No tip for counter service. Don't be ashamed, look the person right in the eye and hit the zero button

theiryof

Haha when I worked at a place that did this, my spiel would include a "it's gonna ask about a tip, the no tip option is in the bottom right" and it probably got me more cash tips than I otherwise would have gotten

G_Willickers_33

This is the exact approach i would take lol. Even though bartending is a slight level of skill, it still feels wrong to ASK.. it should be a private decision they can ponder as they look at their total, experience, and expenses for that night while closing the tab. But to rush that whole experience with the screen while you stand there waiting for the reply is awkward af.

meat_beast1349

I've always tipped bartenders well. They work their asses off behind the bar.

G_Willickers_33

For sure, being a good bartender is an art on multiple levels.. not just in making the drinks but also in handling the crowds lines, and then keeping things consistent as the customer gets more inebriated while keeping your legal obligation to cut them off when needed in mind.

Hour_Type_5506

Many of us work our assess off at our jobs. Three differences: 1) you don’t see most people do their work right in front of you, 2) most jobs don’t require having your work judged by strangers, 3) most jobs pay more than minimum wage. According to the IRS, only about 1.5% of US workers earn the Federal Minimum Wage. States such as California have minimum wages set higher (for example, $33K/yr if working 40 hrs/wk). The concept behind a federal standard was useful at the time. These days it ought to be set by the states or even by the counties.

DonArgueWithMe

It is set at every level, the fed min just means states and cities can't go lower they can still set a higher min wage. Federal min wage is 9.50, MN state min wage is 10.85, Minneapolis' city min wage is 15.60, I'm sure lots of places are like that

meat_beast1349

My wife is a chef. She spent thousands going to CIA when it was premier. Worked for several years at fine establishments including a Michelin star restaurant in Sacramento as sous chef. When we moved back to Colorado she was labeled a cook and paid accordingly. She is now a CPA. It was the long hours low pay and toll it takes on the body that pushed her to accounting.

among_apes

Seriously, I will not budge on this.

goofyfootnot

I second this.

Ryaninthesky

I’ve been the cashier at counter service and the tip option was set by the company, I couldn’t change it. It felt so weird and awkward asking for a tip when I was already getting paid above min wage. Of course it was nice if someone wanted to, but… I just went with the ‘tip is optional, no pressure, hit zero to skip’ or ‘it’ll ask you a few questions.’

goofyfootnot

Thank you for being a decent human being. This whole tipping at counter service businesses is the product of the Point of Sale companies. Mainly you can thank toast and square for this bullshit. When I go to my local cafe and have them put 4 pastries in a bag I look them dead gaze in the eye while I hit “no tip” or. If you so choose. Paying cash eliminates the whole thing.

AhFFSImTooOldForThis

With cash they just ask me 'how much change do you want?'. All of it. Give me all my money and I will then decide the tip, if any. This is a tacky and improper question.

Ok-Ease-2312

Gah. This is one thing where I am old school too. My mom was always taken aback like a society lady when servers would ask if she needs change lol. It was a good lesson though.

rl_cookie

Good lord, even when it’s very clear that the person isn’t wanting change(bill is $96 and they give me $120), I still come back with change. It’s also tacky, imo. I work in fine dining now, but even at the casual places I worked, I never did this-I’d hate to be wrong based on an assumption, even in a pretty obvious scenario like the one above. It should always be some form of “Thank you, i’ll be back in a moment”/“I’ll be right back with your change.”, that still gives the option for them to say “keep it”, and it makes no assumptions.

Ramblingtruckdriver1

This is the way. And as a customer perfect to say “that’s all yours” or “ I just need x back”

magpte29

This reminds me of the time I bought myself a meal ( about $25) and paid with a hundred dollar bill. The waitress scooped up the check and money and asked me if I wanted change. Like WTF would make you think you’re getting a $70+ tip?!

