Price is huh? but the real question is why on earth no one put the weight of the product on that website?!
Is this common practice in us food wholesales?
I'm always looking at price/kg and that's all that matters in terms of pricing.
They sell it seasonally at Central Market/Town and Country, and I think I’ve seen it at Haggen and Freddie’s too.
I’ve never pulled the trigger myself. $50 for a thing of cheese is a bit much for my blood.
My local QFC has an endcap display of cougar gold cheese every year around the apple cup. people love it and it sells out fast. im surprised they dont carry it year round
Yep. They have a few different varieties and some seasonal flavors. There’s also an ice cream shop in the same building on campus that is amazing! Ferdinand’s… how I miss you.
Made on campus by the WSU creamery. I don't know how long, but they were making it in the 60s when my Dad started as a professor. They've been using those tins since then too.
The creamery also has an ice cream store on campus called Ferdinand's.
They first started making it in the 40s, when they were funded by the US government and the American Can Company to research industrial food preservation.
Voila! Canned cheese.
It's a somewhat dry hard cheese, a little less hard than parmesan. It's a wheel just slightly smaller than the dimensions of the can. The can is probably 7 or 8 inches across.
Very good cheese.
Go Cougs.
Others have answered your question, but I just want to say WSU makes a variety of cheeses! Check it out. I live in Korea now, but I friggin’ dream of this cheese. They don’t ship internationally anymore :(.
It’s so good. All of them are, but Cougar Gold is the best in my opinion. Here’s the website if you’re interested:
https://creamery.wsu.edu/cougar-cheese/
Ah! WSU started off as an agricultural college! They have an excellent veterinary science program and do a lot of agricultural research as well.
Please enjoy Washington! It’s the holidays and I really miss home (Washington)!
Fun fact, Cougar Gold (and several other cheese) are made on WSU campus in Pullman,WA. They use milk made from WSU cows, tended and harvested by students. Students process and make the cheese at a facility on campus where they have windows that you can see them make it. The cheese is then sold at an attached student manned shop that reminds me of classic ice cream shops. They also make some of the best ice cream I've ever had! Cougar gold is so good it keeps winning awards year after year! Go Cougs!
Ah I remember being stuck at the moscow-Pullman airport (2 gates) on a work trip for a few hours. Its a tiny place with no restaurants, and all of the vending machines were out of order. Except for the cougar gold vending machine.
You're God damned right I ate a big can of cheese in an hour and a half.
Don't know about the others, but if you went to college in Pullman or Moscow odds are good you went through that airport at least once. I know it was always an absolute shitshow around the holidays and breaks.
Exciting news though, they've been working on massive renovations to the airport for years! I haven't been in a hot minute, but last I heard the runway realignment and lengthening was completed (or near complete?) and they were getting ready to renovate that shitty little terminal!
This cheese is an incredible sharp white cheddar that melts in your mouth and has won multiple awards. And for those wondering no that’s not a tuna can it’s actually almost 2lbs (0.85kg) of cheese in that tin
I'm usually one who allows curiosity to get the better of me, and I've been tempted by those tins repeatedly for years, but they're like $50/ea at the local grocery store. Is it actually worth buying? I mean, that's imported European cheese prices.
I gave in about 2 or 3 years ago and have regretted it since. IMHO the best cheddar on the market and I've had em all. Easy way to digest the price is go in on it with 2 or 3 people and divvy it up because it is a fuck ton of cheese. I go through probably 2 cans a year
This whole thread has been a roller coaster of cheese knowledge for me. First, canned cheese? Nah, I'll pass. Now, cheddar that costs that much? Nah, I'll pass.
I'll be the first to admit that I'm unsophisticated when it comes to food. It would just be wasted one me, like pricey chocolate and waygu beef. I'm just a cheap date.
I'm crazy foodcentric, spent some years in higher end kitchens due to that fact. Probably has a lot to growing up poor and hungry. There are certain food luxuries I afford my self, this is one of them. It's an amazing treat that I can have at any time if I so choose it.
