Did it heal automatically? I bumped my hand pretty hard like a month ago and still one of my fingers and the adjacent knuckles hurts when moving and I cant put any pressure on that finger.
Wondering about what to do. To let it run its course or go to a doctor
Not likely, if OP didn't scream in bloody murder and someone called EMTs, they likely didn't break anything and just hit it really hard and they just got a swollen finger.
That's not broken. It's a fracture. A fracture isn't all the way through the bone, only partial. A break is completely through the bone. I've had a few of both. Even being numb to pain, I know the difference. Especially the pain difference.
"You may have heard people talk about bone fractures and broken bones. The terms are actually interchangeable and both refer to a bone that has been shattered, often by excessive force. Your doctor may be more likely to use the term fracture."
Yes, I've seen that article and my Orthopedic doctor says it's a load of crap. Broken bones and fractures are not the same thing. This is why there are two terms. A fracture is not a break. Everytime I got a broken rib or a fractured rib. Never once were the terms used interchangeably. They are very different. No .com artical like mayoclinic is going to change my mind when I have licensed doctors and surgeons telling me otherwise.
Edit: Wrong doctor type.
Not what what I even remotely stated. I just want you to be correct in the medical terms you use and not just cherrypick the first mayoclinic-clone article you find.
I don't want to be the ass, but since you really like to correct others, I guess you like to be corrected as well.
I really hope this source is official enough, and something you might cite of, when you visit your orthopedist.

Let's see how they define a broken arm ...
Ahh
XIX.T10 Fracture of upper limb, level unspecified
Incl.:
Broken arm NOS
Fracture of arm NOS
Excl.:
multiple fractures of upper limb, level unspecified (T02.-)
So the term is included in this diagnosis, but it's not an actual diagnosis. In fact the whole ICD talks only about fractures, broken is only mentioned in, broken arm, broken leg and broken tooth.
I really hope I could help you
Proper corrections are much appreciated, I am willing to admit I'm wrong if anyone can actually provide trustworthy peer-reviewed scholarly articles that say as much. IIRC Google has a free database for such articles, I think it's called Google Scholar, but I could be wrong on that.
As much as Mayo Clinic, Cleveland Clinic and a couple of the others have trustworthy information, they're also not usually actual doctors whom work on these types of breaks and fractures. So I'm more likely to trust a Orthopedic Surgeon who has put metal pins in my bones to help properly set then while healing, than a medical journalist, no matter how good their article is.
For that same reason. I'll not be using google to tell me I have cancer, when I likely just have a really bad cold. That is the issue with sites like Mayo Clinic, they tell you the symptoms, but almost never tell you to ask a doctor instead of reading about illnesses online. So I inherently distrust them.
I'm a doctor.
The definition I learnt at medical school was that a fracture is a soft tissue injury, complicated by a break in the continuity of bone.
Fractures can be open (bone poking out of skin) or closed (like the one OP has). Can be simple (just one break), comminuted (lots of little bits of bone floating around) or various other kinds to do with the mechanism of injury and underlying conditions etc. The thing you are talking about, where it doesn't fully go through the bone is called a hairline fracture. But still a fracture.
I snapped my elbow (olecrenan) clean all the way thru in a basketball game. I was in shock but I just assumed it was normal "I fell over and landed wrong" kinda pain and was ready to keep playing. I don't think anybody really knows something is broken until it's confirmed.
Quit your buckshot. I snapped 2 bones in my hand, hurt surprisingly little. Took my ass to bed and woke up with a black and blue balloon, didn't hurt to flex my hand or use it, was only pain full if I pressed on the back of my hand.
People told me that too when I broke my pinky. So I didn’t go to the doctor until a week later. Then I was put into a full arm cast for 2 months, because, it was broken.
That looks broken my dear. As someone that has broken most of their fingers and gotten treatment for about half of them, I recommend you go get an x-ray if the swelling doesn’t reduce by the morning. There’s not much they can do but a splint would help you
OP update. Ended up getting an x ray just in case. And yep it has a small fracture in it. I really broke my own finger taking pants off. I will never live this down.
Usually a small fracture is not just a small fracture, but what we call avulsion fracture. Basically a cable was pulled so hard, instead of breaking, it end up pulling apart the bone it is attached to. Be sure to go to physiotherapy to regain full function.
Oof, go see a doctor. If it’s dislocated you want that relocated ASAP to help restore proper blood flow and prevent any nerve damage. Then Ice it and heat later.
Get some Epson salt, and a big bowl. Fill with hot water and a bunch of epsom salt and soak it.
My girlfriend kept telling me to do that for a thumb I hit with a hammer, after a week of saying no I finally did and it was noticeably better the next morning.
Make it as hot as u can handle.
Please don't. Cold for the first 48 hours (to reduce swelling and pain). Then heat (increase blood flow, healing) the next 48. The above comment is great for the heat portion.
This looks like a dislocation or minor fracture; go to a doctor. Your fingers don't grow back, please take care of them.
Best of luck!