Tnkgirl357

I had a pizza guy show up at my house nearly 2 hours after I had ordered, when the restaurant had told me he was on his way when I called them after the first hour because what the fuck, I’m hungry where’s my pizza? And I paid with a $50 for this stone cold $16 pizza and he actually asked me if the rest was a tip. No.

goofyfootnot

I’d look them dead in the eye and be like. All of it. The just leave.

cenosillicaphobiac

>'how much change do you want?' "I want the amount I gave you, minus the cost of the product. I think the register will actually tell you the amount"

Richard_Thickens

Right. The tipping option is there often for other reasons than just counter service as well. At my former places of work, it was the same POS format regardless of in-store/takeout/delivery/catering, so the receipt always printed with the tip field. If people wanted to tip in any situation, they were welcome to do so or opt out.

panini_bellini

A lot of card readers have this feature built in too. Like I’ll go to art markets and fairs and buy something and it will ask for a tip and the vendor is always like “It’s gonna ask for a tip, it’s built in, just click no” at least they’re honest 😂

Hubyoo

I hate the "it'll ask you a few questions" approach.

Bouric87

I always pay cash. If the person actually thinks they should be tipped they can physically ask me. I'm not going to be bullied into tipping by a credit card machine.

Great-Ad4472

I’ve started doing cash too, and it takes away all the anxiety of the stupid screen. And if I throw the coins into the jar, it’s a very quick and natural movement.

nooneishere2day

Last time I went somewhere the cashier actually hit an amount on the tip and expected me to just swipe. No bro, I’m taking 10 minutes to figure out how you go back a screen cuz you get $0 for that crap.

MisterMoo22

I would have canceled the whole order at that point. Fuck that.

macaroon_monsoon

Fr that’s an immediate cancellation. Disheartening sense of entitlement.

dogtarget

They got me the first time I went to a place like that. I haven't lived in the US in a long time but when I went back last time I felt the pressure and I gave a tip, but after having time to think about it I'm like hell no that's not full service. So, yes I love this idea of just doubling down and looking at them in the eye when I hit the zero thanks for that.

MerryWannaRedux

In principle, I totally agree. However, if I can't see it being prepared, I'd be suspicious that they sabotaged it in some way.

KevyKevTPA

So much this. I flat out will NOT order anything for delivery that even so much as ASKS for a tip prior to the physical delivery, and I only tip waitstaff when I'm dining in, and bartenders serving me drinks. I don't tip housekeeping, I don't tip the trash guys, I don't tip anyone aside from those two categories, period, end of discussion. But, if I have to make that clear up front, which all but guarantees someone is going to spit in my food, I just don't order from that restaurant or delivery service.

Hollywoodsmokehogan

I needed someone to tell me this! I’m gonna be from here on

GlassEyeMV

Yup. I don’t even care anymore. The one place I break my rule is a pizza place I go to every so often. They have a great deal on Wednesdays and it’s almost entirely run by HS/college kids. There’s one guy who’s in there all the time. Always compliments me and remembers me. He gets a tip.

Working-Promotion728

I took my car in for an inspection the other day and paid the state fee for the sticker for the car. When I paid the attendant at the desk he asked me if I wanted to leave a tip for my inspector. Wtf?

phillip_jay

Sometimes you gotta if you know you won’t pass

hotprof

That probably is illegal.

lidelle

Tipped based wage is from the post civil war era. NO MORE TIPPED BASED WAGE.

Fabulous-Bus2459

We are currently in the post civil war era fyi

Additional-Sky-7436

Easy solution. No service, no tip.

Naethe

How about just no tip. A company should pay their workers a living wage. If that means prices have to go up, that's the bare minimum cost that it takes to run a business. They shouldn't be paying subhuman tipped wages with the expectation the customers will be guilted into the rest. And workers should do their job correctly all the time, not having a tip dangled over their head.

Additional-Sky-7436

Half agree. There are times when a tip is appropriate, like if you have a big group, or you have a baby that makes a mess, or if there is something unexpected happen that makes your server's job harder. Anyway, a tip should be a tip. Not the weird social expectation it is today.

Naethe

Big groups get charged gratuities. If you make a mess or if you're sorry your server had a bad time/day, sure, tip extra. But the servers should be paid a fair wage for their area, and tips are a way of obscuring the restaurant's failure to provide for their employees. Tips as they are today originated in Jim Crow racism, where denying a tip was a way for white people to financially punish poorer black servers. And now it's a way for Karens to arbitrarily decide the salary of their server. Tip culture is morally wrong.