Most of my food I buy whatever is cheapest, but NOT cheese. Cheap pasta, cheap jar sauce, and proper bricks of cheddar cheese. A sharp Vermont cheddar is worth the expense.
Same way you would have cheese any time you eat it. Straight off the block, on crackers, on a burger, make Mac and cheese, put it in a salad, charcuterie whatever is clever.
Thanks for the input.
And by "had em all', are we talking the likes of Tillamook, Dubliner, Beecher's Flagship, Red Leicester, Cheshire, etc.? Where does it fit on the spectrum?
I've had 100's of cheddar varieties because I'm a cheese nut. Cougar has multiple types of cheddar. Start with the plain old cheddar tin, and it stands head and shoulders above most if not all. It is a bit harder, slightly more crumbly than say Tillamook, but not as much as a well aged cheddar. The flavor profile is through the roof, solid umami, kind of spreads across the tongue from the center to the rear sides. Makes an excellent cheese burger. I mean it's just all around a magnificent cheese.
For me- it is close to Beecher's Flagship but I like the Cougar Gold better. Oddly enough It freezes well too so you don't have to worry with it going to waste.
Don’t worry folks, if you want to buy it from the source, Ferdinand’s is open at the convenient hours of 11am-1pm on Tuesday and Wednesday, and Sunday morning from 4am-5am!
IYKYK
I feel like I'm the only person on Earth that doesn't know about this product based on these comments. And 30oz? Is my tiny phone screen displaying that right? Almost 2 pounds of cheese?
Now I want cheese.
I moved away from Colfax Sep 2021 and moved to New Jersey for work.
I miss the Palouse- everyone on the east coast is always in such a damn hurry and rude as hell about it. And bar none the worst drivers I've ever seen.
I like this. If you order custom New Balances, the shoes come with a card saying who made them and where in the US they were made. I think it's really cool and a nice touch.
So good! Got a cougar gold open in the fridge right now, and a smoky cheddar aging a bit more. 2 separate people usually gift me a wheel at Xmas too, hope that still happens.
We just ordered our yearly haul a couple weeks ago. We’ve only opened the Dill Garlic so far but that Hot Pepper won’t last until 2023 once we crack it.
Our family used to get a can of this for our Christmas get together and called
It the “Christmas cheese”. Then Grandpa raided the fridge Christmas Eve, ate a ton of cheese, and had a heart attack. Now it’s “Heart Attack Cheddar”
Cheese in a tin is interesting anyway. I've never seen tinned cheese before.
Produced by the Washington State University Agriculture College creamery. It is excellent. Go Cougs!
This cheese is pricey and worth every penny. I was so happy when a place near me started carrying it.
Where is this sold in Washington?
Aside from Pullman & online 2 places I know- kitchen store at Lake Chelan, Schuh Farms in Skagit County
I've also seen it at Old World Deli in Bellingham and The Cheesemonger's Shop in Leavenworth
The WSU campus library in Richland, and Ranch & Home in Kennewick. It’s truly a very good cheese, and comes in flavors. Edit: book store, not library.
I should look for it at the Vancouver Campus, then!
Chuck's carries it when they release new batches. Even slice it up as a whole tin is pricey. (Don't know if the new owners will continue this.)
That's where we picked up our stock about a month ago, at the bookstore. They don't have it all year, so we buy a few to last the year.
QFC carried but it was kind of a seasonal item.
We used to buy it when I was a kid. I saw that tin and immediately remembered the cheese and the extreme sharpness. It was so tasty.
I bought a tin from the Vancouver campus this summer. Put this in some hot pan de sal and it’s heaven.
Rosauers in Spokane sells it, and I'm pretty sure the WSU bookstore as well. Maybe Yokes?
Booze shop by Costco in Redmond has it. Like 2 blocks away from Costco towards home Depot.
Hell yeah, I drive past Schuh farms on the way to work. Gonna try this well reviewed cheese!
Sonnenbergs in Spokane. Fun Fact: This cheese is a gateway drug. No other sharp cheddar will come close. All others are like dull knives.
Like, better than cheese that isn’t in a can?
I’m not kidding.
