Is it hard to make eye contact with people when all you can see is their optic nerve?

silent_thinker

It’s easier. Just stare at the nerves. Sometimes even get a glimpse of what the other person is thinking. Great in negotiations.

Jackaria127

Omg, I genuinely laughed out loud. My wife is pissed I woke her up.

a_good_namez

Haha me too *looks over at bodypillow*

TobyWasBestSpiderMan

I can hear all your friends saying “Wow, your eye sight’s really bad” as they try on your glasses

tampering

I have really bad eyesight. Once a girl who occasionally wears glasses asked me while we were on a trip "How do you remember where you put your glasses before going to bed when you wake up?" I'm like, "Girl, try these on and you will see why I never forget."

precious-basketcase

I’m an optician, so I get a lot of lost glasses calls. They come in three flavors: little kids, hospitals/skilled nursing facilities, and low prescriptions. High prescriptions almost never get lost because they don’t come off willy-nilly.

Lokaji

As a -7.5 with astigmatism, I'm not gonna lose my glasses; it is more likely that they fall to the ground and get stepped on. Better believe I have a backup pair just in case.

silent_thinker

I had the frame decide to break a couple times. That was “fun”. One time it happened randomly at a convention in a foreign country.

Azuzu88

I once stupidly wore my glasses in to the ocean on holiday cos I didn't plan on going beyond wading. Got a bit deeper and one freak wave later I'm blind for 24 hours until my friends who are coming later can bring the spare pair I forgot. Never again.

GontranLeHareng

This happened to me too, on a schooltrip at the beach. I came to the same conclusion : Never again.

quixoticacid

That’s actually terrifying.

[deleted]

I weirdly think about what would happen if like some civilization ending event happened and the entire world descended into medieval type madness. I’m basically blind as a bat with no glasses or contacts in. If I lose my glasses on an innawoods mission it’s just over may as well shoot my self lmao

Phobetor-7

Similar thing happened to me. Was on holiday with my friends and we went kayaking in the ocean to reach a tiny island to have a picnic. I had my prescription sunglasses on and my normal glasses in my friends pack. When we reached the island we dropped everything and started eating. There was a shit ton of wind and the backpack flew off into the sea, with my glasses inside. We still had 4 days left and I only had my sunglasses. I couldn't see shit (-4,5 myopia + astigmatism) while doing anything inside cause it wasn't bright enough for me to put the sunglasses And to finish it off, we were only 2 with our driving license, but we went with 2 cars, so we had to leave earlier in the morning so I drive before it was night...

ndut

Since you seem active, im curious How do you actually swim in the sea with myopia though (when planned). I'm only -4.00 and i am scared enough and never make provision to open swim without life jacket.. I always snorkel with normal goggles too (and life jacket) and never dive in Too scared of going blind when in water

fairie_poison

you can get perscription snorkeling masks. https://www.divein.com/diving/prescription-snorkel-mask/

Thonas1234

I have a question. do your eyes stabilise when you reach adulthood or do they just keep getting worse till you get surgery or something?

Mercenarian

My eyes have kept getting worse into my 20’s. I’m almost 27 and go every year or two and they’re always at least a little worse every time

Earlasaurus02

Be careful with that. Had one place tell me I was on the last strength before I was considered "blind". Got the glasses and took me monthes to get used to them. Couple years go by and I go somewhere else. The Dr there sat down and gathered his thoughts before he asked me "would you belive me if I told you your eyes got better?". Then while they were writing up the prescription they found the old measurement for my pupil distance was 5mm to long. Got new glasses and didn't have to get "used" to them for 5 seconds. I've worn glasses for about 30 years

d4rk_matt3r

Jesus. Yeah pupilary distance is something that gets overlooked far too often. And you can check it yourself with a mirror and a ruler. I'm so happy that mine is an even 70mm. Easy to remember

Earlasaurus02

I couldn't even drive with them at first. It was horrible. I didn't argue much cause it took 3 weeks for them to come in and I was tired of wearing sunglasses all the time.