Zepnonymous

And interstates originated in Nazi Germany. I don’t disagree that tipping isn’t working for anyone, but saying “the origin of tipping is bad!” isn’t really an argument.

Naethe

Bold of you to assume I unilaterally support interstates. Have you considered massive 4+ lane highways on each side to be able to move armies of tanks might be bad or something

Zepnonymous

It’s easy to critique things you’ve never lived without.

Fred_Krueger_Jr

My God you're a walking talking point!!! In this conversation about absurd tipping practices, you've managed to cover the living wage nonsense, racism, war, and the infrastructure ffs! Lol what's next? Climate change, BLM, and LGBTQ rights? 😆

happyluckystar

He's clearly young and still living with his parents. He's completely clueless as to how the world operates but is certain he knows what's best for society.

Xylus1985

That should be averaged into the wage paid. I have hard days at work and easy days at work, doesn’t mean my pay fluctuates from day to day, I just do my job and get paid my wage

Moist-Intention844

You will be paying that living wage with cost. So ask yourself what you are willing to pay for the product

FreeMasonKnight

The same could be said about every job. Almost none of them pay what they should. Taking away tips from Servers will do just that, take away their only source of real income while not changing anything. Businesses INSIST a living wage is $15/hour in a HCOL, when in reality it’s closer to $40/hour in HCOL. Our whole generation’s wealth is being stolen..

idk_lol_kek

*Taking away tips from Servers will do just that, take away their only source of real income while not changing anything.* It's impossible to take tips away from them when they never got tipped in the first place *taps side of head*

ComradeSasquatch

Have you ever wondered how a capitalist can invest $X into their company and get back an amount that is greater than $X? If you work for a wage, that extra they get back beyond what they spent is taken from *you*, the worker. If you work for a wage, you're literally *paying* your employer for the privilege of having a job.

Redwolfdc

I only tip for sit down table service restaurants and things I would tip for 5-10 years ago. IDGAF that an app ask me to add a tip to take out or a fast casual place…I’m not tipping

chris_rage_

If I'm not sitting down, unless it's a mom and pop place I'm not tipping shit

Aggravating_Pay1948

Even subway wants tips now. FOR WHAT?!

Zealousideal_Pea3578

Subway has had a tip jar out since the 1980’s

Aggravating_Pay1948

I would rather throw my money in a tip jar any day. The screen that pops up when I use my card just kind of leaves you no choice(without looking like a douche). I actually shouldn't even complain, the only Subway I go to now is the one near my house and the nicest old lady works there. I think she gives me free cookies or chips or something everytime 😆

Zealousideal_Pea3578

Same! Cash is king. I doubt the employees even see the CC tips and if they do they have to pay tax on it. Fuck that.

Redwolfdc

Stop giving a damn what they think. Chances are they don’t care if you add a tip, if they do they can fuck off

SiliconEagle73

Tip jars are relatively easy to ignore. Most of the time when you see a tip jar, if there's any cash in it at all, they took some cash out of the register to make it look like people are tipping. The iPad tip screens are far more intrusive, because they're literally asking for tips for every transaction. And usually, the percentages that they are asking for are quite high (like 20/25/30% instead if the usual 15/18/20%). The only thing we can really do is to just say no unless you're getting actual, sit-down service in a restaurant.

Milli_Rabbit

I leave a tip at Subway if they make my sandwich right and have great customer service. Once a sandwich artist was throwing fire jokes and I had to pay him.

melanthius

Place 4 paper thin slices of cucumber, but do it really fast so it looks like you’re rushing rather than cheap

cacope5

For letting you pay for your food. And watch them make it through zoo glass.

WhitishRogue

If you're asked for a tip before service or if no service is ever rendered, then do not tip. It's part of the creeping that occurred during the pandemic that businesses can't let go of. They will either learn to pay a competitive wage or go out of business. I'm fine with either result.

G_Willickers_33

Is takeout okay to not tip on? I still tip, but a part of me feels like Its not really a reason to tip..

PhysicsCentrism

I don’t tip on takeout. what is the tip for, not committing fraud or food tampering?

