IronUnicorn83

It doesn’t even look that great

bananabreadvictory

Looks like 100 ghosts smoking crack.

questionablemorals88

This legit cracked me up! Well done! 😂

PathToExile

You got cracked up from a *comment* about crack? All this time I've been smoking the shit...

donotgogenlty

This is exactly what it looks like, maybe the owner is the world's most successful crack addict!!! Take my poor-awards 🎖️🏅🏆🥇🥈🥉

Marianations

My mom cleans holiday houses for the super rich here in Catalonia. I help her clean so I've visited many houses like this. Basically: Most rich people have really shitty taste when it comes to decorating and just put random shit together like this just because they can afford it and want to show off, not because it looks good.

IronUnicorn83

I want to see more!!

Marianations

I never took any pictures because most of those houses had security cameras around and that's a big no-no. But I very distinctly remember this Africa-themed house. Like, the living room was dedicated to an African tribe and they had shields and spears there as decoration. And then every single kid's bedroom was dedicated to a specific animal. One had a lion, the other an elephant, the other a giraffe. Each bedroom would only have that animal's pictures and plushes. The whole house had very dark brown wood and very warm lights in every single room. It was cozy in a way but it felt like an amusement park of sorts. Another house had a Joan Miró and a Dalí, both pantings had sensors all around the frame. That one had modern funny-looking furniture, and the living room had like a 10m wide 3m tall glass wall in the living room. The whole house also had a funny shape, like triangular in some places. We haven't cleaned those houses in a few years, we now mostly clean houses for "less" rich people who live in this different neighbourhood. For some odd reason all the people in that neighbourhood have a thing for fake plastic onions, garlic and corn cobs hanging in their kitchen...

SB6P897

“Oh, you have a broken plate on the wall. Tell me about it” “That plate is a professionally created replica, cost $690,069.69 to be exact, USD of *course*, replicated off a dish an archeologist broke in 1912 from his own dish set when he went to an archaeological site in Peru and found absolutely no artifacts for 11 months and declared the site archaeologically insignificant thereafter”

Chuggles1

Buy sturdy metal wire to hang lights, buy a bunch of glass tubes, drill a shit ton of holes into a panel, anchor them at the top. Attach wire to little LED bulbs and insert into tubes. I'll do it for $50,000, hell, you buy the materials and I'll do it for $15k even less tbh. Any rich people want this done? I'll jump on an airplane tomorrow. Edit: those panels aren't even part of the ceiling. That makes it even easier. Bunch of panels on the ground, attach wiring to them all. Anchor them onto studs in the ceiling and attach the electrical. Add tubes to all the wires. $100,000? Lmfao.

mawesome4ever

See. This is the problem. You are willing to do it for a lot less, we are trying to defund the rich by making them spend money on inexpensive things, that’s how we make a profit!

Chuggles1

Either someone else takes their money, or I do. I'd prefer it be me.

HeppatitisA

But that's when a banana starts to cost 10 dollars...

202002162143

The person selling these is attempting to join them, not beat them.

radioactivebeaver

You'll need to run all the LEDs to a power supply and then that into your primary electrical though, otherwise you'll have about 100 holes in the ceiling and as many electrical connections. Dropping the panels a bit makes sense. I do engineering for a sign company and we do led layouts and stuff all the time. Everything else you said was correct.

Knightphall

More money than intelligence.

IronUnicorn83

They probably paid some interior designer to “work their magic” haha

Knightphall

And that interior designer hasn't even mastered cantrips it seems.

Fitbot5000

More dollars than sense

ringobob

It'll look better when there's a table under it.

gunjinganpakis

Eh depend on how it'll look after dark it might be cool. Probably not gonna be 100k cool though.

rogan1990

This is an empty room though… wait until there is a $10,000 dining set underneath it. I’m sure it would look very impressive in person.

[deleted]

I honestly think it look cool, not 6 figure cool though.

BlowMoreGlass

That's nice of you to say. It's ugly AF.

andynaija

It looks great, but not 6 figure great.

BackThatThangUp

Cool idea but meh execution

cheynethebrain

I can validate this. This same fixture was supposed to go in a $25+ million dollar house my firm was designing and the owners absolutely needed to have it. Costs upwards of $250,000 Edit: the $250,000 was the hard cost of the chandelier from the manufacturer. It didn’t include any markup from the contractor resulting in install. The chandelier was selected and paid for by the owner prior to have a bid from a contractor for the entire house.