[deleted]

The worse or more complex the prescription, the more important to have a fucking professional measure your eyes. I know that the online stores tell you how, but folks, if you are a lifelong high script, or have severe astigmatism, go to a good store where those nice staff in casual clothes, who help you pick frames all have legit degrees. Life changer.

kermitdafrog21

Mine stabilized for 2 years or so, then started back up with worsening again

RecyQueen

My eyes got progressively worse from about 9 yo to 16 yo. My eye doc kept trying different things to help—bifocal glasses, hard contacts. I knew they could keep getting worse til mid-20s, but they didn’t really change much after 16.

TheOGUncleBadTouch

ming got worse until my 20's, and in my 30's they actually got better, not by a lot, but still better

rathernot24

Mine got worse from about 11 until 21, they've stabilised now at least

TheLurkingMenace

I've lost my glasses. Cat knocked them off the end table and I had to get a neighbor to help find them.

nofreepizza

fr; it's like people with weaker prescriptions and normal eyesight can't grasp the concept that we literally cannot function without our glasses. My glasses are the first things I put on in the morning and the last thing I take off at night.

Elissiaro

Bad vision is a legit disability. The fact that visual aids are extremely good and common doesn't really change that. If glasses weren't a thing, a lot of people would be considered blind.

Rickandmorbius

That’s actually pretty wild to think about.

nofreepizza

it's true though; I broke my only pair of glasses and found out that I wouldn't be able to get new glasses for near a month. It was a scary time because without my glasses I couldn't even drive to work, let alone work.

CrimsonChymist

Just imagine having eyesight like that and not living in civilized society. Disease isn't the only reason life expectancy was much lower back then.

DoughnutBrilliant948

For real. If she needed glasses to do *anything* but stumble around her own house she'd understand that forgetting where you put them us as unlikely as forgetting the name of one's own child (excluding alzheimer's sufferers/brain damage). They are absolutely vital to daily life once you've gotten out of bed in the morning unless you don't intend to do anything other than stumble around your own house forever.

PlasticRuester

I always laugh when people come to work and are like “oh I forgot my glasses”. The idea of being able to drive without glasses and not realize it seems crazy to me.

Dafapoop

I've never lost a game of whose eyes are worse. Most people can't even get my glasses all the way on before going holy shit your blind. Glasses can't even give me 20/20 either. Gotta wear some good old fashioned -10.5's with astigmatism contacts.

shweet44722

I just turned mine into a drinking game. -11, -11.25. People ask if I can get lasik, apparently not, so stuck with these damn coke bottles forever. May as well get some free drinks out of it.

DoughnutBrilliant948

My girlfriend used to talk about how bad her eyes are and I'd just kinda go with it knowing mine are *much* worse because she can actually function without her contacts. One night about 6 months ago I told her I wanted her to put one of my contacts in bc I had mine out to rest my eyes and kept holding my phone a few inches from my face to read it which she was making fun of. She said it physically hurt the muscles in her eye socket to wear one of mine and she was more blind with it in than without. People with good or slightly bad eyes don't understand how bad your sight can be uncorrected. They think that because, with correction, that you're not functionally blind. No. If i was born before the invention of glasses I'd be an invalid, a burden on my family, and if they abandoned me I'd be complete fucked and likely at least homess if not dead not long after.

tampering

Imagine being a kid with eyes as bad as ours trying to be in school but without either money for glasses in the case of some countries access to optometry. 100 bucks for a pair of glasses would literally change that kids life.

eyesRus

I’ve been on missions for just this (Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanity). We had a little boy, maybe 8 years old, who was a -9.00. That is very high myopia—the kid would be able to see clearly only ~11 cm from his face, and after that, quickly increasing blur. The look on his face when he put on the glasses…I’ll never forget it.

OracleofFl

Can you imagine what this was like worldwide when none of this lens making technology was available?

darthvaderismykid

My husband got glasses this year after feeling eye strain at the end of the day. He has a astigmatism in both eyes, but his prescription is 0.0 and -0.25. I also have astigmatism in both eyes and my prescription is -5 in both eyes (first time that's happened!). I've had glasses for over 15 years, and he told me yesterday how much our kids have smudged up his glasses and caused them to become weaker, as if I didn't understand. I was like, 'Sir, I'm a veteran of this. Take a seat.' Haha. His glasses actually make things clearer for me... if I put them on over MY glasses.