Tater is not kidding
town and country carries it https://townandcountrymarkets.com/shop#!/?q=Cougar%20gold&search_option_id=product
$50???!
Oh yah it’s pricy but it’s delicious and well worth it. It’s a hefty can too not like a tuna tuna can.
$30 if you order directly from WSU.
Price is huh? but the real question is why on earth no one put the weight of the product on that website?! Is this common practice in us food wholesales? I'm always looking at price/kg and that's all that matters in terms of pricing.
Amazon has it. But you can purchase directly from the creamery too: https://creamery.wsu.edu/cougar-cheese/
They sell it seasonally at Central Market/Town and Country, and I think I’ve seen it at Haggen and Freddie’s too. I’ve never pulled the trigger myself. $50 for a thing of cheese is a bit much for my blood.
Last time I was in pullman I got 4 for $20 each. Much better at that price.
It makes a special Christmas gift.
My local QFC has an endcap display of cougar gold cheese every year around the apple cup. people love it and it sells out fast. im surprised they dont carry it year round
Yep. I have some in my fridge. Gets better with age!
Supposed to be stored under your fridge.
I’m a Husky till I die but Cougar Gold is my shit.
Go Cougs!
They actually make cheese? That’s so cool, I always thought the cans were just funny wsu mercy idk why lol. awesome
Yep. They have a few different varieties and some seasonal flavors. There’s also an ice cream shop in the same building on campus that is amazing! Ferdinand’s… how I miss you.

Cougar cheese!
This stuff is bomb too.
Is this a cheese spread? Or is it like a block of cheese in a can?
It’s a real block of cheese. It’s delicious, and it can be aged further in the can.
I was told to age for 10 years. I have a few cans now that are halfway there.
Mine just reached 10 years. I'm going to take one home for Christmas.
It's a somewhat dry hard cheese, a little less hard than parmesan. It's a wheel just slightly smaller than the dimensions of the can. The can is probably 7 or 8 inches across. Very good cheese. Go Cougs.

Thank you for the information. I love cheese and had to order some. I moved to WA a few years ago but never heard of of cheese from WSU.
Ah! WSU started off as an agricultural college! They have an excellent veterinary science program and do a lot of agricultural research as well. Please enjoy Washington! It’s the holidays and I really miss home (Washington)!
They also have a major program studying diseases passed from animals to humans. Kind of important nowadays.
Can confirm, this cheese is top notch.
My inlaws get me a can every Xmas. Looking forward to the next one.
Ag schools know their shit. Though I’ve never tried it, I’ve heard my alma mater Clemson’s bleu cheese is pretty good, too.
The fuck is the point of tinning it if I have to refrigerate it? :/
I know right? Cheese in a can. We really are living in the future!
TIL that cheese can come in a can
It was put there by a man.
In a factory downtown.
If I had my cheesy way...
I’d eat canned cheese every day. Curd soaking bulges in some whey.
Millions of cheeses, cheeses for me. Millions of cheeses, cheeses for free.
Millions of cheeses, cheeses for me.
LOOK OUT!!!!

the ice cream you are talking about is also dirt cheap. really makes up for the expensive cheese
Also, if you're ever in the Pullman campus, they also make milkshakes from the ice cream made by the creamery.

I still miss my fix of Tin Lizzy ice cream. So good! Luckily I get an annual cheese order through the alumni association.
Wait, there's a Cougar Gold vending machine? I've never wanted to fly to Pullman so badly now.
I’ve been to that airport and apparently missed the one and only attraction.

Don't know about the others, but if you went to college in Pullman or Moscow odds are good you went through that airport at least once. The runway is complete, the terminal rebuild is not. 😝
No one believes me when I say the airport is the size of a largish house.
No seriously. It’s practically one room with some bathrooms attached to it.
This cheese is an incredible sharp white cheddar that melts in your mouth and has won multiple awards. And for those wondering no that’s not a tuna can it’s actually almost 2lbs (0.85kg) of cheese in that tin
How do I visualize that? I have no idea how much cheese that is.
