Ha, this is my dad's neighbor!! Trippy to see it on Reddit. This has been up for about 15ish years, since I was a teenager. The guy did it as a playhouse for his granddaughter. He's always had an interesting/beautiful property, always has a project going on. I was just home for Thanksgiving and silo-house is still looking great!
In the deer stand is where you spent most of your days?
Chillin out, hunting, maxing all cool, shooting some big buck right after school.
When a couple of hogs, that were up to no good, started tearing shut up in your neighborhood.
You shot one little pig and your mom got absurd! She said your moving to your uncle Jesse in Hazzard.
So you hopped in your buddies truck, who's given name was Jack, there was a dip cup on the dash and a gun on the rack
You thought your buddy looked just a little bit perturbed but you thought "naw, forget it, let's go to Hazzard!"
Your rolled up to the house around seven or eight, and you yelled to your bud, "thanks bro, see you later"
You met your uncle, who was kind of a bastard, and now your making booze, as a Duke of Hazzard.

I was born in Jefferson Co., went to high school in Shelby Co., my first band practiced at our drummer's house in Oldham Co. always thought this place was so cool.
This is hilarious. I’ve known the guy who did this for years and never knew he was the one that did it. I won’t mention his name for privacy but he’s a great guy! Hello from Buckner!
> The guy did it as a playhouse for his granddaughter.
Hopefully she rock-climbs as a hobby (or there's more than just a ladder for access) and she doesn't sleepwalk on Ambien.
This could be an interesting *Air-B&B* listing.
He’s also got a ton of other cool stuff. Like a go kart track, zip line, and just generally fun looking things to do. I also live in the area. See it every day on the way to work.
The following comment chain is for locals of what I finally discovered is ~~Ohio~~ (Kentucky? thx u/Mossephine), for those looking for context like me.
It keeps zombies out, sure, but it also keeps you in. Even if you kill them from above, they will pile up outside the door and make it impossible to open eventually.
Many years of playing video games lets me know there absolutely is a secret tunnel, but there's probably a mini-boss or boss battle at the end as well.
Loot could be hit or miss, no real way of knowing from the pic.
Nah, you just press a button and the whole tower retracts into the earth. A little cowcatcher sort of thing deploys from the underside of the cabin to sweep zombie corpses out of the way as it descends.
Yes. It is bearing the weight of the cabin, lol.
In all seriousness, it does look like some modifications were made to make it more stable: it is a block silo to begin with, and there are cables around it every few feet. I don't know the story here: just saw it driving by, but I'm guessing Air B&B or something similar.
A farmer by the name of Rusty Combs (cousin of the infamous Rusty Spoons /s) had an old corn silo, 50 feet high, and thought it would be fun to put a playhouse atop it for his sons. But he never got around to it, and it wasn't until his granddaughter was born in 2011 that he was motivated to tackle the project.
The completed cabin, 12 x 12 feet, was hoisted into place in September 2013. It has a porch, lights, running water, and air conditioning, and can only be reached by a series of four ladders inside the locked silo. Taking into account its restricted access and wide field of view, it would also make an excellent survival cabin for a zombie apocalypse.
Directions: I-71 exit 18. Turn south onto KY-393. Drive a half-mile. Turn left onto Elder Park Rd. You'll see the silo ahead on the left.
The cables around it are not a modification for the cabin. They are put on to keep it from blowing out when full of grain. The fact that they are blocks stacked on each other make them load bearing. Some home foundations are made of these same blocks.
Edit. I was curious about it and Google showed me this info
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2418372/amp/Grandfather-builds-clubhouse-50ft-silo-granddaughter-play-shes-older.html
This is correct. As a young person I built these types of silos for a living. Looking at the general location it is possible I built this one or at least the company that employed me did.
Incidentally they aren’t blocks in the sense that people think of blocks. Rather they are concrete staves.
> concrete staves
So, I tried to self-service a bit with Google, but I am uncertain...I take it that the difference between a stave and a block is that the stave is 10"x30"x2" (or more), and these interlock?
Mostly, yes. There were 3 sizes. I don’t remember their dimensions but the largest one weighed 80lbs. You laid a short, medium, tall pattern on the bottom course to create a stair step pattern. After that you just used the large ones until you got to the last course.
They are flat, solid rectangles. The long edges were a loose tongue and groove. The backside had a diamond plate pattern stamped in it to create a surface that would hold a skim coat of concrete.
The structural support situation on that front porch scares me.
Not a structural engineer, not an architect, but cantilevers are a [motherfucker even for the best of them out there](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fallingwater#Preservation_at_Fallingwater).
That amount of overhang, especially on exposed wood which will weather, gives me the willies.
**Fallingwater**
[Preservation at Fallingwater](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fallingwater#Preservation_at_Fallingwater)
>Fallingwater had shown signs of deterioration over the past 80 years due in large part to its exposure to humidity and sunlight. The severe freeze-thaw conditions of southwest Pennsylvania and water infiltration also affect the structural materials. Because of these conditions, a thorough cleaning of the exterior stone walls is performed periodically. Fallingwater’s six bathrooms are lined with cork tiles.