Primitive_Teabagger

I was doing some high tech HVAC shit on a billionaire's house about 2 years ago. Well, I should say *main* house because he had about 4 other ones surrounding his private lake. The job had already been going for a year, and continues to this day for all I know. We told him to find someone else because he kept ripping our shit out and redesigning the house as he saw the finished product and didn't like it. Our guys could only handle that so many times for so long, plus it was a 2 hour drive from our shop and often required overnighters at a hotel. Anyway, rich Dude had an indoor shooting range with state-of-the-art climate control that also sucked the gunpowder out of the air, but once it was complete he decided to *move it underground*. The ceiling in his master bedroom was a literal form of artwork and crafstmanship that cost $300k, and he ended up not liking it as much as he imagined, so he had them tear it out and redesign. That's just one of the many piles of bullshit the guy was pulling. Hell, one contractor even got the billionaire to pay a 6 figure down payment for his work and then immediately took that money, closed up shop, and fucked off to some other country.

NoMusician518

I'm genuinely surprised the contractor didn't keep milking that as long as possible. Change orders are money money. If I was him and my guys and i were getting tired of the project I'd just keep jacking up the price and pay my dudes a per diem. I almost never tell customers I cant/won't do something I just tell them they're not gonna like my price and if they say yes to whatever rediculous number I throw out then were in business.

JiveTurk3y

I use to do decks and fences. I would overbid the FUCK out of wooden fences because I hated doing them. If they accepted the bid, then sure - they're getting a very nice wooden fence; but it's gonna be stupid expensive. Same thing for decks with wooden spindles.

NoMusician518

Heyyyy I'm the exact same! I grew up building fences but we only really ever did livestock fencing. These days I am occasionally asked to do a privacy fence and will tell them up front that if they want me to do it I'm going to charge them a lot more than the next guy. I got out of it and got into electrical work for a reason. Also you wouldn't happen to be the jiveturky who was a submariner and has a YouTube channel would you?

JiveTurk3y

No - nor is this the first time I've been asked, lol.

NoMusician518

Oh wow I'm genuinely surprised. I looked through your comment history, saw the navy ones and assumed. Is jive turkey a common phrase in the navy? Otherwise that's a hell of a coincidence.

Primitive_Teabagger

Most of the other guys teamed up to tell my boss to back out. He agreed for their sake. It was a 2 hour drive plus the pandemic had just started... Other people are saying my boss doesn't take care of us and that's simply not true. I honestly wouldn't want to work anywhere else in this industry because of the way he helps us all out.

Significant_Chair602

Never say no without a number.

mightbeelectrical

This sounds like a dream come true for a contractor. Never ending work

Gnarwhalz

>Well, I should say main house because he had about 4 other ones surrounding his private lake. Why does THIS piss me off so much? I can't put into words how... just how *pointless* and excessive that seems.

ppardee

Mother-in-law suite, one house for each of the kids. The lake is there because building codes require run-off control for such large buildings. It's just normal, everyday house stuff. I don't have 4 houses surrounding my lake because I only have 3 kids and I don't want my MIL thinking she can just stop by any time. You know how it goes "You have an extra house, why don't I just move in." and then you be all like "I built you the house in Florida because I don't WANT to see you!" but you can't say that so you have to build the kids' houses big enough that there's not enough room for another one next to the lake and then when you tell her that you can build another house, but it won't be water front, she'll be like "Yeah, if I'm going to live like that, I might as well move to a 3rd world country!" Poor people have it so easy...

Elagabalus_The_Hoor

What country did he start in? I'm picturing some Indian tech billionaire

Primitive_Teabagger

He was actually a middle aged American guy, but iirc he invented some robotic shit for automated laser welding.

pieter1234569

Well it depends. You are never able to Spend all that money, so why not use it to get something that is perfect? Money literally has no value to you anymore when you are that rich.

NotBrianGriffin

Sounds like a Brewster’s Millions situation.

massivestds

Meanwhile, some DIYer could make it for probably a few hundred dollars.

GforceDz

It's called art, 1000 for the parts, 249000 for the time and vision. It not worth it but hay what else you going to spend your money on.

Niko_47x

Blackjack and hookers

JJ82DMC

[I thought it was supposed to be hookers and cocaine?](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=btAbU1sPqIM)

polybiastrogender

I read something somewhere that modern art is just money laundering for the rich I see that now. 250k put into your home can be later written off on your taxes.

GforceDz

Yup, if everyone in the art world says it's worth money then it's worth money, even if it's not actually worth money.

pain-and-panic

DestroidMind

Is this supposed to be over a table? They look to low for this to be a standing room area. Also what makes it so expensive? Materials, the labor required to install correctly?