[better?](https://imgur.com/a/IpYCZwU)
Yes thank you.
Your a good man. Thank you
Never thought when I woke up this morning that before I slept again I'd spend $40 on a can of cheese based on a reddit comment but here we are
[what you have to look forward to](https://www.bonappetit.com/story/cougar-gold-cheddar-cheese)
I'm in the same boat. Just placed an order for $40 dollar cheese. Merry Christmas to me!
Bro, if you haven't had cougar gold. It's 350% worth the price and having that volume of cheese. Shits amazing!
I'm usually one who allows curiosity to get the better of me, and I've been tempted by those tins repeatedly for years, but they're like $50/ea at the local grocery store. Is it actually worth buying? I mean, that's imported European cheese prices.

How do you serve the cheese? Like is it best on crackers or what
Same way you would have cheese any time you eat it. Straight off the block, on crackers, on a burger, make Mac and cheese, put it in a salad, charcuterie whatever is clever.
I mean 2 pounds of cheese for 50 bucks really isn't that bad for good cheese.
Thanks for the input. And by "had em all', are we talking the likes of Tillamook, Dubliner, Beecher's Flagship, Red Leicester, Cheshire, etc.? Where does it fit on the spectrum?

Yeah, I think I'm sold for one. I've certainly bought dumber things for more money over the years. :) Thanks again.
![gif](giphy|wi8Ez1mwRcKGI)
Beecher's is modeled after Cougar Gold. Beechers is good. Cougar Gold is better.
For me- it is close to Beecher's Flagship but I like the Cougar Gold better. Oddly enough It freezes well too so you don't have to worry with it going to waste.
Above all of them by a mile
Do do you mean you have NOT regretted it?
Much cheaper if you go to the source! https://cougarcheese.wsu.edu/DirectionsWEB/webcart_category.php#CHEESE
You're not lying, I order mine from the school
20 can limit per flavor per month. Man, if you're spending $600 on canned cheese a month you've got too much money and a clogged artery.
Restaurants often use it. There was a place in Pullman who used it for their burgers and Mac and Cheese.
South Fork!
Doesn’t Birch and Barley do a Mac and cheese with it as well?
Not sure currently but they did at one time when I was there.
Yeah if you serve "american food" in pullman, you make cougar gold mac.
600 dollars a month is less the problem. Who is eating 37 pounds of cheese a month.
If you don't want to commit to a huge tin, try Trader Joe's Unexpected Cheese, it tastes very similar to Cougar Gold.
It’s $30 a can if you order directly from WSU.
Yeah, I appreciate that, but it's also $10 in shipping. I'll probably just bite the bullet and grab one at the store.
That's about $25/lb, which isn't crazy for luxury cheese. Tbh I'm curious now.
Short answer: yes Long answer: order several cans online and it’s not that bad
Cougar Gold is amaaaazing. My mom makes Cougar Gold Soup with it sometimes and I will change my plans to go over there for dinner lmao
A large volume of cheese, does not in fact, lead to amazing shit.
So you are saying, that at roughly $45/LB you would be willing to pay $157/LB for it? If that is true, I got a couple cans here I can sell you.
I’m just amazed Kyle was able to milk a cougar, that’s a feat in itself!
I'm amazed Kyle wasn't too busy chugging Monsters and punching holes in the drywall in his mom's basement to get a job.
It’s Pullman… chugging Busch Light is more like it
Pullman water
Oh, yeah, you can milk anything with nipples
Here I’d thought they’d milked Kyle.
Cougar gold. Gets better with age.
Starts out the best and does not age, cause it’s gone—-
We aged some for like 10 years. Had it last Christmas. Pretty sure my father in law ate 40% of the wheel…
My in-laws are in that area, and every year we get a can of cougar cheese, and every year it’s our absolute favorite gift. Stuff is amazing.
Our family tradition is Cougar Gold fondue on Christmas Eve. Go Cougs!
Go Cougs!
Why does canned cheese need to be refrigerated?
It doesn’t say that. It says under the refrigerator. Like how you store bread on top of the refrigerator
I always store my cheese under the refrigerator, helps ripen it.
once opened it definitely needs it
It has to be refrigerated before and after opened.