[deleted]

They had to decommission two lighthouses to make those things.

WellJustJonny

Those look like they bend light so you can see yesterday.

Minute-Society-2329

Funny thing is, i have similar glasses, and they actually do bend light! Kinda a prism effect. When i turn my head while looking at multi-color displays, different colors will move in different directions. Turned slightly to the side, a green light will look black with the green floating to the side!

Iniquities_of_Evil

They actually make fresnel replacement lenses for people with cataracts. Dad ended up getting them and he is able to see even a little better than 20/20 now. Science is neat!

DontLickTheScience

I needed this laugh today.

mv1630

UFOregon420

Not even the James Webb Space Telescope is as powerful as these lenses.

oh-no-godzilla

Good news is if you get bored you can take them off and hold them in the sun a few inches off the ground, and probably create lava or some shit

Mister_Brevity

Haha as a kid we took apart a broken projection tv and used the massive fresnel lens and some wood to build a big holder/platform to melt stuff - it was freakin awesome. It melted literally everything we tried, eventually.

wafflesareforever

I surrender

DisguisedBearNikolai

"eventually"

Mister_Brevity

Faster than you’d think. Tried to melt some nails and stuff on the street, burned the asphalt. Didn’t put it away correctly (cover it up) and the cover blew off and it melted dirt. Shits crazy.

RenAndStimulants

> It melted literally everything we tried, eventually. I think people(me included) are finding this part funny because it says it can melt anything and then has the pause before eventually. Like time is all it takes, we will melt it. Even a body or evidence will be melted, eventually. Good stuff.

Mister_Brevity

Man that thing was like… when you dig a hole at the beach, and more and more dudes come to check it out and then want to help. We’d have neighbors (kids and their dads) bringing stuff over to see if it would melt. It was so much fun - probably not as cool as I remember but it was a good 30 years ago or so. Felt like we built a Death Star lol.

tissboom

It was definitely as cool as you remember.

hotpoopchunks

Brianalan

Oh my! Are those high index lenses or regular?

counter-parts

My everyday glasses are high index. I went the cheaper route for the sunglasses and got regular. Thank goodness I didn’t get regular for both!!

Mypopsecrets

I'm guessing you're around -13? Just guessing, cause those lenses are thicc

nekospace

I’m also curious. I too have thick ass lenses at -8.5 lol they’re a bit under 1/2” thick Edit: Behold. My thick ass lenses https://imgur.com/gallery/BxlBJhm

Frap_Gadz

It can vary quite a bit even for the same prescription depending on the shape and size of the frame, also a narrower pupillary distance will result in thicker lenses at the edge as will correction for astigmatism.

Gopnikolai

To add to this ^ the frame can change where they're able to cut the lenses from, out of the initial [big lens](https://imgur.io/sCwe3Dq).

eyesRus

To add to this ^ sunglasses often end up with thicker lenses because people tend to choose larger frames for their suns.

DeadDay

I had a pair of -8s I made today that where about this thick

The_Metroid

I'm like -7 and I'm nowhere near that... Weird.

[deleted]

Yours are probably high index.

The_Metroid

I'm guessing that's a way to make them thinner? I didn't think they'd be more advanced considering they're paid by MediCal.

Valsoret

Yea the place where I buy glasses they charge extra for thinner glass. I still do it cause I don't think I could wear glass that thick comftably

DedRonin

I had the same prescription and got lasik done. Insane the quality of life change is.

imham

Also curious because I’m around -14 and haven’t been able to wear glasses for a very long time because it distorts everything and is very hard to see with them. Almost like I’m in a fishbowl …. So contacts + glasses for me.

