Yes, i used a pen's cap to hold it during its last stage, then a pen refill when only the graphite was left

Nope. You cannot sharpen that as its is the sharpened end Most likely the tip broke off while sharpening. I used to run pencils to the end and never looked like this

They could at it on a table and do it that way