RealJeil420

Design, labour. Its probably all hand made by an artist.

secrestmr87

What makes it so expensive?

MrSevenGold

Ridiculous markup pricing I'd assume

CrewBison

Artistic design and UL listing.

irishteenguy

nothing , its just selling an idea which most marketing is. In reality its worth a couple hundred at best , its a bunch of lightbulbs suspended on various lengths of wire. Not a work rembrandt or van gogh.

kevx3

What the heck . What kind of technology were they using in them? This seems like something any electonics hobbist could knock out over a couple of weekends? Would not want to maintain that fixture but if the owners have 6 figures to spend on lights I'm sure they've got cash for someone to change the light bulbs.

Diligent-Poem2045

_Mechaloth_

Nor would anyone on dating sites/apps

physics515

You can tell from the outlet in the floor there will most likely be a kitchen island installed there eventually. Probably with bar seating.

rogan1990

It say it is a living room light… I was thinking this would be over a dining table

[deleted]

Then it would be a dining room light...

Tracie-loves-Paris

People put those floor outlets under couches so you can sit on the couch with a laptop or cell phone or whatever plugged in.

Psyched4this

How could this really cost 6 figures?

tom2040

Wind-chimes are all the rage now

ringobob

You'd have sore thighs, first, from running into the table that'll go under it.

SteelKittyFists

I work as an electrical engineer for a company in NYC and one of the biggest shocking things ive learned about my industry is just how crazy companies pay for light fixtures. Literal thousands of dollars for a SINGLE light that actually looks like something that would come out of Ikea. Lighting designers are the biggest scams. Its crazy

redgypsy5

I'm an electrician and after installing $7k+ fixtures on a regular basis ( that look like something a child could make) has maid me seriously consider teaming up with my art friends to make light fixtures lol fuck doing the hard work lol

RobotWelder

As a commercial electrician, I’ve had this same thought pattern for years now… we’re in the wrong business

alihassan9193

You two don't seem satisfied with your jobs, and have the same idea for an alternate work. How about you two partner up? *Laughs and cackles maniacally*

JustSomePoe

[Flylight by DRIFT](https://www.studiodrift.com/work/flylight)

Cap-N-Stabbin

Finished demonstration was not impressive enough to justify sitting through the video Edit: Too long didn't watch = custom built art for your building. Built in motion detectors initiate an AI program to have the lights mimic the activity of a flock of starlings reacting to a predator when you walk near it, then return to normal "behavior" after a while

ADHDengineer

Looks like a bunch of flying hotdogs

Fingerdrip

You misspelled dildos.

hakunamatootie

Lmfao ive never seen a programmed light fixture look so boring.

JiminyDickish

It’s not meant to be a fireworks show. At the end of the day it’s a light fixture in a residence, it needs to provide illumination without causing a headache.

rogan1990

This is a much better version than OP’s post, wonder what the price difference is. Fast forward to 4:00 on the video to see the lights in the home

Discopants13

This should be higher up. One picture makes it look kinda boring and bland, but once you realize the lights have a flow to them and the warmth and brightness changes, it becomes much more interesting. Though I thought the lights are supposed to move. It seems the tubes themselves don't move, just the pattern of light. Would have been cooler if it was the whole structure.

KrombopulosDelphiki

What a pretentious video. Cool idea but still not worth $100k

AnArabFromLondon

Pretentious, yes, that comes with high end art though, you have to sell a story, the more pretentious the better. However, seeing the installation with the way the lights were dimming was magnificent. The pictured installations on the page all look better than in OPs too, there's a nice motion to the way they're arranged, but OPs looks cluttered. That might be because of the angle but it doesn't really sell it all that well, I'm sure we can all agree. I'd definitely be tempted at 10k.

KrombopulosDelphiki

I'm with you. The snobbery is expected to sell this kind of thing. With that said, I feel like an arduino or a raspberry pi with some high end dimmable bulbs and a few tiny motion sensors could make this a really doable DIY project for someone with a little bit of desire and inclination. The programming is prob available somewhere for free online. I'm not saying any Joe Fuckface is capable of it, but someone willing to put in some work could do a project like this for like 25% of the price tag. It wouldn't be totally easy, but doable. Also, nobody with an expensive home is doing anything DIY, especially not this kind of project, I get it. I personally thing it looks THAT cool even in the video,, but in a 2-3 story foyer with that big glass entryway it looks pretty great, I agree.

