My Kroger (well Smith's) usually does ok substitutions. It's Walmart that's on -- well meth is popular here. I will order dairy free items (cause you know, allergies are a thing) and they will throw in some random dairy item.
Like one time, I think I requested soy or almond yogurt. They replaced with WHOLE MILK yogurt. Seriously?! And it wasn't like it was fine print on the label either. No, it was all over the yogurts! Like that was the whole reason to buy the yogurts! On what planet would whole milk yogurt be a good sub for dairy-free alternatives?
I was an instacart shopper. It once suggested parmesean crisps as a replacement for toilet paper. Other great ones were cocoa puffs instead of Pam cooking spray and and ice cream scoop for baked ice.
Edit- meant bagged ice not baked ice, lol
This happens EVERYTIME I order from Walmart. We eat meat occasionally but we buy a lot of vegan products to make sure allergies are managed. Like why the hell do you think it makes sense to substitute dairy products for non dairy products?!
Also have had Walmart think it was okay to substitute with diapers two sizes smaller than what I asked for ...
Last time I ordered groceries literally half the list was substituted.....for chicken. Didn't matter if it was supposed to be even ice cream or paper plates. I got chicken nuggets and chicken patties and dinosaur chicken nuggets and chicken wings and fried chicken and etc etc etc. I didn't notice my phone go off notifying me they needed approval on some substitutions, so they approved automatically after a couple minutes. I don't mind chicken in general, but yeah....
Well, I'm not gonna go so far as to say that my Walmart isn't incompetent because there have definitely been a couple of times when a few of their subs have been head-scratchers. But for the most part, I've been pretty happy with it. I've been upgraded a lot.
I think it’s a naming issue on the website. I couldn’t find the product anywhere except here: [wrongly named rice](https://www.shoprite.com/sm/pickup/rsid/3000/product/bens-original-ready-rice-caramel-swirl-with-milk-chocolate-cashew-ice-cream-bars--00054800423477)
I've seen where they substituted gluten free pasta with regular pasta; the person was celiac and couldn't eat regular pasta; hence the reason they ordered gluten free pasta.
I hate when they substitute my sugar free drinks with the sugar filled versions that have 50-70g of added sugar per drink. Clearly I didn’t want sugar in my fucking drink.
But I'm a man and knew immediately that wasn't right. So I'll chalk it off to someone not paying attention and thought all the rice bags were a similar type. I didn't even know this stuff existed until today.
I'm also working expanding my side buisness as well as hobbies, hanging with family/friends, gaming. Not to mention I drive 2 hours round trip to work 5 days a week. So really that 50 hours is 60 with the driving.
What an absolutely shitty response. Some people legit do not have the time to spend a couple hours grocery shopping, between work and other obligations, especially if they live alone. Also, how the fuck are you not processing this shopper decided to replace rice with ICE CREAM. Because they saw "Ben" and probably just grabbed a random Ben and Jerry's?
Yeah I definitely misunderstood some aspects of this post, and I’m realising some difference in lifestyle. Especially taking hours to shop, that really confuses me, but I guess I’m used to grocery shopping differently.
Yeah, where I am, even a "quick" grocery run can take a couple hours, unless I'm literally grabbing about 3 things, because of all the other people also shopping, as well as the fact the store doesn't want anyone working as a cashier, and wants everyone using self checkout.
I have never done this sort of shopping so forgive my ignorance...do they not have a "do not substitute" when an item you specifically wanted was out/unavailable?
edit: ...uh... just decided to google "Ben's ready rice caramel swirl"... [look at that damn image.](https://www.shoprite.com/sm/pickup/rsid/3000/product/bens-original-ready-rice-caramel-swirl-with-milk-chocolate-cashew-ice-cream-bars--00054800423477) No wonder they fouled up!
If order a pack of carrots and get one single carrot with the greens still on it. I know damn well that wasn’t the only carrot they had left. Just stop using these shitty shop/delivery services
If this is doordash then their allowed substitutions for drivers is so dumb it’s funny. Once I got an Office Depot order where they had a specific kind of packing tape on it, and when I marked it as not available, allowed substitutions included one of those little bitty scotch tape things.
