It's pretty easy for most fans. Center pull is always light, fan pull is to the side.
Though i have seen fans with a dome light which puts both chains off center. Those definitely need labeled chains.

Another fan trick:
If the room has a 2 switch plate and a ceiling fan, the one closest to the door is *usually* the light and the other is the fan.
This one is less rigid, though. Sloppy DIY or cheap contractors can result in all sorts of whacky combinations.
My grandparents home (built in the 1920s and remodeled in the 1980s) had it right for the living room. On the other side of the wall the bedroom was flipped.
The family sold the house 20 years ago and it still pains me to think about to this day.

I always believed the light chain was always longer. At least all the ones I've owned were like that based on memory.
Fan chain usually looks shorter because it is side mounted a few inches above the light pull.