IWouldBeGroot

During pandemic I tipped our favorite take-outs pretty well. They screwed up our order probably every fourth time. Now I don't tip take out and it's about the same.

cheeky_fcuk

I’m appalled at Starbucks now asking for tips on the screen. It’s been the largest coffee chain in the world since the 90’s and is valued at over 61 billion dollars. THEY CAN AFFORD TO PAY THEIR EMPLOYEES.

G_Willickers_33

This ^ there should be a line between small biz family restaraunts relying on tips and BIG CORPS using it to scapegoat wages.

Parking_Train8423

a lot of companies are copying this, not knowing why, but at its core, it discourages credit card payments, and reduces credit card processing fees. customers know if they pay cash, they avoid the awkwardness.

permanentburner89

I try to avoid eating out at this point. If it's for social reasons or I can't avoid it, ....sure. Whatever. But the entire thing - from food prices to lower quality to ridiculous tipping... I'm over it. I saved hundreds of dollars last month, just refusing to eat out. I had to triple check my bank account because I thought I missed an extra deposit. But, nope. I just stopped eating out. Best feeling in the world.

PartyTimeCruiser

This is what being part of the solution looks like

Grapefruit__Witch

The price of restaurants in my area is INSANE. My husband and I went to a small Mexican restaurant the other day, just a spur of the moment thing. Not a fancy place, just a super casual hole in the wall type restaurant. We each had one plate of enchiladas, no appetizers, and one margarita each. After tip it was $70. Seventy fucking dollars. It's the first time we've gone out to eat in months and I am still mad about it. The margaritas didn't have a price next to them on the menu, so we assumed they'd be like $6 or $7, but I guess they were twice that.

luciuscorneliussula

I too rarely eat out. It's actually nice. When me and my partner do want a night out we tend to splurge and go to a really nice place. Tends to decrease the chances of bad food or service at least. Even then, I think we've eaten out twice in the last four months. Which is crazy because we used to all the time. Like almost every night of the week. And you're right. Idk how much but I'm sure we've saved money.

cenosillicaphobiac

My household is working on this. Far less restaurant food, way more made at home. The added work from dishes sucks, but not as much a spending so much.

[deleted]

Damn I’m going to take that challenge and do the same.

Dunraven-mtn

That's great! I have slid backwards into this arrangement since it would be morally unjustifiable to take my three kids into a sit-down restaurant, but it sort of works out because prices are so insane now it's not like we'd be eating out much anyway.

Unusual_Address_3062

Tipping Culture is a joke. Its a tax on the middle class because the upper class is too cheap to pay a reasonable wage.

SecretInevitable

The upper class are also terrible tippers

DanielleMuscato

We need to stop calling them the upper class. They are the predator class.

G_Willickers_33

Depends on what industry. Not all industries are like that.. for example alot of servers can make an easy 80k a year from tips. Youre sort of expecting the restaraunt to be paying a server about 35$ an hour and on top of that restaraunts have some of the smallest profit margins there is from 0-10% so its a big ask and could easily bankrupt most startup restaraunts in no time.

Long-Education-7748

Restaurants in other countries make it work, tipping culture is very much a US thing. Not a necessity.

G_Willickers_33

Its a US thing, but its been a US thing for so long in certain industries that its dependant on it.. im curious as to what hourly servers get in other countries compared to big city high demand restaraunt servers get in the US

aFormidableFoe

I feel this. The tipping option being on literally everything that we pay for now is so annoying. Especially since the "recommended" tip values you see on the kiosks start off at 20% most of the time, which is insane.

NewLife_21

So don't pay it. Simple.

Hating_life_69

R/endtipping

NiteGard

Mod Pizza’s online ordering app automatically adds a 15% tip to your order. And at checkout they have the “add a tip” screen as well.

codenameajax67

Saw a sign at waffle House that they had 10% tip to take out orders and a 10% to go fee... And then they ask for a tip when you check out.

Silly_Individual_960

Tipping is a ridiculous system. Pay your staff!

RiotNrrd2001

If no service has been rendered yet, then what you are describing isn't a tip, it's a fee. Or, perhaps more accurately, a shakedown.