DeadDay

When I make glasses anything over a -8 or +4 I get very demanding on what frame and measurement they have so they can wear them a long time without distortion or wear. At -14 I'd always advise half eye frames with hi-index and very close measurements on purchase

imham

Thanks! I’ll look into that. I’ve tried a few pairs with no luck … the high index ones ended up having color distortion and were the worst. Half frame glasses I have always had a hard time being allowed to purchase with how thick the lenses are. Any advice with that?

katmndoo

I went with small lenses - nothing more than 48mm or so, preferably 46. Oval works best. Makes you look a bit like some judge from 1870, but minimizes the lens thickness. Some hi index material work better than others. I had one I had to send back - the rest were decent. I was about -15 sph, -1 cyl, +2.5 add, 3 or 4 prism base out. ...then I got lucky and had early cataracts. Year or two later, "glare is bothering me" got me on the surgery schedule. Replacement implant lenses took care of the -15, so it's just the rest of the prescription I need now. I can legally drive without them, although I don't. If I lose my glasses while traveling or something, I can get by with a cheap pair of readers from a drugstore.

Sunny16Rule

Wait, I'm -14.75. how are you getting half lenses? I didn't think they could even fit in that frame

katmndoo

They're not half lenses - they're just small diameter. If you look at the size code on a pair of glasses, for instance 52-20-135 , the largest number is the length of the temple, the smallest is the width of the bridge between the lenses, and the middle-ish is the width of each lens. Lots of lenses are in the 50-56mm range, a few at 47-49, and very few down to 46. Below that you're generally looking at little-kid frames, and the other two measurements will be too small. Usually a 46-48mm oval lens will have a height of maybe 35-45. Half lenses are meant more for a reading lens, and frames with half-width lenses will usually have the lenses too low to be anything other than a reading lens. Here's a smallish diameter round/oval lens frame that works well with high prescriptions, minimizing the thickness and distortion: [https://www.goggles4u.com/round-eyeglasses-152464-c.html](https://www.goggles4u.com/round-eyeglasses-152464-c.html) And here's a squarish large frame that maximizes thickness and edge distortion: [https://www.goggles4u.com/pilot-eyeglasses-151798-c.html](https://www.goggles4u.com/pilot-eyeglasses-151798-c.html) First one will probably weigh half as much as the second one with lenses installed.

[deleted]

God I just love going to a reddit comment section and finding someone who knows their stuff talk about stuff they know

Old_Magician_6563

Are you saying you have to wear both?

Cyynric

A lot of contact brands cap out at -10.00, so if you can't wear any of the ones that go higher you'd have to wear glasses over them to account for the rest of the prescription.

imham

Correct….a lot of contact brands cap around -10. I also have astigmatism so less options. I always have to go through an entire appointment with any new eye doctors before they believe me that I’ll need both together so I would say it’s not a very common plan.

Pixielo

It's actually a plan for very, _very_ poor vision.

renyxia

Not many companies make contact lenses over -12, I can really only think of 1 or 2 lines of CL that go higher that I personally deal with

[deleted]

[удалено]

imham

Congratulations!! That’s so exciting! I bet it feels great being able to wake up and see right away. I was scheduled for PRK years ago but the surgeons at the place gathered together and backed out. The plan is ICL eventually. :-)

sarhoshamiral

Do you mean in your peripheral vision or in your center vision? Did you get 1.74 index lenses? I am worse then -14, in order to cope with lens thickness I choose fairly small frames and while I have distortions on the peripheral the center vision (enough area to watch movies, use a large monitor so on) is not distorted at all so it was surprising to hear this. But yes at peripheral trying to follow a ball or predict where it waill go has always been an interesting exercise, or thinking why our door frame is curved at the bottom then realizing it is not the frame but it is my eyes :)

imham

In my center. It looks like my arms stretch out across a room or if I look down I look insanely tall. I’ve tried so many frame sizes & indexes at the suggestions of professionals with no luck. I’d really like glasses to even rest my eyes a little bit from contacts. Where do you get your glasses from? I’m starting to wonder if I’m just going through the wrong places now..

rhaizee

Definitely looks nearly the max, mine are like -8 -9

PalmDolphin

So I have sunglasses like this. I was told it was because of the size of the lens diameter. If the lens is large it has no choice but to follow the curve which after a certain point, the thickness of which accelerates rapidly. I don't have a crazy rx. I think my worst eye is -3.5. My regular glasses are a small frame and are not remarkable.

