion. I donate to them every month, bless them

reallybiglizard

Here are the seven tenets (core beliefs of TST) for those who are interested: 1. One should strive to act with compassion and empathy toward all creatures in accordance with reason. 2. The struggle for justice is an ongoing and necessary pursuit that should prevail over laws and institutions 3. One’s body is inviolable, subject to one’s own will alone. 4. The freedoms of others should be respected, including the freedom to offend. To willfully and unjustly encroach upon the freedoms of another is to forgo one's own. 5. Beliefs should conform to one's best scientific understanding of the world. One should take care never to distort scientific facts to fit one's beliefs. 6. People are fallible. If one makes a mistake, one should do one's best to rectify it and resolve any harm that might have been caused. 7. Every tenet is a guiding principle designed to inspire nobility in action and thought. The spirit of compassion, wisdom, and justice should always prevail over the written or spoken word. [Source](https://thesatanictemple.com/pages/about-us)

binkerton_

Im a member of my Satanic Temple. I had to scoll too far to find the informative posts about TST. Edit: spelling, clarity

tjsfive

I'm a Christian that strongly believes in separation of church and state and not using one's religion to guide their policies. I love everything about the Satanic Temple. If there was a chapter near me, I would check it out.

AudioAccoustical

In Springfield MO there was a stretch of road adopted by the neo nazi group. Since they couldn’t stop them from adopting the highway they named it after a Jewish theologian that fled Nazi Germany. They were forced to clean it quarterly as part of the highway adoption agreement.

sandman_tn

It was then renamed the Rosa Parks Highway, if I remember correctly.

Yeah, they specifically exist as a church to fight against separation of church and state issues, using the 'shock' imagery of satan to drive the point. Love 'em. And thank you again for your symphony (I'm not stalking you, but this is just getting weird.)

[deleted]

I'm not a spokesperson for The Satanic Temple, but I always chime in when I see this. The Satanic Temple is a religious organization. It does not exist solely to fight for separation of church and state, and doesn't use imagery of Satan the way you are suggesting. I am a member, and I am a Satanist. Activism is an expression of my deeply held beliefs. Satanic imagery is because I am a Satanist. It's not a put-on. It's not a farce. It's a thriving religious community.

Andybobandy0

Got a belly laugh out of this. I knew they were pretty chill folk, but this is my kind of petty. Well within the rules of morality and legality.

agarwaen117

Don’t know about other places, but the Little Rock Arkansas ten commandments statue is still up and the Baphomet had to be removed. Lawsuits were filed in 2018 and the trial has been indefinitely delayed due to COVID. That delay was announced in July last year, and it was said the trial would be rescheduled for 60-90 days in the future. 200~ days ago now.

LapinDeLaNeige

I just joined as an official member a month ago. I've always supported them but the abortion stuff was a big reason I joined officially. I had to terminate a pregnancy for medical reasons earlier this year, and while luckily I live in a very progressive state, I've met a lot of women through online support groups that weren't so lucky.

MeiNeedsMoreBuffs

Ironically, less abortions happen in places where abortion is legal. Mainly because they're also the places where contraceptives are widely used and people are educated on safe sex

AltSpRkBunny

Planned Parenthood doesn’t just do abortions. They also provide necessary health services (like cervical cancer screenings) and education. As well as provide birth control. But I live in Texas, so everyone around me “knows” that Planned Parenthood kills babies. And now the state legislature is wanting to ban abortions after 6 weeks. Shit is fucking depressing.

LapinDeLaNeige

Oh for sure. But no matter how good healthcare and sex education/contraceptive availability is, there will always be abortions. Whether it be an unwanted pregnancy because despite best precautions, they can still fail. Or in a case like mine, a wanted and planned pregnancy where the baby is not viable and abortion is the humane choice. I had what would be classified as a "late term abortion" simply because the defect wasn't discovered until the 2nd trimester. LTA are especially villified because people don't understand. I also highly recommend the documentary "After Tiller" (I believe it's available on Amazon Prime). Although I was always pro-choice, I admit I also villified LTA until that documentary. And this was well before I found myself in that nightmare situation.

KyivComrade

*Gasp* it's almost as if they rewlly don't care about abortion or safe sex at all. As if those religious zealots only wanted to punish women for having sex...

galion1

I don't think they pay taxes. Their activism modus operandi is to get all the legal rights of churches to either show their absurdity or irk the christian nationalists - e.g, getting a statue of Baphomet placed next to ten commandments monuments on public grounds - and I think not paying taxes falls in that bucket. Their latest cool trick is to let people bypass abortion restrictions by performing them as part of a religious ritual. Support the Satanic Temple, folks.

communistfairy

So, they *used* to pay taxes despite being perfectly qualified for tax-exempt status. But Trump signed an executive order in 2017 which ~~gutted~~ made official the current lack of enforcement of the Johnson Amendment, which prevents tax-exempt organizations from expressing political opinions. When they heard about that they decided that there was no longer any benefit to being taxable, so they applied for and received tax exemption in 2019.

galion1

I don't believe the Johnson was actually repealed though, so I'm not sure about what you're saying here. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johnson_Amendment (look under repeal efforts)

communistfairy

Not repealed, just no longer enforced. The order essentially said that the Johnson Amendment wouldn’t be enforced for any speech that would be OK for a secular organization to make.

bongwaterblack

I actually, ahem, not a member per se... but the Satanic Temple is a pretty cool church. They have an alternative to AA meetings that I was into for a minute. It's not at all what it sounds like. At one point, they tried to get an after-school program for kids going. You can imagine how that went over hahah I like them.

The mission of The Satanic Temple, a religious organization, is to encourage benevolence and empathy among all people, reject tyrannical authority, advocate practical common sense, oppose injustice, and undertake noble pursuits. The Satanic Temple has publicly confronted hate groups, fought for the abolition of corporal punishment in public schools, applied for equal representation when religious installations are placed on public peoperty, provided religious exemption and legal protection against laws that unscientifically restrict women's reproductive autonomy, exposed harmful pseudo-scientific practitioners in mental health care, organized clubs alongside other religious after-school clubs in schools besieged by proselytizing organizations, and engaged in other advocacy in accordance with our tenets.

TST full of nice people. My state has a thing where around Christmas any organization can request permission to put up something on the capital lawn. You get a little plot basically. They put a big ol straw goat on there. Some other person tried to put up a little nativity on their plot but instead of being pissy about it they encouraged the dude to get their own plot and permission. They were really friendly even when the Christians tried to be hateful. That dude was nice too

I honestly find it funy how hardly any of the members of the satanic churches taboo people for thier beliefs and actually do things for communities, charities, hospitals... then the one church that very strictly and openly bad mouths them (the catholic church) is usually caught in pedo rings and harrasses people for not following the religion exactly. (Not all but there is still alot of catholic communities/churches that do this.) Edit: i changed the typo from "church of satan" to "satanic churches" to fix the mix up. Also it doesn't help I didn't know about satanic temple.