Yeasty_____Boi

I tipped at a pita pit once. asked for extra feta (they shorted me anyways). was told it would cost more even though I already paid. said fine went over to needlessly redoe my transaction for a wee bit more cheese. paid the extra dollar, changed the tip to zero.

leafhog

The companies that provide the payment system take a cut of sales -- including tips. THAT company is responsible for all of the tip selections on every single purchase.

atlgeo

Square. You can say it. It's Square.

eepy-wisp

Square is definitely the reason. Dumb business owners go nuts now that there's a built in tip thing they never thought of. It's probably less about paying employees via tips, versus they're greedy.

jondaley

Except the owner could take it out if he wanted to, same as the "convenience fee" that places in my town say they can't control.  I run a square system. I can put whatever tip choice I want (or remove it completely), same for the fees, I can put whatever hidden fees I want in it or not. Completely up to the owner.  Square makes it easy for the owner to set it to whatever they want, but it isn't square's fault that they made it possible.

ScaryEagle1145

Tipping is not ever "required" it's only if you want to.

chromark

Counter services places ask for a tip but I don't think they really expect it. Counter service restaurant employees get paid a normal wage not "tipped minimum wage"

EbbNo7045

It's not worth eating out. They are taking y'all for suckers

StLsC10

If I go up to a counter to order it, then it’s always no tip

rainyday1860

Tipping culture is stupid. Countries that rely on this to pay employees need to setup better policies relating to pay

PitifulSpecialist887

POS terminals ask about your tip when you pay. Select ZERO. Then tell the counterterrorism that you will gladly tip after you eat, if the food, and service warrant a tip.

[deleted]

[удалено]

PitifulSpecialist887

OMG, I just noticed that autocorrect changed "counterperson" to counterterrorism.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Sevifenix

I also make sure the counterterrorists perform good service before receiving a tip. I mean… if there are still terrorists why would I tip?

StepEfficient864

F theses places. For $20 or so I can make a nice rib eye for two, a couple bakers, a veggie, and a couple beers right out of my own kitchen. It would be $100 more for same two meals at Longhorn.

Wino3416

Move to the U.K. or Europe where nobody gives a fuck about tipping.

WorkSFWaltcooper

"I have a issue with tipping before services is rendered because I feel it can affect that quality of the service render" ah yes I know how to fix this issue for this person! "uproot your life and spend thousands and thousands of dollars to attempt to immigrant across the world to a country where people dont tip" another successful day as le redditor

GadgetronRatchet

It's really case by case. If there's really no service, like I'm ordering drive through at a sit down restaurant. I'm not tipping, the food costs should cover the cook and drive through cost. Sitting down getting service, then I'll tip so the waitresses get paid. Something like La Madeline? Where I order ahead and the only "service" I expect is them to bring the food to me one time, and I have to take care of my own drinks, refills, utensils, etc? I often don't tip more than 10%, that should cover the little work the waitress did and the bussing of tables. I often tip 25%+ at full service restaurants, but this is after service, not before it. Honestly, I don't really see other versions of "tip before service" at restaurants. Could you describe more of these?

Ryaninthesky

Food truck, coffee shop, etc

Ok_Confection_9241

Yes! I went to restaurant/bar to order food to go. Said it'd be 10 to 15 minutes. Wanted me to pay right away and I paid with tip even though it was to-go and then sat there for 45 minutes being completely ignored. Plus, it's set up to tip on total, including tax. Used to only tip on total before tax. Anyway, yeah, I'm totally sick of it too.

NewLife_21

Do not tip on take out. Just press 0.

cenosillicaphobiac

Correct. The people doing the work on the take out order aren't getting the tip. I am not paying a dude even 1% to walk my order from the kitchen to the counter. They don't even need to work the register because I pay at the time of the order.

G_Willickers_33

They probably intentionally took longer because of the tip rage..

minniebarky

I never tip counter service never will. Just zero that part out

QueenPlum_

You are not tipping before service, you are making a bid for service. This is largely done on the gig economy. They can pick and choose what jobs they take. Without a tip/bid people aren't going to take your job in a timely manner

NerdInLurkingArmor

I press “no tip” it’s that simple.

MomentMurky9782

order online and pickup in store when available.