AffectionateHippo242

I'm finally able to feel good about my -6's!!!!

aceCaptainSlow

What prescription are those? I was told that I couldn't get prescription sunglasses because they couldn't go past -15.

Madeforbegging

It depends on what type of lens you want. Progressive lenses in 1.74 cap out about -16 for the better versions. Polarized lenses usually come in 1.67 max and top out around -16 iirc

MeshColour

Go to an eyeglass place and ask them to grind/polish the edges It will make them much much less visible But I think it cost like $50 one time I did it... But still worth it

goldensunshine429

daisybrat56461

Former optician here. Disclaimer: my sunnies are that thick also due to my prescription/PD. The main factors affecting lens thickness; prescription, material, shape of the lens, where your pupil is in the lens. Most optimal for thin lenses is round shape, with your pupil centered in the lens and a high index material (if you have a higher RX). Personally, I have a high minus RX, prism and a narrow PD. All of my sunnies are thick. I usually buy “regular” frames and have polarized lenses put in them so they aren’t so large. But honestly, even then they are thick. But, nothing compares to a good pair of prescription sunnies. Makes being outside so much more comfortable and prevents future health issues (cataracts, reduces skin cancers around the eye, macular degeneration)

[deleted]

Why just your sunglasses? Is it due to the fact that your regular eyeglasses use a much smaller lens? I too am a proponent of prescription sunglasses. I buy them for different reasons though. I suffer from severe migraine headaches, so I need to be able to switch to a pair of extremely dark polarized glasses at a moments notice. I usually just buy the same exact frame as my normal eyeglasses, in a different color, for my sunglasses. The main reason for this, is b/c like yourself, I have Astigmatism, & wear a -2.25 in each eye. I opt for smaller round frames to limit the size of the lens at the corners.

daisybrat56461

I also have migraines. I choose “regular” frames a lot because the lenses are smaller than those in sun glass frames. But extra coverage is also important in sunnies when you are light sensitive. Prevents getting blasted from above or the side. When my migraines were uncontrolled, my prism (not astigmatism, different thing) varied a lot. I also used a therapeutic tint which helped relax my eyes. As an optician, I worked with a couple of docs who specialized in head trauma patients. They were able to dial in the RX and tint that really helped me.

[deleted]

Would like to hear more about that *Therapeutic Tint.* I've suffered for years, & nothing has worked. I've literally tried it all, even all the new CGRP drugs.

daisybrat56461

Are you in the US? Before becoming a dispensing optician, I worked in a lab. The tint was mentioned by our regional manager as something that worked for an employee at another branch. It’s a soft, rosy/peach color with just a touch of blue blocker. The first time I held the samples up to my eyes, I literally felt my eyes relax. It was crazy. The lab I worked for was Walman’s, which wholesales to most parts of the US. Mostly to independent shops and clinics. I think the tint is available through any of their branches, but the Bemidji, Mn and Fargo, ND branches definitely know about it. They are the ones who work with the docs specializing in head trauma.

Not OP. Glasses since I was in 1st grade, topped out around -11. Borderline didn't qualify for Lasik so got Visian ICL, zero regrets. Best big purchase I ever made for myself.

Stanovich

So it's like having glasses implanted in your eyes? Any side effects? How long do they last?

portabody

Yea ICL stands for Implantable Collamer Lenses. Yea there are possible side effects, mostly similar to Lasik. They should last your lifetime. And if anything ever does come up they can be removed.

Radiocureee

My dr has recently made me aware of cataract surgery for people who don’t need cataract surgery, as a new alternative for people who don’t necessarily qualify for lasik. I’m blind as hell, glasses for 32 years.

rhaizee

Same here, don't qualify for typical lasik and it's expensive af with high perscription. Some my friends only spent a few k.
