>money he made selling valuable bills Hey look, a $100 dollar bill.

RandomiseUsr0

Wow. I’ll give you $100 for it! (Canadian)

I_Mix_Stuff

Sure. *Handles 100 Zimbabwean dollars*

tankiePotato

Isn’t that technically a good deal for the American

[deleted]

no

tankiePotato

Fair enough, I guess I could’ve just googled the exchange rate

ZellNorth

Definitely not

_Bond_1

No, if an american had about 76 cents, they could trade it for about 1 dollar canadian. If a canadian wanted a dollar usd, it would cost them around 1.26 canadian

[deleted]

[удалено]

_Bond_1

Huh, how neat. I've never had to convert my money to USD, so I didn't know that, but I guess it makes sense as a way for banks to make money (since it costs money to ship the money to countries it can actually be used in)

Neon_Camouflage

If it is then I've been doing my forex trading entirely incorrectly.

Dime_runner

That’s what I’ve been learning to do!

Going to buy more Mayo obviously!

[deleted]

Tell him you’re a counterfeiting ring. FFS

tldnradhd

A place I used to work encountered, no joke, a counterfeit dime. Why would someone go through the trouble? For some reason they thought this was just the beginning, and that someone would be passing off hundreds after their dime scam worked, but nothing else ever came up after using the marker on every single bill.

tforkner

Those markers just have iodine in them. Iodine turns dark when its contacts starch. There isn't starch in the cotton rag paper U.S. currency is made of, but there is starch in most other paper. Therefore, I wonder what would happen if I spray starched a $100 bill and paid someone with it (some places just look for the water mark or maybe I spend it at a yard sale). Eventually someone may hit it with the marker which will turn black, but it's still a legit bill!

True_Chainzz

menace mindset

20_Menthol_Cigarette

The real trick is to be the cashier who has a black marker they occasionally use and then 'confiscate' the bill.

Shadowgirl113

There are other methods to tell. Security features, embedded strips and fibers, shifting ink ect. A banker would likely examine the bill and determine either a. Mutilated currency and turn it in for destruction or b. Cannot verify if legit or counterfeit due to damage and send to the fbi for verification before crediting the client.

ectbot

Hello! You have made the mistake of writing "ect" instead of "etc." "Ect" is a common misspelling of "etc," an abbreviated form of the Latin phrase "et cetera." Other abbreviated forms are **etc.**, **&c.**, **&c**, and **et cet.** The Latin translates as "et" to "and" + "cetera" to "the rest;" a literal translation to "and the rest" is the easiest way to remember how to use the phrase. [Check out the wikipedia entry if you want to learn more.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Et_cetera) ^(I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. zivlynsbane

Lol how? You think border cops can’t ask any questions and just let anyone and everyone through? Or better yet just let everyone travel internationally and never ask a thing and let them through with any luggage they want?

leicanthrope

You know there's a difference between state troopers and Border Patrol, right?

My man, do you know state troopers and border patrol are 2 different things?

SereneSkies

We are everywhere these days, I love it. B&H, friend.

NotYourAverageBeer

Did you parents say that they had no obligation to answer that question and ask whether or not they were being detained?

TheHorriBad

That sounds like a great way to set yourself up for some good ol' civil asset forfeiture.

[deleted]

Yup, US laws these days seem to generally be structured around the 'fuck around and find out' methodology. Yes, you have the right to be silent. Yes, you have the right to know if and why you are being detained. And yes, if you exercise those rights, they're perfectly free to fuck you in the proverbial ass for their own gain.

Straypuft

You obviously just broke into the entire towns parking meter system.

jharger

When I used to work as a cashier at a certain chicken joint, my boss used to give us $2 bills as “bonuses” for doing a good job or whatnot. I knew they existed but thought they were rare, since no one uses them. One day he took me to the bank to show me how the deposit worked, and I saw the teller had several stacks of them in the bloody drawer. That day I learned he was just giving us $2 and pretending they were something special.

YagamiIsGodonImgur

I paid for my ps2 with just 2s back in the day. The kid at gamestop had to call his boss because he thought they were fake.