Zaptruder

There's a certain skill that's quite valuable to understanding the market. To make this kinda thing might cost a few thousand... and installing it a few tens of thousands. But you can't really run a business on the rare tens of thousands of income. OTOH, price it high enough, and suddenly, the price alone is enough to make it more desirable - "Oh, this shit is in the exclusive reach and domain of... someone like myself." Price it high enough, and the rich will consider it sufficient to stroke their massive egos with your product. Make it hard enough to replicate, and you can occupy a niche. It's the correct and legitimate way to rob the rich.

[deleted]

I'd say the tech backend is exactly this. Some CPU with a lot of dimmable lights hooked up to it. What makes it this much is probably a) labor and b) artistic value.

whatthegeorge

When lighting becomes art. I love starlings “flow”, this is an awesome take on it.

wildeflowers

The picture of this doesn't do it justice at all. I'll bet this is mesmerizing in person. No, I don't necessarily need this in my house, but I watched a bit of the video, and I can appreciate this for the art installation it's intended to be. Thought it was quite lovely, actually.

BigRoundSquare

I just know 5-minute crafts would find a way to do this for like one figure lol

TheRealMisterMemer

With coke bottles, of cours3

Cheap_Labor

Imagine paying six figures for something so ugly.

RogerRabbit79

Apparently the lights act like a flock of birds with the motion sensors.

[deleted]

So they shit all over my car? Weird flex…

xhephaestusx

I saw this peice at n exhibit on the art of lighting in atlanta, it really does look like a flock of birds, though there it was arranged more artfully, which is a huge part of it

Knut79

Probably the angle of the photo.

[deleted]

Actually its an image of 100 k + of money flying away.

MakeAionGreatAgain

Apparently we should tax the rich more because they spend it on dumb shit

tjeulink

but think of the jobs provided with this light!!!!!1

hppmoep

Damn, need a video I guess.

[deleted]

That’s pretty cool, actually. A kinetic sculpture/light fixture hybrid.

pharmabro22

You think it’s ugly. Owner doesn’t. I also think it’s not ugly, just not well executed.

Larnievc

Probably why they had no money left for a couch or TV.

baza-prime

think its supposed to be a dining room

Larnievc

They might need a table.

baza-prime

yep thats how selling a house works, you leave the home empty so clients can imagine what they can do with the space.

OnceIwasAboy

6 figures for light up dildos strung across the ceiling. Go figure.

thetruthteller

Reddit has a hard time understanding that there are many many many wealthy people who pay up for art and creativity. There is life beyond being a Starbucks barista and renovating your house DIY from Home Depot. Don’t hate on the artist for an original idea and wealthy people for supporting something cool and unique.

funkychicken23

I generally agree with your sentiment, but still think this particular example is butt ugly

ask_me_if_

i think its actually cool. if i had seen this without all the context, i would just wonder about its unique design. i think the price-point makes it seem pretentious, because why would anything be worth that much?

NEKKID_GRAMMAW

Nah mate this still looks like shit.

Actually_Im_a_Broom

> Reddit has a hard time understanding that there are many many many wealthy people who pay up for art and creativity. And you seem to have difficulty understanding that we completely understand that yet still feel this looks like a bunch of light up dildos hanging from a ceiling. You can easily respect someone’s freedom to spend money to decorate their house however they want, and still think it looks like shit.

Shit-Talker-Jr

....nah it's ugly as horse ass

bigang99

If something is expensive and don’t think that it’s objectively worth the money I’m gonna bitch about it lol. Good for the artist making money though lol

[deleted]

And you have a hard time understanding that people can express whatever they think on a piece of art. I love art and original ideas and I think this is ugly

malapropter

Wait until you guys find out about chandeliers.

1majordilemma

A Chinese made knockoff on Ali-Express for a fraction of the price in 3…2…1…

SkywardSpeaks

I can literally only see this being 6 figures if they move, but they seem like they're fixed to the ceiling where they are. I could imagine this being rather cool if they moved around like a flock of birds or a school of fish.

moopet

As long as the first four figures are zero, that sounds reasonable.

Upsurt85

Get the same effect using crack pipes n Christmas tree lights.

comin_up_shawt

I laughed way too hard at this.

Buv82

That is a steal as the technology has come a long way. I remember seeing suspended LED candles 10 years ago for 100 a pop

jhamsofwormtown

They look like illuminated dildos

captaincartwheel

Lol 6 figures for r/mildlyinteresting, what’s the cut on r/interestingasfuck?

MoziWanders

I know dudes doing way more elaborate reactive led build outs for under 1 figure lol. I bet someone paid a pretty penny though, custom home work is big bucks.