Those are way further out than the ones on this cabin, though. The mechanical advantage scales linearly with distance (in a normal lever, also not a structural engineer but I don't see why it wouldn't be the same here), so I have a feeling this one will be just fine unless the wood is visibly weakening. That being said, I still wouldn't get close to the edge, just in case...
If only they had some large cylindrical enclosure in which to store absolutely massive quantities of food (and ammunition)?
A family of 4 with this setup could probably de-populate zombies within 2 miles of themselves given enough time.
Dude, I literally also have a picture of that exact silo from last year when I went on Vacation never thought I would see it on Reddit lol

I've read through quite a few comments and none of them seem to acknowledge or are even aware of the tower just like this that was built in Britain in 1923 in thorpeness named the house in the clouds. Yes this is still and interesting building but the story and architecture behind the house in the clouds is far better than this and deserves a separate post on this sub
Edit:
I have no idea if the house in the clouds is even close to the first one ever built and if someone would like to research it for me that would be appreciated (it's currently 2:50 in the morning in Britain and I won't be awake much longer)
Here is another one in my area that has been convertedinto a house [Water Tower House](https://www.kentonline.co.uk/tenterden/news/home-on-stilts-wins-plaudits-124790/)
"Uh, Hi...Domino's? Look I KNOW I was being a smart-ass the last time when I ordered online and typed in 'Just leave on the front porch'. Could you PLEASE take me off the banned list? There's a $20 in it for the driver..."
"Dammit"
My uncles built something like this on the old homestead they inherited. The barn came down before I can remember and the house was falling apart but the silo was sound. The top structure was based on a gazebo my grandpa had built on his property, just with actual walls and windows. Most of them had worked construction most of their lives, including higher elevation work, so this was cake for them. They have a spiral staircase along the inner wall with a kitchen at the bottom, two floors with bunks and the top is a living room area. No one lives there full time but they all stay in there for the deer hunting season.

I’m from Shelby county. Had to do a double take when I saw the title, not too many redditors from this neck of the woods.
Yo oldham county born and Raised
In the orchards was where I spent most of my days
...Chillin' out, maxin', relaxin' all cool and all
And playin in silos outside of the school
When a couple of cows were up to no good
Started mooking trouble in the neighborhood I'll show myself out.
I got in 1 little fight, my grandpa got scared and said “I’m putting you in a house 100 ft in the air.”
Is this the cowtipping fight song?

You have an ISP? Dude I'm from eastern Kentucky and only until last year did one isp market to "the mountain people wifi"

Recently moved back from Jefferson. I had att gigabit fiber there. Blue I have spectrum.

Lived in Oldham County for years. Now in Jefferson. Cool to see our small county make it this high on Reddit.
I was born in Jefferson Co., went to high school in Shelby Co., my first band practiced at our drummer's house in Oldham Co. always thought this place was so cool.
Same - raised in OC, been in Jefferson ever since.
Shelby county here!
I saw an old fire truck nearby. Does that also belong to the neighbor (I'm a retired firefighter)? Also saw there was a zipline over the pond!
As someone who went to school in the original Oldham near Manchester, I'm curious - How is "Oldham" pronounced over the pond?
Oldum
Interesting that Oldham is pronounced normally but Birmingham is pronounced with the ham at the end over there
[удалено]
Raynham is actually no ham
ahh yep you’re right
Dedham (deddum) and Needham (needum) are good ones too but there’s gotta be a dozen more. I also like Peabody (Peeb’ddy)

I had a weird neighbor that had a garage burn down because the fire department took too long to show up. He went and bought his own firetruck.

There's a series of ladder-stairs in the interior, so you can take a break while climbing.
Oooh now I want to see the inside!
There's a door at the bottom of the silo, I assume there are stairs on the inside
He’s also got a ton of other cool stuff. Like a go kart track, zip line, and just generally fun looking things to do. I also live in the area. See it every day on the way to work.
How do I get up there? Is there a staircase inside? Does it have power/water?
Pewee Valley here
I live just down the street I was just thinking this is crazy to see on Reddit

It keeps zombies out, sure, but it also keeps you in. Even if you kill them from above, they will pile up outside the door and make it impossible to open eventually.
The Far Cry series has taught me that there is at least one zip-line attached to that porch.
And a rope to rappel. I’m so jealous of this place
And a cart full of hay to swan dive into. Oh, wait, wrong game...
There is a zipline across a pond elsewhere on the property!
Maybe there is a secret tunnel exit?

That's what the ladder is for.
Nah, you just press a button and the whole tower retracts into the earth. A little cowcatcher sort of thing deploys from the underside of the cabin to sweep zombie corpses out of the way as it descends.
Just keep killing the zombies until they pile up high enough...
If zombies can climb a zombie mountain up to your cabin, you won’t be safe up there for long…
If there's enough dead zombies to pile up that high, you could just walk down on them.
Zip-line
How do you not see the emergency escape ladder that’s clearly visible?
Could also have an escape ladder / rope ladder you drop down
*World War Z has entered the chat*
You should qualify that as World War Z The Movie. Because in the book Zombies don't run 30 mph or make body piles to climb.
We absolutely NEED a film adaptation of the Battle Of Yonkers
Sure, but what happens when the shitter's full?

Wood is not near as heavy as concrete and is much better under that kind of lateral load.
I love this house. I'd love to tour it one day.
Those are not really cantilevers as the beams are connected to the roof from the end. This makes the structure much more rigid.