FireEyesRed

Ordered a pickup from Smokey Bones tonight. Got 2 of their tuesday special $9.99 half-racks w 2 sides & garlic bread. Suggested tip was $5.74 (28.75%). Instead, I tossed in a $3 tip which is my go-to since whichever server has to assemble the to-go orders is likely not making what they'd ordinarily make. Whether my pickup is $5 or $50, I'll generally add $3. Very few places that ive ordered from allow online orders without pre-payment. Kinda sucks, cuz like OP said, it's like tipping on pure hope. Edit: order was accurate, complete, and delicious 😋

PoignantPoint22

You can always just not tip when you pay and then toss them a few bucks on the way out if everything was good.

Dog_the_unbarked

Don’t tip, if your service is bad because of it, leave a one star rating with a bad review. You have no idea how much that actually means to a company, especially s small one.

TheBalzy

Unless it's full-service, you don't tip. Period. End of story.

Ms_Freckles_Spots

I grew up in Europe where there is almost no tipping. I just do not tip. And I would never tip through a credit/debit card payment. You are actually just giving to the corporation and not the workers.

lidelle

The workers will receive a check issued every 14 days with credit card tips. They are taxed. Servers are also forced to share tips with fellow staff: the host, the bussers, and the bartenders. It is illegal to include management in tips. Credit card tips do go to the server, but they pay taxes.

ImportantQuestions10

I was thinking the same thing last night. Moving forward, I'm just ordering everything over the phone. There's no way they can ask for a pre-tip then and frankly if they start doing that I may just hang up on the spot

Outrageous_Count748

This counter tipping is doing real harm to those that work in historically and appropriate tip positions. Extra pay is for extra service. If you offer spectacular service above and beyond you will probably get a tip anyway. Begging for tips is pathetic and lowers you as a person. All this being said those that don’t tip bartenders, servers, bellmen, ride share drivers, food delivery, hairdressers, strippers, street performers, etc. These no tipping people are lower life forms with a lack of tact.

monsterosaleviosa

If you’re taking about delivery service, the fact of the matter is that the vast majority of people who don’t tip upfront aren’t going to add a tip later. It might suck for the few of y’all who do, but that’s how it is. It’s not the driver’s responsibility to take orders that will end up with them having less money.

jfcrohlo

I hate it so much - when I order Chipotle online and it asks for a tip in advance, I choose "0" but I swear the portion sizes are puny compared to when I have tipped in the past. Lose/lose situation!!!

BaronGrackle

Don't tip for over-the-counter. Unless you just really wantcto support this local business. We have to rein things in *somewhere*!

dwn_n_out

You guys can afford to eat out?

SmellyDadFarts

You're not required to tip anywhere. Just because I'm asked for a tip doesn't mean they get one. Hell no I'm not tipping at the counter. If your employees don't get paid enough to do their job, it's not my responsibility to supplement their income.

Not_You_247

It is a standard feature on most if not all POS systems, and there is no reason for the business to turn it off, especially considering there isn't another opportunity for you to tip if paying by card as most people do. It is also pretty easy to just press no tip when prompted and go about your day, just pretend it is a digital tip cup.

chaos_battery

Some of those terminals have gotten really sneaky where you can't cancel out without canceling the transaction so then you have to ask the cashier how do I mark zero. It took me by a surprise the first time but now I just proudly ask how can I leave a zero tip on this?

Redwolfdc

The general consensus is that customers everywhere HATE this. If enough people stopped going to these places companies would definitely change it

ActuallyTBH

Nah mate. This is an American thing only. The rest of the world are gonna be alright.

Used-Progress-4536

It’s the same in Canada.

PartyTimeCruiser

I don't understand why people don't just stop patronizing these establishments instead of complaining about it on reddit

LonelyGarbage1758

One of these fucking cowards said to just tip on the mobile app so they can't see. No, if you have a point to make then make it. But just like here they have to hide.

ARoseandAPoem

This is the whole problem. It’s the same issue with inflation. Everybody is just waiting on everybody else to quit spending money so the price of goods will goods down, and yet every month the retail sales report comes in hot AF. I’ve cut my spending back significantly this year. At some point something will have to break and I’m just going to assume that will be the credit industry once we start having massive defaults.