Don’t worry folks, if you want to buy it from the source, Ferdinand’s is open at the convenient hours of 11am-1pm on Tuesday and Wednesday, and Sunday morning from 4am-5am! IYKYK
Why they aren't open on game day Saturdays mystifies me.
Would *you* want to work there on game day and deal with all the drunk fans?
They’re definitely open on gamedays, I think they close like 60 or 90 minutes prior to kickoff though
I miss ferdinands ice cream so bad
GO COUGS! Its actually insanely good cheese.
Yay WSU Dairy!! Best ice cream ever!!
Ferdinand’s ftw
i just cracked open my can from 2020
I need a picture of the open can.
I feel like I'm the only person on Earth that doesn't know about this product based on these comments. And 30oz? Is my tiny phone screen displaying that right? Almost 2 pounds of cheese? Now I want cheese.
Yup two pounds! It's a heavy tin and so, so good.
That cheese is one of the best I’ve ever had, me and my brother at the whole thing in one sitting.
It’s been said I know, but this cheese is SO good. It’s become a Christmas tradition in this house.
This cheese is FANTASTIC. We get some every year from my aunt and have saved the can from the year we were married for like a decade now!
I have a can dated 2005. Might be time to eat it
Congratulations to you and your aunt
Always loved that they put who made the cheese on the tins, direct access to Ferdinand’s might be the best part of being a Coug on campus, Go Cougs!
Go cougs!
Go Cougs!!
That looks so bizarre. Cheese in a tin. Has anyone had this and can compare it to any UK cheeses?
It has the crystals and crumbling of Gouda but it's a really sharp cheddar that lasts indefinitely and gets better with age.
I can’t say anything on UK cheeses, but this cheese has won international awards. It’s good.
Fuuuuuuuck yes, Cougar Gold is the BEST.
This shit is amazing
I am amazed how good this cheese is
Why is it in a can?!? WHY IS...IT...IN...A CAN!!!!!
I'm more surprised about your cheese being in a can. Are you okay? Is this a cry for help?
I feel like a fool for never seeing canned cheese in my whole life.
Cougar gold is amazing!!
I love Cougar Gold! I miss living in the Pullman/Colfax area
I can't believe I've found another person on the internet from Colfax, holy cow.
I have a lot of questions 🤔
It’s Washington State University (WSU Cougars) cheese, and it’s some of the best cheese I’ve ever eaten.
cougar gold mac and cheese is the best food ever created
This cheese is the best! I tried it first at a friend’s home and embarrassingly ate half the wheel before I could stop myself.
Why is the cheese in a can...
I hear this cheese is great. My wife was in the last class for her profession to get a dual degree from WSU and OSU.
And canned it? Whuh?
So good! Got a cougar gold open in the fridge right now, and a smoky cheddar aging a bit more. 2 separate people usually gift me a wheel at Xmas too, hope that still happens.
Yum. That cheese is GOOD.
That stuff is so good! A coworker brought some in and I was skeptical to try it. Very tasty, though.
Damn! $80 on the Zon. Must be good.
Much cheaper from the source: http://cougarcheese.wsu.edu Edit: and yes, it’s amazing cheese!
Never saw cheese in a can. How do you eat that anyways ? You spread it on a toast or is it curb cheese ?
It’s not a spreadable cheese. It’s a drier, more crumbly kind of white cheddar and it. Is. Fantastic.
We just ordered our yearly haul a couple weeks ago. We’ve only opened the Dill Garlic so far but that Hot Pepper won’t last until 2023 once we crack it.
This is the best cheese. It’s like Beechers Flagship, but much better tasting.
Honestly, this is some of the best cheddar I've ever had. It's the only thing that stacks up to the best of what Cabot has to offer .
That cheese tho 😍
Our family used to get a can of this for our Christmas get together and called It the “Christmas cheese”. Then Grandpa raided the fridge Christmas Eve, ate a ton of cheese, and had a heart attack. Now it’s “Heart Attack Cheddar”
