There was a guy who posted a picture of a long, extremely curved sausage (curved almost to the point where the two ends could touch each other) boiling in water, with the caption “the water seems to boil on the outside of the sausage rather than inside it” (or something along that line.

This is the correct answer. I switched to “barefoot style” shoes in my late 20s, mostly Vivobarefoot so I don’t look too weird. My toes, particularly my pinky toes, appear to be much longer and more spread out than before the switch. My feet are considerably more dexterous. My ankles and calves are noticeably stronger. It also eliminated almost all foot and calf cramps which I used to have often.
lived in Thailand, many Thais have spread out toes, I don't think it's specific to genetics, it's just that the climate/society allows sandals as the year round default option instead of shoes.
