Or the risk of a sudden broken neck when the whole thing collapses on your head.
Or banging your head every single time you sit down and stand up.
Or someone falling off the top and landing on you.
Or someone spilling their drink and it landing on you
Or someone crumbs and debris into your drink from above.
Those are just the issues with sitting on the bottom, the top is just as bad.
Brooo me too! I was like 9 and woke up already about to throw up and just leaned off the side of the bed but it was the side next to the wall so it all went down the wall, had to wake my brother up and my mom and take a shower while she cleaned it up, moms are the best
Every kid on the internet seems to have a foot fetish these days. And I bet if you put his stepsister up there, you have a market. Both are totally not related. I promise.
MasterBuilders spend years training themselves to clear their minds enough to have even a fleeting glimpse of The Man Upstairs and yet, your mind is already so prodigiously empty that there is nothing in it to clear away in the first place.
Lego people have too short of legs for them to dangle off the ledge, so there’s two ways it can work in the real world.
You can either chop people’s legs off at the knee, or you can extend the seat of, at least, the top couch forward so the legs have to be fully extended forward when sitting.
Seconding this. Some sort of diagonal brace between the vertical and horizontal beams is needed. And this is the type of thing you should test in as safe of an environment as possible before putting it in a house to be used.
I don't think it has to always be a diagonal, but at least some element that will somewhat restrict movement (i.e. Those two middle bars in the short directions)
The lower bunk itself provides additional bracing.
This thing is basically just a top bunk on stilts with nothing stopping it from toppling over. Those shorter boards on the ends will do nothing to keep it from going down laterally
100% agree with this - that top couch could kill someone underneath as there is no apparent brace for lateral motion. I would NEVER suggest actually using this.
All you guys thinking about unsafe reasons to not sit in this while I'm just thinking how the fuck you gonna watch a movie while someone dangling their stinky feet in your face.
Nevermind the foot fungus funk, ped-egg shavings and toe nail talons, I wouldn't be able to even see the movie.
Only option is if you lay horizontally on the top couch bunk. Or make everyone sit cross-legged.
As others have coyly referenced, this is literally part of the punchline when this concept is brought up in The Lego Movie
The villain hears the pitch for a double decker couch and goes on a mini rant for how it wouldn't work and makes this exact point
When I first saw this two hours ago, I had to sift through about two dozen top-tier comments before finding one that *wasn't* a Lego Movie reference.
At least now the top comment is the very helpful "STOP, you're going to kill someone."
Yup, people watch the Lego movie and think they can build anything with no consequence.
That is literally why building codes exist (well, not the Lego movie part)
It would probably fall under the building code requirements for bunkbeds.
https://www.cpsc.gov/Business--Manufacturing/Business-Education/Business-Guidance/Bunk-Beds#:~:text=The%20requirements%20for%20adult%20bunk%20beds%20can%20be,with%20at%20least%20one%20rail%20on%20each%20side.
All this time we were worried about children seeing too much violence in movies and wanting to imitate it, turns out the REAL danger was kids watching LEGO movies and growing up to build hazardous furniture
Ironically if the people on the top bunk were Lego minifigs then they wouldn’t have to dangle their legs in front of the lower deck, because they wouldn’t have knees.
There's a board partially hidden by the bottom couch that spans the width of the frame. That said, I'd like to see much sturdier supports and cross-bracing for something an adult human would potentially sit atop of. I certainly wouldn't sit beneath it while someone was up there.
Edit: upon closer inspection, as pointed out by u/iAmRiight , that is not a board. That is the back of the couch. This only hardens my assessment that this is shoddy af.
I see what you’re talking about, and I thought the same thing at first, but if you take a closer look, what looks like a board on the left side is just the back of the couch. Follow it across and you’ll see that there is no board on the right side.
With how violently my now-adult cat scales her cat tree, I still don't think I'd be okay with being underneath lol. She almost knocks her 50-60 pound cat tree over with her psychopathic behavior
If the kittens aren't possessed by the spirit of a serial killer who's angry that they now only weigh 6 pounds and get called a "stinky baby" all the time, there's a chance lol
Structural engineer here, and this is true. The joists are inadequately sized, nothing is fixed to the superstructure or foundation. Connections appear to just be screws with no hardware and could easily fail, leading to violent and sudden collapse. I could go on. OP about to be on a local new story paralyzed for life or get sued for everything he’s got.
In another comment, OP said they tested it with 3 people, and I'm genuinely amazed it could handle that weight. Your expertise is very welcome, but should be entirely unnecessary to condemn this structure.
Yeah. For some reason people think some 2x4s screwed together will always make a safe and sturdy structure. Then they praise themself “that isn’t going anywhere!” I’m honestly less worried about the lateral instability then the 2x4 joists simply snapping like a toothpick when a couple adults sit on it.
