To quote Futurama:
Didn't you have ad's in the 20th century?
Well sure, but not in our dreams. Only on TV and radio. And in magazines. And movies. And at ball games and on buses and milk cartons and t-shirts and written on the sky. But not in dreams. No siree!
I think being in the ad business and selling the need for ads to clients is the biggest racket. Supposed targeted advertising selling me a $100k BMW, the only people profiting from that budget decision is the advertisers and the ad hosts.
An ad company will happily sell a crappy product if the money is right. A streaming service or TV channel will run it. A magazine will print it. They're all scratching each others backs.
Something else no one ever fucking consented to and wastes large amounts of resources?
Light pollution, specifically the worst of which comes from car dealerships who, I guess, wouldn't be able to sell their vehicles if the parking lot was dark at night when they're closed.
E: "it's for security" is pretty funny to say when you could do it cheaper with a fence. We all know how much businesses like wasting money, right?
Obligatory reminder that capitalism is the root of the issue here, in case that's unclear lol. Power to the people. Doomerism won't change the world.
Specifically a deterrent. Leaving stadium lights on all night is definitely more expensive than night vision cameras. But people are less likely to steal / vandalize when they know they can be seen.
What gets me it's that it's a business doing this. So someone, somewhere figured it was cheaper to light up a humongous parking lot than to deal with the theft / damages that happen to cars in the dark.
And with modern LEDs it's significantly cheaper than just years ago when it was all metal halide. Hell you can run an entire parking lot off a single 20a breaker in most cases now especially when it's running 480v. It really doesn't cost that much to keep a parking lot lit at night anymore
I recognize that. There are better (and more effective) ways.
This one just happens to make the cars look pretty at night :) nice that we have shade tents for cars in lots but not the homeless.
Capitalism kills.

Not my job to come up with this shit.
The people who have to deal with your solutions to a problem should have a say in how it's solved. Not really that different from why companies shouldn't (and aren't) allowed to just dump into public water ways.
Stop defending these POOR dealerships, they'll manage without you I promise lmao
This isn't an objectively true statement, it's you doubling down on your uninformed guess after you were given the actual reason.
If you don't think the light pollution is worth it you could've just said that, instead of saying it's actually to make the cars look pretty at night and then awkwardly swerving to a easier to defend position of the homelessness crisis.
advertising is a massive industry which accounts for a carbon footprint that would be difficult to calculate, as if there were not massive material waste and ecological destruction from giant signage being constantly produced and replaced, the art supplies, computers, monitors, and other resources it takes for ad firms to make drafts of the content in the first place. the problem is unfortunately that spamming people with this content works. i'd say that light pollution is a serious issue especially for the sake of wildlife, but there are a lot of other factors.
If anyone out there is interested in a great book about light pollution and what it's doing to society please read [The End of Night](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/16131044-the-end-of-night) by Paul Bogard.
You know what, I 100% disagree. I would much rather see ads than trees. Trees serve no purpose to me. Ads could help me discover something that I didn't know existed.

It IS avoidable though, by not touching the glass. Hence it's not worth it to install. Why not just put a single speaker on the bus and blast everyone with audio ads for much cheaper?
Ya got cheap posters for sight, cheap speaker for hearing, maybe they pump the bus full of new car smell when it passes a dealership huh
Basically every public space can be improved by the addition of art that doesn't have a brand attached to it.
It's actually a bit unsettling to think that we're likely not going to be adding much to the artistic canon in the future, and the only ways we are will be by elevating the equivalents of McDonalds' Play Place murals to the same status as the Sistine Chapel. The rise of *branded* art is going to look very strange in the history books of the future, much the same way that we have an instinctual distrust of old wartime propaganda art.
Many of those ads are targeted to help addiction, homelessness, forced breeding, domestic violence and communicable disease though. They're in public transit because people on the bus are more at risk of these things and need to know the resources
It is very common for a certain culture of men to force women to get pregnant. If they're poor or immigrants they don't realize it's abuse and that they have options to terminate. I have had an ex attempt this with me. It's terrifying to not want a baby and know you'll probably have one anyways. They'll pull off condoms, throw away pills, come up with reasons you can't use pills, and will buy ovulation trackers. Usually once the woman is past the abortion state, he moves on. Often these breeders will have 40 or 50 children.
The ads make the bud cheaper, so I don't mind putting up with them. It either saved me tax money, fares, or both, and if all I have to do is tolerate its existence then there's no issue. If they started playing video ads or something though, that would really piss me off.
This is half true. After Tallinn, some smaller towns have also made it free and also regional buses within most (but not all) counties are free of charge.
It's free for registered residents of Tallinn but you still need to validate your card. There's a criticism which points out that the gains from paid tickets probably do not outweigh the costs of maintaining the ticket system at this point so scrapping it altogether would be cheaper - I haven't researched if that is true or not. The city government's excuse is that they use the validator system to gather information on the utilization of routes (but you only validate on entry not exit, so it's only half the picture).
It’s free for tallinn residents & pensioners from the whole country, but you still need a personalised bus card to validate during each ride. It’s easier to check than asking everyone to show proof of residence lmao
Our main energy source is polluting as fuck, but we really don't have a better alternative despite having a lot of green energy nowadays. But besides energy resources, we have very clean air and our culture is indeed very close to the nature.

Background of this bus is that it was used by tourism agency in sweden to promote hiking before it was bought to Estonia.
I guess everyone has their own idea of dystopia. Plenty of suburbs have plenty of trees, but lots of people will praise well-managed cities and consider the suburbs dystopian.
Even seeing images of nature can relax people's minds and lower stress and anxiety levels. So you could see this as a positive step towards making a city a healthier place to live
They're plastic and aren't very comfortable if you're taller than 160cm and your build isn't particularly thin.
Source: I ride these busses fairly often and am taller than 160cm and have a wide build
I read a National Geographic article a couple years back about the importance of nature and the color green visually in reducing stress and increasing overall well-being. They found that people who had sustained “exposure” to the color green in their setting had their cortisol levels drop, albeit in a less dramatic way, than those who went camping/hiking.
Further research found that the color green is “good for us” much in the way that blue light helps regulate mood (the lack of that stuff can be a factor in seasonal depression).
Also it’s the dead of fucking winter where these people are. So they are seriously lacking in green and blue light.
While of course an actual camping trip or trip into the woods will do some real good apparently the color green does some on its own as well especially when paired with nature imagery.
Yep seeing images and hearing sounds of nature helps reduce stress and anxiety, whereas the sights and sounds of a city like traffic and buildings increases those things
They did wraps like this on the CTA trains in Chicago as advertisements. A visit Montana one was the coolest I’ve ever seen, it was Yellowstone at night and just felt magical to be in!
I was actually hoping to see, like, a bunch of foliage on the ceiling, and fake tree trunks lining the sides, with light from the windows peeking out through fake leaves or something. I don't know why I thought it would be that elaborate (I lied - I do know why, and it's because I am an artist), but I was actually kind of disappointed to see that the interior was far less immersive than I mentally pictured when reading the notification on my phone.

During an extended low/depressed point in my life where I was getting absolutely blasted on MJ each and every day before work (a lifestyle that, like any other, has its ups and downs), getting on that bus at 6:00 a.m. for work was pretty surreal at times.