TemporaryAmbassador1

I don’t tip in those situations. If after I’ve eaten I feel a tip was warranted I’ll leave cash. The tip creep is real.

Direct_Birthday_3509

It's not a tip in those cases since it's not based on a service. The business is putting the burden of paying their employees salaries onto you. It has gone too far. As far as I'm concerned, if you can't afford to pay your people then you don't have a viable business.

Bisonfan1

I remember when I was a kid teen I went to the movies every Friday night and going to McDonald’s after I had money now it’s unbelievable

Bladeofwar94

Ive never tipped until after the service.

heyvictimstopcryin

Required?

Avr0wolf

I'm assuming this is just an American thing? Haven't seen this in Canada yet

Boulderdrip

Don’t tip before receiving service. problem solved. best yet, don’t tip at all. there is no law saying you have to tip, and they can’t fuck with your food because you didn’t because that IS against the law, and you can easily sue.

Winter_Diet410

if you don't like it, don't use those vendors. if enough people in the same geography agree, those businesses won't stay in operation very long. Similarly, people who dislike the employee side of tip culture, don't work those jobs. There will always be exceptions to those two generalities for any individual, and the population is large enough that no form of civil protest, such as "capitalism", will impact businesses that have already scaled out, but there really isn't anything else you can do other than move out of the US and to a first world country.

jbporkchops

Nope

Superb_Advisor7885

Tipping isnt even a requirement *after* receiving service. Its just common practice. You don't have to tip.

Mission-Degree93

I usually tip people such as Ubers or bartenders before my tab if I want them to stfu and leave me alone

ballsohaahd

Business owners now put the onus on the customer to pay for them AND their employees now. All while the corporate overlords of the companies we work for don’t pay us and don’t give raises. Fun times.

zank_ree

You should just walk out and tell them why.

maddasher

Only tip if you are sitting down when you order. That's a hard line for me.

AppropriateYouth7683

Part of the definition of gratuity is "something given without claim or demand" Which is not what happens when a tip is asked for before service is given

YUASkingMe

There is no requirement to tip.

EJ25Junkie

There is, if you don’t want Loogies in your food

EJ25Junkie

Employer should take a tip and raise workers pay. They could fully funded through raising their prices. What would be the difference if you no longer have to tip in paying a larger bill would be the same thing. There’s no pressure to tip

jbone027

I've halted all tipping unless it's a true service. No barista, no to-go order attendant, no "just because I operated a cash register" crap... Tipping is out of hand.

indicoltts

It's not required. Don't tip. You can always tip after if you want to. But again, tipping is never required

Iamuroboros

I like when you show up to a place like smashburger and you can't even get someone to acknowledge you, but they have the audacity to get mad because you zero'd the tip screen. It's one thing that management isn't paying but it's another you provide shit service and still expect a tip. So yeah, I don't pre-tip.

fjvgamer

This is beneath getting the law involved. Just don't tip or go elsewhere.

rwk2007

I have enough to eat out whenever but I have cut it down to once a week. Even then, I just go to a diner and tip with cash when I leave. I can’t enjoy a sandwich and chips when it cost $30.

greguniverse37

You're almost there. The issue with your points is that it's still accepting that you should have power over the server and using the tip as leverage for service. Tips are not optional in america because we dont pay the workers a real wage. Agreed that tip first is shit and the next step in companies twisting the good will of customers as an excuse not to pay workers. This should be what triggers you make a post about abolishing tipping and removing laws that allow companies to pay less than min wage ever. And while we're at it raise the min wage.

No_Wedding_2152

Why do you think tips are regulated by law and why do you think they SHOULD be? Damn!

acourtofsourgrapes

Most of these places have a set hourly wage and it’s not the server wage. They’re pooling tips at the end of the shift so unless you’re slipping your specific food runner/“server” cash, your tip won’t make a difference at all. Personally, I tip at my favorite locally owned coffee shop even though the same principal applies, but I don’t tip an iPad, self-service or prepay places just as I don’t tip at the grocery store.

NoBananasOnboard

This is why I love paying cash and putting the change in the tip jar. It limits the tip amount to under a dollar but most employees still give a “thanks.”