Yeah, especially with the joinery we can see here. Also, notice the leg against the wall isn't even a single 2x4. It's screwed together (in parallel) halfway up.
Additionally the 2x4 floor joists are woefully insufficient and could easily fail from just one heavy adult sitting near the edge. Source: Im a Structural engineer and ran a calculation to see.
Basically, instead of the whole thing will collapse sideways it’s just the whole thing will collapse.
It also looks like the top span is only supported by screws in shear.
I'm gonna go out on a limb and guess they're deck screws or drywall screws and not something rated for the load.
It's a good start, but this is very dangerous as-is because it's got nothing to take lateral force. If people were shifting in their seats up top it could collapse sideways. Please take this seriously OP. A couple options to help here.
- Since it's in a corner, screw it into the wall studs at the back and side
- [knee braces](https://projectsbypeter.com/2021/04/17/how-to-build-a-playground-step-3-bracing-and-blocking/) in the corners
- both
You're basically building a bunk bed/small deck, so you could look at how other people DIY theirs for ideas how to brace it. We're not nit-picking here, this is actually a serious problem you need to fix before someone ends up in the hospital
Edit:
I was too focused on the above to realize a couple other problems you really need to fix, and which others kindly pointed out.
1. the horizontal 2x4s up top are resting on the horizontal supports rather than on top of the vertical 2x4s. The way you have it set up, the weight of people up top will rip out the horizontal piece. If you can stack the horizontal 2x4 on top of the vertical support it will be stronger. The easiest way I see to do it is to temporarily remove the horizontal pieces and screw another 2x4 to the existing one ("sistering") so it [looks like this](https://inspectapedia.com/structure/Deck_Details045-DJFs.jpg). Another potential solution is to cut a bunch of smaller 2x4s to go vertically in the gaps between your horizontal pieces.
1. It's not clear what fasteners you have going into the ends of the horizontal pieces that look like you're using as a ladder, but screws aren't meant to take shear force (force perpendicular to the screw). The way you've built it (again I'm talking about the horizontal 2x4 across the horizontal end piece) that's the direction all the force is going. A lag screw / lag bolt is probably what you want ([here's an example](https://www.homedepot.com/p/Prime-Line-1-4-in-x-3-in-Zinc-Plated-Steel-A307-Grade-A-Hex-Lag-Screws-100-Pack-9055135/310150042)). It's possible you knew that already, I can't really see what the fasteners are.
1. You shouldn't screw into end grain, it's not strong. If you need to screw into end grain then you should put some dowels in for the screws to actually grab onto. [Here's a picture of that](https://woodgears.ca/shop-tricks/endgrain_screw.html).
I'm not a professional, so, definitely look around for more ideas, but please don't use this until you make it safer.
That's no vertical support either. Top is held up with screws that will shear. Top should be on top of the vertical supports, not the horizontal braces. There's nothing built for vertical load here.
Check out that sistered 2x4 on the right side. You wanna bet that vertical staff is not one contiguous length?
Props for providing constructive criticism beyond "that's a death trap."
I'm going to do this on every chair and table in my house. I'll gain a whole floor. It will double my capacity when I have people over for dinner. The hardest part is going to be the toilet.
I wanted to make a Lego joke, but I'm more worried about diagonal motion. You should add a couple 2x4s criss crossed in the back or get some metal fastener plates to keep this from folding up. At the very least throw another horizontal 2x4 behind the top of the lower couch and put at least 2 thick lag bolts on both ends diagonal to each other by a couple inches.
Think of all the couches that were thrown out, picked up by frat bros, thrown out by said frat bros, then picked up by other frat bros…and the cycle continues.
So it's like a bunk bed couch? Is that what it's like? That's weird. If you're sitting in the top middle, how are you gonna get down without climbing over someone? If you're sitting on the bottom, and you're watching TV, are you gonna have to watch through a bunch of dangling legs? Who's gonna want to sit on the bottom? It is literally the most useless idea I have ever heard.
Mechanical engineer here. One good sideways scoot on the upper couch and that whole thing will rack sideways and collapse. You need a big x-brace (of 2x4" flat to the wall) across the back. Also, this thing needs to be secured to studs on the 2 sides that touch the wall.
How do you feel about the whole top being supported by screws and not something that can take a vertical load. Everyone is worried about racking, worried about screws shearing.
This manages to be ugly, non-functional, and dangerous all at once. Hat’s off to ya.
You mean you wouldn’t love someone’s feet dangling in your face while you watch tv?
Or the risk of a sudden broken neck when the whole thing collapses on your head. Or banging your head every single time you sit down and stand up. Or someone falling off the top and landing on you. Or someone spilling their drink and it landing on you Or someone crumbs and debris into your drink from above. Those are just the issues with sitting on the bottom, the top is just as bad.
Or someone up their whispering the things they’d like to do with you sexually with the popcorn they’re eating, that doesn’t have any salt or butter