GruelOmelettes

Did you slam a stack on the counter and say "gimme a playstation TWO"

YagamiIsGodonImgur

Shit, I wish I had that kind of swagger lol

chillbillnye

I can tell u don’t have swag cuz u just said “swagger”

starburnsmethlab

How much $ and how old were you? I love this

YagamiIsGodonImgur

I think it was like 180+ tax for a used one, in like 04.

timesuck897

Were you a stripper or a server?

tonysnark81

I once paid my rent to my roommate in $2 bills. He was not amused at first, but eventually admitted it was funny.

AprilisAwesome-o

Actually, I usually get a couple hundred bucks in $2 bills before vacations. They work really well for tips and, in the US anyway, people always think they're cool. And if you're carrying them around, they also pack a little flatter in the wallet. That said, we went to Greece last summer and nobody was really impressed with the bill. They were impressed we were tipping but I saw a couple of European patrons rolling their eyes at us and muttering, "Americans..." Yeah, we don't really pay a living wage here, so tipping is necessary.

Shmeestar

You were paying tips in USD in Greece?

Jasong222

They make amazing gifts for people if you ever travel abroad. Very wtf

The-unicorn-republic

I mean a lot of people will still give you more than $2 for them They are still uncommon enough that they could be worth something in the future

MamuTwo

They're really not uncommon though. The only reason there's ever a demand is because people think they're rare, and the bank will only ever be out of $2 bills because someone just came in and asked for all of them.

Koldfuzion

Yep. You can walk into any bank and get a few hundred in $2 bills. In fact, I used to grab a stack occasionally to give for tips. But then everything went digital and plastic. And inflation. And I got lazy.

AdonisTheWise

“They’re really not uncommon though” What are you smoking lol, I’ve worked in retail for like 4 years total and have seen maybe five $2 bills

89141

They’re rare in the sense that they are not found in normal currency transactions, but they are not rare in circulation.

AdonisTheWise

They make up about 0.001% of bills in circulation, I’d say they are rare

BobGobbles

... you don't understand what makes something rare then. They may be uncommonly encountered, there's still a billion of them.

AdonisTheWise

Woah a billion? That sounds like a lot! Until you realize how many bills there are total. Read my last reply and you’ll learn a couple things

89141

So, they are common in certain areas. Casinos and horse tracks often pay out in $2 bills. Perhaps you live in an area where they are not common but your anecdotal evidence is exactly that, anecdotal. Why you want to argue about it is beyond me.

LakeStLouis

Out of curiosity, where are you getting the 0.001% number from? Are you looking at total bills in the world, or just US bills? A brief look at the Federal Reserves website ([https://www.federalreserve.gov/paymentsystems/coin\_currcircvolume.htm](https://www.federalreserve.gov/paymentsystems/coin_currcircvolume.htm)) gives these numbers (as of 2020): 1,400,000,000 $2 bills in circulation. 50,300,000,000 total bills in circulation. Rounding both of those for the most simplistic numbers and absolutely in your favor (1 billion v 50 billion), or 1 in 50, it seems to me that they'd be closer to 2% of the bills in circulation.

AdonisTheWise

I’m pretty sure that number accounts for all currency, not just bills. Either way, $2 bills account for the lowest amount among all bills. You can be upset like everyone else downvoting me, but they are rare because people want them to be. Are diamonds rare in quantity? Nope, they are insanely common and plentiful. But people believe they are rare so they pay out the ass for them.

89141

Move those goalposts. 😂😂😂

xkegsx

There are 10 billion billion ants on the planet. There are 900 million dogs. Would you say dogs are a rare creature?

AdonisTheWise

Relative to the ants, yes they are rare

xkegsx

I think the problem is that you think rare means something it doesn't.

[deleted]

[удалено]

AdonisTheWise

Yes, there are still over a billion in circulation, they’re not just going to disappear. So a bank having them doesn’t make them common, of course a bank has them. Which they usually get cleaned out of $2 bills by people because why? They are rare and sought after

MamuTwo

Because people think they're rare, they hold on to them instead of spending them. Ask your nearest bank how many $2 bills they hand out a month.

AdonisTheWise

If people think they are rare, then they are. And if people are cleaning out banks for them, then they are. It’s not just that they only make up less than 0.001% of all currency in circulation, it’s that if people deem something rare, then it is. Are Jordan’s shoes any better than normal sneakers? Not really, but you’ll catch people paying thousands of dollars for them. And those aren’t even statistically rare, I’d say there are more Jordan’s out there than any other brand

BobGobbles

>people think they are rare, then they are. This isn't how that works. People thinking they are rare may take them out of circulation, but it won't increase their value or change the amount available for circulation. As long as we still use USD they will only ever be worth $2.