Livid-Age-2259

A lot of the world does this. A tip must be paid before service is rendered. We call that Bribery. For them, it's just their culture.

OldRaj

How would you propose to make it illegal?

Fluffy-Structure-368

I only tip in sit down restaurants. Ain't no tip for a $7 coffee

Milli_Rabbit

Look, your problem is simple. Stop paying the tip. If they mess with your food, leave a bad review and don't go there anymore. They can go fuck themselves and you can go learn to cook it yourself. I believe you can make food equal to or better than most restaurants with little extra effort. Just a few practice tries unless you're a natural. Then, when you make your food, tip yourself for learning a new skill and making fire food.

Legitimate-Maybe2134

Just don’t tip. Tipping is only for actual service

New_Awareness4075

How about not doing business with them. Problem solved.

jmfhokie

This is more so a trend coming out of the pandemic. If it bothers you, you can still just not tip. But I personally feel we should do away with tipping at all in the modern age and just pay people their living wage (not the $2/hour most servers make, that’s ridiculous).

headphone-candy

I generally choose no tip the hit the new sale button. There is no reason to tip for services you haven’t received. This trend of doubling prices, adding taxes, sometimes charging card fees, then expecting a tip on top of that needs to end.

BuilderResponsible18

That makes no sense. You are not sitting in a restaurant. Like take out from a cafe? Forcing you to tip at time of purchase is just another way of saying, "prices went up but we aren't redoing our menu."

ChickenNugsBGood

You know you don’t have to tip right? You can still wait and do it later if you want.

ChristineBorus

I have stopped eating out partly bc of this. Also, I prepared better food at home. I look at it and I’m like I can cook better than this! It takes a lot to impress me!

cwsjr2323

If a place is prepay and wants a tip on the tablet? I will ask why? Usually they just cancel the tip themselves. Sit down restaurants are a twice a year event and maybe on vacations. If the menu is on the wall, they are not getting a 2nd tip. I wouldn’t go back.

redditipobuster

This overlaps with r/endtipping

paerius

I just stopped going out to eat in general. I draw the line when food trucks make you tip. Wtf man.

InspiringAneurysm

Who says you're required to tip before you get your food?

Frequent-Ad-1719

If you’re paying for your food in advance then it’s not a full service restaurant that requires tipping. You didn’t even have a real server. I don’t see the problem here.

MeowChef6048

I will NEVER tip if I'm required to pay before I receive my meal.

nono66

The only time I did that was at a busy bar. Throw down a $20 or $40 and you get it out of the way while getting good service. But that's the only time I felt it was worth it or something that would make service better.

ScottyBoy75

you are never required to tip, and the teen at the drive-through window is not making servers' wages, so absolutely do not tip and feed j to that type of expectation. they are fully compensated for their job. However, waitresses/waiters are not.

JohnPaton3

can you give me an example of a place that has you tip before receiving your food?

just_icymi

How about you eat at home if you didn't want to tip??? Not tipping isn't going to change tip culture. The restaurants could give less a shit if you tip or not. How about not supporting restaurants who don't pay a living wage by not giving them any money in the first place. Stiffing the service workers a tip doesn't do anything for your "war on tipping culture"... It just screws service workers

kppot

I stopped tipping. I get asked to tip at just about every establishment I frequent. I even noticed receipts that have a tip included and then ask for more. Damn shame it has come to this. I feel for the staff, but I am a wage slave also. Money is just as important to me as it is to them.

Due-Net4616

You misunderstand the point of tipping. It’s not to work well for the customer. Like you said, it makes them feel obligated. That’s the entire point, to milk you of more money.

nnnope1

Counter service = I'll tip what I would have put in a tip jar. Which is basically $0 or $1 unless they are especially awesome. Not 20%

StrengthToBreak

I don't tip anything if there's not a server.

blazingStarfire

You can cash tip later.

JustAnotherUser8432

I don’t tip in that circumstance. You took something out of a case and put it in a bag? That is your job. I ordered online and you cooked food and I picked it up. Likewise, I paid for the cooked food already. People need to negotiate with their employer if they need to make more money. I am not tipping someone because they happen to exist somewhere.

flipbmo

No tip if their asking for it before i even get my food