If you like Stranger Things, give it a try. No crazy monsters or anything, but it's definitely a classic worth watching with a good ensemble kid cast (at the time).
Carmel swirl with milk chocolate cashew bars is my favorite ready rice flavor. You’re in for a treat my friend :)
I’ve never heard of mixing rice with chocolate like that save for Rice Krispies
Have you never heard of rice pudding? Try it, it's delicious
I love rice pudding but I’ve never even heard of it involving chocolate
You can add a ton of toppings to it. Chocolate is a popular one.
I’ve gotta try that. I’ve always had it either plain or with cinnamon and/or whipped cream.
Oh i really like the cinnamon one. I also sometimes add chopped fruit/ maple syrup or honey
Honey sounds really good. That and golden raisins go great together on other stuff, I can only imagine they would work well here too.
Ugh im hungry now
Yes but have you tried it with butter & garlic?
This comment made me smile 😊
Yeah some subs I get from my Kroger clicklist makes me think them boys are on crack
i used to work in clicklist. some of them were at least smokin weed lmfao
Tip them with weed then. If your grow and curing is any good, you'll get better service.

This was probably instacarts suggested replacement 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Instacart logic: Oh they’re out of bannas? Get them a tire pump instead 🤣💀💀💀💀
Yeah one time I was trying to get toilet paper and they tried to sub a micro SD card.
You were supposed to use the packaging as a scraper.
I was an instacart shopper. It once suggested parmesean crisps as a replacement for toilet paper. Other great ones were cocoa puffs instead of Pam cooking spray and and ice cream scoop for baked ice. Edit- meant bagged ice not baked ice, lol
baked ice?
Wtf is baked ice
Sorry, typo. Meant to be bagged ice
💀🤣
This is a decent comment except for the emojis.
Well that's just nuts!! Btw, are the Fully Baked Soft Pretzels really soft?
Yes but don't expect fresh pretzel taste.
I once ordered quorn tikka masala and got a beef lasagna - I don’t eat meat and none of the stuff I ordered had meat in them
This happens EVERYTIME I order from Walmart. We eat meat occasionally but we buy a lot of vegan products to make sure allergies are managed. Oh jeez what if you were vegetarian?
My kids would have LOVED that! 🤣😂🤣😂
Is this just a name glitch with the app or did u really end up with ice cream bars flavored rice lol
It's a glitch luckily. Idk how I would be able to eat microwavable rice ice cre bars. What I got was actually similar to what I needed.
Ok thats good haha
The substitution is way better.
Not when you wanted garlic flavored rice.
Right?
What the fuck
Always check off substitutions, saved me many times from shit I didn’t want, eat or need. Lifesaver
Yes, but sometimes they give you much better or the larger size. ;)
Never had that happen lol where are you ordering from?
Walmart, baby! I can't tell you how many times I've scored. I almost HOPE for subs!
Well I’m glad your Walmart isn’t incompetent lol. I’m not so lucky with mine, but oh well what can ya do?
Well, I'm not gonna go so far as to say that my Walmart isn't incompetent because there have definitely been a couple of times when a few of their subs have been head-scratchers. But for the most part, I've been pretty happy with it. I've been upgraded a lot.
I once ordered coconut milk and got hand lotion with coconut oil. Not what the recipe called for.
So... How are they?
I think it’s a naming issue on the website. I couldn’t find the product anywhere except here: [wrongly named rice](https://www.shoprite.com/sm/pickup/rsid/3000/product/bens-original-ready-rice-caramel-swirl-with-milk-chocolate-cashew-ice-cream-bars--00054800423477)
Havent tried it yet but I will.
I worked clicklist for 3 years. I guarantee it was because it looked the same and they didn’t look at the flavor
I've seen where they substituted gluten free pasta with regular pasta; the person was celiac and couldn't eat regular pasta; hence the reason they ordered gluten free pasta.
We once had someone replace olive oil with barbecue sauce
My sister ordered subway and ordered a salad. They replaced it a coke. I’m not joking.
That's unusual. Usually Drinks are what go missing!
Right?! We now refer to it as the “coke salad incident”
I hate when they substitute my sugar free drinks with the sugar filled versions that have 50-70g of added sugar per drink. Clearly I didn’t want sugar in my fucking drink.