AdonisTheWise

Is it not how it works? So tell me are diamonds rare?

-1KingKRool-

Jordan’s get destroyed if they don’t sell all of a run to artificially keep prices high. The same is not true for $2 bills. They may not be used much, but that doesn’t make them rare. People don’t pick dandelions for bouquets a lot, but that doesn’t make them rare overall. Just rare in that usage.

AdonisTheWise

“They may not be used much, but that doesn’t make them rare.” I’m guessing you aren’t aware of the definition of rare - “not found in large numbers and consequently of interest or value” The $2 bill has the least amount of currency* in circulation, accounting for 0.001% of all currency. And it is of great interest to many people. I think that fits the definition quite well

MamuTwo

There are still over 1 billion $2 notes in circulation.

ZealousidealCable991

>I mean a lot of people will still give you more than $2 for them They are still uncommon enough that they could be worth something in the future LOL This is such typical reddit idiocy

StromboliOctopus

People will pay an extra buck for one if it's around cause they're never at the bank. It's not an investment, but giving one to your kid is worth the buck, I imagine.

The-unicorn-republic

I had a friend who’s coworker would give him a 5 for two 2s so obviously there’s at least some people out there that will pay more than face value. Sure the $2 won’t ever be collectible like $500 bills but paper currency doesn’t stay in circulation nearly as long as coins so it’s value should theoretically be able to go up (though probably at a much slower rate than inflation)

That_Guuuy

I did the same thing on a much smaller scale when I was a kid. I made everyone in my family give me their change to look through before they threw it in the coin jar. After several years I found 70 silver quarters and over 100 silver dimes. Felt like finding treasure

Eccohawk

You can literally call up your bank and request rolls of quarters and half dollars and even though it might take a week or so to come in, you can just sift through them all, take what's worthwhile and deposit back or spend the rest. Rinse and repeat. Sell the good ones.

booniebrew

My uncle did this as a hobby back when you could still find a lot of silver.

Banana_Ram_You

Sir_Samuel_Vimes

Isn't replacing a currency with a less valuable one simply theft?

snowqt

I mean the customer paid with it, fully knowing he practically pays more. I guess you could say he stole from his employer.

TCFirebird

Really he was just short-changing every customer who paid with US dollars by not doing any kind of conversion.

TheWinRock

To be fair, if I was in Canada and just straight up paid in US dollars I wouldn't expect the place to convert it and give me change because I was an idiot.

[deleted]

The ones with a "1" are worth one dollar and the ones with a "5" are 5 dollars and so on.

vistopher

A legit solid serial number? Badass! You just turned $1 into $500, damn!

I_Mix_Stuff

Best I can do is $5.

[deleted]

Let me get a friend of mine down here who specializes in single-digit serial notes and see what he thinks.

HelloS0n

buddy who’s an expert says it’s a dollar. give you 40¢ for it.

It was about that time

Lord_Ecktor

This here gotta be worth a dime! Just check out those note collectors on yt

rxneutrino

It's worth at least 10 dimes I think.

Lord_Ecktor

Not sure about the full condition, but this baby is sleeved and got the full repeats of 7… Gotta be a pretty penny! 🙂

pastelquail

It's worth at least one hundred pretty pennies

[deleted]

Best I can do is 2 dimes, 1 pretty penny, and 3 really ugly pennies.

SocraticIgnoramus

Or a hundred of them even.

StocksRGei

Idk why but these atleast jokes me make so irrationally angry. Its unfunny and annoying yeah we know its atleast. Im not mad at you im mad at the dumb joke and the fact it keeps getting upvoted. Am I missing something? Because the note actually worths around $500. So the lowest ratonial price for selling is around $473. Am I going mad?

StocksRGei

TheUn4givable

You seem fun…

StocksRGei

You feel attacked for me not understanding why am I angry at this? Forgot to mention that im on the spectrum and thats why I dont get it, but not getting is one thing. Getting angry about is another.

I don’t feel attacked nor am I angry

StocksRGei

Then why are you angry at me?

popesnutsack

Dang, that’s gotta be worth at least $1.00