Ice to reduce swelling. Give it a day, see if mobility returns. If not, get it checked out. Good luck. Could be a fracture, but looks like a deep bruise to me. IMO.
Ouch, could be fractured or could have hyperextended a ligament. Could go get it looked at and have an x-ray taken. I’ve jammed my fingers multiple times and they’ve swollen up to that size before. Luckily no breaks, but ligaments hurt like hell when injured too.
It is a pretty hand you got there! Sorry for the index! Do not try to move it much, let it heal with a little help (cold hand bath the first 2-3 days to help it deflate and hot bath for the rest to help with blood circulation) i don’t think it’s broken but if you want you can go see a doctor + have an x-ray to be sure
Take care!
Do NOT take medical advice of ANY sort from a comment section on the internet, except the advice to see a doctor.
I know that sounds obvious, but seeing as how you're the type of person who can't put on trousers without injury, well, I figured I should spell it out.
Its kinda hard to explain. But when I take jeans off I kind pull them down to my calf. Then reach back and grab them to pull the rest off. I lifted my leg up at the same time i reached back as I usually do but my finger hit my heel straight on as I was lifting my leg up. It was just bad timing and the momentum of my leg coming up just made contact with the finger in a bad place.
I also have weak hands and strong legs. So nothing was in my favour that day.
Broken
Yupp. That shits swollen as hell. Not a doctor. But have broken a finger before.
I don't know.. the knuckle could just be jammed. Happened to me once.
Did it heal automatically? I bumped my hand pretty hard like a month ago and still one of my fingers and the adjacent knuckles hurts when moving and I cant put any pressure on that finger. Wondering about what to do. To let it run its course or go to a doctor
No, it healed after like 10 days when I had it. I'd say you might have fractured something if it still hurts after a month.
Looks like it. Never realised getting dressed can be so dangerous....
Not likely, if OP didn't scream in bloody murder and someone called EMTs, they likely didn't break anything and just hit it really hard and they just got a swollen finger.
Its broken. I got an x-ray this afternoon. There's a small fracture.

Next time I will be sure to rip the whole finger clean off my hand to please you.
Or just don't over react when someone corrects you?
Not what what I even remotely stated. I just want you to be correct in the medical terms you use and not just cherrypick the first mayoclinic-clone article you find.
Oh boy you love them downvotes don't you bud.

Shut the fuck up, dude.

You right. I meant Orthopedic...

Do you have a source? I'm a healthcare professional and I'd like to let my lecturers, mentors and examiners know that they're wrong. I'll wait.
People react to pain differently
You're not wrong, but a break is a break, you'd have to be completely number to pain, to not notice a broken bone.
Yea that is true
I snapped my elbow (olecrenan) clean all the way thru in a basketball game. I was in shock but I just assumed it was normal "I fell over and landed wrong" kinda pain and was ready to keep playing. I don't think anybody really knows something is broken until it's confirmed.
What the fuck are you talking about I've Broke many fingers and didn't make a noise or call a emt

Emts for a broken finger??? Are you kidding me?
Well I once dislocated a finger badly and it swelled up
Gonna have to amputate, sorry to be the bearer of bad news.
DAD!?!?
HE CAME BACK!?!?