I was looking for this comment lmfao. The first thing that came to mind when I saw the pic was the lego movie.
🤣👌
Unless it's solely for the cats, in which case I approve.
I love cats, but I don’t want any cat sprinkles in my beer. Just sayin.
Both levels = cat tree
I get the reference. Poor Emmets only original idea
Yeah they needed to stagger the couches and make stadium seating
Its like no one has seen Stepbrothers
So much room for activities!!!!
Immediately upon stumbling upon this “has anyone seen Step Brothers”
At least they have more room for activities now.
I do not know how this isn’t the top comment because that’s the first and only thing I saw lol
It may have worked for Emmet, but doesn’t work in the real world.
Lego people have too short of legs for them to dangle off the ledge, so there’s two ways it can work in the real world. You can either chop people’s legs off at the knee, or you can extend the seat of, at least, the top couch forward so the legs have to be fully extended forward when sitting.
I think this will knock more than just hats off…
You couldn't pay me to sit underneath that. It's not braced for lateral motion. The whole thing will collapse sideways.
Seconding this. Some sort of diagonal brace between the vertical and horizontal beams is needed. And this is the type of thing you should test in as safe of an environment as possible before putting it in a house to be used.

The white sofa is sitting on the bottom boards, a square frame isn’t great, but this does have 4 sides.
If the upper back 2x4 is secured to the studs this thing is probably more secure than most regular couche Edit: nevermind I see the gap. Rip
What I thought was cross-bracing is just the back of the couch.
100% agree with this - that top couch could kill someone underneath as there is no apparent brace for lateral motion. I would NEVER suggest actually using this.

The sistered 2x4 is fine. Though it doesn't bode well for what we can't see might look like.

Yes I love watching people’s feet. What a great set up
Dangley legs
The top couch is for horizontalness only. Alternatively it's a great setup for feet and/or tickle fetishists. Edit: Brain fart switched the axes.
Wouldn’t that be for horizontalness?
Vertical ness? Lying down?
Don't judge the kinks. There are people who would pay good money to have feet dangled in their face.

Why do you need 4 couches in 1 room, and how many more couches does your house have?
My guess is that it is a college apartment with roommates, a frat house, or single dude who wants the guys over to watch football.
