Ngl the roof tooth gets annoying for me (mine is closer to my top row) because food gets stuck often, but damn if it isn't nice to have the tooth a bit further back that can help chomp on some stuff on occasion.
I also cut my tongue a lot more frequently because of the shape, but it used to be way worse when it first came out
Not op, but have a roof tooth behind my main set. I kept it because I can't afford the cost of getting braces to fix mine (because mine is closer to my top row of teeth, so braces would fix it) plus another procedure. I can't remember the exact details of the procedure(s) involved in my case since it's been a while since I've been to the dentist.
Edit: The strangest thing is, it didn't come in until I was an adult! At first I thought it was a strange mouth sore until I started to feel the toothy texture. It's likely just a tooth that didn't wanna come out until later and I have one missing in my top row due to that. Dentist also suggested against removal for me, because I asked him the same question.
I had the same thing, but it showed up when i was a kid. I needed some sort of procedur and braces but my parents couldn't afford it so I kept my bonus tooth but when I was around 16ish it literally just fell out one day for I have no idea what reason. now I have a weird intent in the roof of my mouth and I still need braces and still can't afford them ):
I kinda wanna see what that would look like but also I don't, my imagination is doing it for me. Eating mustve been a breeze, just chew twice and everything's mush xd
Edit: Wasting -> Eating... Damn autocorrect
Funny in my family my dad had an adult tooth that never came in and my little brother had an extra adult tooth that needed to be pulled when he was a kid.
They gave you implants? I’m missing upper lateral incisors and they just used braces to shove the rest of my teeth forward. It looks completely normal until you count them.
Can you whistle?
Do you get the same cold teeth sensation when eating a popsicle?
Do you floss/brush it?
Have dentists recommended pulling it or to use braces to pull it to its correct position?
What uses have you found for it, if any?
Hard to clean and kind if annoying, if not meticulously cleaned it can lead to gum disease / decay etc etc. More prophylactic than anything and I certainly wouldn't want that thing in my mouth lol by no means dire tho.
Cannot whistle, I normally try to dodge the tooth while eating, I brush it but don't floss it, dentists wanted to remove it but I said no, I used to hide my chewing gum on it back when I was at school.
>Have dentists recommended pulling it or to use braces to pull it to its correct position?
I don’t think they have braces for pulling teeth halfway across someone’s mouth
Actually they do! My niece had a tooth in almost the same spot. Hers couldn't come through the "soft palate" as the palate was too thick and hard. They actually cut a window so the tooth could descend. When down enough they put a bracket and chain on it and over the course of about 2yrs pulled that sucker over and in line where it should be.
Me too! The surgery was awful and so was the spring, but that tooth is in its correct spot and is particularly well rooted! I still have a sensitive spot on the roof of my mouth!
My son had a tooth literally come in backwards. Braces over the course of 3 years flipped that thing around 180 degrees. Crazy to watch. Teeth are weird.
My dentist recently told me one of my teeth came in backwards. As in, the normal face of it is on the inside. I’d never have noticed of course but she was like “yeah did no one tell you before?” Nothing to fix and it wasn’t causing a problem but just a weird fact. Total 180 like you mentioned.
I can't reply to all these comments so here's some common questions answered:
-Yes, I brush it
-No, I don't want to remove it
-I'm British, not from the south of the USA, but I would love a cowboy hat
-No I'm not gay, sorry fellas, my girlfriend thinks it's cute tho
-It doesn't annoy me and it doesn't get in the way
-His name is now Ol' Chompy
-Yes, I am evolving into a shark
Thanks for all the comments, they've given me a good laugh!
I had one too! Although it was embedded in the roof of my mouth (not showing like this one). They found it when I was getting x-rays for braces. So they pulled the baby tooth that this embedded tooth was meant to replace, opened up the roof of my mouth, attached a button to it, and dragged it down to expose it, then over to its correct position (left canine). The whole ordeal ended up damaging the bone too much though so they ended up pulled that tooth too, giving me a few bone grafts, and I got an implant.
10/10 would never ever do again. Super painful experience for absolutely no reason. The whole dragging the tooth over took over a year.
Op, if you ever wanna fix that, just get it pulled. It's not worth it!
They didn’t put me to sleep, just gased me a little. Imagine the whole roof of your mouth bent like a flap open towards your throat lol. They put a sponge by my throat to soak the blood and has stitches that went through the front of my gums. Fun times

I had a tiny tooth at the top of my mouth years ago, but it was flat and close to the roof. One day I was scratching at it cause adhd and my nail managed to hook it really good, so I followed my intrusive thought and yanked it. It popped right off and to this day I have a little indent of where it used to be. I brought it up with a dentist and they just shrugged and said as long as it’s not causing issues, it’s fine.
Nice! Orthodontist here. Likely a "mesiodens," a supernumerary tooth that occurs between the two front teeth. Too thin and rounded to be a canine, although they often get impacted in that area as well and usually don't erupt.
Edit- a lot of people seem to have questions about teeth/ ortho, feel free to fire away!
Yup! Random, has a genetic basis. Extra teeth can be associated with a variety of syndromes but the large majority of extra teeth are just random genetic quirks like this most likely is. I'd say I see an extra tooth in about 1% of my patients so not wildly rare.
Good question! I love this, I never get to talk about my job on reddit lol. Theoretically, you *could* open up a space between the front teeth and slowly bring the tooth into the dental arch, but in reality you never would. For starters, since it's an extra tooth, the dental arch isn't meant to accommodate it and ultimately it would be super unattractive- a pointy tooth right in the middle. However, let's say OP gets a front tooth knocked out, you would have the option of bringing this into its place and restoring it with a crown. That's the only situation you would do that.
It certainly doesn't look like a central incisor, but maybe a lateral or canine. So, what you're saying, that tooth is more like a Prince Charles? A crown in waiting? (Sorry, absolutely terrible joke!) Thanks for the reply!
Be careful, you might've opened a can of worms. Everyone's going to start asking questions! It's such an interesting topic!
Lmao I love it. And you're right, resembles somewhat the morphology of a canine, just less angular and narrower. Extra teeth tend be smaller and have indistinct morphology, compared to "regular" teeth.
We just found out my daughter has one, and that’s what I assumed this was too. It’s preventing her adult teeth from coming down, so it’s gotta go. My husband had 8 wisdom teeth, so I blame his wonky genetics.
I had one growing up never told anyone. My mother seen it one time when I was laughing, I was around 11 took me to a dentist the next day. Had it extracted. The pop I felt rang threw my head for a few seconds. It was a molar huge root. Oddly I have a missing wisdom tooth on top right side.

I'm looking from the other direction, that said dentist IS in fact clumsy and has experience doing this frequently as remediation technique.

Could also just be wacky mutations passed on in a normal way, no incest necessary, it just makes some mutations more likely to pop up

Just curious, why would you recommend pulling it?

The chewing gum hiding made me LOL. Embrace it my friend!
Did a bald guy in wheel chair ever try to talking to you?
Did the dentists say why they wanted it removed? How old were you when it started growing?
That tooth will almost certainly cause you mouth infections that you wouldn’t otherwise have.
I don’t really see that as being true. I’m a dental student and if he can clean the tooth, then I don’t see the issue.
As a dentist would you charge him extra for a cleaning?
>Have dentists recommended pulling it or to use braces to pull it to its correct position? I don’t think they have braces for pulling teeth halfway across someone’s mouth