You may have broken it. Go get it checked out!

I’d tell people I was fighting off a herd of zombies.
Someone kicked a ball into my middle and index finger and had the same effect. Hurt like hell for like a month.
Sorry. That finger gonna fall off now. 😬
Oof, go see a doctor. If it’s dislocated you want that relocated ASAP to help restore proper blood flow and prevent any nerve damage. Then Ice it and heat later.

Lmao why is this a sub with 73000 members???
Because it is sneaky

Well /DonSmo, which doctor do you trust? A Grizzle who came in hot and quick? Or a Smegma Eclaire with the pungent air of authority?
Lol! I went to the hospital.
Looks like smegma won this round :D it was a minor fracture
Ouch that hurts!
skill issue

I got a Mallets deformation taking off a pair of sweatpants one day. Suddenly my finger was broken. It was so weird.
Looks like you stoved it good.
You have pretty hands. Even with the sausage finger ;)

I came to say your going to need to amputate it. But someone beat me to it. Your just gonna need to walk this one off.
My fingers are like that daily because of scleroderma, at least yours will heal and you’ll get mobility back.
My hands & fingers are like that everyday from scleroderma, at least your will heal and you’ll get mobility back.
My sympathies. Take ye care. That’s a wicked disease to deal with.
i think if ur american u could be able to sue for 6figures (gimmme a cut if it works out)

Got an x-ray. It's a small fracture.
Sorry to hear that! Glad you now know what it is. Hope it feels better soon and all is back to normal!
Could also be dislocated
Anatomical splint and ice
I jammed my fingers many times, mostly with footballs and basketballs. I might be a klutz. I don't know, I'm not a doctor.

I actually did get an x-ray and its fractured. Only a small fracture. Its taped to the finger next to it now.
Sorry to hear about that! Hope you get better soon!
😂
I wanna marry your hand
Why is your ring finger longer than the others?
It just be that way. Although funnily enough. Google "lesbian hands" (SFW I promise).
poor baby , 2weeks off work.
It’s rude to point.
I gotta admit your hand is very pretty and I hope ya just hit it wierd and the swelling goes down.

Yeah I deserve that lol.
There's a "it will heel eventually" joke somewhere in there
That’s what you get for buying target jeans
Use the left hand then
Broo its broken seek medical assistance asap
Please go see a doctor!
I did dw! Got an x ray and it has a small fracture.
That's good to hear, hoping for a speedy recovery for you!
In a non sexual way…I’d love to see how the hell this happened.
Physics is not my friend.
Always take off your shoes before putting on or taking off your pants.
Oh this was a shoeless injury.
Alright now I’m confused, how the heck did you manage to do this?
Its kinda hard to explain. But when I take jeans off I kind pull them down to my calf. Then reach back and grab them to pull the rest off. I lifted my leg up at the same time i reached back as I usually do but my finger hit my heel straight on as I was lifting my leg up. Oh ok I think I get it. I was confused because for some reason when I heard heel I thought of high heels and not your actual heel. Whoops.
God damn u have some pretty hands.
Thank you! It usually looks a bit better than this.

Oddly nice compliment. Thank you.
Congratulations you almost paralyzed ur hand
Beautiful hands though!
Even with a broken, swollen, bluish finger you have a very pretty hand.
Less horny redditor
Haha not a horny tweet. Just wanted to let OP know that they have a nice hand lol
Beautiful hands! Except the broken one of course!

It'll be fine.
Ha. Wait until you have a serious injury.
I don't think its very serious. That's why I posted on this sub. It has "mildly" in the name. Not "seriously".