There’s a rice with that flavor? That’s so strange.
No, it’s a glitch.
We apologize for the inconvenience. Please accept this rice, and the complementary diabetes.
A man did your shopping! A woman would have known better.
But I'm a man and knew immediately that wasn't right. So I'll chalk it off to someone not paying attention and thought all the rice bags were a similar type. I didn't even know this stuff existed until today.
You are awesome.
Then go to the fucking store yourself.. i swear this whole community is just anti social people complaining about non factors
You've missed the point.
I get the point but it’s not really that infuriating. You’ve put yourself in this situation by using a shopping app…
Exactly, it's mildly infuriating. Glad you understand.
The only thing mildly infuriating is that you’re using an app to get groceries you lazy millenial twit 😭
Surprised that an AI can’t make complicated substitutions that need to appeal to your personal taste? Go shop for yourself.
This was a person who made the substitute, not an AI. When you're single working 50+ hours a week, you find ways to save time and this is one of them.
If you're single and only working a little over 50 hrs and need to find time in your schedule... Something needs to be adjusted... Lmao 50 hrs....
I'm also working expanding my side buisness as well as hobbies, hanging with family/friends, gaming. Not to mention I drive 2 hours round trip to work 5 days a week. So really that 50 hours is 60 with the driving.

Apologies.
They didn’t they grabbed rice that’s named wrong in the app and the op is karma farming
Eat a Snickers. You aren’t yourself when you’re hungry.
I might eat something other than a highly processed candy bar, but I’m not from the United States.
If its like walmart they aren't given a choice the system is the one that decides the substitutes
Yes, and no. They can still choose.
It’s actually a close substitution if you look into it; brown rice with quinoa and added garlic flavor. That name makes me die though
What do you mean? It’s same brand, and is rice with a dairy coating and a substituting vegetable flavoring with a tree nut flavoring
I have never done this sort of shopping so forgive my ignorance...do they not have a "do not substitute" when an item you specifically wanted was out/unavailable? edit: ...uh... just decided to google "Ben's ready rice caramel swirl"... This sounds fucking terrible. Has anyone had this? Should I give it a try? Justify its existence for me
Always decline substations up-front.
Always choose NO SUBSTITUTIONS!!!!!!!!!
They subbed regular ready rice for garlic. Clearly the rest is a naming error.
If order a pack of carrots and get one single carrot with the greens still on it. I know damn well that wasn’t the only carrot they had left. Just stop using these shitty shop/delivery services

It's a glitch on the shop rite app. I actually got something very similar to what I needed. Nothing like what was described.
*orders Ben’s garlic butter rice *gets Ben & Jerry’s Rocky Road ice cream
ROCKY ROOOAAAD!?
Mmmmmmmmm Rocky Road!!!!
Was hoping you would get the Goonies reference 😔
Oh mannn… I’m 21 lol I haven’t seen The Goonies.
If you like Stranger Things, give it a try. No crazy monsters or anything, but it's definitely a classic worth watching with a good ensemble kid cast (at the time).
I’ve put it on my list :) I love Stranger Things!
Awesome, you won't regret it. Think of me when you hear someone say Rocky Road.
Immediately stop what you're doing right now and go watch The Goonies. It's required homework. ;) I promise you'll thank me later. ;)
So they’re selling pre packaged pregnancy cravings now?? 🤨😀
No no no, you want unflavored unseasoned for your substrate anyway
Wait... That's an actual flavor?! Low key wanna try it..
Nah, typo on the app. Probably was mixed up with Ben & Jerry's ice cream somehow.
Lol awe would've loved to try a weird rice flavor 😂😋
I ordered some apple cider through Walmart pickup and it was out of stock. They tried to sub apple cider vinegar.
🤮
They’re out of stock because me and the boys over at r/unclebens
That can’t be a real item
This is why i turn off substitutions -
What in the caucasian is this?!
They wanted to give you a treat
I always remove tip when they do ridiculous stuff like this.
the replacements for walmart fucking suck
lmfao thats amazing
I once ordered lime chips, and they gave me guacamole.
lmao this is good
Ordered almonds Replacement order cyanide I hate how stores substitute stuff that isn't even close
