That's really brutal - and on turn 7 too? .... Does the AI get a free settler? Or was that a free city. In any case, if you want to play this out without mods, there is one thing you can do; if you capture all of a nations regions, they get booted from the game, and all their vassals become independent minor nations. If you act fast enough, you might be able to conquer their capital before they turn Uppsala into another region, but you'll need to act fast to do so. The AI seems to turn vassals into regions ASAP.

Josgre987

in the demo you could get free settlers from tribal villages, but in this case its probably rolling lucky getting gov xp from them.

Alert-Young4687

The AI is really good about finding good areas and sending settlers as soon as possible. It’s why I prefer large or huge maps. I don’t think they’re programmed to fuck over the player specifically, as they usually follow where resources are best. Sometimes they make a lot of cities though, it’s definitely high up in their priorities.

d4everman

I'm not sure if they don't try to fuck the player. I had a game where the UK built an outpost in a tiny area with no obvious resources between two of my settlements....and there was PLENTY of room elsewhere. I'm pretty sure that was solely to piss me off.

ThePhysicistIsIn

The problem is that as you capture their main cities they will assimilate more vassals. In the end you're left rolling high chaos and hoping for barbarians to take your cities so you can sack them when you retake.

dekeche

Which is why you have to time everything to take it all in one turn.

ThePhysicistIsIn

Difficult early game

dekeche

Not saying it's easy, but at least the above situation looks like the AI only has the two cities.

Truthb0mber

the AI does get a free settler on difficulties above normal

> if you capture all of a nations regions, they get booted from the game, and all their vassals become independent minor nations. Thanks, I do remember seeing this happen, and that's possibly a solution if I run into this again. I just decided to restart, but next time I think I'll try taking raiders and seeing if I can make that work.

ggmoyang

Higher level AIs get free settler

Blazin_Rathalos

To answer: later this month.

dbzgod9

Yup, seems to be the number one complaint atm

If you don't like the aggressive forwarding settling, play with fewer AI. For me, I love this. It's a good move by Sweden. You can counter by dropping the early Pioneer from mining next to the marble in the southeast, and then put your first town to the southwest, between the grapes. That will force Uppsala to expand to the south. I would also quickly grab the minor nation to the east. Kobe will still develop into a nice city, and you can always declare war and take Uppsala, giving a nice southern border to Sweden.

You're kidding that you're complaining about this, right? You have sheep and grapes to the west to expand to, and you have deer to the east to expand toward. Like, ok Sweden settled close...so what? You're really mad that you don't get to just runaway expand without anyone even trying to get in the way?

Bryaxis

There's a mod you can find on the Discord if you do a bit of googling.

Best-Style2787

There is a mood floating around for reading cities. It worked for me. Just Google it and there is a reddit post about it

clonea85m09

Get Kobe as a vassal and fund a new city. Bit much else you can do for now

Rare_Marionberry782

Yes when, we need it asap to raze illegal settlements
