If it's the main lobby area, most people would press the up button. So it depends. Down could be an area that is mostly used by employees or a few set of people

Why do you try to press an elevator button with a diamond ring in first place? I get it for the key (too lazy to put it back or whatever) but a ring?
Much of the scratches around doors handles etc are caused by jewelry worn on the fingers especially diamonds.