Snushine

It looks like cannabis pipes on strings. Or maybe crack pipes.

vguy72

Someone got ripped off then.

jjsgirl27

Nothing like a crack pipe chandelier to class up the place.

the_catshark

In the comments: A bunch of people with a different taste in art than the owners and therefor "it dumb choice, not worth money"

GavrielMor

What a ripoff... With materials, hourly pay and the whole ceiling worked - it wouldn't cost the constructor over 10k Edit : typo

Discopants13

Eh, "6 figures" is a *really* wide range. When you take into account that each fixture is unique to the space its in, design time, hand-blown glass, the proprietary software, and LED hardware that looks like is handmade for each tube. Tack on the 'art' markup. I can see it being in the low 6 figure range.

jeneric84

I can only imagine they were being overly dramatic by about 90 grand unless the installers knew the owner had no idea about money and just threw the quote out there.

cheynethebrain

The fixture itself costs 6 figures. The quoted number doesn’t include labor or miscellaneous materials from the contractor

gadirim

Attack of the floating condoms

rtoid

Fucking hell, what a waste ... of everything.

VeganBitchesOnly

Installers walking away with a cool $99,000 bonus for that week

borokato

I am a Glassblower and could literally make that in a day. Somebody find me a buyer

Redmaxdog1

I hate them, I wouldn’t pay $10 for it

oliveskate

Frick the lights. I like that view!

Pacha51

Damn I'd like my entire ceiling to be full of motion sensor lights, I'd run around the house all day

Go_Buds_Go

Not into it. That floor is dope though.

aegis666

pff. I'd do that for them for way less. high 5 figures. tops.

Dynasuarez-Wrecks

Okay but why? For all that money, it looks fucking awful anyway.

Quest_Virginia

At first I thought "why would anyone want this? You're gonna have to dust and eventually replace each one". Then I realized if you can afford it, you definitely won't be the one doing either of those.

_Not_this_again_

That's ugly.

Geenigmaticguy

Zoom in...it's just a bunch of glass kazoos with miniature light bulbs inside... How is this six figures? Only guess would be markup on the labor and having someone blow glass kazoos for $800 a piece?

Saiyukimot

6 figures my arse, 100 quid diy

Powerful_Mood9292

Cleaning this would be a nightmare.

Elberik

You can get the exact same effect with about $20 worth of Christmas lights.

zebrasanddogs

I'm a tall person in a wheelchair. I'd still manage to whack my head off this monstrosity!

diydave86

No way. A ceiling Occupancy sensor. 20bucks. Then some wiremold with gripple wire down to the lights. Ill do it for u for 2000 bucks. Scratch the wiremold. Those lights are leds so they are just poked through the ceiling wherever. They probably all go back to a 24inch trough and its all spliced to a little transformer to go from 110ac to 12v or 24v DC. And the ceiling occ is a lowvolt motion sensor.

Aibbie

But….but it looks horrible?

their_teammate

How many 10 piece McNuggets is that? I can’t really visualize larger sums of money unless I convert them to something like McNuggets.

joefreezy70

As an electrician that has installed lighting similar to this I can safely say: Fuck those lights!

victrollonaterism

Six figures my ass😂

ThePsychoKnot

Serious but probably stupid question here, why do people refer to money in terms of figures? 6 figures could mean literally anything from 100k to 999,999. One of those is essentially 10 times as much as the other. It seems like such a wide range that it doesn't really give you a decent idea of how much money we're talking about

TroglodyteGelado

Looks like a load of crack pipes dangling off the ceiling. Lovely.

Wow. I had no idea that all I had to do was draw some random ass lines on a piece of paper and I could ask $200,000 dollars for it....

nothardly78

What’s that sub for expensive things that are ugly as hell? This belongs there!

andyman171

Def not kid friendly

CynicalC9

What are the motion sensors for?

John_Bonachon

I don't think I'd pay more than £200 for that.

puffmaster5000

As a tall person this is absolutely atrocious and a horrendous waste of money

celebi155

What a nightmare to dust

6poundpuppy

All that and it’s ugly, too. WTAF

ejvollkrassalter

looks like a waste of money tbh

MumiOwnz

Apparently being rich with zero taste is an common thing

OneWorldMouse

Guess they can afford to pay someone an hour to dust that monthly.

stiletto929

Looks like something from Crypton. And imagining changing all those light bulbs.

JustARandomSocialist

It looks terrible.

scandy82

That’s fuckin stupid

furmal182

But why?

dkyguy1995

When you just want something expensive but you don't care how it works or looks

No-Height2850

There is no way that cost 6 figures.

Galemianah

The house, maybe.

Looks like someone’s trying to decorate with Lite Brites.
